Any books that shows us out right that Mordred could actually be a good, or at least capable ruler?
Hi! I’m gonna suggest medlit as well as retellings for you.
Medieval Literature
The History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth
Modred is present here for only a little while, but he comes in hot. He’s considered “boldest of men” in his audacity against Arthur. He marries Queen Guanhumara [Guinevere]. Modred's army is huge in part because he welcomes Christians & Pagans to his ranks. He's skilled at war & although Arthur overwhelms him tp retreat repeatedly, he's quick to return the attack each time. In the end, he makes a final push to "either conquer or die." So a decidedly brave & savvy Modred if not a successful one.
Vulgate
Mordred has the most depth here of any medieval story simply because this gives him the most page time of all. He's very clever in his wording when he joins Agravain to tell Arthur of Guenevere's infidelity. He says, "We’ve concealed this from you as long as we could; but now the truth must be known, and we must tell it; and by hiding it from you for so long, we’ve been deceitful and disloyal to you. Now we’re doing our duty." Mordred's quick tongue continues to aid him even after all his brothers but Gawain had died. He ends up with Arthur's entire treasury plus an army of soldiers oath-bound to him. After falling in love with Guenevere, Mordred's people encourage her to marry him, saying, "We know of no knight more worthy to rule an empire or a kingdom, for he is a valiant man and a good and courageous knight." It's stated that many nobles "invested" in Mordred & provided him even more wealth as they believed in his cause. He also got Saxony to pay tribute, which Arthur had failed to do.
La Tavola Ritonda | Italian Name Guide
Mordarette [Mordred] is first shown to be really competent as King Artù [Arthur] makes him a viceroy, messenger, & army commander alongside his cousin Ivano [Yvain] in the same way Calvano [Gawain] was in the Vulgate. After that, while Artù & Calvano have run off to battle Lancelotto [Lancelot], Mordarette is left behind as "viceroy & king." He took that to heart & attempts to marry Ginevara [Guinevere]. It's stated that Mordarette's people "Swore to stay by him and never abandon him because of King Mordarette's great joyfulness and courtesy."
Alliterative Morte Arthure
Iconic. This is the prime example I think of when I consider capable ruler Mordred. Arthur has gone all around the world wielding Excalibur to battle & acquire more & more territory. He leaves Mordred behind to essentially rule in his place, even though Mordred begs to come & win himself honor. Arthur leaves & is gone so long that Mordred just… assumed the kingship. He & Guinevere marry, have children, & Guinevere shows Mordred where to find Arthur’s other sword, Clarent. Eventually it comes to blows but Mordred's following is exceedingly loyal as it's been so long that Arthur's return feels like an invasion! Mordred had appointed all new dukes & earls that were loyal to him, & filled out his army with Pagans that Arthur had previously shunned. The ending battle is epic & really showcases what a great fighter Mordred is. He leads his men by example.
Retellings
Mordred: A Tragedy by Henry Newbolt
Mordred play of all time. After Mordred reveals to Agravaine that he’s Arthur’s son, he manages to get all 4 of his elder brothers to support his claim to the throne. He speaks of freedom & truth—he really thinks he’s doing the right thing, & successfully canvasses his case to many. He rides this mindset all the way to the end with an army equal to Arthur’s, they each lose the same number of folks on each side, despite Mordred jumping between them to try & prevent the charge. Incredible piece of literature. Wish I could see it on stage.
Arthur The Bear of Britain by Edward Frankland
The oldest Welsh-inspired retelling I have & likely a huge inspiration for much of what came after. Medraut is just a year younger than his uncle Arthur, not as big or strong as Arthur, Kai, Bedwyr, or Gwalchmai, but he's cunning, & a skilled harper who uses music for political gain. He falls in love with Gwenhyvar & fantasizes about what a better husband he would be to her, & in turn, a better guardian of the land. (This book has by far the most Gwenhyvar of all the Welsh-inspired retellings on the list, so that's a huge bonus.) Medraut has contrasting ideas about how to handle the Saxons & Engels, as he sees they have integrated into society & had children with Britons, so he reckons to fight them is to fight themselves. Arthur disagrees & wants to see them all slaughtered or expelled. This causes a rift that worsens throughout the story & culminates in their split, with Medraut amassing an army efficiently as Arthur can combat him.
