my girlfriend really wants a game that is "crunchy" about how you build a whole character, ie. having "mechanics" for the fantasy of said characters. an example would be spheres for pathfinder or 5e. we're just looking for other ideas! we both love pbta and we both love 5e, but sometimes you want to chew on the system a little.
THEME: Mechanically Dense Characters
Alright, so let’s see what I can recommend that I haven’t recommended a lot yet. I’m going to try and approach this with a few different genres, as well as a few different systems. There will also be links to related rec posts at the end!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Into the Black, by Monkey’s Paw Games.
INTO THE BLACK is a sci-fi roleplaying game where one or more players take on the role of Management and presents a futuristic universe of corporate oppression and class warfare, while others take on the role of Freelancers and create characters to struggle and survive in that universe. Players must navigate and explore a strange and wondrous galaxy while deeply indebted to an interstellar corporation. Life among the stars, then, is about treading the razor's edge of struggling for survival and finding joy and love where one can.
Into the Black is built on the Into the Odd rules system, created by Chris McDowell. This places it into the OSR family of games. Now, OSR games are typically pretty lethal at low levels, and Into the Black is no different, but I know that 5E has the same kind of problem, to the point that many people will skip first level altogether.
In Into the Black, your character starts with an occupation, a background, randomly rolled abilities, and some gear. Once you advance to your first level, you take one of two classes, and customize from there. Technicians learn new occupations while Specialists take on new Kinesis Abilities, which are paranormal abilities that fit the space setting. You’ll chew through characters pretty quickly here, but I think that finding a character that does survive past the first few levels might be akin to a Nuzlocke run in a Pokemon game - you care a lot about the person who survives past a certain point, and your investment will help you generate this character’s thoughts, feelings and reactions in the game.
Gubat Banwa, by Makapatag.
GUBAT BANWA is a Martial Arts Tactics and War Drama Tabletop RPG where you play as martial artists poised to change the world: Kadungganan: the cavalry, the wandering swordsmen, the tide turners, the knights-errant, the ones to call in darkest night in a world inspired and centering Southeast Asian folklore.
Witness, grand warriors, honorable gallants that trudge and toil under kings and haloes. Witness, KADUNGGANAN, that refulgent name. That blasted name: WITNESS NOW. The end of days is upon us: and the new world MUST BE BORN. Bear your blades, incant your magicks. Cut open your tomorrow from the womb of violence. Inscribe your name upon the very akasha of this world.
There are plenty of mechanics to immerse yourself in when it comes to the Kadungganan of Gubat Banwa. You have a homeland, a social class, defining life events, a profession, a religion, and a specialization. These choices give you pieces of your backstory, but they also give you skills. You’ll also choose a Discipline, a martial art that your character is currently practising, which defines your character’s philosophy and the way they carry themself into battle. Various cultures have collections of different disciplines, with each flavour receiving special abilities, as well as thematic advice on how they present themselves in battle. If you like games that give you extremely cool abilities and badass weaponry, and tie everything in your character to integral pieces of the setting, then Gubat Banwa is for you.
Neon Nights, by EfanGamez.
In Jeriko City, everybody wants to be somebody. Who do you wanna be?
Neon Nights is a cyberpunk/dystopian tabletop RPG set on Earth after a nuclear war devastated the entire planet. After hundreds of years of thousands of people roaming the desolate, irradiated Great Wastes, megacities emerged from the dust of deserts. Where there was once crumbling roads and dancing dust devils now stand skyscrapers towering over hundreds of thousands of roaming pedestrians walking the streets of Jeriko City, located on the East Coast of the once powerful United States of America.
Neon Nights uses a point-buy system to increase parts of your character sheet as you like, which gives you a lot of flexibility when cobbling together a concept. You use points to increase traits, which seem to affect your rolls, perks, which are special abilities used in specific situations, and World Stats, which determine how your character is seen by the rest of the world. How famous are you? How feared? How much respect are you granted? At character creation this may be a guide for the GM as to how your character is received by different elements of society. And these arenas will change depending on what you do in the game. You’ll also choose Occupations which give you pre-determined modifiers and skills that make your character unique. Finally, there’s your gear! Biotech, consumables, and weapons all give your character tools to use in whatever situations you find yourselves in.
Mutants in the Now, by Julian Kay.
