Hudson pulled up to the Safehouse.

Woods stood just under an eave of the building smoking. He dropped his cigarette and stubbed it out with his boot as soon as he saw Hudson walk up. Without a word to Hudson, he walked into the Safehouse.

Of course, he wouldn’t bother holding the door.

This wasn’t new behavior from Woods, and Hudson wasn’t exactly expecting a warm welcome.

Folding up his umbrella, Hudson walked in as well.

The inside of the Safehouse now looked more like what it had once been, an auto repair shop, than the hub of clandestine affairs it was only several months ago.

It felt like much longer. The hunt for Perseus had again grown cold following Bell’s assumed death. And the Safehouse had been packed up shortly afterward.

Mason was just inside pouring himself a cup of coffee. There was an open box on the floor by his feet, used packing paper had been hastily stuffed back into it. So Mason had dug out the coffee maker to make himself a pot. He took his love of coffee to new levels. Hudson considered getting a cup for himself. He had just gotten off a last-minute redeye from D.C. to West Berlin. The coffee on the plane had been good, but there wasn’t enough of it. There was never enough coffee.

However, given the conversation he was about to have, it might be better to wait. A hot drink was more likely to end up on his shirt.

Hudson leaned against a desk. All the furniture had been pushed up against the chain-link fence around the storage room.

Woods shoved his hands in his pockets and glared at Hudson.

It looked like he was itching for the conversation to start.

Woods loved an opportunity to lay into him.

It was funny to think that it had once been suggested that he and Woods work together to reign in Mason.

But they hadn’t gotten off on the right foot.

They were so much younger then.

Hudson should have realized how his formal nature would have come across to a soldier in the middle of a warzone, particularly a Marine.

What did Woods care who he was?

In fact, wouldn’t he, himself, have reacted similarly when he was a soldier?

Still, when it all came down to it, Woods had insured Hudson’s safety then, hadn’t he?

Mason set his coffee down and folded his arms across his chest

“So, are you going to tell us what the hell is going on?”

“Yeah. Why does Bell think that we’re the bad guys here?” Woods jumped in, “And why does she think you’re gonna lock her up?”

“She didn’t tell you anything?”

“She said to wait for Hudson,” Mason said, “Meanwhile, you’ve got her restrained in a hospital bed with armed guards at the door.”

“Some warm welcome,” Woods tapped Mason’s chest with the back of his hand, “She saved us all. If it weren’t for her, this goddamn continent would be a giant hole in the ground.”

Hudson sighed.

Interesting that she left it up to him to tell them.

She didn’t even attempt to spin the story in her favor.

“You both might want to sit down for this.”

“And here is your room key. Is there anything else at all that we can get for you, Mr. Hudson?” The bellhop eyed him warily before adding, “Ice is down the hall if you need it.”

He nodded and handed him a tip. The bellhop thanked him and shut the door behind him.

Hudson removed his jacket. He hung it up in the closet and leaned his umbrella against the wall. The bellhop had placed his suitcase on a luggage rack. He knew it was better to unpack now, hang everything up, and let the creases fall out of his shirts and trousers, but he didn’t feel like it. He’d figure it out later.

Then he went to the bathroom. The fluorescent light took a moment to fire up.

He caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror.

His lip was split, but it had stopped bleeding.

A little swollen, but not the worst he’d ever had.

Hudson sighed and loosened his tie. Walking back into the room, he draped it over the desk chair as he passed.

Opening the curtains, he looked down onto the Berlin streets below. It was still raining.

He grabbed the ice bucket and walked down the hall.

When Hudson got back to his room, he grabbed a white hand towel and tossed the ice in it. He held the compress to his lip.

He placed his shades and watch on the valet tray next to the phone.

Then he dialed room service. It was probably too early for hard liquor, but he ordered the whiskey all the same. He was not ready to deal with the bar downstairs, and his lip might draw some attention.

Fuck it.

He ordered a steak, too, with the hope that they would actually make it rare.

The CIA gave him a very generous per diem, and he, in turn, spent it.

He could be at home having his own barbeque, grilling steaks for himself and Jenny exactly to their preferences.

But no, Adler’s little science experiment had to be resilient.

