Disney Say Ace

Ursula has a plan and wants to get Maleficent in on it. But Maleficent is tired of the sea witch trying to drag her into her schemes. Ursula claims she'll make it worth her while; after all, who doesn't want a good love potion? Really, Maleficent is just too ace for this.

This idea was not what i expected to draw for...well, anything. Originally, the idea came about after a Pokémon game; i was talking to the person i played against about how i also play Lorcana and wanted to at some point build a queer inspired deck. We were looking through bulk cards to get ideas and they pulled out Maleficent, citing that she had some ace vibes. I couldn't get the idea outta my head, so i ran it by one of my friends who imagined a pairing between Maleficent and Ursula with a story like this. I didn't expect Maleficent to come out (no pun intended...this time ���) this well because i don't draw with a lotta angles or sharp features. But she genuinely looks annoyed with Ursula. (Yes i admit, i need to have another go with attempting to draw Ursula. i tried.)

As far as the colors go, Maleficent's skin tone is a combination of grey and green. While to me, the screencap i used as reference had more purple undertones, her official description identifies her skin tone as grey while she has also been depicted as green. So i thought it best to combine the two primary colors and honor both visions. For Ursula, the bottom half of her eye shadow i did change to pink as a nod to the trans flag. But i also added the drag flag behind her as opposed to just using the ace flag. After all, Ursula was inspired by a drag queen; she's inherently drag. Add on the attacks to the queer community, particularly to drag queens, it would have been an insult not to acknowledge where she came from and the part it played into making Ursula Ursula. (Plus, to me at least, there's something funny about pairing the ace and drag flags together. I don't think they're the two people would necessarily expect to go together.)

Today is International Asexual Day. It's only been an officially recognized day for a few years even though we exited long before. Asexuality isn't a label most people would probably think of when they first hear the word "queer". There's not a lot of representation for us so we have to look for nuances in other characters to be able to see this part of ourselves. I can only think of a small handful, if that, of cannon asexual characters with only two of them being Disney. After all, we can't have Disney saying they have an asexual character or they'd have to admit all their other characters experience sexual attraction; even though the movies always end up with the boy and girl kissing at the end but that's ok because it's heterosexual and heteronormative 🙄 If we want more characters to see ourselves in, why not the mistress of evil herself? After all, how many of us aces wish we could turn into a dragon just like her 😇
