Harold Land "Fox" 今度はハロルド・ランドの名盤。過小評価メンバーによるイーストのようなハードボイルドなウエスト・コーストを。 オリジナルは #HiFijazzRecords 612で、10年後の1969年 #ContemporaryRecords によるリマスター 盤‎(Stereo S7619)、1959年8月、Radio Recorders Studio B in Los Angeles 録音。 オリジナルはレーベル名の如く音質にこだわったアルバムだそうで、ランドの深い音をより鮮明に捉えていると。このレーベルは2年ほどで活動を休止、その後Contemporaryレーベルからジャケットを変更して再発されるほど内容が充実しているとの評。センターラベルのアルバム・タイトルがジャケットと同じフォントなのは珍しい。 #HaroldLand (ts) #DupreeBolton (tp) #HerbieLewis (b) #FrankButler (ds) #ElmoHope (p) Engineer - #ArtBecker , #DavidWiechman Liner Notes - #LeonardFeather Design - #GeorgeKershaw Cover Photography By - #RayAvery Producer - #DavidAxelrod カートリッジは、とりあえずShure SC35Cをセレクト。Contemporaryですがスタジオも違いますし、録音もRoy DuNannではないので、リアルさや余韻はありません。 初っぱな、ランドのタイトル・テーマ曲"The Fox"、いきなりスリリングで驚きますが、2曲目ホープのオリジナル"Mirror Mind Rose"は一転ホープの悩ましいマイナー調ナンバー。テーマの後のランドのソロがいい音で、トランペットのデュプリー・ボルトンも抑えたプレイ。そしてエルモ・ホープのバッキングが非常に素晴らしい。続く"One Second, Please"もホープ作ですが、今度はスピード感あるハード・バップ。Side 2はホープのオリジナル"Sims A-Plenty"でスタート、哀愁のピアノ・ソロと枯れたトランペット、タイトなドラムスが聴き処、これが盤イチかなぁ。続く"Little Chris"は、2曲目のランド作品で彼らしいハードボイルドなプレイにリズム陣も調和。最後はホープのオリジナル"One Down"、ランドとボルトンのユニゾン、各自の強烈なソロ演奏は、まるでイーストのようなエキサイティングさです。 ハロルド・ランドは相変わらず独特なトーンとブロウでハードボイルドなプレイを披露、本作はいい意味でウエストらしさを裏切られます。ローチ-ブラウン・カルテットで鍛えられた躍動感に満ち溢れた作品となっています。 私の大好きなエルモ・ホープ、本作のピアノは重く黒くスイング。バド・パウエルと親友ながら大きな注目を集めることもありませんでしたが、パウエルほどの派手さはないものの、持ち味である癖のない哀愁漂うフィーリングと何処か影あるスイング感は健在。 トランペットのデュプリー・ボルトン、ハードな演奏が意外と目立ちます。幻のトランペッターと言われる彼の参加は貴重なものだそうです。 そしてこちらも過少評価のフランク・バトラーの引き締まったドラミングも素晴らしい。 ハロルド・ランドの最高傑作の一つとして、ウエストコーストの底力を見せた作品として超オススメとの評！ #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル #レコード *作品を知るとジャズはもっと輝きます。情報くださる先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/B-1Afc1plqc/?igshid=z7pmlen39got

Phew! I know this is off center, it kinda bugs me but I decided to leave it in case I wanted to edit it more. :)c

I'm gonna be doing a challenge for myself! I'm redrawing certain things from the manga (courtesy of my gf providing me more than enough examples) and I decided to start off with a bang!

Took numerous uh, creative liberties as you could see. I tried to make it look as dramatic and spooky as possible. You think it worked?

Not to worry! Not all of them are this angsty! There's more fun and cute ones up ahead! (Also, that translation by be incorrect but it was on the panel I redrew and I thought it would be dramatic to put it. -shrug emoji-)
