#art theft is a bad thing

worst way to start my new year, thanks. i have a lot of things to say about these companies but i'm tired and just keeping it focused to the pin side of things for this one. do not ever buy pins from these companies, literally ALL of them are stolen from small artists like me. if you want to buy enamel pins, check out etsy, and artist's personal websites and shops! (though even Etsy has some bootleg pins that ship straight from china, so tread carefully…)

Every pin I've designed is, thus far, EXCLUSIVE to my etsy. if you find it anywhere else, it's been ripped off! and once these stupid bootlegs pop up, it's basically a never ending game of whack-a-mole trying to get them all taken down...

We recently left Halshevar, and are nearly reaching Queenstone, the capital of Ayelbirn. Our party is Attempting to make it to Ilor- but it sounds like there’s a non-zero chance we’ll be detoured towards Vethnoac, the dragon kingdom.

(Our party guide, a young diplomat- Corvus, is wanted in Vethnoac for crimes of theft, deception, and murder 😬. Excited to see how we get him out of this mess, because at the moment there is Not a lot of leverage to work with.)

hi! I’m just a baby artist with barely any followers but you seem like you have many and are also very anti AI so I wanted to ask if you could maybe spread the message that the picture of Maedhros reading under a tree that is being reblogged recently (I've seen it on my dash at least 4 times already) is a) stolen and reposted (the original artist is silmaspens) and b) was run through an AI filter beforehand by the person who stole the picture. The logo of the AI app they used is even still on the left corner of the image. I find it very upsetting that someone would not just steal someone else’s art but also alter it so blatantly via AI and then repost it as their own. here is a recent reblog of what I’m talking about:

In this case it’s not even AI art. The dumb program didn’t even generate it. There is a Very Obvious Logo Right There.

That’s even worse.

I can’t even begin to tell you how incredibly disrespectful it is to put someonens hard work into a machine, whether because you believed it could be “fixed” or because you “want to make your own images”.

Be a little more diligent, guys. Please. The biggest thing you can do (outside of trying to tell the person that they blatantly committed art theft) is by not giving it notes. Don’t reblog it, don’t like it, don’t interact with it.

with all that said: if anyone can find the original drawing from that post, please send it my way so we can show it a little more love. thanks. <3

I miss when it was just neuralblender-type stuff - nothing was really recognizable, and it made for some fun images! like:

this sort of thing was really fun to mess around with! there are still copyright issues ofc - AI should only train on art from people who've opted-in, or stuff from the public domain - but the vagueness of these images is somewhat transformative, and they're never going to look exactly like whatever art they trained on.

Drawing inspiration from the same concept is one thing, but more-or-less tracing a model and barely tweaking it is a whole other kettle. I'm not going to bat for Nintendo here, because at the end of the day no matter what happens I doubt Palworld will put a dent in Pokemon's profits.

anyway if you're having some uncomfy feelings about posting unsourced art/photos in the past because of that post i made about how to identify stolen images, maybe hunting through my blog for any possible whisper of hypocrisy is not the most productive place to direct that energy. i'm not here to shame anyone, just to provide information on how to make this website a little friendlier to artists by discouraging sourceless uploads. lack of engagement on unsourced posts will cause most uploaders to change their behavior for the better.

Are you pro-ai art? Because that one "copyright art style" post you reblogged is in defense of ai art, by an ai "artist"

my feelings for this are more nuanced but in general I'm vehemently against AI "art" in it's current state (I had my art that was A GIFT FOR A FRIEND used in an data set and I hated it) because of the unethical nature of how they generate shit in the first place.

HOWEVER. I think "making art style copyrights" a thing will objectively make things even worse. I've seen petty internet drama over "art style theft" and frankly I'd rather it stay petty internet drama only.

I didn't know the post was by someone who uses AI but I still agree with it.

I wish to apologize for the lack of updates for anything really.

I was discussing over on my main, but the gist for the main demotivation source is that my friend and I were dealing with a 13 year old stealing/tracing both of our arts/refs, and (after we politely told them to fuck off at first, and even notified other server mods abt it) using our stuff without credit (and then started bitching about it when asked to credit the OG artist).

Speaking of, if you have anyone in any of your servers with the username “theunicorngirl6109” (usually accompanied by some sort of BF pfp with a display name of said BF’s au name), be careful when posting your art and keep an eye on what they post. They will steal people’s shit, trace it, and/or use it without credit, and then bitch about it when called out (but only if publicly humiliated! If it’s done privately they will literally act like nothing happened, and if anyone asks, they will word it in a way that makes you guys look like the villains. Also guilt tripping… a lot of guilt tripping). Their tumblr username was something like “yourlocalcostplayer” if you wish to block them here as well <3 (if you do see this, which you shouldn’t, I hope you like the free shoutout! /sar)

But because of that, and personal health problems, I haven’t had much motivation to write lately. Hope y’all understand and have a better day than I’ve been having <3 (unless you’re them, which you shouldn’t be able to see my profiles anymore anyways if it worked right-)

i was really freaked out when i saw it and still kind of am but thankfully it could have been much worse considering all the reposters apologized and took it down without me having to fight too hard about it (though theyre still weird as hell for doing that in the first place dont get me wrong. why are you treating my normal platonic art of brothers hugging as romantic. why are you viewing their relationship that way at all. gross).. hopefully it wont happen again

Ai art can literally never be 'the future' it's literally not possible. since ai is trained on existing art even if we somehow replaced all human art with AI it's not able to 'invent' or 'innovate' because it can only use what's already made. it can't think and make new from old it can only make old from old. Best case scenario is ai art fizzles out and dies or it keeps quietly trailing behind real art. But in the unlikely event we do away with real art it can only lead to stagnation.
