The Sons of Horus cuddlepile prompt. This is a lovefest for the XVI. I love Horus' expansive, charismatic love for his boys, and I love them all having that kind of camaraderie with each other as they follow their genesire's example. Casual affection and lots of battle brothers with benefits, with or without any extra plotty stuff. Combining ships or implying extra/background ships is very welcome.

Content-wise, I would like to see a mission/adventure (maybe with characters protecting or saving each other), or some fun downtime playfulness (with cuddles or flirting?), or some smut (kink welcome, enthusiasm necessary).

Canon divergences where Horus wins and/or where any of these characters survive their canon deaths are great. Various other Sons of Horus surviving to become members of the Black Legion, also great.

I have extra feelings about Horus/Abaddon and Abaddon/Falkus being really devoted in that lord/champion way, and would be happy to see them get romantic through that lens.

For any big group, feel free to focus on a subset with the others in the background; for any pairing, feel free to have them hook up in a situation where group or public sex is happening.

The Rogue Trader ships prompt. Owlcat gave us some very nice romances and I want to mash characters together in completely unrelated ways.

Abel/Pasqal: Pasqal doesn't talk about anything else in the galaxy the way he talks about Abel, and I think it's beautiful. He's so fond and protective and full of wonder at the strangeness of Abel's perspective. I'd love h/c after Abel's rescue, helping to fix his augmetics and/or clear out the remains of the scrap code; I'd love the two of them working together on the mysteries of Amarnat and/or Nomos; I'd love intimacy that involved machine parts interfacing or code combination. I'm very soft for them.

Heinrix/Abelard: I just like their party banter, where Abelard is prickly and needling Heinrix and Heinrix keeps deflecting him. It just makes a good start for some bantery slash? But if you wanted to take it somewhere more serious, Abelard is a tired old soldier who's been through a lot, and if he became convinced Heinrix wasn't a threat to the von Valancius dynasty... Incorporating some of the themes from Heinrix' canon romance, him letting his guard down, being so touch-starved and unused to care, would also be good in that case.

Idira/Theodora: Look. Idira was so destroyed by Theodora's death, and Theodora was the glamorous stranger who showed up to her provincial world and swept her up to see the galaxy. There's all this romantic background, and then it's complicated by power dynamics and the ruthlessness of a Rogue Trader, and the problems that Idira's psyker powers give her, and it's just this potentially really messy ship and I want it to exist.

About the Rogue Trader: I'm really fond of the Crime Lord backstory; I like someone working outside imperial rules. I don't have a really set appearance in mind, though I'm a fan of all the tattoo options. Pick your fave history and appearance!

RT/Uralon: I am so thirsty. Uralon drops the RT to his knees on their first meeting and YES HELLO. I like a heretic RT being actively into this terrifying hot bastard he's had a vision of, and working toward meeting him, and being thrilled to become his champion. Size difference, danger kink, and all my general unhinged howling about themes in my main Word Bearer prompt apply here.

RT/Tocara: When I got to Footfall the first time I wanted to dom the hell out of Vladaym. Then in the chapter 4 sequence, when you can see his bulletproof mesh peeking out of his collar and the old criminal tattoos on his arms, I fell for him a little. I'd love to see a roguish RT striking sparks off him, playing with the power difference, Vladaym refusing to just roll over but aware that he's not the biggest dog here.

RT/Ulfar: Honestly just climb that beefcake mountain pls. The Space Wolves are some of the most connected to human culture and the joys of life out of any Chapter; they should fuck. Something celebratory after a successful battle? Size kink, maybe RT's first time actually getting this close to a Space Marine, scar worship on either side. (Goddamn, that scene on the ship after Eufrates II.) Mutual respect, maybe some banter.

The rareships prompt. I have suggestions for what I'd like to see for these all-too-rare ships, but if you offered one of them with a burning idea what you wanted to make, please go for it. They all need love.

