some of my personal superstitions/beliefs drawn from nowhere other than "I Just Know"

- Everything has energy and everything absorbs energy. Things that happened in a place never truly go away. There is always something left behind.

- Most hauntings, cursed objects, lucky objects, etc are caused by this. Rarely is it a full, actual ghost, or spirit of other kinds- though those exist, too. But most of the time, it's the manifest energy of Something That Happened. A room where someone lived the unhappiest years of their life may be haunted now, not by their ghost, but by the trauma they left behind. It is possible, even, to haunt yourself.

- The same works for blessed or lucky objects. If someone loved something for many years, and gave it to you because they love you, it will bring good things to you.

- You cannot steal someone's luck, or blessing. A lucky charm that has been stolen can become a curse instead.

- Some things, however, are inherently a little bit lucky. An acorn. A coin. A snail's shell. Serendipitously finding a lucky object is better than buying one; being given a lucky object from someone who has loved it is best of all.

- Anything can become magic; haunted, cursed, blessed, lucky, negative energy, positive energy. It all depends on what happened to it, or what happened around it. If it was loved, if it was hated, if it was important to someone. Grandma's lucky charm is lucky because she loves it and believes it, and has loved and believed it for many many years- not because it inherently always was. A cursed object may not contain a ghost, or have been cursed by a witch, but if it was in your home for 40 years, and every day you looked at it and hated it, it contains that hate now. You've cursed it yourself.

- This also is why old things tend to be more haunted- they've seen more. They've absorbed more. They know more.

- If the same object, the same image, the same figure, continually shows up around you, it means Something. What it means could be different for every person. Maybe to you, an owl was there when your mother died, so an owl means death to you; so if you are suddenly noticing owls all around you, maybe its an omen. Maybe it means you're thinking about your mother. But maybe to me, an owl means protection, an owl means I am safe. These can both be true.

- Stepping on a snail is very bad luck.

- Dropping an acorn into a river is good luck, but even better if dropped from a bridge.

- Dropping a flower into a river is good luck if it lands face up and floats, but bad luck if its just swept away or turns over. If a flower is dropped into a river from a bridge, and you see it float through to the other side (and remains face up) it is the best luck of all.

- Seeing an intact mushroom while out on a walk is good luck. Seeing a broken one is bad luck. Stepping on one and breaking it yourself is the worst luck.

- Breaking a doll's face is horrendously negative. Maybe not 100% always a curse, but it's highly likely. A doll you have broken is your responsibility now.

first, I want to apologize for being a bit absent on the blog! ❤️‍🩹 I still do check the notifs every day to see what y'all are thinking of the outfits, even if I haven't been responding to asks ☺️

second, I wanted to announce that for the moment, I will be switching the blog from posting 5 polls a day to 3. I almost made this change a month ago, but then decided I would try to stick with the posting schedule for a little longer, but as it stands right now, I feel as though I keep falling behind in queuing things and it has become a point of stress in my life, which I would like it not to be

as you may or may not be aware, I did make a call for assistants to help me run the blog this summer, but unfortunately my intentions to do proper onboarding keep getting derailed by personal things that have left me with almost no energy for that kind of additional work. and now that I'm back in my phd program, I have very little time to devote to providing the scaffolding/support that I would like to be able to offer

therefore, I'm going to keep the blog at 3 polls a day possibly until may when I am done with my school term and could actually look at doing some dedicated onboarding, at which time I'm hoping we could go back up to five polls per day

I want to apologize for this, since I know many of you enjoy checking the polls throughout the day, but I hope 3 will still feel like enough to keep things fun while we're in this intermediate period ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has submitted images to the blog, and to let this be a humble request to please continue doing so if that's something you're interested in! 🥰🥰 submissions have truly been keeping the blog afloat whilst I've been working through some stuff that has taken a lot of my time and energy, and I am so so appreciative of that! 🥰🥰

Valentine's is Over! What now?

