SOPHIE WASN’T SURE WHY she was nervous, but she was, as her fist collided with the wooden door in front of her. She picked at the skin on her lips, a nervous habit, and waited for the door to open. She shouldn’t have been nervous; it was just her brother after all. Her brother who she hadn’t seen in almost a year, who she hadn’t kept in great contact with. Maybe that’s why she was nervous. Sophie looked around while she waited, noticing Ashton’s familiar car in the driveway, another one she didn’t recognize, and a motorcycle parked by the mailbox.
“Coming! Coming!” Sophie smiled at the familiar sound of her brother’s voice and her nervousness was replaced with excitement. She missed her brother, they were quite close, and she couldn’t believe she had gone so long without seeing him.
The front door swung open, Sophie’s brother’s jaw dropped and eyes wide at the sight of her, and she waved shyly. She was scared of his reaction; was he mad at her? Did he hate her? She wasn’t sure what to expect from him. “Hi Ash.”
“Holy shit,” Ashton exhaled an incredulous laugh and pulled Sophie into him for a much needed and very long overdue hug. Ashton squeezed her body, not really believing that she was actually standing at his doorstep after not seeing her for such a long time. “Holy shit, Soph. I missed you so much.”
“Missed you, too, Ash.” Sophie’s voice was muffled, with her face being pressed against Ashton’s chest, but she didn’t mind. She hugged her brother back, not wanting to let go, since she missed him so much. Ashton pulled away, resting his hands on her shoulders, and smiled widely.
“I can’t believe you’re here.” Ashton looked down at the ground next to Sophie’s feet, seeing two duffle bags next to them and furrowed his eyebrows. “With bags?” He raised an eyebrow at her and she offered him a sheepish smile.
“Yeah...” Sophie exhaled a nervous laugh. This was the moment of truth. “About that, well, Jack and I, we broke up, and I don’t really have anywhere else go.” Sophie put on her best pouty face, the face she knew that Ashton could never say no to, and tucked her hair behind her ear. “So, I was kind of hoping I could crash here? Not for long, though.” She quickly added. “Just until I find a good job and can get back up on my feet.”
“Stop babbling,” Ashton picked her bags up with a smile. “Course you can stay here, Soph. Stay as long as you want, okay?”
That was easier than expected, Sophie thought. She really thought she would have to put up a fight and beg. “Really?”
Ashton rolled his eyes, but laughed at his hesitant sister as she followed him inside of his house that she hadn’t been to in so long. She looked around, noticing that not much has changed. “Yes, Soph. You’re my sister, I’m not going to deny you a place to live.”
“Thanks, Ash.” Sophie sighed in relief. “I appreciate it.”
Ashton left her bags by the front door and motioned for Sophie to follow him through the house and to the screened in porch, where he and his friends were hanging out before Sophie knocked and rang the doorbell. “Since when do you drive a motorcycle?” Sophie asked before they reached the porch.
“What?” Ashton laughed.
“The motorcycle parked outside.”
“Oh right,” Ashton nodded. “Not mine. It’s my buddy, Calum’s.”
Sophie nodded her head, although she didn’t know the hell Calum was, but didn’t ask anymore questions. Ashton swung the porch door open and Sophie was instantly met with three men, two of whom she already knew, one she didn’t, and the stench of cigarettes and weed, which didn’t surprise her much.
Ashton’s friends looked up, their eyes widening at the girl they hadn’t seen since high school, and they laughed in disbelief. Luke was the first one to stand up, passing the joint over to, who Sophie assumed, was Calum, since he was the only one she didn’t know and drove the motorcycle outside.
“Holy shit!” Luke wrapped his arms around her shoulders in a quick hug. The two of them considered each other friends since Luke and Michael were around her so much, being best friends with Ashton, while they were growing up. “Sophie Irwin? Jesus. Haven’t seen you since fuckin’ high school.”
Michael was next, hugging Sophie and telling her how good she looked, to which Ashton frowned at, but didn’t comment on. “Well, yeah, it’s been awhile.” Sophie laughed. Luke had gotten taller and more muscular and no doubt more attractive. Michael as well, only his hair wasn’t a crazy color like it used to be in high school.
“Soph, this is Calum.” Ashton pointed to the man that was sitting on the end of the couch, slouched down, legs out and parted, holding a joint between his thumb and pointer finger, a beanie hiding his hair, looking as uninterested as one could ever be. “Cal, this is my younger sister, Sophie.”