And come back to bite him in the ass.

He hadn’t wanted any part of this. And he wouldn’t say this to anyone, but he saw first-hand what it had done to Mason.

How he had coped with it.

Or didn’t.

Once we get the info we need- two in the chest, one in the head.

Wasn’t that Weaver’s professional opinion on Mason?

And Mason still had his memories.

It was a fucked up game they were playing.

But when you’re overridden by the President of the United States-

Well, it didn’t matter what Hudson thought then. He was here to do his job and keep the world from getting blown up by some maniac with an itchy trigger finger.

Hudson took off his shoes and sat back in bed. He looked at his watch. It was still too early to call Jenny. She wouldn't be home. He exhaled in frustration. It would have been great to hear her voice right now, especially after that conversation with Mason and Woods. Though he knew he would only be gone a short time, he missed her.

Hudson placed a hand on his forehead and thought over the tough conversations to come.

He’d need to speak with Bell.

Then Black.

From there, the CIA would have to determine what to do with Bell when she was out of the hospital.

Likely lock her up. Throw away the key.

That would also mean another conversation with Mason and Woods then.

There was a knock at the door.

Room service.

The server came in and placed his meal on the small table next to the window. Hudson tipped him.

Once the server left, Hudson took a sip of his whiskey. It burned the cut on his lip only slightly, but damn it, it was still good.

Then he cut into his steak.

Fuck.

Hudson walked up to the nurse’s station. In a moment, Mason was beside him. No Woods this time.

Woods was probably thinking things over.

Mason, Hudson knew, was still seeing red.

Was he really going to stand up for this terrorist?

He knew a lot of people who hated the Soviets, but not many as much as Mason.

All he needed was some common ground with one, he supposed.

“You’re going to go talk with her?”

“Yes. Why are you here?”

“I’ve been waiting, but she won’t see me.”

“Well, at least one of you has some sense. Go back to your hotel.”

A nurse directed him to the room. Mason followed.

Hudson stopped just outside the door and flashed his credentials to the guard.

Not wanting to start a confrontation in the hallway, Hudson allowed Mason to follow him inside. 

Let Bell tell him how she feels.

He realized that this was the first time he would see Bell since March.

After the disastrous Cuba mission, then she had been half-dead, laying on a gurney. Not a whole lot of difference here.

At that time, he thought Adler’s experiment had failed. He thought for sure telling her was the wrong decision.

That she would lead them to their deaths.

But she hadn’t. She came through.

Bell’s bed was upright. She was staring at the rain out the window.

She had bruises on her face and a split lip that mirrored his own.

Bandages on her fingers.

Was her hair shorter?

She turned her head when Hudson walked in. Her eyes flashed over to Mason, and quickly she looked down and away from him.

“Did you tell them?” Her voice was a rasp.

“Yes.”

She nodded, “Mason, please go.”

Mason, stubborn as ever, approached her bed, “Bell-”

“I don’t want to see you.”

He touched her hand.

“I’m not you!” She shouted, looking him in the eye. She struggled in frustration against her arm restraints. Mason stepped back.

“Fine,” He stormed out of the room.

Bell ducked her head back down.

Hudson realized then that it hurt her to look at Mason.

“What is it? You want my account of the last several months?”

Hudson pulled up a chair and set out his tape recorder.

Bell placed her head back on the pillow and sighed heavily.

“What the fuck does it matter? CIA fucked with my head. Perseus fucked with my head. I’m going away for a long time, right? For something I don’t even remember because the CIA fucked with my head. Oh- don’t forget about MI6.”

“Bell-”

��That’s not my fucking name, Hudson!” Bell attempted to throw her hands up but was stopped short by the restraints, “Do you even know my fucking name? Because I sure don’t.”

Hudson ignored her outburst. He didn’t blame her, he understood her anger, but he wasn’t interested in empathizing with a terrorist. Former or otherwise. Besides, he needed information.

“I need to know what happened. What was Perseus doing to you?”

“You took everything from me.”

“I need you to work with me-”

“Or what? What can you possibly do that’s worse than what’s already been done to me? Imprison me? My mind is a prison. Kill me? I wish someone could get that one right-”

“Now that’s bullshit,” He interrupted her tirade.