Abaddon/Eidolon: After the Legion Wars, Eidolon winds up somehow allied with Abaddon for later Black Crusades. How? also: Hot? Love to see two powerful, violent men figure out how they can make a deal that they think they get the best of. Also great if they bang in the process.

Bellephus/Narvo Quin/Savona: Their dynamics throughout Manflayer are great, and then they run off together in a sentient gunship to be raiders somewhere. THAT'S SO GOOD? Please show me where they go from there and how much fun they have. Quin has missed out on so much debauchery! Bellephus and Savona can show him.

Cinis/Mortarion: Cinis just fascinates me and I'd love to see more of her with the death god she follows, and the things she learns about the galaxy through his worldview, and the ways she's discovering things she was never meant to. Not looking for penetrative sex here but other kinds of intimacy are good.

Kalkator/Zerberyn: So how about being a Son of Dorn who's sworn himself to an Iron Warriors warsmith? Please tell me what happens after they leave the canon stage! Interested in culture shock, less culture shock than expected, kink exploration/discovery around dom/sub roles, suggestions that other Fists Exemplar are in similar situations. Dubcon ok but I'd like Zerberyn to ultimately be comfortable belonging to his warsmith.

Kar-Gatharr/Torvann Lokk: Friiieeennndsssss. I'd love to see any snapshot of their friendship over the millennia, sfw or nsfw, just capturing their respect for each other. I'd also love a canon divergence where Kar-Gatharr ascends in his last fight and the two of them can reunite as daemon princes.

Horus/Typhon: There's a scene in the prologue of Angels of Caliban where Typhon is swooning over Horus' charisma and mad at himself for swooning (but swooning), 30 years before the Heresy, and it's KIND OF ADORABLE and I just want that to lead to some kind of hero-worship-flavored hookup later on?

Erebus/Typhon: In that same scene from AoC, Erebus shows up to be actually charismatic for once and is hugging-level friends with Typhon. I'm so glad. They should be in cahoots! Let them do spooky Chaos stuff and/or get it on.

Erebus/Horus: Look I just want nice things for Erebus pls, and he clearly spent as much time as possible hanging out with Horus' Expedition before the Heresy. Let him get that dick and love it.

Aximand/Marr: There's a great bit in "The Either" where Aximand offers Marr a spar to make him feel better about his frustrations, and we fade to black and later they both feel better and Aximand has fresh bruises. Now make it sexy. I just love camaraderie and battle brothers with benefits and there's this scene because McNeill loves me.

Kroeger/Lucius: They had that great moment in Angel Exterminatus where Fulgrim and Perturabo BOTH had to call off their dogs in a planning meeting. Please let these fighty dirtbags have a rematch! If it ends in sex that's great, but if they're both too obsessed with literal swords to get into the metaphorical kind, that's great too. Slight preference for Kroeger winning but any outcome is fine if they both get something out of it.

Erebus: The little black dress of my legion tbh. He's supposed to have been charismatic enough to convert a lot of people, make a lot of people take their first steps toward Chaos; can I see some of that, pls? I love his attitude in "Child of Chaos" about fate and the Gods and everything and I'd love to see him celebrated.

Cyrene: I love her role with the WB and would love to see her work as Confessor, how the transition to the True Gods affected her after the previous faith (which she doubted) was cast aside, her closeness with Argel Tal and the Gal Vorbak, sex (and optionally non-stigmatized sex work) with her Astartes... And I'd love the idea of her coming back not as a Perpetual but as Secondborn, lending her strength to her adopted people. Please no carried-off-by-Perpetuals plot or canon timeline after that.

Burias-Drak'shal: Get this murderpuppy a friend (with benefits?) that he can play around and have fun with! I'd love to see him bounce off the Talon of Horus cast. Alternately, I'd love more of the relationship between Burias and Drak'shal; I believe part of why they're so in tune is that Burias acts on feelings and desires almost as much as a Neverborn.