The Queen's Knight by Marvin Borowsky
Mordred is a warlord & the major opponent of Arthur as he rises to power. Many fear Mordred because of his military prowess & successful campaigns. He's formidable & clever. Later in the book, after a peace agreement, he basically goes sleeper agent & pretends to be chill for many years biding his time until he can land the final blow against Arthur & be king. Fascinating character & I love the writing style. Content warning for pederasty between Mordred/youth.
The Great Captains by Henry Treece
Medrodus or Medrawt is the "younger brother" of Artorius, the Count of Britain, who doesn't receive the legendary sword Caliburn from Uther. Medrodus is by rights entitled to the role that Artorius has won for himself, but ends up his confidant & a general alongside Cei & Bedwyr. After being initiated into the Celtic way of life, Medrawt, as he's then known by, slowly learns of war from his superiors & wrestles with his conflicted feelings about Artos's position, believing him both capable & incompetent, cruel & kind as a leader. His harbored doubts fester over the years until Medrawt at last makes his move with the skills & allies he accumulated in that time. The "brothers" eventually clash as is expected but nothing can prepare you for the ending. Content warning for incest between Artos/Gwenhwyfar.
The Green Man by Henry Treece
Treece loved Arthurian legend so much, that 10 years after The Great Captains, in the year of his death, he published his final book The Green Man, which tells the whole story over again but differently. Medraut is a son of King Lot of Orkney & nephew of Arthur the Bear. Instead of Roman, he's Pictish. But Medraut's once again subordinate to Arthur, distrusted by Kei & Bedwyr One Hand, & harbors a dislike for Arthur's leadership. I don't know whether I like this one better than The Great Captains, but it shakes things up, as Gwenhwyvar is Medraut's aunt by blood, his mother's sister, so Arthur is his uncle by marriage. This changes the dynamic considerably as the animosity between them stems from seeing Arthur as an outsider, rather than competition as in the first book. Medraut is on his same routine here making allies behind everyone's backs & plotting. He's a pro.
The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart
Mordred is shockingly normal considering the circumstances of his birth. His first impression of Arthur is when he's picking out a new puppy from the litter descended from Cavall. Arthur accepts him as his son immediately, but Mordred is haunted by the prophecy which dictates he'll inevitably be Arthur's "bane." Despite his legitimate respect & even love for his father, things spiral out of control, & Mordred is forced to take up arms against Arthur. Devastating resolution I fear I'll never recover.
The Book of Mordred & The Last Knight of Albion by Peter Hanratty
Mordred is introspective & philosophical. He's not incompetent as a fighter, but certainly of a stronger mind than body. The first book follows him from childhood as his worldview is shaped & corrupted by his treatment from Arthur's inability to handle his own son. The second book follows young Percival in the aftermath of Camlann. Mordred is in it but not as much of a focus, although Percival is determined to track him down & finish what the other knights of the Round Table started. Getting an outside perspective of Mordred is interesting. These books are a great example of unreliable narration.
A Camelot Triptych by Norris J. Lacy
Mordred in the third story in the triptych but all three together really paints an interesting picture of him as a person. He's a tortured soul who believes he meant well & ultimately became the evil thing everyone always believed him to be. The final portion is Mordred raving right before the battle of Camlann where he expresses his feelings regarding Arthur's tyranny & that he intends to martyr himself to save his country from it. Written by the guy who was head editor of the Vulgate so you know it's good.
That's what I got for ya!
