So Where is the Line drawn?
Rated: T
Oneshot/Completed, (unless someone manages to pressure me into a sequel.)
Written by: Me! (Saij)
Summary: Atem is hunted, and Yugi is hunting him. A delicate game of predator and prey. Talking to his prey probably wasn’t his best play. But getting their hands stuck together and caught in a rainstorm definitely wasn’t part of the strategy. What’s this warmth in his chest?
Yugi isn’t sure what game he’s playing with this human anymore.
My submission for the 2023 Secret Santa event hosted by Hikari. A gift fic for @cloudsmachinations in which Yugi is an Ushtey (a monstrous water horse very similar to a Kelpie) and Atem is the unlucky (lucky?) human he’s hunting.

Cont. [x] // @xpharaohsaiboux
He hasn’t realized how quickly his heart is beating, even after they got up. Or maybe that was it— too much excitement and suddenly standing up. The slight and brief dizziness made Atem feel as light as feather but he doesn’t mind. It goes away quickly. His heartbeat’s rhythm gradually is then normalized as soon as the adrenaline rush diminishes. Mahad is looking at him and Yuugi from the small distance. Usually, he’s quick to stand before the pharaoh in a protective stance. But he knows it’s not needed. He knows Yuugi. And he is smiling to see him. And he’s probably just as happy as Atem is. And now if only Mana was here, she would be squealing about their reunion. That’s alright, she is at the palace somewhere, unsuspecting. It would be a big surprise.
Atem holds onto Yuugi’s hand despite not needing to anymore. He wants to feel his presence. It feels all too surreal. This is his partner. He’d thought that the second he passed the gates to the afterlife, that would be it. He would only have the memory of the friends he cherishes so dearly. He’d accepted it. Although, he did have days where he didn’t want to get up from bed, daydreaming of every moment with his friends that was engraved in his head. But he knew that he shouldn’t brood. He is back home, with his former friends. And he shouldn’t neglect that fact.
The pharaoh chuckles as the guards show signs of surprise when Yuugi spoke their language. It is impressive, to say the least.
Tumblr media
“Is that so? I’m impressed.” He displays a smile. Though, he might be a tad upset thinking about the idea of not remembering Yuugi. He is glad that even after he crossed the afterlife he didn’t forget the memories he made in Domino City. And he wouldn’t want to imagine how it would’ve been if Yuugi came here when no one remembered him. He shake his head to rid himself from these thoughts.
“Come, I can show you around the palace. Mana will be really happy to see you.” He turns to glance at the high priest. “And I'm sure Mahad is too.” The time Yuugi pretty much landed on Atem was right when he'd walked down the stairs after he got up from his throne. A few other members of the court are observing the occurrence in the background.

╼ ༺ :||          Town... He was uninterested in her even after seeing the conjuration... Honestly she didn't know for certain and it came with a confused tilt of her head, but there was a good enough idea in any case. For at least in the desert, if one were following the water it would lead to civilization. And she'd been having luck so far with coming across places using the same mode of thought.
If the song were to break, her... puddle pony... would cease to exist. But given the current unknown circumstance, it'd perhaps be better to give some sort of guide and mayhap learn herself where the nearest town was.
Tumblr media
Briefly breaking contact, Daneil hoisted herself up onto the watered back as the elemental snorted with droplets shaken from it's mane. The song wavered not. Could not.
Grasping flowing tendrils as she'd seen her prince do many a times, the girl steered the horse in command- though clearly inexperienced with equine riding of any sort of her own. Still she managed waving a hand that the stranger should follow.
Oh. Whoops. Looks like he spooked her.
"Sorry. Never seen a puddle pony before," he shrugged, subconsciously running his fingers through the ends of Cow's mane.
The horse snorted.
Ton ignored her.
Tumblr media
"Right...While we're talking," he started, eye half-lidded and tone droning. "You wouldn't happen to know the way to the next town, would you?"

Pharaoh Atem naming all the horses in the palace stables and everyone expects the king's noble steeds to have majestic cool names but he keeps calling them cute stuff like "Fava Bean" and Priest Seto is furiously gritting his teeth every time he has to say one out loud