In the ‘80s and ‘90s, they ruled the streets, kick-flipping off of villainous faces and slipping into the shadows. Then, they vanished from the world of tabletop gaming.
But they’re back. And ready to KICK BUTT.
Mutants in the Now is a retromodern retake on the mutant animal role-playing games long past and left behind by licensing. Mutants fight to survive, thrive, and make the world better for themselves and humanity.
If you want unlimited options, Mutants in the Now has options. Over 130 animal species and over 200 mutation traits are in the basic book, along with fourteen combat styles, psionic powers, and detailed rules about combat, allies, villains, and more. You can roll randomly for your animal, and spend points to improve them via mutations, combat styles etc.
There’s a lot of pieces that you can look at and then generate a backstory based off of the character you’ve created, and the setting is high action, Saturday-morning-cartoon in theme, but the details are up to your play group. If you like limitless possibilities for character creation, you should check out Mutants in the Now (and it’s expansion, Mutants in the Next!)

Side B, Round 3 (Match 3) *Clash of Casters*
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the left: A Servant originating from the Scandinavian Lostbelt. Manifesting many characteristics of Skadi, the Norse giantess and goddess of the mountains who shares an origin with the Celtic warrior Scáthach. She has no interest in serving as a mentor to heroes and she also has no mastery of any martial arts but if one gets close enough to know her beyond her perfect Queen/Goddess self. One will find out that she's actually pretty ditzy, silly, and warmhearted. She is Scáthach-Skadi
On the right: A Buddhist master who lived during the 7th century Tang Dynasty. In search of the Original Buddhist Scripture, she set out on the Silk Road, traveling from Central Asia to India. At the end, she brought 657 scriptures back to Tang and founded the East Asian Yogācāra sect of Buddhism. Also a major character from the Chinese novel "Journey to the West". Buddha's most specialist girl. A caster also able to perform incredible physical violence. She is Xuanzang Sanzang

isn't helia kinda meant to be respresenting of diversity in the specialists group? in winx you got tecna with short hair or musa with a tomboy style (both discarded in later seasons, too bad), even aisha with her sporty side.
helia to me is like that but on men's version. he's pretty, he likes art and he got luscious long hair, obviously gonna stick out in a school of martial artists that wield weapons and kill monsters.
but he's still a man that kills monsters, like musa wears cute fairy dresses.
he's like that one character that is just different but at the same time the same. in like tecna and musa, in the series they got rid of his artistic side and more quiet personality to the point I even saw him trying to punch riven for imitating a werewolf (but mischaracterization of season 3 onwards aside).
he's obviously showing that men can be pretty much straight and masculine but hace attributes that feel androgynous. you don't need to guess his gender or orientation outside fans' headcanons or little oc universes. helia is the same as his friends with a more refined design that adds more diversity.
he's pretty, got a pretty girlfriend, likes to draw, he's head over heels for his girl, flora is his muse, he loves his grandpa, he can lead missions, he's a skilled fighter, he's levelheaded and he enjoys the quiet.
exactly! like i really do not understand why this is such a big issue for some people. if tecna can be less traditionally feminine without anyone questioning her canon gender, why can't the same be true for helia? and again, absolutely no issue with headcanons (as long as they're respectful and not offensive)! but the rumor that he was supposed to be a girl is just so ?? like who said that. give me their number NOW alhgd
even though most of the specialists now fit into one neat little category, there was still diversity! timmy wasn't as buff, he was more sensitive and emotional, etc. he got buff in the third season, but at least his personality stayed. and just like they made flora latina to add diversity to the winx, i think they made helia Very Noticeably asian to add diversity to the specialists. nabu added racial diversity too but then they killed him so
but anyway yeah, even disregarding race and just focusing on personality and interests, helia was meant to be a better fit for flora which means he's not going to be a super nasty macho man. obviously. her type is sensitive, emotionally cognizant people who don't explode every five minutes (sorry flora/riven likers). and when designing him, they were pretty clearly inspired by shojo anime/manga. and Again, long hair on men isn't a "weird" or Strictly Feminine thing in the winx universe. like i'm saying dude people are weird as shit to Helia Specifically. like this doesn't happen to timmy or tecna. it's Him.

WHY CASS IS IN SPIRIT WORLD
After reading Issue #5 of Spirit World, I foolishly went to the comments section. There I read a comment asking why Cass was included. Short Answer: She's Cool and needs more exposure Long Answer:
The author likes the character is as good a reason as any to place her here, as a fan of Cassandra Cain, I'll take all I can get :D .
