A/N: Hey loves, I’m sorry for being MIA for a long time. I bled my heart and soul in this fic, and I guess I’m not really ready to end this journey. This fic is an alternative ending to See You in A minute, meaning Stardust didn’t happen. I hope you’ll like it. If you haven’t read the whole installation, I’ll put the links below. xx

It’s quiet hilarious to see a room full of super powered being clamouring to have little Asya on their arms, cooing soft words of love and affirmation to the little miracle that is your daughter but it’s also reassuring. Seeing the Avengers, literally assembled for your daughter’s birth grounds Natasha in a way that she hasn’t felt in a long time since you passed. Seeing her family around your daughter gives her the strength and confidence that she can, indeed, do this because she’s not alone, not really.

Raising Asya as a single mother was overwhelming for Natasha. She wasn’t ready, not really. She thinks its infinitely better if you were there waking up at the middle of the night to a wailing child after putting her down only half an hour ago.

There were so many days where she imagines you in Tony’s place, offering to take over Asya so she can catch more than a few minutes of sleep. There were so many days where she wishes it’s you that’s making your daughter laugh instead of Thor. There were so many nights after she put Asya down to sleep where she breaks down and cries because she misses you.

She misses your light, your warmth, your arms around her, your steadfast belief in her ability to be good and your constant reassurance that she’s enough. She misses your undying support that even though she can do everything she puts her mind into, she doesn’t have to because she has you. You stood by her, you fought alongside her, you loved her, you carried half of her burden and God does she wish to have you back in her arms if only the world’s a wish-granting machine.

But Natasha knew a long time ago that the world is cruel. So she allowed herself to break down at nights but come morning, Natasha resolves to be the best version of herself to be the mother Asya deserves.

Three

Toddlers are a handful, except Asya’s not like any other kid who yells and wails and pulls a tantrum to get what they want. No, Asya is very diplomatic. Ever since she learned her words, Asya has been a very good communicator since.

How she’s talking way too straight for a three years old was beyond all of them. Except for Tony and the pediatrician and child psychologist Bruce brought in, with Natasha’s approval of course, believe that Asya may be speaking straighter than most kids her age because of the stimulus around her. Asya lives with three adults and an eleven-year-old, no one talks to her like she’s a baby. So she doesn’t talk like one either.

At three, Asya and Natasha have developed a very close bond. Even though they live and share common spaces with the Starks, she’s closest to her mother. She loves following Nat around, and Nat doesn’t complain about it. She’s a brilliant, radiant child and Nat loves being with her because Asya, amidst not meeting you, carries on so much of you in her; not just your eyes, and it makes Nat feel like she has her best friend back.

Nat and Asya have established a fairly good routine by now. Every morning, Nat takes her on her morning hike around the property where they sweat and soak up some sun. Asya loves hiking with Nat, where halfway she asked her mother to give her a piggyback ride. Nat doesn’t complain, Asya practically weights anything. Asya also uses this time to ask Nat questions about anything and everything under the sun. Sometimes she makes Nat tell her stories about you and Nat talks her head off until they get back to the house.

After hiking, they would shower and then have some breakfast, mostly with the Starks. Nat's lucky that Asya’s not a picky eater. Breakfast is always a joy, the Starks loves Asya especially Morgan who treats her like a baby sister. Sometimes, Peter would swing by to catch up with Iron Dad, and his adoptive siblings.

After breakfast, everyone breaks off to do their stuff. Nat goes to S.H.I.E.L.D three times a week to help Deputy Director Hill on things. It has been a careful deliberation and discussion with her family before everyone agreed that not being coop up in the house is good for Nat. Tony only agreed after Nat promises that she'll do solely HQ work, no mission of any kind whatsoever.

Nat brings Asya along with her. At first, Nat was hesitant but Asya knows how to behave especially when she’s in public. She stays at her mother’s side or Auntie Maria when Nat has to step away for a minute.

After Asya’s first visit, S.H.I.E.L.D gave her an official ID that allows her to enter the premises. On her second visit, Maria gave her a tailored S.H.I.E.L.D uniform with ‘Romanova-Y/L/N' embroidered on it, which she insisted on wearing every time they go to work. Asya strutting around the HQ in her uniform gave her power over all agents on duty, Director Fury included. Nat rolls her eyes lovingly every time Asya bats her long eyelashes to get everyone to scram and procure whatever she wants.

