(Gary anon) I've witness a lot of fanart that did the same, mostly on Pixiv. I remember some having Blue visit Red on Mt. Silver or tried to get him off it. xD (Oh how much a tone can changed when it goes from Red being a cave recluse in the original, to standing in friggin' snow in regular clothing via remakes) Some characters just have a purpose of being a blockage and that's it. I understand being curious about Tobias' existence and wanting Ash to be redeem, but he was merely
.
(Part 2) conceived just to stop Ash's streak. Now, it isn't the case anymore. (Ash would probably have a easier time now anyways) Gary's sporadic appearances and lack of extensive background sorta helps him cause there's still much more they can add; that's something that can't be said most rivals who gone all out. They can get minor updates for sure, but what do they get antagonizing Ash after the rivalry ended? Or repeating the climatic battle?
(Part 3) I remember Dawn and Zoey not liking his attitude. But yeah, and that tag-team arc, it's a wonder how Paul and Ash weren't disqualified or penalized considering how uncoordinated they were as partners. Paul literally abandoned Chimchar during a battle and Ash had to pick up his reins. (This isn't to say the arc itself wasn't good, it was important Infernape development. It's just that factor in particular that was a head-scratcher) Heh, I've witness Ash slander since about roughly AG.
(Part 4) (Though there was frustrations with how the Indigo League ending went; a little less with Johto) By BW, it got way worse. (I'll admit I was frustrated with his character by that point too [and had a desire to see more gameverse stuff]. {This is someone who saw all 4 League losses when they aired, and got numbed to it by XY}) It mostly consists of fans who have since dropped off watching anime. At least the anipoke crowd provides more constructive arguments,
(Part 5) but even there can a war-zone. (As cool as it is for Dawn to be back again; I'm kinda hoping she's not here for a 3rd promotional arc concerning Arceus or Hisui. Yeah, the anime has to market the games, I get it. But, I rather they focus on other old characters coming back since that's the goal. I feel like next year we'll get a bigger barrage of returns)
Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff! NamelessShippers have been thriving for quite a while and we just keep getting more powerful.
It's wild. Not to mention that he is on the very top of a mountain, which is probably like... one of the coldest places a person could be. Wearing short sleeves. Truly the most powerful in all of Kanto.
Yeah, like, Tobias was sort of a reverse deus ex machina--like, he just sort of showed up with multiple legendaries and very little buildup just because the writers didn't want Ash to win a big league just yet. No need for us to see him again at any point, he served his purpose as a (kind of strange) roadblock over a decade ago.
Absolutely, Gary is such a perfect returning character because despite how long he's been around and how much we know about him, there's still plenty of gaps to fill in.
Yeah! What the heck? The way Paul was handled raises questions.
Ash slander has been a thing for so long and like, so much of it is fundamentally misunderstanding what the anime is about. Like complaining about Ash releasing good Pokemon when he's prioritizing their happiness--which is the kind of thing a good trainer does, treating their Pokemon with love and compassion. And people ignore that Ash has good reasons for leaving most of his team with Professor Oak when he heads for a new region--to have a fresh start, working with the Pokemon he meets in that region.
Honestly, with what little I saw of BW I definitely noticed the flanderization, but my frustration about that lies more with the writers than with him.
Yeah, most people who are actually actively engaged with Pokeani hate on Ash far less--because most of the hate for him does stem from just completely missing the point of what the anime and Pokemon in general is about, who Ash is, and why he operates the way he does. (Though there definitely are issues with this within the fandom, mostly taking different forms.)
Yeah. Hopefully other returns will spend more time on letting us see what these characters are up to and how they're faring in pursuing their passions. We're getting to see Gary thriving as a researcher and he seems possibly the happiest we've seen him, which is very nice after everything he's been put through, but I'd love for other beloved characters (be it beloved by me or others) to have that too.
