halloween marathon 2022

as someone with anxiety who gets paranoid, i don't watch horror movies often. but, today i still wanted to watch films that i think would be in-theme for halloween but still be tolerable for me. so here are my halloween picks bc i'm a coward (p.s.: all of them are first watches)

american psycho (2000) dir. mary harron — 4.5/5

i felt insane by just watching this

i think what makes this filmbro movie about masculinity so good is the fact that it's directed and written by women and a queer man AND patrick being a music nerd is so funny to me

the way it was filmed, the fictional documentary style, is kinda rare to see (to me at least) and i wish i could explain it better but i like it !! i guess it makes the movie feel more real in a way, and this makes me wanna watch more movies like it. it feels like a slice of life?? but fantasy?? like a regular youtube documentary😭 /pos. like its about vampires dealing w modern life and they filmed it in a very modern way and i think thats neat!!!

this one was actually scary (at least compared to the previous movies i watched today). i think i would've appreciated it much more if i didn't watch a video essay about this before watching the actual movie (and basically discovering the entire story so i guess that ruined it...)

but holy shit well done though that was incredible??? it got me constantly wondering what's real or not. it definitely made me uncomfortable

i absolutely love the themes explored in this film (which are quite similar to black swan) (and those themes were handled INCREDIBLY WELL), like the issues of the entertainment industry (particularly exploitation and fandoms), what reality is (pls it got me confused so much like what the hell), and the artist going insane. the similarities to black swan are so obvious.

then again i wish i could've appreciated this much more so i'll def rewatch it sometime

aNyway I read this Persona album review from The Hollywood Reporter and I was confused + disappointed + sad. Here’s why:

His actual review of the album was strange and dismissive. Here’s what I mean by ‘strange’. He said basically every song was bad (which is his opinion of course) but he did it in such a weird way. Kind of like how he described the whole album as “a tasty snack that leaves a bitter aftertaste” lmao what?? He’s trying to spice up his piece with some rhetorical techniques I guess... He could have just listed technical reasons for him not liking songs and moved on but he had to make everything super spicy (for lack of a better word). This is somewhat understandable because he’s a journalist and he’s trying to add interest to his piece and I feel a bit ridiculous giving this any more attention so let’s move on. More importantly, he was very dismissive. He criticizes the album line up, says the group has no clear music taste and calls them “prolific dabblers” (I guess he’s trying to say it’s hard to tell what genre they actually prefer/aim to work in? It’s weird how some see this as a con but others admire this sort of diversity. I guess I can understand it somewhat, but personally, I like hearing lots of different sounds from artists I follow). Some of my other favorite lines include “The songs play like unintentionally comedic genre mistakes”, “The new record is bracketed by its weakest tracks, “Intro: Persona” and “Dionysus,” particularly off-putting songs that leave a lingering sour aftertaste” and “Like much of the mega-pop-artists’ work, this album in particular feels like it’s packaged on an assembly line and by committee”. My head hurts from trying to stop at three lines this whole review is absolute gold. He calls RM’s line about Icarus in Boy With Luv “stodgy” and “middle-school-level” and then sums up all their references as clumsy. His perspectives on their songs really make me sad because it seems like he got no meaning from them and it’s like he was hearing a whole different album than what I listened to. It isn’t the fact that they weren’t his taste that upsets me, it is the fact that he felt they were so empty when I found them to be so full. (This really applies to their work as a whole - not every song is super meaningful to me, but regardless, they are genuine and there are some that have stolen my heart).