“She is truly both yours and Y/N's daughter,” Maria commented after sitting next to Nat on the command center and watching Asya interact with the other agents.

“I’m scared that she’s this good at three,” Nat said chuckling.

Maria never asks Nat to stay in the HQ all day, and in the event does she does, Maria always takes them to dinner. Nat and Maria maintained a very professional relationship between them in the past but without you and before Asya, Nat became more reclusive which worried her family. So Maria took a chance at friendship the moment she heard about Asya. Nat was surprised when Maria herself, without Nick, came down with flowers to congratulate her. They’ve become really good friends since then.

If Nat's dismissed from HQ early, Nat always brings Asya to Stardust Diner – your favorite - either before or after they go to a museums, library and/or the aquarium. Asya’s sense of wonder came from you, which only makes Nat fall in love with your little miracle more.

At night, a part of their nightly rituals is either Nat reading one of your books or showing her the scrapbook the team made to Asya. It’s a collection of photos with you that they’re able to unearth on their camera rolls. Most of them are hilarious, especially those photos of you goofing around with the boys. Some of them are downright sweet, like the photo of you and Wanda cuddling one movie night or the photo of you on Thor's back when you sprained your ankle after a recon mission. Looking at the photos always reminds Nat that she’s not grieving alone, the whole team, the whole family lost you too.

Sometimes it’ll be overwhelming for Nat, and Asya - bless her attentiveness and empathy - would close the scrapbook herself and cuddle her mother. On nights like this, Asya always ends up sleeping over in Nat’s room.

“It’s okay mama, I miss mom too,” Asya would murmur half asleep as she lay on Nat’s chest.

Even though it still hurts, Asya’s presence never fails to soothe her aching heart and soul. With Asya secure in her arms, Nat still sleeps with some semblance of peace.

Five

Life will keep moving forward whether you get on it or not but life was put on hold one morning after everyone received Thor’s request for an emergency meeting at HQ. The tension in the room is so thick, one can cut it with a plastic spoon. Tony’s pacing the room, Carol’s bouncing her leg on her seat, even Bucky’s tapping his fingers on the table.

“Relax. I’m sure it’s nothing,” Nat tried to assure the team.

“I don’t know how to relax. The last time we were all in the same room the world was ending,” Tony whispered through gritted teeth. Pepper put a hand on his shoulder and he instantly stopped moving and sighed.

“Maybe I should go check on Thor?” Carol asked as she rises from her chair, unable to sit still any longer. She’s nervous too, Tony’s right the last time they were all gathered together they lost you and Vision.

Just as Carol changed into her Captain Marvel uniform, an alarm sounded in the room; signaling Thor’s spaceship landing in the compound. Their collective hearts hammered as strong as the engines of the spacecraft.

“Finally,” Scott sighed.

It took a couple of more minutes before the engines died down. By the time, its entrance opened the whole team has gathered at its mouth. Director Fury and Deputy Director Hill are standing a little further, watching the whole scene.

“What’s happening Nick?” Maria asked.

Nick just shook his head. “Wait for it,” he said.

Rocket was the first to board off, he is still salty as per usual. Everyone gave him high fives. When he got to Nat and Asya, he smiled. Asya ruffled his head, everyone’s shock Rocket didn’t make a fuss.

“You’re in for a surprise, kid,” he said as he handed Asya a space rock. Asya and Morgan's growing a collection, most of them are from Carol. Asya thanked his furry little uncle before turning her attention to the rock.

Before Nat could say anything, Loki and Thor walked out of ship together. Nat tried to read the Asgardians but they’re not giving themselves away. The moment Thor set foot on dirt, there’s a cacophony of greetings and questions.

“Woah! Woah! Take a breathe people, there is no threat,” Thor said.

“If there’s no threat then why haul everyone here? Even T'Challa left Wakanda for this,” Sam said a little frustrated.

Before Thor can say anything else, everyone turned at the sound of another footstep inside the ship. When the person whose said footsteps belong to emerged, every single one of them lost their breath and their tether to earth and sanity.

YES!!!!! i am a HUGE dragon age fan, dragon age 2 is my favorite! rn i’m playing a lot of rdr2 and i love it so much!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

i wanted to!!! really badly!!!! but my mom would never let me cut or dye my hair, and i didn’t get to wear any of the ~super cool scene/emo clothes~ and i’m a little thankful because no embarrassing scene phase pics but also :(

it’s mostly dark colors, but i think other than black it’s a pretty even split between blue and green right now

aaaaaaaaaa mostly video games, sometimes drawing, i like to go outside or go to the park on kinda cloudy days, when it’s cool and there are no bugs out!