Saqqara: Bitter and wry, captive and disrespected, and flat refusing to accept defeat—he's phenomenally good in his own field, it's just orthogonal to what Fabius et al. esteem. I have so few concrete thoughts; I just want every fanwork celebrating him. Calth, training with Erebus, his time at evil med school, how he deals with daemons, anything.

Sargon: LOOK AT HIM HE'S CUTE AND SPOOKY. I love his silence and his Khayon-confounding mental wards and how much of an enigma he is. I'd love to see him contacting Falkus' warband in the first place, or how he came to Abaddon to start with, or how he gets along with the rest of the Ezekarion—any of those things being shippy is also good.

"Oh, right," more witches Eric had barely spoken to, surrounded by an entire coven but only having reached out to the rare few; Marcella, August, the Pythia. The former two may have been easy to rebuild with but it was clear the Pythia had devised them as another enemy upon the Archfiend's long list. Lupercal became a sort of sanctuary from them, this belief that the once Exile would be protected from any influence the Pythia may have wished to still extend upon their life; she'd already converted them from a volatile. It was a delusion but Eric was always a little delusional; though lycans may be typically free from the clutches of magic, the Pythia had gotten to them and Eric was certain it'd be effortless for them to do so again. "I think I'll always be a little uncomfortable anywhere I end up," a small smile that spoke of the fact that yes, they were indeed happier, safer, not so uncomfortable as they'd once been within the Asphodel house. "What's next for you? Don't these bloodlines have palaces or whatever?"

"I've just seen you. I keep meaning to go see Yurena." In truth she hadn't really felt all that close to any of the Asphodel and that was probably her own fault. She'd been a strange child running wild through swamps on her own, who hadn't really had any friends growing up. It'd made for a socially awkward and kind of angry adult. She'd never really had a group of friends, maybe one or two people she cared about here and there, but even when she and August had killed that damn woman who'd doubted her in her childhood, she'd never really felt a part of anything. Except all the damage the Asphodel had caused. "How's pack life?" Are you safe, are you happy? Questions she can't just outright ask.

Be Nobody’s Valentine

Each year on February 14th countless millions of people celebrate a day known as “St. Valentine’s Day.” Millions of heart-shaped cards and boxes of chocolates are given as gifts, and even churches have Valentine parties on this so-called “Day of Love.” In schools, from pre-school and kindergarten on up, children draw names from a box  and exchange heart-shapes notes which “pair off” the children and is said to be “all in fun.” People of all ages get into the act, and the words that are heard everywhere on that day are, “Be My Valentine.”

The sad fact is that most people never question the origin of the customs that they involve themselves with. Most people do not ask questions but do what everybody else does, never stopping to consider how the Almighty God of Heaven feels about their activities.  When we consider that Valentine’s Day is a day of preoccupation with the heart, it is essential that we listen to the following words spoken by the Almighty, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his wages, and according to the fruit of his doings.” Jeremiah 17:9-10

Christians should be known by their discernment  and should be asking questions regarding Valentine’s Day. What is the origin of this unusual day?  Why is there a preoccupation with the color red? Where did the heart shape come from, and what does it mean? These and other questions will now be answered, as we examine the roots and pagan origin of this popular day.

In the days of the Roman Empire, the month of February was the last and shortest month of the year. February originally had 30 days, but when Julius Caesar named the month of July after himself, he decided to make that month longer and shortened February to 29 days while making July a month of 31 days. Later when Octavius Caesar, also known as Augustus, came to power, he named the month of August after himself, and not be outdone he also subtracted a day from February and gave the month of August 31 days. To this very day it remains that way. The ancient Romans believed that every month had a spirit that gained in strength and reached its peak or apex of power in the middle or ides of the month. This was usually the 15th day, and it was a day when witches and augurs, or soothsayers worked their magic. An augur was a person filled with a spirit of divination, and from the word augur we get the word “inaugurate”, which means to “take omens”.  Since February had been robbed by Caesars and had only 28 days, the ides of February became the 14th day of that month. Since the Ides of a month was celebrated on the preceding eve, the month of February was unique, because it was the 13th day that became the eve of the Ides that month, and it became a very important pagan holiday in the Empire of Rome.