There are definitely other examples I could squeeze in here. But these are the books I found most compelling and followed the story through to the conclusion so we get to actually see Mordred as a leader. This list offers a variety of interpretations, some drawing more heavily on on Welsh mythology while others pull lore exclusively from the French Vulgate. Honorable mention to Phyllis Ann Karr's Idylls of the Queen, which doesn't show Mordred as a competent leader, but sets up his motivations in a fascinating way. It's also just a damn good book.
Hope you find some stories among these that resonate with you. Many Mordreds to choose from! I'd love to hear from anyone who reads these and enjoyed them. Take care. :^)

KITCHEN WIZARD HEADCANONS RIGHT THE FUCK NOW!!!
MY BOYYYYY HEHEHEHEH
(Divider by @enchanthings)
Tumblr media
🌟 His name is Arthur Emrys. I do what I want.
🌟 His favorite dish to cook is shark fin soup!!
🌟 Sometimes, the right ingredient just...appears on his countertops! Weird, isn't it?
🌟 if he were to see Orion's "cooking", he would sob openly. He feels it's an affront to nature, Telamon, and cooking itself.
🌟 the math equation is a lot like Chica's bib back in the old fnaf comic days. If you know, you know.(It changes depending on the situation)
🌟 Transmasc icon <3
🌟 He taught CK how to cook!! Made him a tiny apron and everything!
🌟 Sometimes, he swears he can feel a hand on his shoulder, but when he turns, nothing is there. so odd...
🌟 He has a baby dragon. his name is Gabo, as that was his first noise he made when he hatched.
🌟 He's so proud of how Cruel King grew up and who he became as a ruler.
🌟 Kitchen Wizard never really liked when CK's father ruled. The kingdom always felt more dead, fearful almost.
🌟 He comes from a long line of Kitchen Wizards! He's just the best one! Ignore what his family says.
🌟 He accidentally taught CK to swear at a young age. This was not good for him.
🌟 he sounds like Gordon Ramsey. You cannot change my mind.
🌟 he's scared of bugs.
🌟 he's super big on self-care! He spends like. at least an hour washing his hair-
🌟 He doesn't fight often, but when he does, it's almost dance-like. Like he's waltzing.
🌟 Elegance and grace is what he carries himself with.
🌟 He knows how he looks. He knows people find him attractive. He uses this to his advantage if needed.
🌟 Pretty big flirt.
🌟 "come now, darling...don't you want to make me happy? just help me out a little, won't you~?"
🌟 very good in the kissing department. once he starts, unless his partner needs him to stop, he ain't stopping for a while.
🌟 He definitely is big on physical affection.
🌟 HE CAN AND WILL BE MANIPULATIVE IF THE SITUATION CALLS FOR IT.
🌟 Ghost Chef is a whole different story.
🌟 Turns out he WAS feeling something touching his shoulder! It was a ghost in the kitchen trying to help him!
🌟 That awakens something in him and he's immediately all over the ghost(who he soon learns is named Teddy).
🌟 In Telamon's manor, Ghost Chef has Teddy's help now, so the kitchen moves quickly!
🌟 The two share a room now, sleeping together under a pile of blankets and pillows <3
🌟 They don't NEED to sleep, but it's a habit and a way to spend more time together so ykyk
🌟 bitey. so. so bitey. will bite.
🌟 he's very patient with little kids.
Those are all I have atm!! :D

"The most babealicious version of Arthur there has ever been. He’s got the wizard, he’s got the hot lady love, he’s got the magic sword and the kingdom to reunite. Hate to see him charge the gates or Mordor but love to watch him walk away"
Martin the Warrior
"A wandering warrior who makes his fame conquering tyrannical despots with his iconic meteor-iron sword. His Guinevere didn’t cheat but she died and left him grief stricken. After he retires he founds a monastery which is the central location of the book series and his spirit haunts it/his sword for centuries, choosing heirs to defend it and drive out evil. The Once And Future King In Yellow
Isn’t it strange, how we tell the same stories over and over again? There was a king, and his court was full of heroes, and there was peace in the land. There was enchantment, and desire, and peril, but in the end betrayal from within brought an end to the age. And when the kingdom’s need is greatest, he will return from sleeping in the lake.