But on a less frank/more lore-focused answer, Cass has never been properly engaged in her Mother's Eastern Culture [she was abandoned by Shiva at birth] hence this is a good place to explore that. It can even be said that in her growth as a character, studying or observing Chinatown would be in character. Moreover, she has canonically died for a few seconds hence the author can show her experiencing THIS afterlife briefly and explain what could have happened in those few seconds while tying it to the current plot.
This re-asserts the fact that, in DC, your afterlife is based on your culture; hence, all religions are canon [as shown in the Sandman Comics by Neil]. This, however, raises a strange question. Cassandra has never shown any religious inclinations, probably because it was never introduced to her and because of her difficulty/ lack of language, yet the story presupposes that she still ended up in the afterlife according to Chinese Mythology, WHY? Again, Cass never engaged in any religion in her lifetime so why was she in THIS afterlife? Was this influenced by Shiva being her mom? Was this because Shiva was the one who killed her? She always wanted a sense of normalcy as shown by her befriending Brenda and Zero before the Destructions's Daughter Run was put into motion, did she want to learn about and immerse herself in East Asian/Chinese Culture, thus relegating her to this afterlife? Did the current BBEG yank her soul there so she had no choice [personally, I believe this to be the answer]? This could be explored in the future if the comics are allowed to be extended and the team-up between Xanthe and Cass is kept.
From a more storyteller/ story role perspective, Cass serves as a measuring stick and a foil to Xanthe in terms of martial arts which does not outshine the MC when they are on the same page. We have to remember that Xanthe is still the main character and the comic must mainly revolve around them. Cass does not talk a lot but still bounces off Xanthe quite well when they quip or because of their beliefs. This keeps the attention and interest on Xanthe as Cass can't just magically solve the situation/solve the situation using magic, talk herself out of the situation, or outthink the other characters. She can; however, outfight/outspeed the other members of the cast [Frontline bruiser]. The same goes for Constantine, he's a great support as his skills, in this comic, are focused on magic [Backline Caster]. He is the old gruff veteran of the craft that is juxtaposed against Xanthe's plucky green horn character. They cannot outcast Constantine and it has been shown that John has way more connections and occult knowledge than Xanthe. This highlights what Xanthe can and cannot do. They can fight and cast spells but are outclassed in those fields by specialist characters who are the best at what they do [Flexible Mid-Range Support]. Thus, the comic's combat is more interesting as a result.

Minor OCs of 'Far Past The Ring'
I finally get off my butt and post this!
Here's a little guide to some of the OCs that, while not big players, show up and have minute roles in Far Past the Ring:
Tro Chapelle- The spirited eldest child of the Drummer-Chapelle family. A high school freshmen and future materials scientist, Tro looks to the beautiful in the places she can. Encouraged by her parents, she creates art in all spaces, ranging from polish on nails to paint on armor to even making stuffed animals. Tro also does her best to be inclusive and kind strangers, especially girls her age. With that being said, she has a teen edge to her, especially if she feels undermined or threatened–such as when new members of her baby cousin’s family arrive on Medina Station.
Miriam Martin - the wife of both Timon Chapelle and Dr Tanke Drummer in their polycule, she is a gentle natured Earther who was raised on Ceres by her Christian missionary grandparents. Kicked out of her church due to her sexuality, Miriam immediately joined the Free Navy as a communications specialist, where she met her husband and wife. After they left the service, they settled down on Ceres, where they started their family. After the children got older, Miriam went back to work as a kindergarten teacher, first on Ceres and then on Medina Station. She loves children, having a nice home and is the calming feature in the otherwise wild Drummer-Chapelle family. She is the biological mother of only Tro, but all of the children address her as 'mama' or 'Mimi'.
Blid Chapelle - the oldest son of the Drummer-Chapelle family, Blid is almost 12, obsessed with guns, explosions, and being a soldier. He also loves to tease and make others laugh, though it annoys his sister, irritates his aunt, and upsets his little brother. He is fascinated and excited by both Clone Force 99 and the rest of the clones, especially Crosshair.
