We had a fabulous time visiting Batuu yesterday! Our outfits were comfortable and functional and well suited to what turned out to be a relatively cold and cloudy day in southern California. Disney cast members definitely seemed to interact with us more because we made the effort to dress up, and we got some lovely compliments from other guests, too. We were even gifted some BSO credit coins by random strangers who liked our outfits!

It was Jack's first visit to Batuu, and while I did get to spend a little bit of time there with my mom in October, this was my first opportunity to really explore the entire area, browse through the shops, and sample all the food and drinks available. It was at least as cool as my first impression of it back in October, and Jack was impressed and delighted by all of it. We spent a good portion of the day just admiring all the details and world-building and excellent sets.

Jack has requested no photos, but I did manage to snag this pic of him blocking the camera like a victim of the paparazzi, lol.

But look at those pleats! Both Jack and I are so pleased with how they turned out. Several of the Resistance jackets on display in the Rise of the Resistance queue had similar pleat details, and it was fun to look at them up close.

Over this last weekend and all the way up to late Monday night, I was able to add a few last details to our outfits. I finally adjusted the chain length of my dangley earrings and glued the leather cording wraps to the back of my kyber crystal necklace so that it wouldn't slip out. While I had the glue out, I figured I'd take a stab at making some spat-type things to cover the lacings of my tall Doc Marten boots. I was completely winging it from start to finish, but I'm really happy with how they turned out!

The spats are made from some left over suede I've had in my stash for literally more than 20 years now -- it's been used for an Aragorn vest for Jack, a couple of bags for me, and the inner layers of the big wedge shaped piece on my Oswin belt. And I still have some left over! Maybe I'll make myself a belt pouch to match these spats at some point in the future.

The narrow end of each spat tucks under the laces closest to the toe of my boot, and theoretically secures to itself with a hook and eye, though I found the hook didn't really hold from that angle, and really wasn't necessary anyway. The straps then velcro around the back of my leg, at the lowest point of the bend of my ankle, and right at the top of the boot, so that the strap sits just above the top edge of the boot in the back, which helps keep it from slipping down.

To make these I really just draped scrap suede on my boot while wearing it, started cutting it to the shape I thought might make sense, then copied that over for a second spat. I measured how much I would need for the straps and how much of an overlap I wanted for the velcro, then cut out all those pieces and glued them together using E6000 -- which works wonderful for adhering velcro to suede and suede to suede, but is a bit more iffy with the metal hooks and eyes (one eye popped off when I was taking off the spat at the end of the night, but since it wasn't staying hooked anyway, I'm not fussed).

Despite being such a quick off-the-cuff project, the spats worked out great, and added that last little bit to my outfit by covering the laces of my boots. They're visible in the third photo, the full-length shot in front of the door (and in the video below), and I think they add an understated bit of texture difference in all the black-on-black there, in addition to obscuring the modern look of the boots a bit.

Besides those detail bits for me, I also made a pair of little pockets for Jack's jacket, to hold 'code cylinders'. It's a tiny detail that really makes the jacket look that much more Star Wars-y, and the cylinders themselves are empty and their tops unscrew, so the space can actually be functional, too. (Currently they're filled with gum!)

And at Jack's request, I threw together a quick insert for the zipper section on his collar that used to hold the hood before we removed it. The hood was making the collar too puffy, but without it the collar didn't have enough body to stand up on its own.

I took some measurements, then cut a piece of cotton duck canvas (that I had originally bought to cover the zippers on my Moment vest, before I changed gears and made the Batuu vest instead) to the right length and about three times the height of the interior of the hood section. I did a simple zigzag tri-fold on the height, ironed it flat, and marked some guide lines perpendicular to the length. Then it was just a simple process of quilting the three layers together by machine sewing in short vertical rows ~1cm apart.

The quilting gave the canvas even more stiffness, and after that point it absolutely did not want to fold or droop along the short vertical axis. I slipped it into the former hood pocket (after snipping one corner to fit around the snap I hadn't accounted for), zipped it closed, and gave the whole collar area a quick pressing. It's removable if we ever need to, completely washable, and keeps the collar standing upright without looking too stiff. Jack was very happy with the result.

