love this poem but i don't really like this translation? here's mine:
夜雨寄北
sent north on a rainy night:
君问归期未有期，
you ask me when i'll return, but i can't tell you when it'll be
巴山夜雨涨秋池。
on ba mountain, the night rains fill the autumn pools.
何当共剪西窗烛，
when will we be able to trim the candle together by the west window
却话巴山夜雨时
and talk together about the night rains on ba mountain?

#i just think rexroth's translation is lacking the sense of longing and absence that the original has...#like the translation believes that its subject will be able to return one day. but i think the original poem does not.#ugh. like even titling it ''when will i be home'' as opposed to the actual title (''sent north on a rainy night'') loses so much#if you are going to try to translate classical chinese poetry you at least need to read james j.y. liu like. come on#also fwiw the ''you'' pronoun used is one implying that the poet is speaking someone of a similar or higher social standing#and thus not some broad#like nearly all great chinese poetry this is about guys being dudes#anyway sorry op nothing on you... thank you for sharing li shangyin's poetry :')#my translations
