not to get meta about my own lyrics but that specific line being brought up makes me really excited because i don’t always get to explain the more significant word choices and i’m still proud of some of them! so i’m actually gonna explain that one verse quick, it’s one of my favorites.

distantly, familiar hope came to me, that even with blood in our teeth my son stayed asleep

essentially: the hope that his son sleeps through the sound of blood in their mouths - both of them - is familiar. something he’s hoped before.

so, like, you know when you’re a new parent and you want to keep all intimacy quiet so you don’t wake the baby except intimacy to you is literally laced with blood at all times, and so when your wife is actually stabbing you in the chest with garden shears, your first thought is the same exact one you have every time you've kissed her since there was suddenly a child in the room down the hall?