The sacred day of February 14th was called “Lupercalia” or “day of the wolf.” This was a day that was sacred to the sexual frenzy of the goddess Juno. This day also honored the Roman gods, Lupercus and Faunus, as well as the legendary twin brothers, who supposedly founded Rome, Remus and Romulus. These two are said to have been suckled by wolves in a cave on Palatine Hill in Rome. The cave was called Lupercal and was the center of the celebrating on the eve of Lupercalia or February 14th. On this day, Lupercalia, which was later named Valentine’s Day, the Luperci or priests of Lupercus dressed in goatskins for a bloody ceremony. The priests of Lupercus, the wolf god, would sacrifice goats and a dog and then smear themselves with blood. These priests, made red with sacrificial blood, would run around Palatine Hill in a wild frenzy while carving a goatskin thong called a “februa.” Women would sit all around the hill, as the bloody priests would strike them with the goatskin thongs to make them fertile. The young women would then gather in the city and their names were put in boxes. These “love notes” were called “billets.” The men of Rome would draw a billet, and the woman whose name was on it became his sexual lust partner with whom he would fornicate until the next Lupercalia or February 14th.

Thus, February 14th became a day of unbridled sexual lust. The color “red” was sacred to that day because of the blood and the “heart shape”  that is popular to this day. The heart-shape was not a representation of the human heart, which looks nothing like it. This shape represents the human female matrix or opening to the chamber of sacred copulation.

When the Gnostic Catholic Church began to get a foothold in Rome around the 3rd century A.D., they became known as Valentinians. The Catholic  Valentinians retained the sexual license of the festival in what they called “angels in a nuptial chamber”, which was also called the “sacrament of copulation.” This was said to be an reenactment of the marriage of “Sophia and the Redeemer.” As the participants of the February 14th ritual began their sexual sacrament, presided over and watched by the priests known as Valentinians, the following literary was spoken: “Let the seed of light descend into thy bridal chamber, receive the bridegroom… open thine arms to embrace him. Behold, grace has descended upon thee.”

As time went on, the Orthodox Church suppressed the Gnostic Catholics and manufactured “St. Valentine”, whose day continues to be celebrated in these modern times.

It should be without saying that the Christians should avoid Valentine’s Day like a plague.  In God’s eyes, it is still “Lupercalia”, the “Day Of The Wolf.” Men become wolves, as they carry on the Satanic rituals of fornication, which means sexual intercourse without marriage. We have heard of the “wolf whistle”, and we all know that wolves do not whistle. It is lustful men and women, who carry on Satan’s blasphemy to this very day.

In conclusion, we must ask ourselves, “Should a true Christian be associated in any way with this celebration of evil roots? Should we be doing what the heathen have done for so many years  and try to justify it as love?” Romans 12:2 answers this very well, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

Jajouka Rolling Stone

This piece about the Master Musicians of Jajouka, written for Night Flight a few years back, has been MIA on the web, but my friend Steve Krakow’s post on Facebook today has inspired an exhumation. ********** In August 1968, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones spent two days in a remote mountain village in Morocco, recording the ceremonial music of the musical clan who lived there. Three years later, the tapes would become Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka, perhaps the first album of what came to be known as “world music” to enter the pop mainstream.

That entrance literally took centuries, and was spawned by the enthusiasm of a group of hip cognoscenti. The men who would be known as the Master Musicians of Jajouka – the malim, as they were known among their tribe – had probably been performing their music since around 800 A.D. Playing rhaita (indigenous reed instruments), wooden flutes, and handheld drums, they appeared at the pleasure of Morocco’s sultans; in later years, they were supported financially by other natives of their Rif Mountains community.

Though they were Muslims, the malim staged an annual festival, thought to be a vestige of the ancient Romans’ fertility ceremony of Lupercal. There, village boys portraying Bou Jeloud, a part-man/part-goat local divinity, would dance to their music, whipping the woman with branches to ensure that they could bear children.