Hello! This is a bit of an update post now that DCA Valentine's has finsihed up. Feel free to read what you want (though I suggest at least skimming all of it so you're aware of what's happening with me) and make sure to vote in the polls!

Gen writing update

I had a few requests come in after they closed (no worries to those who did so! I know it was a little confusing regarding such) so i'll be writing those when i get the chance and sending them out into the world, beyond that however, any request-based things are closed (for now) if I get any during this closed period I'm sorry but I'll have to ignore them/not do them. I'm too busy with life/other wips to add them to my list, sorry!

Holiday Spirit is going to be my writing focus for the next couple weeks! It's about halfway done and I'd like it finished so I can move on with things lol

Confused spirit is going to take a bit, as like i've said before I'm writing multiple chapters back to back for the purpose on ensuring proper flow/building my buffer back up, i know it's been a bit but believe me it's been on my mind guhh

In general i have some shorter form content/drabbles & oneshots I want to write, so be on the lookout for those >:)c

Going Dark

I was saving this for the end just because it sounds worse than it actually is.

I'm going to take a break from posting/tumblr/etc for about a week or two and spend some extra hours doing my research stuff. I'm not behind or anything (and def always put it and school first dw) but I kind of want to try and get ahead with it just because of how strict my timeline to finish is 😅

I also just want a bit of a break from constantly writing and maybe do some other hobbies when im not on the research grind. I'll be back at it (again more casually) in a few weeks tho!

I don't like wading into Ao3 debates, but I want to give my professional opinion on Ao3 with regard to archives vs. libraries.

I am a professional librarian (MSLS) and I have worked in both archives and public libraries and a lot of the confusion and concern I see surrounding Ao3 is a fundamental misunderstanding of How Archives Work.

An archive is a collection related to a subject. That subject is often a person but sometimes a field or concept or project. And the purpose of an archive is to keep everything. And I mean everything. I was going to say "short of biohazards" but since I know there's a sealed R. Crumb Devil Gal chocolate bar in the UNC Chapel Hill archives, we really do mean everything.

When a collection of materials--which are usually unique and original and can be photos, manuscripts, letters, recordings (audio and/or visual), notes and notebooks, objects, published books, whatever--on and/or from the subject arrive at the archive, they are examined, preserved for longevity, accessioned and cataloged (added to the archive's records), and added to the archive. You measure collections in linear feet. As in, once it's all preserved and boxed and secure, you note how many feet of shelf space it takes up. And some of y'all on Ao3 have a lot of linear feet to your name (and I'm proud of you).

This is an archive: it is designed to preserve the original materials related to a subject. That is its purpose. Archives are how we have the original scroll manuscript of On the Road, for example, or the Lomax recordings of American folksongs, or Tijuana Bibles, or James Joyce's loveletters to Nora.

Now you, a member of the public, can access some archives. Some are easier to access than others. The one I worked in was open to the public; good luck getting into the British Archives without a good reason.

So now apply this to Ao3--which is an archive both in name and in purpose. It is intended to preserve fan-created content long term. And this means everything, whether you personally like the materials or not. It is a repository for as much as possible.

And the "whether you personally like the materials or not" is important, hence why I mentioned Jim's loveletters and Tijuana Bibles in particular. (RIP Jim, you would have loved pegging.)

If it's made by fans and it exists, we should keep it to document the history and progression of fandom. That is the point. We have lost enough materials related to the subject of fans of media and we don't need to lose any more.

The fact of the matter is that Ao3 is only one facet of the OTW, which preserves other fan-related materials (convention booklets and zines, for example). Somehow Ao3, an archive on the subject of fanfiction, has been divorced from the rest of the project, mostly by way of "purity culture" and panic over "dangerous" fiction.

The fact that you can go through an archive and find interesting information is the other side of archives. No, they shouldn't be like the banker's box of old letters stuffed in my closet. Yes, they should be organized and as accessible as is appropriate for the state of the materials.