Summary: You just graduated high school and were ready to embark on your last summer of being a dumb teen and going on adventures before having to face the realities of the adult world. One day you were driving to a lake to meet some of your friends when your car broke down in the middle of nowhere. With no service and no gas stations around you wandered a little down the street and found one house where you went to ask for help. You expected to find an old couple living in the middle of nowhere, but a nice young British guy (Tom) answered the door. Due to unforeseen circumstances you spend the rest of the afternoon and most of the night together, but when it’s time to leave he says he wants to see you again. You exchange numbers with the cute British guy and embark on a long, secretive summer fling. You both lie about what you do for a living and what you were both doing in the middle of nowhere, but the moments you too bonded were all genuine. Will he find out about your plans after summer? Will you find out what he actually does for a living? Will this fling extend past summer?

“Do you know what that one is?”

“Tom I told you I just like coming here, I’m not a fish expert.”

He laughed as he opened up his pamphlet again.

“Okay there are about 16 different blue tinted fish in this thing how do I know which one is that little guy?”

“Tom! I didn’t bring you in here to learn all the fish,” you said smiling.

“Okay why are we here?”

“Are you saying you don’t like aquariums?” “I do!”

“Okay come with me,” you said grabbing his hand and pulling him behind you.

Your fingers intertwined naturally. You walked into a room that was almost surface to surface glass, it was like standing right in the middle of the tank full of fish.

“Wow, this is…amazing,” he said approaching one of the glass walls.

“I wish I could sleep in here. It’s so relaxing just being a pair of eyes in here. I’m not quite sure if the fish are aware we’re watching them you know? But regardless of that they go on about their days, doing whatever they do. It’s almost like you’re in-between existing and not existing. You get to see it all, without having to take part in it.”

Your eyes were glued to the fish tank; Tom’s eyes were glued to your face.

“Is that why you brought me here?” he said taking a few steps closer to you.

You turned to look at him and smile, heat rising to your face. You were lost in each others eyes before you cleared your throat.

“Well also who doesn’t love penguins?”

“There are penguins?!”

“Yes c’mon!” you said pulling him behind you again, your fingers interlaced with his once more.

An hour later you two were sitting on a bench outside the aquarium, eating penguin shaped popsicles. Tom was next to you, scrolling through the numerous pictures the both of you had been taking all day. While scrolling you caught a quick glance of one he took of you while you were watching the otters with a huge smile on your face.

“Hey when’d you take that?!” you said trying to take the phone from his hands.

He pulled it into his chest before you could grab it.

“Don’t worry about it!”

“I didn’t approve of that picture though! I hate how I look in it!”

“The whole point of a candid is that it’s taken when you least expect it darling.”

You rolled your eyes and stuck your hand out toward him.

“Just don’t delete it okay?”

“Fine!”

He handed you the phone and you saw the picture. It was actually decent and made you smile, but you hated being in front of the camera.

“Ugh just don’t post it anywhere okay?” you said handing him back his phone.

“That picture is just for me,” he said absentmindedly whilst staring at his phone screen.

You smiled and decided not to ruin the moment.

“Hey at what time is sunset?”

“In like 30 minutes, why?” you said finishing off your popsicle. You’d chosen a blue one and your lips were now tinted blue, Tom’s were tinted red.

“What’s your favorite place to watch the sunset?”

“I have a few.”

“Which is the closest?”

You sat and thought about it for a minute. You smiled and signaled for him to follow you back to the car. A few minutes later you were at a little hidden scenic overlook just off the highway. There was enough space to park your car safely. You grabbed a blanket from your backseat and placed it on the hood of your car.

“Are you kidding? I thought that only happened in American films!” he said looking at you excitedly as you climbed to sit on the hood of your car.

“All real baby. Well at least on a car as old as mine, I don’t think we can dent this only metal by just sitting on it. C’mon,” you said patting the spot next to you.

He climbed up onto the hood of the car, plopping down closer to you than you expected. He looked out at the view, a huge grin on his face. You couldn’t take your eyes off of him.

“Hey can I ask you something?” he said turning to look at you. You turned to face away from him at just the last second so that you wouldn’t seem creepy. You nodded your head.