The anthology of King Arthur could certainly find room for another tale. Once, there was a great tournament, and the ladies Camilla and Cassilda were to judge who was the most worthy knight. Many brave lords broke their lances that day, but one rider was more graceful than all others. A mystery knight, he bore a gold shield and wore a white helm worked in a strange fashion. “Now, sir,” Camilla declared, when the jousting was finished, “it is time to unmask, that we may see our champion.” And in the same way across a thousand stories, the stranger replied “I wear no mask.”
I’m not sure if this is an idea for Dark Ages Cthulhu or modern Call of Cthulhu. But I really feel like there’s some interesting parallels to draw between the King Arthur story and the various accessories of Hastur. Something about the idealized world they’re selling, and the imagery of water and royalty. Maybe try running a campaign where the King in Yellow is feeding on this iconic theme to make itself real in the world!

What I like about the Knights: Bedwyr/Bedivere
I have had brainworms about this man since I first read the scene in good old Morte when I was 14 years old where he lied about throwing Excalibur into the lake. TWICE. And he only tosses it in after Arthur straight up threatens to kill him if he tries that shit again. Iconic. As such most of my love for him stems from Malory's interpretation specifically, which is funny because this motherfucker is only in the last few chapters.
To expand a bit on him lying at the end. We don't really know WHY he didn't chuck it. We know he thinks it'd cause problems, but no specifics. Did he want to use it himself? Did he think it'd help the kingdom to keep around? Was it ultimately sentimental? Selfish or selfless? Who knows!
In the older works he pops up in, he notably doesn't have any outstandingly special powers unless you count him being really good with thrusting weapons, which I don't because A) it can be read as him just being really quick and precise (which I personally find a more interesting interpretation, hard work and skill honed over a long time is way cooler than magic), and B) he gets power-creeped hard - and even then most writers either don't know or forget he's really good with swords and spears. My mans had his thunder stolen BAD.
In fact, he was the OG Prettiest Guy Who Isn't Arthur(tm), but then more Prettiest Guys Who Aren't Arthur(tm) kept getting added. So he's, unfortunately, usually shoved into the background unless someone else (usually Kay) drags a spotlight over to him.
Sidenote, I fully believe that Bedwyr and Kay are married. But really I'm just happy any time they appear together. A lot of the time the knights don't really feel like they're even friends in the 'normal human' way instead of the 'operating under 10 layers of chivalry and posturing' way, and at the very least Kay and Bedwyr actually enjoy being around each other.
Also, this motherfucker was there FROM THE BEGINNING (both in-universe and as like... a concept (he predates Jesus by a few hundred years)) and is usually the last guy left alive. But he's never a major player in anything except chucking the sword in a lake at the end. At most he's helping Kay with something or doing his job. A job he did presumably well because he held his position as Marshall for several decades and only lost it because everybody mcfucking bit it all at once.
If you want to look through a metanarrative lens, he's cursed to witness events and never influence them, but he gets one act of agency at the very end, which he gives up out of either fear or loyalty. And his reward is that he's left alone with a flippant order from his king to do whatever he wants. A lifetime of service rendered completely null and void by the complete loss of everything and everybody that he's ever known.. A lifetime of service to a system that was ultimately the root cause of the tragedy. And goddammit that's some spicy stuff to work with.
Anyway, my grand thesis statement is this: He exists in a sweet spot where he'd be an excellent POV and can be built on without in any way upsetting preestablished characterization. He's a relatively normal guy among complete and total freaks of nature (affectionate) who manages to outlive all of them. And the few things that are relatively set-in-stone about him (Close to Kay, only has one hand, there from the beginning, chucks sword into lake) are enough of a foundation to make him really interesting. To summarize:

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom 4K Ultra HD Review
Jason Momoa reprises his role as the King of the Seven Seas in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which comes 5 years after the original film was released. Once again Aquaman’s most notable rogue, Black Manta, is back seeking revenge for his deceased father. This time, Manta wields the power of the mythic Black Trident to unleash an ancient and sinister force. Hoping to end his reign of terror, Aquaman makes an unlikely alliance with his brother, Orm, the former king of Atlantis. Setting aside their differences, they join forces to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction.