It's really, really cool to find stuff in an archive, I'm not even going to lie. I have done it before and I will do it again. And yet there are other items in an archive that I might not want or need or be interested in at all--but they're still there. That's the cataloging and accessioning: to keep up with what's there, to stay "on topic" with collecting, and to be able to find things in that archive. Bless the tag wranglers who are doing the cataloging at Ao3.

The pearl clutching seems to come from 1. the creation of "dangerous" fanworks and 2. public access to those "dangerous" fanworks. These are issues of "purity culture" and opinions on censorship and should not involve Ao3.

Ao3, under the umbrella of the OTW, is a documentation and preservation project first and foremost.

This is the thing, Abby is very specifically a scholar of historical fashion. For whatever other foibles she may have as a person, she is incredibly knowledgable about modes of dress for the times referenced, and while she's only looking at a few examples in this video, there is a Loooong laundry list of period dramas that have abysmal costuming choices.

See also, the great Frock Flicks, and their annual "Snark Week" . (Recommended, it's a great time if you're into historical costuming)

Abby pointing out the inaccuracies in costuming in these movies isn't an insecurity about confident women, it is a very confident conclusion from someone who has done enough research to have produced multiple books on the subject.

I would really, really appreciate it if everyone who would be interested in something like that would make a ton of noise and make it really known — because I would be thrilled to explore that. I think in this current media landscape, if there’s a huge amount of public demand, then that is something that becomes impossible to ignore. okay i've been saying i'd make this post forever and it's uh. long. so i decided to split it up into four parts so i can get this first bit out and let it stop haunting me and so it's not 50 miles long.

disclaimer: i'm not definitively saying sir paul mccartney is queer. i mean i really firmly think he is but it's all just speculation. also, if he is, there's obviously a reason he's not out about it & he deserves to have his privacy respected. i just personally find the dominant narrative in the fandom & even in larger spaces that poor pining queer john was in love with tragically heterosexual paul completely unconvincing and neeeeeed to be insane for a minute here

and again this one COULD just be a lil homophobic joke but idk man his tone here is very different and the fact that he says he couldn't say that on air & john says he'll get in trouble is just. interesting. it's Interesting.

5- "A 26 year old queer never to get married."

Half an hour later it was very quiet, except for a few sobs, and then we decided that we had to see him just once more. We opened the gates and walked slowly in. Someone rang the doorbell. Waited, no one came, rang again. Rang again. Paul answered. We just stood there. God what do we say? "Yes, what do you want?" he said, as if we'd just come to borrow sugar. C. ran out. Someone asked if it was tomorrow, and he said, "Tomorrow." It went quiet again. "What's this - Heartbreak Hotel? What do you think I am a 26 year old queer never to get married? Oh, stick around kids!" We just looked at each other. Oh God, Paul, what have we done now. All we wanted to do was stand there and talk awhile. What was the point in shouting at us like that? We stood there, tears falling but there was no sound. "Apple Scruffs Come to Dinner" by Andrew Bailey, 1970 (x), bold mine

again, like the last one, this one is very... i think he was absolutely being homophobic here, but it's a very telling outburst. like he's yelling this harsh enough to make these girls cry.

6- Harry Harrison's "gorgeous tan"

moving onto this wild quote from many years from now by barry miles about george's older brother (bold mine):

"George Harrison’s elder brother Harry had been to Christmas Island and arrived back with a gorgeous tan in his army uniform and we thought, My God, he’s been made a man of. You used to see this quite regularly, people would be made a man of."

7- gender neutral language

let's get into some interesting gender neutral language he uses. now, would this be Particularly compelling with a modern celebrity? not really. but most people his age really don't talk gender neutrally unless it's to be vague On Purpose. like this bit from many years from now, where before this he'd been using exclusively "girl" and "she/her" pronouns talking about hookups, it suddenly shifts to very purposefully vague (bold mine):

With a lot of those people I met and related to, albeit for a short time, I've mercifully forgotten them and I don't really remember what went on, thank goodness. There may have been a few drinks involved and I was a little merry and, you know, you slip back to someone's flat... My main feeling really is one of relief. You do feel like some of it was outrageous. But I'm glad to have had a slightly outrageous period in my life, as long as it didn't hurt anybody, because I'd always felt maybe my character was too careful. I think the great thing was I never had any deep, dark secrets. That's what the papers wanted. They wanted me to be hiding a little Miss Whiplash somewhere, and for the flat to be in my name. But it was never that. It was always a one-night stand with whoever was around and wanted to party.