“Bou Jeloud is Fear and Fucking,” Brion Gysin would write of the ceremony in his 1967 novel The Process. Author, artist, and psychic explorer Gysin was among the first Westerners to hear the music of the malim. He came to Tangier in 1950 at the behest of the American composer and writer Paul Bowles, one of the first notable postwar expatriates in North Africa. (In 1959, Bowles extensively documented Moroccan music for the Library of Congress; those recordings can be heard on a four-CD set issued in early 2016 by Dust-To-Digital Records.)

Gysin and Bowles first encountered the keening, ecstatic music of the malim at a 1951 festival. Via an entrée from Mohamed Hamri -- a Tangier artist and hustler (and lover of both Bowles and Gysin) who was a member of the mountain Attar clan, the village’s prime musical movers -- Gysin later re-encountered the musicians on their hillside home turf.

Gysin in turn introduced the music to another expat, American novelist William S. Burroughs, who settled in Tangier during the ‘50s; in his 1962 novel The Ticket That Exploded – which employed Gysin’s “cut-up” assembly techniques -- Burroughs wrote of “the Pan God of Panic piping blue notes through empty streets.”

Obsessed with the Master Musicians, Gysin established a restaurant, the 1001 Nights, in Tangier in 1954, and imported the players from Jajouka to perform there. Unfortunately, he also hired the erratic Hamri to manage the establishment, and the enterprise ultimately ran aground, with the malim returning to the Djebala foothills to play before their people again.

It is natural that Brian Jones would acquire his own taste for the malim a decade later. Co-founder of the Rolling Stones in 1962, he was the force who injected the most exotic elements into the band’s blues-based sound. He made his first trip to Morocco in 1966; upon his return in March 1967, he met Gysin for the first time, and was famously abandoned in a Tangier hospital by his band mate Keith Richards and his girlfriend, actress Anita Pallenberg, who quickly became lovers.

Nonetheless, Morocco continued to beckon Jones, who could resist neither the ancient, rapturous lure of the country’s music nor the hyper-potent kif (a hashish derivative) that powered its sound. And so in 1968 the rock star returned again, joined by recording engineer George Chkiantz, who brought a battery-powered tape machine.

Mohamed Hamri took Jones and Chkiantz up into the hillside where the Master Musicians resided, and the players recreated the music of the Jeloudia during a day-long session. At one juncture during their stay, a goat was paraded before Jones; gazing at the animal, he exclaimed in awe and fright, “That’s me!” The animal was then led off to slaughter for a communal meal.

Jones envisioned his recordings not as some form of documentation, but as the basis for a rock album. He did not approach the tracks with anything like purity: He slathered the sound with phasing and echo, and edited and cross-faded some selections. But he ultimately did not fulfill his vision of fusion.

Besieged by drug-related legal woes and hobbled by personal problems that made him a professional liability, he was himself led to slaughter: On June 8, 1969, Jones was confronted at home by Richards, Mick Jagger, and Charlie Watts, and fired from the Stones. Less than a month later, he was found dead in his own swimming pool. He was 27.

The Rolling Stones issued Jones’ tapes in 1971, with its location misspelled, as Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka, on their own custom imprint. Not surprisingly, it did not sell well, but it prophesied a deep interest among rock musicians in world music sounds, and it enjoyed a long afterlife in the work of others.

Some with more folkloric interests in Jajouka’s music traveled to Morocco with their own tape machines. In 1972, American Joel Rubiner recorded the malim in their village; one of the selections, “Brian Jones,” was created in homage to the Master Musicians’ late, famous champion. (Rubiner later appeared as a character in Jajouka Rolling Stone, an astonishing fact-based 1993 “novel” by Stephen Davis, author of the Led Zeppelin bio Hammer of the Gods.)