“You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to but uh, are you running from something or to something?”

You sat and thought about it for a second. You never seemed to ask yourself that question, in your mind for as long as you could remember this was the only plan you had and you were sticking to it. You never doubted or questioned it, ever.

“A bit of both I guess?” you said shrugging.

He nodded and gave you a small smile before turning to face the sunset again.

“Not in the creepy ‘I’m trying to hide something way’ though! I just never really fit in here. I was always on the outside looking in. For people in this area its graduate high school, marry your high school sweetheart, have a few kids, work a 9 to 5 for the rest of your life until your kids are old enough to repeat the cycle. I get it and it makes sense, but I hate it. For as long as I can remember, this place wasn’t the end all be all for me. When I read books as a kid I used to wish a magical dragon would come and whisk me away to an ethereal land, or that one day a letter would be delivered to me by owl so that I could go somewhere that wasn’t here. My dreams were always bigger than this town, and the people here don’t like it. I used to be told I had to be more realistic and that I had to plant my feet on the ground instead of daydreaming. Kids would make fun of me because every other week I wanted to be something else; an astronaut, a Broadway singer, a goddamn princess at Disneyland. People from around here stay here, and I’ve never wanted that for myself you know? I need room to float and fly and have my head in the clouds if I so please.”

The sun was on its last minutes before it dipped beyond the horizon and left you to a starry night sky. The lingering clouds were pink, and the sky was set ablaze with colors like orange and purple.

“You always had wings and the people here tried to snip them,” he said staring at the beautiful sight in front of him.

“Instead of letting them pull them off my back, I just learned how to hide them.”

“Aren’t you ever scared that you’ve had them hidden for so long that once you get the chance to fly, you’ll just fall on your face?”

“Everyday. But I’d rather be the bird who flies and falls, than the bird who died in the cage.”

The sun dipped beyond the horizon, leaving you in the few minutes between sunset and night where the sky was a dark blue and winds started getting cooler.

“It doesn’t count for much considering how long we’ve known each other, but if you fall I’ll be there to help you back up,” he said staring at you.

You stared at his face for a second wanting nothing more than to grab his face and kiss him. You held yourself back, scared by the possibility of rejection. “Thank you. Means a lot more than you’d expect to a girl who’s had to dust herself off alone her whole life.”

You adjusted yourself on the blanket when suddenly his hand was on your cheek, his warm lips pressed up against yours. You could feel the cold breeze, but the warmth radiating from the both of you was enough.

DECEMBER 1998. Provost’s Hall, University of West Yorkshire.

Dr. Matthew Crawley, in his 11th year on the economics faculty at the University of West Yorkshire, had gotten a substantial bonus that Christmas from the school’s president, Dr. Robert Grantham. Dr. Grantham knew that somehow he was holding a brilliant scholar back from fulfilling his potential - he might have been setting public policy for Britain, but for a teaching post in a middling institution in the North, surely. But Matthew was a devoted family man as well as an academic, with a pretty wife, an eight year old boy, and two daughters, one four years old and the other a toddler just out of nappies.

‘You’ve had a busy year, Matt,’ Grantham said, clapping the younger fellow on the shoulder. 'Your book came out, you helped in the search process for Merriman over there. I hope this is enough for a nice, quiet vacation for you, Mary and the kids.’

'This is incredibly generous of you, though, sir,’ Matthew said, still reeling inside at the size of a cheque large enough to pay for a prudently managed two week trip to a resort somewhere.

But the elder knew it would be good for the younger, and spoke almost confidentially now:

'You’d like some time off, though, wouldn’t you, Crawley? Go ahead. Come back refreshed after spring break! Hug the kids, and say hallo to Mary, there’s a good chap. Now off you go home for Christmas. You have just one assignment, to go over holiday brochures.’

'I will, Robert. And thank you so much again!’

NEW YEAR’S DAY, 1998

'Rawr! RAWR!’ George made a little snarl, making a plastic tyrannosaurus rex chase a somewhat battered action figure (only slightly out of scale) around on the living room carpet. 'You’re going to be delicious! Rawwwwrrrr!’

Little Violet Crawley reached for some of the other brightly coloured new toys closest to her brother, knocking down a raptor striped in orange and red and knocking a puce green apatosaurus nearly a foot away, grabbing the grey brachiosaurus by its long neck. George turned his big eyes upon his sister, grabbed the raptor, and glared at her, bringing the trinkets in his hands to face her. He then raised his voice in a louder

'RRRRRAWWWWRRRRRRR!’