She looked at him then.

Dead in the eye.

There was no anger there, just surprise.

Good, his candor had caught her off guard.

“Mason and Woods told me how they found you. You were fighting for your life,” He continued.

“Just hard to kill, I guess,” She said quietly.

Wasn’t that the truth.

Hudson found himself walking back down the hospital corridor towards the elevators a half-hour later. It had been a hard conversation. She was abrasive. He imagined he got a taste of what Adler went through when he had attempted interrogation all those months ago. But he had managed to break through to her, somewhat.

She was talking, at least. He’d have to speak with her again, though. A nurse had shooed him out. Give her some rest, she had said. 

He glanced in the waiting room. Mason was drinking the shitty waiting room coffee. He nodded at him, and Mason nodded back. He didn’t understand. Bell was never going to agree to see him. Hudson was sure of that after speaking with her. But he also understood that Mason, after everything he had gone through, would feel like he was turning his back on her if he didn’t try to help. He wasn’t sure how far Mason would take it. 

But, that wasn’t his problem right now. He needed to speak with Black.

Then maybe Woods. Woods could at least come to the hospital to collect Mason.

Hudson sighed and placed the file on the table in front of him. This was not how he had expected things to go. What should have been no more than a few days in West Berlin was now becoming a week.

Rain hit the window of the interrogation room. It had been raining all day. He had to admit it was better than the heat in D.C. in the back of his mind, he wondered how Jenny would feel about it.

He had spoken to her the night before but didn’t mention it.

Moving to West Berlin.

Temporarily.

She was used to it surely, but they were trying to have another kid. Uprooting their lives was the last thing he wanted.

But here now, he was about to drop a bomb on Bell, and he wasn’t certain how she would react to it. His last few talks with her had gone smoothly. With the information he had just received, that might be about to change.

The door opened, and a guard brought her in. He slid the chain of her handcuffs through a hole in the table.

“Bell.”

“Hudson.”

“Thank you for agreeing to speak with me, again.”

She held her hands. Palms up. Showing him the cuffs as if to say she didn’t have much of a choice.

“You’re still refusing to see Mason and Woods.”

Bell sighed heavily, “Are you here to discuss my social calendar? Because if so, I’d rather go back to my cell. There was a crack in the wall I was staring at.”

“Sarcasm isn’t going to help you here.”

“Is it going to hurt? You must need me for something. It’s been nearly a week. You’re still here. I’m still here. I thought I’d be on my way to a detention camp by now.” She looked him in the eye then. “We stopped the nukes. I already told you what happened after that. What else could you need? “You don’t-” Bell looked him in the eye, “You don’t have a file on me, then? At least on me before. Or is that one of those things you can’t tell me?”

Hudson stayed silent.

Bell leaned back in her chair, “Well, I don’t think you’re sticking around here for the beautiful summer weather. So, why are you here?”

“Since you have shown your willingness to cooperate with the CIA, I have a proposal for you,” He paused and, to his relief, she was silent, “Mason and Woods reported on your insistence on ensuring the capture of one Nadya Sokolova. A terrorist who has been on our watch list for some time now.”

Bell was quiet. Her mouth had become a thin line, the color was gone from her face, but he could see in her eyes that she was stunned. He opened the file and placed it in front of her. “We want to work with you,” He continued, “Help you recover your lost memories.”

She scoffed but said nothing.

“We don’t have a lot of information on Perseus. He’s managed to evade detection for decades. So even if you’re able to fill in some gaps, that will better assist us in predicting his movements. He isn’t going to go away at this point. And he must be planning something else.”

He took a breath to see if she would respond. When she stayed silent, he continued.

“There are some caveats. One, we need to ensure that we can retrieve your memories. We can’t move forward without confirmation. I will call on MI6’s assistance with that.”

This got her attention.

“Work with Park again?” Bell looked at him in disbelief, “Are you joking, Hudson?”

“No.  Park is the best of the best. If anyone can determine if we can retrieve your memories, it’s her. Once released from here, you will need to live in CIA-designated housing. It will be guarded 24/7, and you’ll share occupancy with one or more of our officers. You will be escorted everywhere by your assigned officers. During the week, you will return to the Safehouse for sessions to aid with memory recovery.”

