An Evening with Incan Abraham
On February 26th, LA-based Incan Abraham performed an incredible set at Baby's All Right in Williamsburg, in anticipation of the release of their new album Tolerance (out April 8th). We got a chance to sit down with Incan Abraham's Giuliano Pizzulo [vocals, synth, guitar] and Spencer Mandel [bass] to talk about inspiration, New Years resolutions, and cheese.

How would you each describe your music in one word?
Giuliano: Warm. Spencer: Cold, Duality.
What’s the story behind the name Incan Abraham?
S: We have a favorite Peruvian chicken place in LA called Pollo A La Brasa, on 8th &Western. In Peru, the national soft drink is Incan Cola. We thought of Abraham Incan and than switched it around. It’s kind of a play on words. G: I’ve grown to love the name. Again has to deal with the duality.
Tolerance drops in April. What are your favorite tracks and why?
S: It is kind of like picking your favorite kid... ‘Tuolumne’. G: ‘All you Want’, but it changes everyday.
What do you think sets this new album apart from your previous releases, like Ancient Vacation?
G: This is our first full length album, but besides the obvious? We tried to focus more on each individual song and make it more of a narrative because it has to go together. We really wanted to write great songs and be as direct as possible. We thought the sequencing was going to be hard, but it was a lot easier and more peaceful than we thought. We did it all in LA, put on the record, and vetted all our options. We wanted to make it into a great journey.
How do you approach each tour and keep it fun during the long drives?
G: We tried to keep it as intense as possible. The other day coming in from Toronto, we didn’t stop. Shout out The Chino Hills Ford! S: Homoeroticism. Currently, we are driving around in an E 350 van. G: Yeah, Spencer is staring to look real good....
What’s the most exciting for you about this tour?
G: Take our music literally and figuratively to different places and experiencing different local cultures. We want to be a good touring band.
What has been your favorite stop so far?
S: Favorites, we have a couple. New York! G: Chicago, Denver. Mississippi Studios (one of my favorite venues) in Portland. S: Portland was great. They let us sleep in the venue and gave us good food.
The band drink?
S: Spiced Cider, it does a lot of things at once.
If you weren’t a musician, what do you think you would be doing?
S: Writer or screenwriter. It's fun to watch characters come alive. G: To work with animals, specifically large cats. Apex predators. Not that I want to own one - I just want them to exist.
Are there any specific shows you saw when you were younger that made you think, “I want to do that”?
G: My father is a musician and he played with Sergio Mendez. He was a mentor to me in my music and in my life. I realized that it could be a lifelong career, when you're 60 and still playing for 30,000 people. S: Blues Traveler in 1998. It was my first concert. Teddy [vocalist and guitarist] and I stood by the stage and I watched the bass player. His name was Bobby, and he definitely inspired me.
If you could choose any artists, whom would you go on your dream tour with?
G: Peter Gabriel would be amazing... and Sting. S: I’ll stand by those. G: Air. They are a big influence on us.
Have you kept up with any New Years Resolutions?
S: Generally just trying to think less, and it's working. G: I didn’t make one, but I’ll make one now. To be the BIGGEST band in the world.
As far as festivals go, you have played CMJ & SXSW—what’s next?
G: The obvious is Coachella. Since we're from LA, and I've been so many times I can’t remember. That would be a highlight. S: Primavera Sound or Leeds. G: Any of the British festivals.
What is your favorite kind of cheese?
G: Oh man, this is so difficult! I’m Italian so I’m biased. Romano, a nice hard cheese... or Pecorino Romano. I’m not into soft cheese. S: The other day at Teddy’s aunt's house, I was blown away by a flake of Parmesan. A really, really good Parmesan is almost psychedelic.  G: Italian cheeses won. S: Italians win the cheese game. G: The French would have something to say about that....

Misterwives Kills it in Williamsburg
Last week, New York natives, Misterwives released their debut EP Reflections with a killer show at Baby's All Right in Williamsburg -
Tumblr media
The EP release show was complete with catchy songs, contagious energy,  flower petals flowing into the crowd from singer Mandy & an encore cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" - and everyone was in fact, having so much fun - one of the minor indicators was the crowds non-stop dancing and singing along with the bands songs.
I had previously only heard one track from the band but that did not hinder how much fun I had dancing along to their songs and persuaded me to immediately download the five-track EP after the show. The EP was just as sick as their performance. Check out my personal favorite track from the EP "Vagabond" HERE and be on the look out for Misterwives in 2014 - I predict some good vibes.