With our outfits finally done, we headed into the park around mid-morning, with a plan to stay late. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with Batuu Bounding at Disneyland (which is notoriously a bit more hit-and-miss than Batuu East, in Florida), but we got through security without incident and through the rest of the park without anyone commenting on our outfits. We saw someone else wearing the same leather-look leggings as me, and a guy wearing similar jacket and pants to Jack (but without the pleating), which made us feel like we didn't look too weird, by general Disneyland standards.

Once we were in Batuu, though, our bounding definitely got noticed more. A couple of fellow guests complemented our outfits (including the kind strangers who gave us the coins!), and cast members seemed way more interested in interacting with us in-character. I got to bring up a bit about the history I'd made up for Samæni Ray -- which led to one cast member later referring to me and Jack as "my friends from Denon!" All of the prep and character design made it a lot easier to think on my feet in those little improv interactions.

One cast member in particular kept finding us throughout the day, just suddenly appearing out of nowhere it felt like, and kept trying to sell us a speederbike that totally wasn't a broken down lemon.

Later in the day, he kind of sold us out to Kylo Ren and a pair of stormtroopers (but like, in a fun way, lol) which led to an intense interaction with Kylo Ren right up in both my face and Jack's. Kylo Ren is tall, and the voice and the mask and the body language was all perfect up close. There was a bit of nervous laughter on our part, but we kept our cool and convinced Ren that that since we'd only just arrived on Batuu from Denon, we couldn't possibly know anything about any Resistance activity in Black Spire Outpost.

We were way too in the moment to get any photos, but because we were dressed up and Kylo Ren was so much up in our faces, we did draw a bit of a crowd, so for all I know other people may have taken pictures or videos of the event, lol. My family has a saying about 'look hard' rather than take photos, and it was definitely that for us.

Overall the whole day was wonderful, and we ended up spending nearly 12 hours in Batuu without leaving once. I got to pilot the Falcon multiple times (though I can't really say I've gotten any better at it, lol), and got to try out gunner and engineer, too. We managed to ride Rise of the Resistance both during the day and again after dark, explore every part of Black Spire Outpost in detail, learn to play Sabacc with a cast member, have drinks at Oga's, and eat a bunch of really tasty, really well-presented food.

All together it was an excellent, excellent birthday. And we're already talking about when we might want to go back again.

He was set on not riding any of the attractions so he told Yuuta he'd be waiting instead while they stood in line and waited and waited and waited and then the moment both he and Rei got the safety bar lowered on them, it started pouring down like crazy lol ☔☔️

Hiroki is not the type to ride any of the attractions anyway, not just rollercoasters ❌️🎢❌️ And they only had a short time before rehearsals and all the attractions had like a 20 minute line (The spinning coffee cups are enough for him)

Again, he's wearing his zigzag headband ✨️ He just got home from rehearsals

His sideburns are looking fierce (also I feel like he's gotten a tan on his forehead and I can't unsee it)

The weather was hot but he feels it's still hotter in Tokyo. Besides, it was very windy around Fuji and they had rain the first day

There were lots of bugs but nothing crazy, lots of dragonflies

He still thinks about the drama surrounding it til this day 💔 He won't make statements but sometimes he wants to just let it all out 🥺

It's not a matter of having an agency, he knew it was gonna be difficult to go freelance already

He used to be obsessed with gorgonzola back in the day, he has recently gotten into eating it again (but he can't have it without honey)

Overall, he's been having alot of melon, peach and pear recently (shine muscat grapes are too expensive) 🍈🍑🍐

He also likes persimmons

Then again, he doesn't like the sourness of some peaches, and the pit is hard to remove

His hakama did indeed almost slide off during senshuuraku because he was hurrying up the stairs, he wasn't cautions enough with the hakama - they fixed it with magic tape/velcro though