He actually made a four-in-one in one album/artist/genre/fanbase review. I have a hard time understanding this. Admittedly I don’t read album reviews often but I am pretty sure that critics aren’t supposed to be reviewing entire genres(fact-check me please. I read some about writing album reviews and I didn't see much on this point). If he was going to do such an extensive review I wish it had been a separate piece not labeled as an album review and I would hope it would also boast well-informed opinions based on extensive research (am I hypocrite?). To me, it seemed that he didn’t actually know that much about the group, the fanbase, or the genre and, in turn, he seemed to know very little about the songs. It felt like he was writing off not just this album, or BTS’ music, but BTS themselves as fake and shallow. Like they are sell-out musicians who were perfectly crafted to have mass appeal and have shaped themselves for success in America and that’s all there is to them???? Their songs apparently have no meaning? It’s like he takes these tiny seeds of truths from the Korean entertainment industry or global marketing of popular artists and uses them to grow a commercial farm of opinions (I think I need some metaphor tips from him my game is weak). This article seriously gave me flashbacks to that interview/commentary from The Times. Throughout, I got the sense that he was just shoving in certain passionate opinions he had which were formed through minimal research. Like he just went on social media, watched a few videos, browsed a few fan tweets, heard a bit of the music and took it from there. He comes off as condescending and his delivery reads like he thinks he is gifting some profound revelations to all the intellectually-stunted fans out there. To sum it up it seemed like he didn’t understand that A) BTS’ fanbase is huge and is made up of many different people B) BTS are actual human beings C) The messages in the music (and there are messages there) are genuine. I think this article on the whole Times controversy sums up my feelings on several issues fairly well. (I know it’s Pop Buzz I’m linking it bc the perspective is valuable tRuSt mE pls)

The acknowledgments he made throughout the piece. For example, he acknowledged that their music has helped people but it felt like at the same time he was labeling people who were touched by their music as shallow. I should have probably expected this because generally large followings get shit for stuff like that but I hoped it wouldn’t be mentioned (meaningfulness behind different music is always being debated). He says that in this album “BTS keeps doing BTS” but makes it feel like a diss. Like some sort of pat on the head for everyone involved (sure honey BTS is one of a kind...one of a kind at being stellar a commercial product to please the masses). Similarly, he acknowledges that they have meanings in their songs but sums it up as “Reddit-bait” and paints it all as a marketing tactic. There is some truth in the point that adding lots of easter eggs and stuff is to garner more interest, but there are some very heartfelt messages in their music as well and it seems like a sizable oversimplification to chalk all of it up as part of a ploy for money and fame.  

Sort of disclaimers:

I got the sense that reviews aren’t supposed to just be about whether something is genuine or not but more about whether it is technically good (which is why I stated that, in my opinion, the writer should have focused more on that and less on social commentary). I don’t think BTS is a revolutionary group whose music or concepts are unparalleled. I am not a crazy fan with too much time on my hands, I’ve been thinking about the different takes on music people have for a while and have wanted to write something specifically like this since The Times incident. I welcome commentary and I want people to continue to share honest opinions and feelings I just hope for some more professional (is insightful a better word?) commentary from people whose job it is to write reviews. I understand writers are busy and no one has time to do extreme research but I still think more extensive research is necessary for opinion pieces (reviews, commentary, etc.). I mentioned “seeds of truth” earlier and I think the reviewer has some good points they are just addressed horribly and don’t really directly relate to the album itself.

BTS’ Reaction to Finding You Dancing to Blood Sweat & Tears

Kim Seokjin (Jin)

Since he himself is not the best dancer in the group (although still a great one), Seokjin admires anyone who can dance well or even tries themselves at complicated choreographies. And Blood Sweat & Tears is definitely not a simple one, and on top of that a really sexy dance. When your boyfriend came home from a long night of recording, he did not expect to hear his song blasting from your shared living room. Surprised and curious, your boyfriend would quietly close the front door and slowly walk closer to where the sound came from, cautious as not to attract your attention. When he peeked into the living room, his jaw almost dropped at the unexpected sight of you dancing to the famous and familiar music. Seokjin would patiently wait for you to finish the choreography, enjoying every second that your body was moving to the rhythm of the song. When you finally noticed him, your boyfriend would give you a wide smile and ask why you had never told him that you like dancing, and that the two of you should dance together more often from now on.

Min Yoongi (Suga) Yoongi is usually so tired after practicing and composing that he would not even think about dancing in his free time. That's why he couldn't completely understand why you didn't rest in your spare time like he did. One night, when he came back from work, he was ready to take a shower and go to sleep when he noticed loud music emanating from the living room. He came closer, thinking that you were a little crazy cleaning up at this late hour, but he froze in his tracks when he saw what you were actually doing. Yoongi would raise his eyebrows in surprise, watching you intently. Although he would never admit that he enjoyed the sight of your body moving to the beats of Blood Sweat & Tears, your boyfriend would stand there until the very end of the choreography. Once you notice him, he would comment that it's late and you two should go to sleep, but later he would tell you that you did a good job and that you should dance more often if you had fun doing it.