Violet began to cry, and little Belle woke up startled from a nap in her dozing mother’s arms. Dad had been watching, looking up every so often from the Financial Times.

'George Matthew Crawley, you apologize to your sister this instant,’ Matthew insisted in the low, stern tone the lad feared more than any animal noise.

'But, Dad, she took my dinosaur!’ came the boy’s petulant complaint.

'I mean it, George. I’d rather not take those away for a week so soon after Christmas Day,’ Matthew replied evenly.

'Oh, all right. I’m sorry, Violet.’

The little girl’s sobbing lessened.

'You pwomise?’

'I promise. You can play with my raptor, too, okay? It’s more fun with two.’

Matthew and Mary, pleased with that exchange, filed it in their memories to be discussed after bedtime came.

LATER THAT NIGHT

Now tuckered out enough to retire themselves about 2 hours after they had put the kids to bed, the handsome professor and his main squeeze got under the covers, and then he turned out the lights. Still definitely enough in love that sleepy kisses drizzled over several moments were their way of saying good night, they let themselves sink into each other’s arms, engulfed in Egyptian cotton and down.

'Matt?’ Mary spoke in a hushed tone.

'Yes, darling?’

'That was very sweet of George to let Violet play with his toys, wasn’t it?’

'It was, at that…’ he smiled, the warmth of his voice suggesting his expression in the darkness.

'Even if he’s been eating, sleeping and breathing dinosaurs ever since that movie came out…’

The one Matthew and Mary had to take their son to because a few of the characters got eaten by those animatronic beasts. They’d liked the approach to the story, though they would have liked more of the moral tale…

'Oh, I can understand raptors, though,’ came the husband’s sweet tone.

'You do, Dr. Crawley?’ his bride of nine years drawled in that appealing, familiar way that never failed to lead him on.

'Yes, indeed… I learned that the word “raptor” comes from the same Latin word as “rapture” does…’

'Yes, darling?’

'… to seize and sweep away. Like a peregrine, like a gyrfalcon, if you prefer.’

'How about like a snuggly creepy-Crawley? I like those kind best…’

'You catch on well…’ Matthew observed. 'Now then… rawwwwwwrrrrrrrr. Rawwwwrrrrrrrrrrr… oh, just raaaaawwwwrrrrrrrr, my darling.’

A honeyed sound, said in happy families like these to mean 'I love you’ in dinosaur. Ah, who is the raptor, and who their prey? It is the eternal question…

THE NEXT MORNING

Now, Matt having - eventually - slept on the wonderful possibilities of taking his family on holiday, he looked over some brochures as he drank his morning coffee at half past six, narrowing his choices down to the places that were the most relaxing, the most beautiful and with the most fun in it for the kids.

'Got the flyers out again, I see,’ Mary uttered as she brought dry toast, butter and marmalade to the kitchen table. 'Anything stand out from the others?’

'Oh, a couple of nice locations,’ Matthew replied. 'I’m thinking Dorset, Devon, maybe Cornwall; on a budget, of course.’

'That’s my Matthew. Oh, remember, by the way, school fees are due for George next week.’

'I have it on the calendar, darling.’

'When’s our holiday on the calendar, then?’

'In the middle of March, after the winter doldrums set in,’ he replied. 'Good time to get away…’

'And George will be on Easter break, and Violet still won’t have started school yet. Good,’ said Mary. 'We just need to make sure there will be enough for the kids to do.’

A FEW WEEKS LATER

Matthew had decided that they would go to the Heritage Coast, and stay in Lyme Regis, where the Easter Bonnet Parade, an aquarium, a museum, fossil hunting and the Cobb made up a list of major attractions. History and literature also played parts in his choice, as he thought it charming to see places associated with famous authors, Lord Admiral Nelson and the little collie, Lassie. The time was nigh to book a place to stay, and he found a small hotel in the northern part of town, the Seashell Inn. Children were welcome and ate breakfast for free. Why not? He rang up this Mr. Henry Talbot, the proprietor, and got an answer after a few rings.

'763904. Seashell Inn, Tony Gillingham here at your service….’

Easy enough to book a suite for a family of five, and Matthew was able to report to Mary as they did the dishes that night that the Crawleys now had a place to stay in Lyme Regis.