Haber ‘Hobbs’ Chapelle - the youngest son of the Drummer-Chapelle family, Haber is 7, quiet, and good natured. He is especially attached to his baby cousin, Meg, as well as his rescued cats, Trash and Garbage. A nurturing and attentive boy, he loves fixing things and wants to be a physician, like his mother and grandfather.
Omega ‘Meg’ Drummer - the beloved baby of the extended Drummer-Chapelle family, Meg is the biological daughter of Clone Force 99 member, Tech, and Dr. Sjael Drummer. A curious 2-and-a-half-year-old, Meg is adventurous and bright, loving to run around her family members, escape through air vents, and be read to. She is especially adored by her cousins Tro and Haber, who get very defensive if anything remotely dangerous gets near her.
CT-9991, Druid - the stoic but kind-hearted leader of Islander squad of the 41st Elite Corps, Druid is a communications and encryption expert, having become fluent in Shrywook, Thykarann, and Xaczik, due to his station on Kashyyyk during the Clone Wars. He was very close to Commander Mayday, who worked with him in some of the rougher terrain on the planet.
CT-9992, Metric - the medic of Islander squad of the 41st Elite Corps. Though trained as a soldier, Metric often served as the de-facto healer while serving in the wilds of Kashyyyk under Druid. He is a jovial, laid-back man who loved working with Wookiees.
Inez Yao - a pretty and charming Martian nurse who works under Dr. Tanke Drummer in Medina Station. A former medic in the MCRN, she is friends with Bobbie Draper, and loves to party and dance.
Dr. Devi Thomas - a microbiologist from the South Asian Trade Zone on Earth who works on Medina Station. She is Sjael Drummer’s friend, and her daughter, Sita Thomas, is best friends with Meg Drummer as well. Devi was widowed in the Bombardment of Earth, where her husband, Neel, was killed in the attack on Taiwan. She has a mild crush on Prax Meng, and is somewhat envious of Sjael's relationship with him.

Look live action will always scare me to the extent that I’ve hit a point where I almost don’t care about rivens potential race anymore but honestly I just wanna know HOW THEY GONNA DO THE ANTI GRAVITY MAGENTA ONION HAIR since the new live action will apparently focuse on more “animation accuracy” I’m curious what is gonna happen with it and how it’ll look😭 tbh I’m kinda manifesting that if they refuse to do like full on magenta hair he’ll at least have like magenta dip dye or smth🤪 tbh I’d the spikey hair doesnt work irl I’d kinda dig a ponytail or manbun to kinda emulate the silhouette of an elevated hair look but that’s probably like just me but I’m excited to see what they will do with his hair😭
On the topic of the ethnicity of the specialists I think one thing I always liked about them is that because they weren’t based off irl celebrities nor do they ever specify races in the magic dimension, I like to think that everyone can have their own hcs Abt them if they’re more ambiguous. Like I guess it might get rlly confusing with helia and Saadin Bcs of helia supposedly taking a more East Asian appearance while Saladin has more southwest inspiration so I guess in terms of genetics it may not rlly seem logical to some? Idk I personally chose to ignore now and there’s rlly not much a point of reading into it as it rlly was a children’s cartoon. And everyone would have their own interpretation of it? Like I guess for me mentally I used to think riven was East Asian like musa when I was rlly young because as an East Asian who grew up in a homogenous country I always remember interracial dating being looked down upon and super unconventional where I was from and I guess I just accidentally projected and assumed since I was a kid. Now that Im older yes I’m a bit more confused but it rlly is super interesting. But I always love listening to others thoughts on characters it’s just very insightful to see how people interpret the animation differently!! I just sometimes like to see people feeling represented in the media they consume tbh
Lol ive never been a fan of live action anything. Its harder for me to suspend my disbelief when I'm looking at some guy doing magic vs a drawing ya know??