“And I imagine refusing or not being able to recover memories will result in imprisonment?”

“Exactly.”

“Well, that’s quite a choice. I’ll think it over.”

“You understand that you won’t be able to stay here. You’ll be a number in a system that’ll be aggressive to you. I won’t be able to control or influence what happens to you if you’re put in detention.”

Bell nodded, “I get it. Will Adler be involved, too?”

“Not directly with you. Is that why you’re hesitating?”

“No,” She looked up at him like she wanted to say something else but stopped herself.

“I don’t know what you’re wrestling with, Bell. But, you should know, someone pulled strings for you. Someone thinks you can change.”

She considered this.

“Mason?”

He did not confirm.

“Do you think I can?”

“I’m not the right person to ask,” He paused, “Why do you care what I think?”

“I thought you might give me an honest answer.”

Hudson turned off the microphones. Bell’s eyes followed his hand as he did it, but she said nothing.

“Why didn’t you try to tell Mason and Woods what happened to you? Try to spin the story in your favor. Why did you wait for me?”

Her mouth was a line again. For a moment he thought she wouldn’t answer. It wasn’t an appropriate or necessary question, but he wanted to know. 

Bell sighed and looked at her hands.

“I didn’t want to see their faces. Their reactions…” She trailed off.

“I see,” He gathered the files, “Well, consider what we talked about.”

Bell nodded.

“I have something for you, ”Hudson reached into his bag and pulled out a book, “From Woods.”

He handed it to Bell.

Bell flipped open the cover of the book. A note fell out.

Hudson stood and began to pack up the files. Bell was studying the note intently.

Scratching his bare chest he searched through the cabinets for the coffee.

“Mason, where the hell did you put the coffee?” He grumbled to no one.

Mason wasn’t there.

Mason was at home.

His own home, where he knew where the coffee was.

“Who doesn’t put the coffee in the cabinet next to the coffee pot?” He grumbled to no one.

Woods opened the fridge. He was grateful Mason had stocked it before he headed back home. He looked at the eggs and bacon, but then realized he’d have to cook. He definitely didn’t feel like cooking. It would probably take an hour just to find everything given the way Mason had the kitchen set up. Woods shut the fridge and instead grabbed some bread, sliced it up, and popped them in the toaster. Then folded his arms and leaned against the counter while he waited for his coffee and toast. Yawning and lifting his arms up he stretched until he heard a very satisfactory crack in his back.

It was then that he noticed the answering machine on the counter. The message light was glowing a steady red.

“Huh,” He said to himself.

Woods pressed play and then pushed away from the counter. He poured himself coffee as the machine clicked on. The tape whirred.

He heard a sigh and then a voice, “Woods.”

Pause.

Not the voice he had been expecting. 

The message continued, “I read that book- well- most of it. And the note. I talked to Hudson and I’m going to at least try. I wanted to let you know,” Another pause, “Thanks. Looks like you’re-”

The machine beeped. The end of the message had been cut off.

I Bought A(nother) Boattail (Part 4)