As much as I love the Millennium World Arc it’s also incredibly heartbreaking to watch Atem go through that. He finally has all the pieces needed to open the tablet of memories and they were all sure that he would remember who he was and then he DIDN’T. Instead he goes through a repeat of what he did when he woke up in the Millennium Puzzle where he doesn’t know what’s going on or anything at all but instead of getting to try to piece things together he’s dropped right into the middle of huge dire events. And he does gradually start to get things back but for a huge chunk of it he’s completely in the dark AGAIN. He didn’t actually start remembering things until around where TKB dropped him in the river and his friends gave him his name. And it’s heartbreaking. It’s heart breaking how for the majority of the arc he had to just take people’s word for shit and just blindly trust that they were being honest and that what they were informing him was true. The fact that he spent a year and a half getting used to being with Yugi in his time period and then within two seconds of entering the Millennium World he’s barraged by his past at a million miles an hour, and its not even an everyday kind of day its his friggin -coronation-. So of course he can’t excuse himself. Like thank goodness for royal attendants so he could try and get information from Shimon who was more than willing to explain things to him and didn’t get mad or confused by him not knowing what was going on, he just was like “okay I dunno why the Pharaoh needs an explanation but I’ll explain.” And just look at him.
Tumblr media
Like he’s so overwhelmed and its so sad because yeah he’s finally getting answers about his past but like at the same time he’s not. Just as he was a stranger in Yugi’s body and life now he’s a stranger in his own body and his own life. Unlike the people in his memories he feels out of place and he IS out of place sitting here where everyone knows him and he SHOULD know these people and he DOESN’T.
The scene on the balcony where Yugi can feel his loneliness and Atem is thinking about all of these new but familiar faces he goes, “Everyone here knows who I am. But I don’t know anyone. As a Pharaoh, did I truly understand them? And did they know the real me?” ( Ep 203 11:38) And yet in spite of that he still tried his absolute best to properly navigate being a Pharaoh and he nails it. He steps in himself to deal with Yami Bakura each time, and even though he hasn’t touched a sword in over 3,000 years we see he still knows how to use one just like he still knows how to ride a horse. Any time there is a battle in this arc Atem is front and center being a leader and protecting people or on his way to the battle.
Even though Mahad isn’t there for long (I mean I guess he kind of is because he becomes a card) the scene of him and Atem running into Mana is one of my favorites because that moment Atem realizes that these two were his friends and he did have friends he relaxes and starts flourishing as a pharaoh.

Canon can be read into various ways, and people can and should play with the characters in the ways that appeal to them and make sense to them. So this is just me babbling some.
Part of the appeal of Seto Kaiba's character to me is that he does in his own way desire connection with someone else, and he does love, but he's also not in a mental and emotional place where he's capable of actually being able to connect yet, not in a stable sense. And I've been there -- many people have been there. (I was years-deep in harshly avoiding social connections at age 18 and it would be more years until I was out of that mental space, so I get it. I know others have been there too.) I think Seto does need time to work on himself. But my point here is, I admit it's difficult for me to imagine him having committed close relationships in the immediate aftermath of canon. I think he may be much more distant initially.
In canon, he could be rather demanding about getting attention, and it was good when other characters could put their foot down and tell him to hold his horses like Atem at Battle City. But Seto also didn't demand constant attention by any means -- he was pretty much entirely socially closed-off outside of business and dueling from what we saw, so it could be more about having reassurances at times and being able to approach others when he needs to, until he becomes more comfortable.
I enjoy doujinshi and fanfiction that seem to capture Seto's discomfort and fear of socializing even if he's desiring it, even if he tries to cover up that discomfort and fear with sharp words and avoidance. I guess that's my personal taste.

Two of my favourite headcanons are:
- Atem likes "weird" pets. Scorpions, spiders, stuff like that. Cats and horses are his favourites, but "weird" pets are definitely a close second
- Atem's speech pattern varies depending on what language he speaks. If he's speaking Egyptian, his vocabulary is pretty formal, sometimes even with friends, because that's how he was taught to speak as a child, but if he's speaking Japanese, he sounds waaaaaay more informal than he does in Egyptian. He hasn't noticed he does this, and the only person who might notice is Yami Bakura/the thief king, because he's the only other person who speaks both languages
oooh I like the first one. Atem just having this little obsession with all the weird critters of the world... watching videos about spiders, listening to documentaries about ants... he might try to ask Yuugi if he's allowed to keep something like that at one point, but when he saw how Aibou's face paled he decided that he should probably go for the cat instead XD
The second one's interesting too! I'm assuming the Egyptian here is like, ancient Egyptian (It's called Coptic right? I could be wrong tho alksdj) so he'd definitely have to speak a certain way befitting of his social status. But since he was stuck with a bunch of teenagers in Japan, of course his speech would grow more loose XD TKB can be a fun addition too tho, esp if you include that one other hc where both he and Atem speak different versions of Coptic. TKB like, sort of knows what Atem's saying but the rest goes out of the window 'cause of the differences XD
But thanks for sharing anon! This was good food~

Figure collecting: Pharaoh Atem 1:6 resin by Aftershock Studio
Tumblr media
(Full disclosure, this is an unlicensed statue. There's a similar Atem on horseback statue by Fantastic Territory that is licensed and was announced around the same time, if you like the look of this but don't want to buy unlicensed products.)
Overall this is a pretty piece and was actually quite a bargain given the size and weight (27 lb ship weight). Atem's face is great, exactly what I was hoping for. His earrings are hinged which was a nice surprise, so depending on how you slot in the head they can fall into different spots. Good musculature on the body (nice thighs!)
Tumblr media
The horse looks good. Came as a single piece except for the tail, so no issues with visible seams. Pose is dynamic and it feels stable even though it attaches to the base via the 2 back hooves with a bit of weight resting on a dust wisp that goes between the horse's legs. I mean if I'm going to nitpick it's way too hairy for the desert environment its supposed to be from and I doubt the tack's accurate to any era (certainly isn't tack that would be used in modern riding). Tack is much more minimal than the horse in the licensed statue for sure! But it's still a pretty and powerful looking horse.
Tumblr media
The base is unfortunately quite large with a lot of dust cloud effects, though given how horizontal the entire piece is I think it was unavoidable having a longer base to counterbalance the weight of the horse. There's a mini temple at the back to give the impression that Atem is galloping away from the city or whatnot.
