Knife crime against women and girls has more than doubled in five years and campaigners are warning that not enough is being done to keep them safe.
New figures obtained by The Independent show the number of women who were killed, injured or threatened by a knife soared from 6,000 in 2018 to more than 13,700 in 2022 – laying bare the scale of the crisis. The offences include ones relating to robbery, rape, homicide, public order and theft.
Elianne Andam, 15, is among the victims of knife crime, having been killed on her way to school in Croydon last September. Mehak Sharma, 19, was stabbed to death in the same borough last November having just moved to the UK from India.
Campaigners say the statistics, which cover the last available full year of 2022, show the country needs to tackle the crisis, particularly when it relates to domestic violence, with Labour MP Jess Phillips warning: “Things are getting progressively worse.”
Nick Gazzard, whose 20-year-old daughter Hollie died after being stabbed 14 times by her violent ex-boyfriend in 2014, said: “If this was terrorism, there would be a national outcry.”
The figures for 2022 reveal that:
The number of female knife crime victims surged by 43 per cent in the West Midlands, from 1,010 in 2018 to 1,448 in 2022, according to the UK’s second-largest force
In Essex, the number of victims more than quadrupled in the same time frame – from 435 to 1,879
And Avon and Somerset recorded the number of victims as rising 46 per cent over five years, from 593 to 868
After a Freedom of Information request made by this publication, 26 of the UK’s 43 police forces provided data on knife crime where the victim was either a girl or a woman. The Metropolitan Police, Britain’s largest force, did not respond.
The latest full-year countrywide figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), also for 2022, show that 282 homicides – or four out of 10 – were committed using a knife or sharp instrument. This represented a 19 per cent increase over the previous year.
Police said the way knife crimes are recorded had changed in 2019 but they could not attribute the rise in figures to those changes.
Knives and sharp instruments are the most common weapons used to kill women in this country. ONS data shows that, in the year ending March 2022, one in three female homicide victims was killed by a partner or ex (33 per cent), while more than one in 10 died at the hands of a relative (13 per cent). Some 40 per cent of the deaths occurred in or around the home, compared to 7 per cent in the street or other public spaces.
Ms Phillips has long championed the fight against domestic violence but says the government’s Domestic Abuse Bill does not do enough to protect women. The MP for Birmingham Yardley blames a reduction in youth services and workers, local council cuts, and a lack of police and judicial resources for fuelling the crisis.
The MP, who every year in parliament reads out the names of women killed by men, said: “Things are getting progressively worse, knife crime against women is classic domestic abuse but that’s not ever included in knife crime strategy.
“If only they [the government] cared as much about sexual and domestic abuse as they care about Rwanda.”
The law currently states killers who bring a weapon to the scene face a minimum 25-year sentence, while sentences for those who do not start at 15 years. As domestic killers are more likely to use a weapon lying around the house, like a kitchen knife, they can end up with more lenient jail terms.
Carole Gould has campaigned to close the legal loophole ever since her 17-year-old daughter Ellie was killed by her boyfriend of three months when she ended the relationship.
Thomas Griffiths was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12-and-a-half years in 2019 after he walked into Ellie’s family home, strangled her and then stabbed her 13 times, attempting to frame the attack as a suicide by inserting the knife in the side of her neck.
“She’d only been going out with him for a few months,” her mother said. “The ending of a relationship is the most dangerous time in a woman’s life.”
Campaigner Ngozi Fulani told The Independent that the cost of living crisis may also have had an impact on the rise in crimes against women.
Ms Fulani set up the charity Sistah Space to advocate for Black female victims of domestic abuse in the wake of the deaths of Valerie Forde and her 22-month-old daughter Jahzara. They were both stabbed to death in 2014 by Ms Forde’s ex Roland McKoy, who was jailed for 35 years.
“We have seen a significant rise in reporting to us of knife or sharp instrument attacks,” Ms Fulani said. “We are in a time of economic depression right now and we find perpetrators in unstable economic situations will often become violent.”
Sistah Space has campaigned for Valerie’s Law, legislation that would make specialist training mandatory for all police and other government agencies that support black women and girls affected by domestic abuse.
“We want people to understand one thing – domestic abuse is not a woman’s problem,” she said. “It’s an everybody problem.”
For Deniz Ugur, deputy director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, violence by men against women is part of a cultural problem that needs to be tackled.
“Women and girls face the constant threat of male violence, whether that’s in public spaces, the workplace, online or in our own homes, where the majority of this violence takes place,” he said.
“If we are to change this then it is critical that the government prioritises and invests in quality relationships and sex education based on consent and equality, and public campaigns to shift the attitudes that justify and normalise this violence and abuse. Women and girls deserve better.”
Conservative MP Caroline Nokes has criticised the government for refusing to commit to a new educational strategy for boys which would aim to tackle sexual harassment and gender-based violence.
The chair of the cross-party women’s and equalities committee said: “Education is a powerful and necessary tool in preventing violence against women and girls. Relationships, sex and health education that continues past secondary school and that engages proactively with boys and young men is crucial to combat harmful attitudes.”
A Home Office spokesperson said: “The government is committed to raising the bar in how these vile crimes are dealt with.
“We have gone further than ever before in protecting domestic abuse victims, classifying it as a national threat. Our innovative Young Women and Girls Fund also delivers specialist interventions to vulnerable young women and girls at risk of exploitation or violence.
“We will continue to work closely with the police and courts to bring more criminals to justice, and have set clear expectations for how the police should respond.”