8/9/10- the "binary" (ft. a bit of john)

a lot of people use this to point to him being oblivious, which i do get, but i want to focus more on the line "it is you dreaming, it is your mind it's all happening in". like he seems interested and fascinated by the revelations we have in our dreams- hardly repressed or scared.

this fun little quote from body count by francie schwartz:

note here though that francie is a notoriously unreliable source on paul. she hates him and honestly makes some pretty homophobic digs at him & others pretty frequently. so it is interesting that she denies he's gay, but says he might have gone that way. given how short of a time they were together and how weird their relationship was, i wouldn't really expect him to be open about that with her- still, she noticed something there too.

16- homosexual handbook

paul was mentioned in the homosexual handbook by angelo d'arcangelo in 1968 under a list of famous homosexuals. it's very tongue in cheek and says this "may just be wishful thinking on (my) part"

and obviously not proof as the book takes a very playful and unserious tone. he does provide this little disclaimer though, which i think is interesting:

because once again like... WHERE are these rumors about paul being gay? because the rest of this list, as far as i can tell (ngl i did not do a deep read there) are men who have/had gay rumors about them or were gay. this comes up more in the john post as well, but i seriously need to know just how many rumors there were about him being gay.

• Especially if you have an 'unacceptable' body type, they are soo all over you. Don't let them hear someone saying anything remotely bad about you or they will lose their shit.

• Kirishima def brings both you and Kats a snack or drink from the venting machine whenever he gets himself something.

• bro, if you're wearing something more revealing or showing more skin, they're dead and feral😩 (especially if you don't show skin a lot or rarely wear revealing clothing.)

• anyone you hate or don't like? Omfg same! They don't either! (If u do they do too).

• will not hesitate to beat your ass when training together. They're both hard on you because they want you to fight and use your quirk to your full potential, though, Eijiro is slightly more careful since he doesn't wanna badly cut you with his hardening. Katsuki is extremely caring tho if he does end up going too far with you or Eijiro.

• they're so loveable. Eijiro is always trying to hold hands with Katsuki and you, even if it's just pinkies. wants to wear y'all's clothes, gives y'all matching bracelets, those things.

• Katsuki though just complains but does do wtvr you ask him too! Def big on acts of service and making sure y'all are not overdoing or overworking yourself, eating enough, resting enough, etc. Although, he lovess loves when Eijiro or you give him head scratches, only in private tho! (He won't fight it if he's tired).

• you're cold? Don't worryyyy they've gotchu! You will be wearing both of their jackets/coats at the same time, AND wearing an extra pair of gloves Katsuki brought (if you're outside, Winter time..) Now you're overheated!

• even if they aren't interested, they'll still watch whatever you put on to watch on yt. They don't know who tf Jaykubscoutz is but hey he's kinda funny..

• if you're too full to finish the rest of your food or wtvr you're eating, or don't like it, give it to one of them and they'll eat it for you.

• if you wear makeup, they love watching you put it on and get ready. Eijiro is the only enthusiastic one if you suggest putting makeup on them. Katsuki won't let you go anywhere near his eyes.

• you're sick? Oh no! That's okay😊 you've got Eijiro comforting you, cuddling and giving you head pats while Katsuki makes you soup and gives you medicine; water, crackers, the good stuff. You get better within 2 days thanks to them!

• if you're on you're period they don't want you doing too much tbh. They know you have to go to your classes, train and stuff but if they can help it they'll get you your food instead or bring it to you. Just ask and you'll get it! They just want to make your period easier for you. They're very understanding.