Another pilgrim was musician and journalist Robert Palmer, who had been transfixed by Gysin’s The Process. In January 1973, Palmer brought avant garde saxophonist-composer Ornette Coleman to Jajouka, where the pair recorded for hours with the Master Musicians. A snippet of the work, the track “Midnight Sunrise,” was included on Coleman’s 1977 harmolodic jazz-rock album Dancing in Your Head. Two albums worth of material are said to remain unreleased.

Most ironically, in 1989 Jagger and Richards traveled to Morocco to record with the Master Musicians of Jajouka in Tangier. The sessions, and a joint interview with Jagger and a very unimpressed Paul Bowles, were filmed for a promotional documentary; even 20 years after Jones’ demise, his band mates seemed uneasy talking about him. The Moroccan tracks were used as the basis for “Continental Drift,” a standout track on the Rolling Stones’ 1989 album Steel Wheels, and as a concert fanfare.

For their own part, the Master Musicians of Jajouka endured, despite an internal schism that divided the older and younger players for years. They toured internationally, recorded several commercial releases (under the direction of Bachir Attar, scion of the musical family), and played regularly at Brian Jones memorial concerts in England and elsewhere.

For many years, a framed promotional photo of Brian Jones was prominently displayed on the wall of the musicians’ communal living quarters in the heart of the Rif.

Lammas

Since I am English and Irish on my father’s side, and French Belgian on my mother’s, I feel a strong connection at times to my Celtic forebears, who lived on both sides of the English channel, and were the major culture of Europe before the Romans got involved. This connection is not a matter of skin color (though I am, sadly, the palest of the pale, with skin that burns and freckles instead of tanning, and hair that turned red every summer before it turned gray), but more about a connection to the world that feels to me very pantheistic at heart. I’ve often said, a French Catholic might be at Mass on Sunday and spend Saturday night dancing naked around a rock under the full moon. That is, I feel, my heritage.

So the pagan peoples of Europe not only acknowledged the four major solar events of the year (the two solstices and two equinoxes), but also the mid-points between them. Two of these, beltain and samhain, have become May Day and Halloween in modern culture. To a lesser extent, Candlemas on February 2 still gets some traction, though much of its celebration now bumps toward Valentine’s Day, thanks to the Romans celebrating lupercal on that date. The one that gets lost, it seems, is Lammas (or Lughnasadh) on August 1. This is meant to be a harvest festival, a day to bake celebratory breads, and engage in ritual sporting challenges.

I’m going to keep saying this until it happens: I think Lammas needs to find its secular blow-out equivalent. Think about it: what if on July 31st every year, there were wild parties, and pie-eating contest, and Bake Off contests the next day, with “Extreme Sports” competitions. Don’t we all need some kind of reason to have one last major blow-out before having to face the approaching autumn and inevitable winter? This year, in Chicago, where the winter weather just refused to yield, and it was still snowing in April, and cold in May, it sure feels like the summer was unusually short, and could use some kind of major celebration. Length of day right now is the same as it was May 1, and soon it will be turning cold again. Time for us to find a place for Lammas in our modern world: we could all use another opportunity to party like our pagan forebears did!

August was born earlier on, when Horus was younger and going along on diplomatic missions right around the start of the Great Crusade. No one expected it to happen (the ‘WHY AREN’T YOU STERILE?’ thing that went around here for a bit). The mother was a general perhaps. Aka both parents were younger and celebrating whatever political unification was going on. Really celebrating.

So she got raised in secret, trained and raised by both her mother as well as a member of the Luna Wolves. Then when she is around 18, she reunites with her father and is dragged into the crusade. Horus is delighted to have his kid with him at last, now that she is capable of defending herself and fighting. Doesn’t realize he’s mirroring his crappy dad oops!

It’s all really great and awesome and ‘yay family!’ until it isn’t because this is Warhammer and seemingly nobody is happy :)

1- The birth and the dream

Warhammer OC story. Horus has a daughter, and this is the very start!

Characters: Horus Isleen (mother of August) August (Horus' child) Sedrius (Horus' trusted captain)

Isleen walked down the aisle towards the docking area. It contradicted every tradition she was raised to follow on the planet of Nasgarla. She was supposed to be walked down by her own mother, flowers passed between wrists to whomever she was betrothed.