Tbh ill be happy enough if his hair is just magenta. Riven with a natural hair color is a evil crime and I will not stand for it. Dye that fuckers hair or so help me god
It would be admittly funny if they use a wig or gel the shit out of his hair, but his hair is probably gonna be just magenta and a normal hair style
Simple solution, Helia is mixed! XD thats the best way to solve all these probems
That's completely understandable, I understand why youd make that assumption, like me and Nabus braids XD
Oh if you wanna hear something about inteprations: both me and my mom thought Aisha was mixed latina and black because her hair texture doesn't have that much volume, especially next to Stormy who's hair looks far more kinky than Aisha's did. Her hair being limp and looking more curly than kinky or coily is definitely at its worst in Harmonix, which is the season I stopped watching at growing up. S6+7 are the best at giving Aisha's hair volume, which is ironic because that's when the couture art style set in, but neither me nor my mom saw that
If your wondering, its mostly the way her hair tapers off, and how it goes mostly down instead of out. It makes her hair look 3 range, which is like my mixed kid hair and less like my mother's
I hope you find that interesting ^^

Love your art!!! You should draw more Asian countries that aren’t East asia, I know it will look bomb in your style 💗🫶🏻 love your art so much❤️
Like I said, I'm not a big specialist in Asian culture, so usually I draw other countries interacting with something I already know... but if you send me an ask to draw someone specific, I will do it!
Thank you for your kind words 🥺🫶

Dominique Darbois
Dominique Darbois (1925-2014) was the daughter of a major specialist of Asian arts and a novelist. She participated in the Free French Forces during the Second World War in 1941. Being a member of the resistance and Jewish, she was arrested and imprisoned at the Drancy camp for two years. In 1944, she continued to fight against the occupiers and received the Resistance Medal. In 1945 France was liberated and Darbois left for Indochina via Shanghai. Although she was only twenty, she had already lived several lives. After the war ended, she came back to France and became the assistant of the French photographer Pierre Jahan, which prompted her career as a photographer.
In 1951, she organized an expedition to Amazonia and Guyana with Francis Mazière and Wladimir Ivanov, from which originated four publications: “Parana le petit Indien” (1952), “Les Indiens d’Amazonie” (1954), “Mission Tumuc-Humac” (1954), “Yanamalé village of the Amazon”. The first publication was translated into eight languages. She then began the collection "Enfants du monde” [Children of the world], a series of twenty volumes containing images and texts by Darbois herself. This collection offered a world tour not from an ethnographic standpoint but rather as a photographer committed to meet children in a world where not everyone was born equal. She surveyed over fifty countries.
If she spent only a few days in Mongolia in 1957, she actually stayed much longer in China during the Hundred Flowers period [during which the Communist Party encouraged its citizens to openly express their opinions of the communist regime]. Thanks to the French photojournalist Henri Cartier-Bresson – who photographed the last days of the political party Kuomintang in 1949 – she obtained a visa only a few people would get at that time. She accompanied an archaeological expedition that led her to photograph the Maijishan Grottoes in Gansu province as well as the Gobi Desert. She captured daily life in both cities and the countryside, while seizing traditions: acrobatics, games of chance, operas, puppets shows… and the new oil refineries around Lanzhou, oil wells around Yumen, political posters, and even the lives of prisoners in labour camps.
In 1960 she published “Les Algériens en guerre” [Algerian at war]. She completed reportage on the maquis and the training camps of the National Liberation Front [the socialist political party in Algeria] in Tunisia. This reportage was forbidden in France. Darbois was interested in the moving world and in ancient civilizations. She published “Kaboul, le passé confisqué. Trésors du musée de Kaboul, 1931-1965” [Kabul, the confiscated past. Treasures of the Kabul Museum, 1931-1965] (2002).
While she could have put aside her cameras, started to manage her archives, once again she committed herself to women in France and in Africa. She published then “Afrique, terre de femmes” [Africa, land of women] (2004) and “Terre d’enfants” [Children's Land] (2004), with a text written by Pierre Amrouche. This was her ultimate work

Winx Club Head canons: Workout Edition.
As you guessed by the title, I am going to give my head canons on what the Winx Club characters I will start with the girls first, and I will put them in order of how they are introduced. The head canons are inspired by my Boyfriend’s @thewickedmerman redesigns, and each girls' personalities and their powers. The inspiration for the head canons also come from The Owl House and the movie Tarzan.
Flora Magical Flowers: Fairy of Nature
I always feel like Flora gets nerfed or knocked out in the first few minutes of a fight. As a nature fairy I feel as though she has the potential to be one of the most powerful fighters. Her workouts would look very similar to Willow Park’s from The Owl House, she would do battle ropes, jump rope, and rope climbing and weightlifting.