He thought he had ripped it but he hadn't

He did stumble a few times off-stage

Benimaru wears two layered hakama anyways so he thinks it would be fine even if it ripped

Benimaru's outfits were super easy to move around in

Although the footwear were really difficult; he's more used to wearing tabi, so wearing setta (leather soled sandals) was a challenge (jumping was especially difficult)

Some suggested he'd wear rubber soles but it would just get flappy

He forgets what the second toe is called and calls it the ring toe

His toes would clench the setta straps 💢 but it would tingle like it was forming a bruise

Again, he's relishing in how easy it was to wear the overall outfit

At any rate, he finds heels super difficult to wear, particularly as Masaferry and his knee-high boots (they were sexy tho) - that might have been his most difficult one to wear when it comes to footwear

Shoutout to all the ladies who know the pain when the arch of the foot/shoe is rly narrow making it unstable

Shinonome was also difficult in terms of foot strain (the comments point out how he had to change footwear during the performance of Rusted Armor, idk if it was during the 1st or 2nd run)

He's contemplating whether it's more difficult to wear platform sandals or not

≫ Suehirogari:

Akashi is gonna be running this time!

He starts talking about the layout of the stage before realizing in the chat that it hasn't actually been officially announced yet lol (fans have sort of figured it out nevertheless)

The stage wasn't as big as he expected

Definitely bring a raincoat and towel in case of bad weather + lots of water

He's done numerous live shows indoors already but being outdoors may bring a whole new set of difficult situation

The seats are really close to the stage but it's quite wide instead (unlike Yoyogi Gymnasium and Saitama Super Arena), however it's all same ground level

He thinks it's because he joined rehearsals halfway through, his number of appearances might have decreased, but there's gonna be alot of songs with everyone in it (me: *praying it's not gonna be like Tori in SRS22 Fukuoka/Hiroshima/2nd half of Tokyo and he was off-stage for a good 50 minutes 😭*)

He apologizes due to the various circumstances that he probably won't be on stage much and seems to blame himself for it 🥺

≫ Tensura and Suehirogari:

Someone mentions the Oni zap in the chat, it seems to have been part of the adlib scene in one of the Tensura performances (8.13 matinée; they had only done it once previously during rehearsals), they had way too fun with the adlibs, to the point they didn't even have to speak with one another

You can tell Hiroki rly likes both Ryo and Hagino, the three of them kept chattering away backstage

They wanted to do the adlib scene (w/ Benimaru, Souei, Hakurou) because it gave a glimpse into the everyday life of the Ogre clan, they wanted to show the warmth and bond they shared as a family, but scenes like that had to be condensed and kept getting cut down

He doesn't know who came up with the adlib idea but they kept it real each time because that's what it's like to be around family

He thinks it's super fun to do adlibs with the help of everyone, after all you can't do adlibs by yourself

It's the same with Toumyu adlib although there's more regulations and it has to be ever more condensed (probably considering how many they are by now)

That being said, he's not saying there weren't restrictions to Tensura but, he just wanted to try to convey what he felt like for the character

There might just be someone who breaks the adlib restrictions in upcoming Toumyu performances, it's gonna be hilarious (a few guesses in the chat it's gonna be Onimaru or Ichi-nii). It's gonna be something that they create together with the audience? (Like a call and response-type of thing??)

He hasn't been getting involved with the new swords at all (might be because he joined halfway through)

He thinks Rei is serious and hardworking, he doesn't understand how he's actually younger (Hiroki is 1 year older), he's always rehearsing, he's very conscious of hierarchical relationships and is very polite (speaking keigo)

But they're always being silly together lol

He really wanted Hiroki to go on the attraction but he stopped before even queuing up. Rui Kihara (Heshikiri Hasebe's actor) went on the ride too

He makes a comment about another Kihara (Minoru) who's a weather forecaster and disaster prevention officer together with the mascot Sorajiro (it's a well known evening weather programme broadcasted in Tokyo)