Jung Hoseok (J-Hope)

He would somehow find out from your friends that you liked dancing for fun and that you had practiced the choreographies to some of his songs and start to bother you again and again by asking you to dance for him. You would likely comply just to get some peace, but he would only get more excited by the thought of finally being able to see your body move to the music that he had helped to produce. However, as soon as you started to play the music to Blood Sweat & Tears, he would sit still in his chair and watch your every movement with awe. Halfway through the song, he would get up and join you on the dance floor which is your shared living room. Although he would do his best and dance as if he were on stage, a smile would be plastered on his face the entire time and he would look at you as much as he could without losing balance or focus. When the song is over, he would hug you, overwhelmed with joy. Once he knows about your dancing skills, he would want you to show him more dances and maybe even ask you to perform for the other boys so that they could see what an amazing human being you are.

Kim Namjoon (Rap Monster)

Dancing had never been Namjoon's greatest talent (although he tried hard), but he knew how to appreciate anyone who showed effort at mastering difficult movements and trying to match them with the rhythm of the music. Therefore, when your boyfriend decided to give you a surprise visit after a long fan meeting and caught you practicing the choreography of Blood Sweat & Tears in your tiny bedroom, Namjoon almost wanted to jump in the air because he was so excited to see you move to the song he had helped compose. But then he reasoned that it would be better to wait quietly and watch you until the end of the song. When you tried to catch your breath after finishing the choreography and finally noticed Namjoon, your boyfriend would clap his hands and tell you that you could become much better than him if you kept practicing your dancing. He would be so proud of you and ask you to show him more of your newly discovered talent.

Park Jimin You were inside Big Hit Entertainment, waiting for your boyfriend to finish recording when you heard music coming from the dance practice room. It was Blood Sweat & Tears playing, one of your favorite songs, and Jimin's mellifluous, sexy voice was the final kick to get you into dance mood. Thinking that nobody was around to see you, you walked into the empty practice room and gave in to the sounds of the music. Jimin just finished talking to Bang PD and passed by the dance studio when he saw someone very familiar on the dance floor. His eyes almost fell out of their sockets when he realized it was you and he simply stared at your seductively moving body. He never expected you to be into dancing, and he saw you in a new light of awe and admiration. When the chorus started playing, Jimin would come over and join you on the dance floor. Although you are a little startled and stopped moving for a second, your boyfriend would encourage you to go on and together you would dance until the end of the song (even though Jimin might change the choreography just a little and turn it into a sexy dance for two). 

Kim Taehyung (V)

Taehyung would be so excited to see you dance to his songs, and he would even beg you to perform one of the dances for him. Finally, after giving you his cutest puppy eyes and asking a thousand times, he successfully convinced you to dance to Blood Sweat & Tears, a difficult yet fun choreography. Taehyung would be beside himself with anticipation when you got ready and started to play the music. Sitting on the edge of a chair or leaning against the table, he would watch you with wide eyes and constantly whisper things like: "Wow, so cool... you can dance so well, Y/N." At the end of your performance, he would clap excitedly and shower you with honest words of praise. No matter how well you actually did, your boyfriend would adore you even more and brag to his Hyungs and Jungkook about your courage and skills.

Jeon Jungkook

He would catch you dance to Blood Sweat & Tears when you least expect it, for instance when you just want to have fun dancing and are certain that you are alone at home. He would watch you from a safe distance, making sure to not be noticed by you (in fact, it is not the first time watching you in secret). A cocky smile would be on his face the entire time, and only towards the end would he walk in casually and comment on your involuntary performance. Jungkook would poke fun at you for doing such a silly thing as dancing to his music, since you could never reach his level of dancing skills anyway. He would also comment on the small mistakes you did and challenge you to try again and do better by following his movements and instructions - you would basically get a free dance lesson, and Jungkook would enjoy teaching you the choreography a lot. Although he would mock you, he would also think that you are really cool for trying yourself at such a complicated choreography.

ANYWAY, red velvet is sm’s most recently girl group, debuted in 2014 with 4 members: irene, seulgi, wendy, and joy. in march 2015, they got a new member, yeri, which everyone was kinda confused about. she was super young at the time, like 16 i think, so maybe she was too young to debut in 2014? dunno. their concept is that they can do girly concepts (red) and more mature, r&b type concepts (velvet).