Tumblr media
A 20 second clip of Willow’s workouts. Her workouts are actual workouts and I believe you would see a lot of Cross Fit workouts. Most of us think of Flora as dainty, very girly and wouldn’t be very strong. However I love the idea of there being this whole other side to Flora who could punch through a brick wall if she needed too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZEkXDywmRU
Tecna Digital Powers. Fairy of Technology
Because I don’t really see Tecna being hardcore because I picture her being the surveillance for the team similar to what Barbara Gordon does as Oracle and what Wade does in Kim Possible. However, as a Winx Member who has to fight a lot I think her workouts would consist of weight training, slight cardio and I also think she would take a lot of self-defense lessons.
Tumblr media
Musa Rhythm and Tunes: Fairy of Music.
As the Fairy of Music, it only makes sense that Musa is a dancer. She does ballet, hip hop and some tap. She is also great at martial arts. I know it seems stereotypical of me to put the one Asian Character in Martial Arts however a lot of moves in Martial Arts are similar to ballet. She would do a lot of cardio in her workouts and strength training and she would be a skater both ice and roller skating/blading.
Tumblr media
To give you an idea of what her workouts would look like or how they would go here is a clip of Black Belt Ballet Dancer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXtj5d3l4Hk
Stella The Sun & The Moon: Fairy of the Sun and Moon.
Her workouts would consist of Hot Yoga, regular Yoga, Spin Classes, swimming  Pilates, and some cardio. These workouts just seem the most appropriate for Stella. She is one of those people who wants to feel as good as they look. She focuses mainly on weight training because of the fact weight training can help sculpt the body similar to how artists chisel away at a statue.
Tumblr media
Aisha Magic Shapes and Shifting Tides Fairy of Fluids or Waves.
As a Water Fairy and due to her being the most Athletic Aisha’s workouts would consist of swimming, water skiing surfing, skating of all kinds but mainly ice skating. Aisha as shown in the actual show is the most athletic of the girls. With her morphix she could make a lot of makeshift workout gear and this is proven in the show where she made gym equipment out of her Morphix powers. I also believe this is why she is the best fighter in the show. She is a take action kind of gal. I also see her doing a lot of water aerobics.
Tumblr media
Bloom Fairy of the Dragon Flame: And a Fire Burning Deep Inside.
Due to her being from Earth, and the fact she rides a bike, her workouts consist of mountain biking, rock climbing, going for runs and I can even picture her joining a CrossFit gym. I also think Bloom would be into Hot Yoga and regular Yoga
Tumblr media
To conclude these are only head canons but I feel like each workout is fitting to each girl. If you disagree, please be respectful and I would love to hear your guy’s opinions. The pictures I used are taken from this post https://at.tumblr.com/thewickedmerman/winx-club-as-specialists/s4oml0zjwrhi
Ranking them on Least to Most Athletic (Order maybe subject to change)
Tecna
Flora
Stella
Musa
Bloom
Aisha

Ancient Korean Architecture in Context, September 8, 2022
This webinar, inspired by the current exhibition Once Upon a Roof: Vanished Korean Architecture, examines recent research findings on ancient Korean architecture and ceramic roof tiles created more than one thousand years ago during the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla kingdoms. Although no buildings from these periods survive, archaeological surveys reveal the advent of distinct regional styles on the peninsula that contributed to the complex cultural exchanges taking place in East Asia from the fifth through the ninth centuries. The four featured scholars from Korea and the United States will place Korea's earliest wooden architectural traditions in a broader East Asian context. Special emphasis is placed on roof tiles— the subject of the current exhibition—and two speakers will address the original design and fabrication of a special type of ornamented roof tile, called chimi in Korean, that crowned both ends of the main roof ridge of prominent buildings. Using examples excavated at important historical sites, specialists will address their discovery and reconstruction. Speakers include: Lee Byongho, Gongju National University of Education, Gongju Jeong Hyun, National Museum of Korea, Seoul Hwang Hyun Sung, National Museum of Korea, Seoul Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art

helia is obv meant to be androgynous and bishounen but I get why people would think he was designed to be a woman initially because his name is a woman's name actually. helia is a girls name. also, compared to avalon or other long haired characters, he's also somewhat more different.