Instead, she walked between dirty warcraft, starfighters, and powerful cannons. The rhythmic clanking filled the area with the familiar feeling of preparation. After all, their forces had pulled out of the conflict about nine months ago. They could rest.

An inconspicuous ship latched down, the heat from it making the woman’s hair curl back more than the short strands already did. Her chest thumped, eagerly watching the hatch as the small ramp was pushed down. She was met with a familiar face.

The man walked down the ramp, accompanied by one figure clad in white armor. The man himself, although usually depicted and spoken about with his armor in mind, wore only a light tunic and sandals. A fur was carefully draped around his neck and shoulders, the wolf’s head bearing an expression of peace. It contradicted how she had met him, the other pelt screaming. 

“Horus.” She spoke, politely bowing her head. For months, she had prepared how to address him when he inevitably returned. He had happily told her to use his name, yet it still felt strange on her tongue. Like it shouldn’t have happened.

He grinned, embracing Isleen and tilting her chin up. “You remembered.” He whispered, glad to see she hadn’t reset since their time together. “I came as soon as I could,” he quickly resumed, “there’s been talk that we are going further out.”

Isleen nodded, pushing her curly hair back, her eyes momentarily darting away. “I’ve… I had a feeling. Regardless, you are here now, and we’ll get this… situated.”

The warlord followed her, motioning for the Luna Wolf to follow along. They left the docking area, getting away from the hot blasts of air and the smell of fuel. Outside was much more calm. Tranquil as the sea lapped at the sand. It was hard to believe that almost a year ago, these people had sent out half their population to aid in the fight, an offering to the Imperium in good faith as their planet joined.

Tall trees towered over the rocky cliffs, the minerals glimmering in the noon sun. The dichotomy between Nasgarla and Cthonia was immense. Nasgarla hadn’t yet been stripped of the resources. The denizens seemed safe. Horus rubbed his shaved head in thought, knowing it was best this way.

His child deserved a peaceful upbringing. 

They reached the oceanside, Isleen running inside the eroded house. Years of salt had eaten away at the stone pillars, leaving a charming shape to them. The arches had been carefully chipped into over the years, different families carving in different designs. Isleen had left a toothed swirl pattern. Horus traced his fingers down the pillar, wondering what would be etched in next.

The woman came out holding a bundle of white tulle and cotton. A simple wrap for a very special child. The babe slept, only woken up as it was passed to the father’s arms.

“I didn’t think it was possible… meet your daughter.” Isleen spoke, gently making sure Horus had centered the baby properly.

Horus smiled down at her. “She’s beautiful. Takes after her mother, eh?” He looked back down to Isleen, holding the child close to his chest.

“You tease.”

The Warlord snapped back to reality. “Have you named her?” He questioned, his sea-green eyes betraying a sign of familiarity. He ignored the white armor in the corner of his eye.

Isleen shook her head, tracing the baby’s cheek. “No. I wanted to leave that honor to you.” She looked up at Horus, her cheeks a tinge of pink. He still had that aura that never left him. The great confidence of a being made to laugh and spread his word. 

“August.”

Horus had uttered the words so quickly that Isleen had the suspicion he had thought this over, likely mulling the question through his mind every night since he had found out. It had to carry some meaning to him.

Isleen nodded again, a smile cracking on her lips. “A great name. I was hoping the middle could be Samazel. It’s a family name.” She quickly whispered, looking towards the sun as her eyes got that cute purple glint Horus enjoyed.

“Of course. I can’t claim her whole name, can I?” He teased, nudging her gently. He pulled at the fur around his shoulders, starting to wrap his daughter in it. 

Isleen stepped back, letting him have this one moment with her. With the Great Crusade still raging on, he was needed elsewhere. 