I’m on my way to the car dealership where the Riviera awaits...the GPS tells me it’s going to be an hour and 5 minutes to my destination.  The USB charging port in the rental works, and I’ve got my phone plugged in even before leaving the rental garage.  I arrive at 3:37pm, I shaved 5 minutes off the estimated time.  My flight home leaves at 7, I need to be at the airport no later than 5:30, I need to leave here by 4:15.  38 minutes to look at the car.  K is there waiting, the car is outside, beautiful, gleaming, gorgeous.  K greets me, and I waste no time getting into looking at the car.  I make small talk with K while I do my (extremely) cursory inspection.  All I really have time to do is visual inspection as it sits.  The car isn’t going up on a rack, I’m not pulling wheels off, I’m not checking compression, timing, engine vacuum, nothing.  I’m going to have time to check for rust. I take a small retrieval magnet and a microfiber cloth and run it along the rockers, lower fenders and quarter panels of the car.  I find ONE spot of filler.  That’s really impressive, only the one spot, and it’s less than 3 square inches in size.  I check all around the back glass, and find no rust or filler.  K points out the broken taillamp lens on the driver’s side, all in all, this car is SOLID.  The engine compartment is as shown in the photos, I make no comment about the color choices involved.  (Why did the engine get painted light Ford Blue, it ought to be Buick Red?!)  K invites me to get behind the wheel, and I do, whipping it out on the road in front of the dealership, I waste no time punching it up to speed and maybe a little over.  K and I keep chatting while I’m cataloging what I notice. The car pulls to the right when driving, and pulls to the left when braking.  “That balances things out, doesn’t it?” K says.  Yeah, ok.  We go back to the dealership and I hand over my deposit.  K runs it through the counter and we walk back out to the car.  There are some cool cars here, I take a few moments to appreciate them.  K is into cars, having done some major events with promotions companies, and shares some of the history of the cars in inventory.  Recalling my trip out, I ask if I can leave my impact wrench in the car, and have it transported back.  Sure, that’s no problem, I put it under the driver’s seat of the Riviera, K walks me back to my rental.  Asking K if there were any good bbq places on the way back, I get a few suggestions, pop those into the GPS and conclude there’s not enough time to detour.  Too bad, I’m hungry.  So far, all I’ve had to eat today is that Coke from the beverage service on the flight out.  I hop in the rental, plug the phone back in (47%), and begin the drive back to the airport.  I’m almost to the rental car return when I realize I need to fill it up.  Detouring for that, I top off the car and find myself at the entrance to the rental car return behind a couple who are reluctant to drive over the folding spikes.  I wait, giving enough room for them to make up their mind (forward or back, people, forward or back!), when they decide prudence is the better part of valor and back out.  I whip the car over the folding spikes to return the rental, and 5 minutes later, I’m on the shuttle to the airport, sans impact wrench, which will follow me back home via enclosed auto transport.  It’s 5:15, I’m on schedule, and after I clear security, I’ll have time to grab a bite to eat before boarding.  I make it to the terminal via the rental shuttle, and by 20 to 6pm, I’m standing in front of another TSA agent, learning that my carry-on was AGAIN going to have to be checked, DESPITE leaving my electric impact wrench in the Riviera.  Seriously?  Seriously?!  C’mon, man.  Why didn’t my departing airport explain these things to me, I could have left the remaining offending ( >7″ are not permitted) tools in the Riviera.  I ask to speak to a supervisor, the supervisor hears me out, then with firmness and compassion escorts me from the screening area to check my bag.  Or surrender my tools. ($200 ratchet, $100 timing light, yeah, no.)  I’m tired, I’m beaten, nothing on the trip has gone right, and at no point would throwing a fit have done any good.  I’m so defeated.  I trudge over to a self-serve check-in kiosk and check my carry-on.  Once I pay the $30, the kiosk asks if I want to check my carry-on luggage for free.  For free?!  For FREE?!  Are you (censored) kidding me?!  I JUST PAID $30 to check my carry on, GIMME MY MONEY BACK!  No, that didn’t happen.  I took the printout from the kiosk, wrapped it around my bag, and handed it to the airline representative at baggage check-in.  Back through security, and I’m really feeling the day’s effects.  No food, frustration after disappointment after debacle after fiasco.  I forget to take my wallet out of my pants when I go through the microwave screener.  They ask if I forgot, I realize belatedly that I had, and with an eye toward where my shoes and belt were, flip it over the plexiglass barrier separating me from my stuff into the bin with my shoes and belt.  The agents didn’t say anything, as the bin hadn’t gone through the X-ray machine yet.  I was so over it.  Finally I clear security. It’s 6:15, the plane departs in 45 minutes, and I still have to walk to the gate.  I arrive at the gate, passing every food place I would have loved to stop at, but couldn’t because the lines at them were all pretty long. I made it in time for boarding.  No time for food, the phone is at 60%, I’m carrying a battery (again) and a charging cable (again).  This time I’m seated at the front of the aircraft, so I get to board early, and there’s even room for my (nonexistent) carry-on.  The rest of the departure goes smoothly, and I’m hopeful that there’ll be food for purchase, as the flight doesn’t include a meal.
