15. Talk about the characters' struggles & how you decided on those

swordbearer explores hiyori's canon struggles, so that wasn't a terribly hard thing to pick; i wanted to dig deeper into what might be lurking behind how cartoonishly oblivious she is to zoro's utter lack of interest in her, and i wanted to draw a bunch of lines from that to the very genuine horrors she's lived through under a dictatorship that forces her to Perform nonstop. i also wanted to explore the hashtag asexuality of desperately wanting someone precisely because they'll never so much as look your way, especially through the lens of all the masks, literal and metaphorical, that she is forced to wear for twenty years and subsequently discards in a desperate gamble when she meets zoro. safety in rejection + the sting of rejection + masks shattering for good + you're fine until you're not.