Horus spoke, seemingly as if he was giving another speech on a dais instead of the sandy shore. “She’ll learn of Cthonia and her family.” He wrapped the fur around once more. “Under your shield so that she may someday hold a sword.” He paused, looking over at the Astartes that had accompanied him. “Sedrius is one of my trusted captains. He can help train her. Teach her. Raise her.”

The new mother looked towards the captain, who was still wearing his helmet. His right forearm was bandaged up, wires peeking out.

“He needs a vacation from the Crusade.” Horus finished, nodding to his captain. “He’s been my right hand for a bit now. He’s done well and will be able to protect August as well as you.”

Sedruis nodded to his lord, taking off the polished helmet. He bore a serious expression, his brows reminiscent of Horus’, the geneseed having taken a strong grip on him. His jaw had a delicate cut in it, strangely contrasting the man’s demeanor. 

Nevertheless, Isleen took his left hand in hers, not wanting to further damage whatever had been done to his right hand. “Welcome to our family then, Sedrius.”

Horus bent down and kissed his daughter goodbye, handing the bundle over to Isleen. “I’ll be back.” He whispered to the bundle before hugging Isleen at her side, turning away.

The woman watched him go with trepidation as she brought the baby inside, Sedrius in tow. It was a funny thing. She had waited months for the child to come, terrified that something would go wrong. It just wasn’t natural. It wasn’t supposed to happen. None of it. 

Back on that night, Horus had assured her he couldn’t have children–that none of his brothers could–and that they didn’t have to worry. That it’d never happened before. That celebrating this way was alright. 

Obviously, that was a lie, although the borderline fear in Horus’ voice when he had been given the news told her otherwise. Inconceivable. 

Sedrius seemed to snap her out of it. “Isleen?” He asked, gently taking the baby as she started to lose her grip.

“Shit.” She sighed, wiping sweat from her forehead, her hair sticking down. “I’m sorry, you- wait, you’ve never held a baby, have you?” Isleen inquired, her cheeks flushed as the rest of her face paled.

“I have not. Though during my time healing” -he tilted his bandaged hand- “I got to do quite a bit of reading. Rest assured, she’s safe with me.” The marine looked down at the baby in his arms. 

Isleen nodded in relief. “Alright. I… feel sick. I need to lay down.” She steadied herself against one of the pillars before Sedrius took one of her arms, leading her to her bedroom.

He cradled August as Isleen made it to the bed. “If I have any issues, I will come to you. Otherwise, your child is…awkwardly quiet.”

“Hasn’t cried once.” Isleen forced a smile as she rolled over, unable to look at the sight of them. It was unbearable.

Sedrius nodded, exiting the room and going off to sit with the baby in the main room.

Isleen groaned in pain, curled up on her side as she switched between feeling like she was on fire and freezing cold. Creaking filled her mind as she was thrown into a terrible, terrible dream. 

Fires raged upon the planet, strikes from above. Isleen was unable to run in her mind and slowly crawled outside. She looked up to the sky and saw a great ship that was strangely familiar, massive in size. 

She felt eyes staring back down at her from the ship, a haunting gaze. Flashes of orange clouded the atmosphere as she shot awake, panting. A pale light peeked through the curtains of her room, oddly calm and contrasting whatever she had seen. 

It was midnight, and the full moons were out.

FINALLY I’ve got one hammered out. Everything is subject to change because I have too many ideas

August/Anja (still up in the air) Lupercal, daughter of Horus Lupercal. Horus totally got around during some missions, particularly a diplomatic one with a nice woman. Ended up in bed and suddenly he’s a father oh no.

She was raised on her mother’s planet because Horus isn’t sending his kid to Cthonia. (Think Star Wars Anakin & Padme kid going to Naboo instead of Tatooine lol) one of the Luna Wolves (likely a captain Horus trusted) gets sent with to train the kid her entire life.

Once she learns how to defend herself from political enemies (a lot of the Galaxy oopsies Horus) she rejoins the Luna Wolves. Who knows what will happen during the heresy. I’ll flesh her childhood out more and decide on which name first.
