These are the prehistoric flutes found in the caves of Isturitz & Otsozelaia.
They’re made of swan wing bone, and the rounded grey parts seem to be worn away, so they were used for a long time. They’re believed to be around 30,000 years old.
This system of caves was one of the biggest Paleolithic sanctuaries in Europe and were inhabited since at least 80,000 years ago up to the Roman invasion. It’s thought that both Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens shared the caves.
More than 1,200 pieces of portable art (flutes, ornaments, spear heads, slings, etc) were found in Isturitz - more than all the pieces found in the caves of the Bay of Biscay combined - and they belong to their own “kind”: the Isturitz-styled. They’re easily recognized thanks to their realistic style and virtuous execution, as you can see:
A saber-tooth cat
Engraved baguettes
A superb sketch of a chamois head.