Tumblr media
I must admit, even though I consider myself a superhero aficionado, it has been 5 years since the first solo Aquaman flick hit the theaters and remembering certain details regarding the movie were hazy for me at best. Fortunately, there are flashbacks to some of the pertinent moments from the first outing. As in the original movie, there is a healthy dose of action and adventure sprinkled with some hit and miss humor. I enjoyed the unlikely bond between the brothers, and it is hard to argue that Black Manta is one of the most iconic super villains to hit the silver screen in a comic book flick in recent memory. Unfortunately, Manta is paired with a far less interesting character named Dr. Shin (Randall Park) and a collection of henchmen and women with little to no depth in this underwater adventure.
Tumblr media
The visuals of this film are the real treat, and with the 4K format they really shine. The underwater computer-generated sequences are particularly aesthetically pleasing, but I really wish this movie stuck to scenes beneath the sea. There are tons of incredibly interesting creatures in the ocean that an Aquaman movie has yet to tap into. A number of times the movie gets caught trying to copy other films, particularly Star Wars, however, this movie lacks the interesting intertwining plot points and character development of the sci-fi classic. Even with the beautiful 4K eye candy most of its visuals project, there are the occasional, (Joss Whedon) Justice League-esque CGI that leaves you wondering, “where did that come from?”. I also did not care for Aquaman being out of his classic orange and green costume for most of the movie, as I felt that it robbed me of that superhero feel.
Tumblr media
VIDEO QUALITY 📽️ :  A
The 2160p transfer looks glorious, even with the aforementioned lackluster CGI in a few limited sequences. This liquid beauty really carry the visual end of this film.
AUDIO QUALITY 🔈 : A
The Dolby Atmos English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) really is a treat for the listener at home. The dialogue is clear, and the action sequences are bombastic as you are immersed deep into the sea of this film.
EXTRAS 📀 :  B
Included with this single disc release is a Digital Copy and several video extras listed below:
Finding the Lost Kingdom (21:22) - Jason Momoa, director James Wan, DC honcho Jim Lee, production design Bill Brzeski, and other key members of the cast and crew are your guides at this usually scenic behind-the-scenes featurette, which includes bits and pieces of on-set footage and others supportive clips.
Aquaman: Worlds Above and Below (9:39) - A like-minded look at various locales on both sides of the surface that covers special effects, location shoots, and Aquaman lore by way of a few vintage comics.
Atlantean Blood is Thicker than Water (4:17) - A short but sweet look at the history of Arthur and his half-brother Orm, again with some comics history and short interviews with Momoa and Patrick Wilson.
It's a Manta World (10:08) - Another character-focused featurette, this short piece sits down with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and others to speak about David Kane, Black Manta, the power suit, and more.
Necrus, the Lost Black City (5:51) - James Wan, producer Peter Safran, Bill Brzeski, and others chat briefly about the titular lost kingdom, its visual creation, and its history in the franchise.
Escape from the Deserter World (8:05) - Another like-minded featurette about the location -- or in this case, sequence -- featured in the film, a handful of familiar faces share about its creation and execution while being supported by behind-the-scenes footage, concept art, rehearsals, costume and set design, and more.
Brawling at Kingfish's Lair (4:07) - A quick look at one of the film's many visually overloaded action scenes and some of the goofier details and supporting characters featured in it.
Oh, Topo! (2:12) - And speaking of goofy supporting characters, this short and light-hearted tribute acts as an appreciation and highlight reel for everyone's favorite comedy relief cephalopod.
FINAL GRADE: C-
The only real emotions drawn from this bloated outing are the reconciliation between two brothers and the love for their mother. Aquaman should have submerged deeper into the sea, instead of trying to mimic the tales of old from the land above.