He and Rui has been talking alot lately

It's only been a few days since he joined rehearsals so there's lots of ppl he haven't talked to yet. He's shy around new people and have been told he's difficult to get to talk so he's been trying to reach out to them himself. He's often told that as soon as he gets talking, their impression of him changes

"Sake suki?" ww (if he'd said no, that would've been the end to the conversation lbr)

He feels like he's gotten closer to Ryouga and Nakata since last year

He invited Tori to come when they went to the izakaya but got rejected cuz he was sleeping lol

He's only seen Daigo once at rehearsals so far but he's nice

He thinks he's contradicting himself because he wasn't very polite when he was younger. He talks about how "back in my days", you addressed your senpai by using the -san suffix (This part of the stream was kinda confusing to me since I'm rly not into Johnny & Associates and their manners regarding the -san/-kun debate for senpai/kouhai)

Even he himself would've been pissed off if someone instantly called him by -kun back then

He thinks it's about 50/50 who calls him -san/kun atm; Ryousei says -kun, Sasamori Hiroki says Nakada-san (but that's probably since they're both Hiroki lol), the other Hirokis call him Hiroki-kun though, Seiichiro probably calls him -san

Seiichiro taught both him and Nobunaga when they were trying to copy and rehearse the dances, apparently he was Nobunaga's caretaker of the day

Nobunaga recorded their dance rehearsal (looking at it from a bird's-eye perspective helps him notice things)

There aren't that many people around his age so he was happy when there was someone for once who was older (Hagino? Haru-chan?)

He saw quite a few of the uchiwa at Tensura (not so much on the second floor though because it was too high up)! If he had more time, he thinks he would have been able to see all of them

Since both Souei and Rimuru's penlight were blue, he felt a bit lonely having the red ones, but seeing the red scattered all around the audience made him feel very happy, supported and encouraged ❤️

It became a good memory for him so he'd be glad if we felt the same

I will answer your inqury on what I was going for for their clothes! At least as to what I was trying to inspire their outfits off of.

So first up the Orange's outfit 'moodboard':

There's one more outfit I want in consideration for this but I'll explain in it a second. So! I really think Orange might like to wear the sort of jacket thing Yuki's got on there, and while I opted out of the choker for him I do think he'd wear multiple necklaces. As for Citron's outfit there, I like the belt.

Also, those large gold bracelets seem to be mandatory and possibly a while jumpsuit of sorts. The owl earrings I legit just found right now(or well last night because I did fall asleep writing lol) to give an idea of what his earring might look like when I finalize it and pick out an Owl for it. I'm not sure if he always had an Owl earring or not but if he didn't that's fine because then it could be his little piece of abroad that he keeps with him, but if he did that's also fine because it's a sliver of his interests and personality shining through.

There was one more outfit I wanted here but oh well you don't need an image. It was the one with flowers on it. I think if Orange is allowed to wear some with more designs than what we've seen Citron and Tangerine in, it'd have flowers on it. Why? Well after all he's a nature boy. I know because they[/the company] telepathically told me when I was trying to draw him.

So here we go. I like the collar on Sakyo's outfit. Then I think Navel would have a visible choker like Citron does(tho tbh in my head it looks more like Yuki's but to avoid confusion I didn't put Yuki in this set.) There's the flowy part of the outfit & I'm leaning towards how Sakuya's is but Idk for sure, I kinda also really like the whole shoulder section of Sakyo's outfit so Idunno. He probably definitely has the stars though like Sakuya does. (As you can see I'm less sure on this outfit lol.)

Anyway, longer hair seems to be a trend for the royal family and Citron only sometimes wears a ponytail. SO why not let Navel have a ponytail? I think that Navel would try to differentiate himself from Orange in some ways since they're always together and so close in age(confirmed in my heart) and so a ponytail is a good start and easy to do.

I know that these ponytail cuff things exist. While looking up pictures for these, I learned that a lot of them have elastics in them? I didn't know they did? But regardless, I think that Navel should have one. Maybe without the elastic like the rhinestone one, but be bigger and more solid like the second one.