Calum simply nodded his head in her direction, offering no words, and continued hitting the joint he had rolled for him and his friends. He watched as Sophie pursed her lips, almost awkwardly, and shifted her purse that was hanging on her shoulders. Calum felt her eyes linger for a moment too long and his snapped back to her, causing her to quickly look away out of embarrassment of being caught and nervousness and turn to Ashton.
“So, uh where am I sleeping, Ash?”
“Oh, right!” Ashton quickly hit the joint that Calum handed him, offering it to Sophie who shook her head no with a polite ‘no thanks’, before handing it to Michael. “I’ll show you to your new room.”
Sophie followed Ashton back inside, feeling the eyes of his friends on her, but ignored it, and went upstairs with Ashton, who had her bags in his hands. They walked down the hallway and stopped in front of a door that was shut. “This is technically the guest bedroom, but now,” Ashton dropped her bags on the floor. “It’s yours.” He grinned.
Sophie looked around at the seafoam green room and took in her surroundings. There was a queen size bed in the middle of the room, a dresser across from it with a small TV on it, a closet door next to the large window, and another shut door.
“This,” Ashton opened the door to reveal a Jack and Jill bathroom; a door leading to another bedroom on the other side of the bathroom she was on. “Will be your bathroom, but you’ll have to share it with Cal.”
“He lives here too?” Sophie suddenly felt nervous. She was moving in with her brother and his friend, who he didn’t even discuss it with, and now she had to share a bathroom with him? This wasn’t her ideal situation, but she knew she couldn’t complain about it, for she had nowhere else to live. “Shouldn’t you ask him if it’s okay that I’m staying here?”
“He won’t care,” Ashton waved her worries off. “Plus, it’s my house and he only recently moved in. And he’s really not home much.” Her nervousness subsided just a little bit and she nodded her head. The all white and marble bathroom was clean, much to her surprise, and had a decent sized shower, which she was happy about. “Well, I’ll leave you to unpack, yeah?”
“Yeah.” Sophie smiled. Ashton bid her a goodbye, but she stopped him before he exited her room completely. “And Ash?” Ashton turned around expectantly. “Thank you for letting me stay here.”
“Anything for you, lil sis.”
Sophie unpacked the stuff she had brought from her old apartment she shared with her, now ex boyfriend, and filled most of the drawers and half of the dresser. She had more stuff back at the apartment, and she knew she would have to go get it at some point, but she was going to put it off for as long as she possibly could. She didn’t want to see her ex-boyfriend anytime soon after their messy breakup.
After finishing unpacking her clothes, she trudged into the bathroom, makeup bag and bottles of shampoo and conditioner in hand, not paying much attention to what was around her, when she bumped into Calum. She stumbled back at bit, his height and hard build catching her off guard, but he quickly steadied her before she fell and dropped everything.
“Shit,” Sophie cursed. “I’m sorry.
Calum stood there, eyes low and red from the joint he had just smoked, with furrowed eyebrows. He saw the stuff in her hands and looked behind her, seeing more of her stuff in what he and Ashton considered the guest bedroom.
“You movin’ in?” He asked, his voice deep and raspy, and Sophie swallowed the nervous lump in her throat. There was no denying that the man in front of her, the man she didn’t know and would have to share a bathroom and house with, was beyond attractive, and honestly, Sophie was a little bit intimidated by him.
“Uh, y-yeah.” Sophie cleared her throat. “Is, uh, is that okay?”
Calum looked at Sophie, really looked at her; the way her long dark brown- almost black- hair was tied up in a half up half down look, the way her bright green eyes were wide as she looked up at him, the way she kept nervously licking her lips, and the freckles dotting her pale skin, and Calum concluded that she and Ashton didn’t look much alike.
After a while of Calum staring at Sophie, taking in every feature of her face and her outfit that consisted of a pair of jean shorts, a cropped sweater, and black combat boots, he simply shrugged his broad shoulders. “Whatever.” He left Sophie with his one worded answer and left the bathroom without another look or another word, leaving Sophie there confused and feeling a bit unwelcome.
Sophie quickly put her makeup bag by the sink that looked unoccupied, with there being two, and put her shampoo, conditioner, razor, and body wash in the shower. After completing everything, Sophie plopped down onto her new bed and exhaled a sigh as she ran her fingers through her hair. She wasn’t sure what she was expecting when she planned to move in with Ashton, but she definitely wasn’t expecting the mysterious, way too attractive, boy down the hall from her.