“Pavlo, you won”/ “Pavlo, tu as gagné”           (Description in English)   Golden Dawn (gr: “Χρυσή Αυγή”) is a neo-Nazi party -a former member of the Greek and Europe Parliament- which was founded on the first years of the Greek 3rd Democracy from the neo-fascist branch of the reminiscing collaborators of the Greek Military Dictatorship, 1967-1974. Although throughout the 80s and the 90s Golden Dawn was at the fringe of the Greek political spectrum, it was underground supported by the Greek state, operating under the protection of the security services, acting, at times, as a subserving force to its counter-insurgency operations and conducted attacks against anarchists, leftists, and immigrant workers from the Balkan peninsula. In the late ’00s, Golden Dawn gains leverage from the Greek Debt Crisis and the austerity programs imposed by the EU, ECB, and IMF, appealing to the sentiments of frustration and insecurity of the more «retrogressive» strata’s and exploiting to the maximum the, rather, positive stance of the Greek mainstream media towards them, who depicted them as a “cult” group who were “escorting the grandmother to the ATM’s to withdraw safely their pensions”. As a result, Golden Dawn, (preceded by a “surprising” success in the Athens municipal, during the 2010’s Greek local election’s),  entered in the Greek Parliament in 2012 and made the use of publicity, state’s subventions, and parliamentary immunity, strengthen the ties with the Greek state’s security apparatus, opened offices all over Greece and formed “raid battalions” which conducted numerous violent assault’s against democrats, antifascists, leftists, immigrants, and refugees, during 2010-2013, which lead to the assassination of the Pakistani 27-year-old migrant worker, Sahzat Luqman, in January 2013, in Petralona, Athens and the 34-year-old rap musician and anti-fascist activist, Pavlos Fyssas, in September 2013 at Keratsini, Peiraeus. The public outcry that followed the murder of Pavlos Fyssas and the mass protests that took place, forced the Greek Government to launch a crackdown on Golden Dawn’s leadership, charging them with managing a criminal organization. The trial of the Golden Dawn lasted 7 years. All of that time, the greek antifascist movement mobilize for the conviction of the neo-Nazis of Golden Dawn, with Magda Fyssa, the mother of Pavlos, playing a major role in the process of social de-legitimation of the fascists, due to her dignity, commitment, and combativeness for delivering justice for Pavlos and all the other’s victims of the Golden Dawn’s action. However, in 2019 the prosecutor’s proposal on the trial of the Nazi-criminal organization to acquit the leadership and its cadres of the serious crimes they are accused of reinforced the movements and spurred in dozens of rallies and teach-ins all over Greece, under the campaign “They are not innocent”, which conclude in a mass gathering outside of the court, in 7. 10. 2020 where the verdict for the Golden Dawn was delivered, ruled that the neo-Nazi party is a criminal organization in disguise and the actual and former leadership and the cadre of the party are guilty of managing and belonging to a criminal organization. Celebrating this historical verdict and commemorating Pavlos Fyssas and the major contribution of the Greek antifascist movement for the condemnation, not only in the courts but also at a society level, of the neo-Nazis of the Golden Dawn, we made this street-bomb in a central highway of Athens, declaring “Pavlo, you won”!