I don't think it's too far fetched. some language groups like greek fans could have other pov. in latin american spanish his name was changed to helio for this very reason.
i know his name is feminine. that still means nothing tbh
sky is a popular girl's name in the west. does that mean he's automatically a girl? like no of course not. no one is arguing that sky is a woman just because of his name. griffin is a masculine latin name. don't see anyone questioning her. if his name is the Only proof people have that helia was meant to be a girl, that's weak when other characters also have feminine/masculine names that don't align with their canon gender.
also, you need to ask yourself, what is different about helia? like actually answer that question. what exactly makes helia different from characters like palladium, valtor, or avalon. it's not his body - helia has the same muscular body the other specialists have and he's one of the few male characters we see shirtless on screen. it can't be pacifism - he's not a pacifist and pacifism is not a feminine trait. it can't be art or poetry - neither of those things are feminine traits/hobbies. it can't be his fashion - he's just wearing a shirt and jeans. if anything his wardrobe would be considered more masculine compared to the crop tops the other specialists are wearing (even for the time). it can't be his personality - nabu is also wiser and gentler, timmy is also a simp, brandon is also caring.
so what exactly makes helia different from other long haired male characters?
nothing. that's your answer.
the only thing that makes helia So different is that other long haired male characters are often coded as white Or specifically have darker skin, so fans don't feel the need to question their masculinity (which is a Whole other discussion). helia is not coded as white. even fans who don't consciously realize it are still picking up on that coding. these white fans then feel comfortable questioning his masculinity because they've done that to men of color for decades. it's not just asian men either. white people love to question the masculinity of all men of color, regardless of race or skin color. that's how they demean them. how they separate them from white men. they uphold certain racial and gender stereotypes and then demean any man who "doesn't fit that". which in their eyes, is all men of color.
it's like this: man of color doesn't adhere to western/white/european cultural standards > white people realize, don't like, insult them, and try to make them feel like they need to adhere > white men prioritize the patriarchy and feel the need to glorify it > in order to insult men of color, they specifically call out and question their masculinity > white people around the world think this is genuinely innocent because it focuses on gender instead of race > white racists get away with it
listen, i know at first this seems like a really harmless and maybe even amusing topic. "oh helia is so pretty people think he's a girl ahahah". and for some fans it is genuinely harmless. they just think he's too pretty to be a man. and then they realize, laugh it off, and don't question it again.
unfortunately, that's not the case for a lot of other fans. it's not innocent. it's not harmless. it's white people picking up on racial coding and questioning his identity because of it. you guys don't do this to other characters. you don't do it to sky, who also has a "feminine" name. you don't do it to palladium, who is slimmer and has a gentler, nicer personality. you don't do it to saladin. or nabu. or ogron. or gantlos. or anagan. or tritannus. or nereus. or king neptune. or king teredor.
all of those names are male characters with long hair.
i know it's nice to assume that this is innocent and genuine. but unfortunately, that's not the case. this is an example of something that isn't innocent for a majority of adult, white fans. even if they're not doing it On Purpose. subconscious bias is called that for a reason.
#and i do want to clarify that i dont see an issue with kids doing this#like its specifically Adult fans i have an issue with#because they should know better by now#also like has it ever occurred to anyone that helia having a feminine name was them adding to the shojo androgynous vibe#like.#givelian from the comics.. gregory.. holly dark.. king nobody..#literally a dude's name is HOLLY dark and no one is questioning him alkdlga#please im begging you guys give it up#nothing about helia implies that he was meant to be a girl#the name excuse has always been flimsy#also when people say this argument makes no sense because helia is white because his name is greek#like do you guys think musa is an asian name#stop.. just stop.... for two decades fans have discussed this and no one has gotten closer to proving that he was meant to be a girl#and im sorry but when other characters have the exact same attributes that helia has that people Insist must mean he was#it just makes it more obvious when you never talk about them too#like griffin is a masculine name! why not question her femininity?#sky is a popular girl's name! why not question his masculinity?#you never do this to other (white) characters so why do the same qualities mean anything for helia?#also anon to be clear when i say you im using that in a general way i dont mean You specifically#answered#also i know this is long and i want to clarify that im not mad at you or anything#i dont know if any of this sounds mad but#im just soooo tired of this rumor its so dumb aljdghaljg#and when people make an innocent mistake its Fine#but after this long most people doing it are not making an innocent mistake#its on purpose#after this many years.. after so many other long haired male characters.. its not innocent unfortunately#certain (ie white) fans tend to target characters of color like aisha musa nabu etc and helia isnt an exception#even with his racial coding being somewhat ambiguous (at least more than others) people can still tell he's not white#and they treat him accordingly