Paul was one of my big teenage crushes. He was a brilliant con guest, a great raconteur and a regular destroyer of props. He always had time for fans
Paul loved the character of Avon so much he never stopped playing him, writing about him and campaigning for a new series, he was as much a fan as we were.
Like the lovely Jacqueline Pearce who died last year, his death leaves a huge hole in UK tv fandom.

Press: JAMEELA JAMIL HITS OUT AT CRITICS WHO SAY SLIM WOMEN CAN’T FIGHT BODY SHAMING
New Post has been published on https://jameelajamil.org/2019/01/22/press-jameela-jamil-hits-out-at-critics-who-say-slim-women-cant-fight-body-shaming/
Press: JAMEELA JAMIL HITS OUT AT CRITICS WHO SAY SLIM WOMEN CAN’T FIGHT BODY SHAMING
Jameela Jamil has addressed criticisms that she has no right to speak out about body shaming because she is “slim”.
The Good Place actor posted a lengthy note on Twitter explaining that she is not trying to “be the face” of the body positivity movement, but that she wants to make the most of her platform by giving marginalised groups a voice.
“A note from me to anyone who feels uncomfortable that a slim woman is fighting body shaming as hard as I am,” the 32-year-old’s message begins.
“It’s not only because of my extensive experience with public fat shaming from the press, eating disorders and disability as a teen, but also because I want change for all.”
The London-born presenter runs an Instagram account called @I_weigh, which encourages women to find value in the things that they do and care about as opposed to the way they look.

— Jameela Jamil (@jameelajamil) January 22, 2019
“I just want to make clear what we are doing at @I_weigh,” she continues, “we are building a platform we will use to lift up actual activists from different marginalized groups”.
Jamil acknowledged that she has been afforded privileges due to her high profile job and her looks “being deemed societally ‘acceptable’” but added that this should not detract from her intentions, which are to amplify the voices of important body positive activists.
“This is not me trying to steal your movement,” she added in reference to accusations that she has commandeered body positivity to boost her personal profile.
“It’s me trying to kick the gates open for it.”
She added that this message was particularly addressed to plus-size black women, who “are so left out of this conversation”.
“It’s my bad for not having understood your plight and fought harder with you sooner. It was ignorance, not a lack of care. I stand with you now and forever.”
So far, her message has been well received by fans, garnering more than 8,500 likes on Twitter and thousands of comments from people thanking Jamil for her candour.
“It’s not ever easy to admit when we’ve gone wrong and where we must do better. Love that you can own up to those moments and even more that you actually do the work to grow,” wrote one person. “Thank you for using your platform and privilege to create space for others.”
Another added: “As a ‘fat’ woman, I applaud your efforts and admire you for speaking out and holding various people, publications and organizations accountable. The world could use a lot more people like you.”
Jamil regularly makes headlines for her body positivity advocacy. Most recently, for example, she called for a ban on airbrushing and condemned cosmetics giants Avon for “shaming women” with its latest ad.
The Avon campaign, which the company has since apologised for, featured a smiling woman with the tagline: “Dimples are cute on your face (not on your thighs)”.
Jamil posted the ad on her Twitter page, explaining that dimples on thighs were “completely normal thing” for women and that implying otherwise “literally sets us up for failure”.

Color Cosmetics Market Is Anticipated To Attain Around $86.9 Billion By 2025
The global color cosmetics market size is expected to reach USD 86.9 billion by 2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc., expanding at a CAGR of 6.2% over the forecast period. Growing consciousness about physical appearance, along with rising purchasing power in the developing countries such as India, China, and Brazil, is driving the market for the products.
Furthermore, rapid adoption of the western lifestyle has increased the consumer spending on personal care products. Furthermore, rising women participation in the global workforce has boosted the demand across the world. This women workforce is expected to raise the demand for beauty products in the near future as it represents the main consumer category of the industry.
Facial products dominated the market, accounting for over 25.0% share of the total revenue in 2018. Popular facial products include facial foundation, powder, concealer, and bronzer. Growing penetration of social medial and online makeup tutorials has been propelling the demand of the facial products over the world. Over the past few years, waterproof and sweat proof makeups have gained significant popularity among the women, especially during summer.
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing regional market. Increasing per capita income in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, and Brazil has provided consumers the space to spend more on premium personal care products. Rapid urbanization in these nations has helped in expanding the consumer base of the industry.
