Part Four

Enter Peeta Mellark.
_____
Rent Control
Epilogue: One Year Later
âRue, I want the buffet to go here.â Katniss pointed to the back of the space, adjacent to the living wall. âPresents will go on the round table that weâre setting up at the entrance. The table linens are coming with Annie and FinnickâI found them at this awesome vintage shop in Oakland. Theyâll be great if we ever decide to have any other special eventsâŚâ She turned to the young girl. âAnything else that Iâm missing?â
Rue chuckled as she ticked things off the iPad she carried in her hands.
âHow about breathing? Seems like you missed it during that entire conversation.â
âVery funny, smartass,â Katniss retorted though she smiled fondly at the girl. âSometimes I wonder why Peeta and I hired you.â
âBecause I am the S-H-I-TâŚand because I can make a kickass Kouign-amann,â Rue replied, her grin just as affectionate towards Katniss.
Katniss nodded. âTrue.â She took a deep breath. âI just want everything to be perfect tomorrow for them. Theyâve waited for so longâŚâ
âItâs going to be great,â Rue assured her. âNow, you need to relaxâŚhave you even eaten?â
âNo, just been busy and it escaped my mind.â Katniss sighed. âI could go for a cheese bun.â
Rue scrunched her nose. âOh Godâis that what you and Peeta call it now?â
âNo, sheâs actually really into my buns.â
Peeta appeared before them with a tray in his hand. Pressing a quick kiss to Katnissâ lips and placing the tray on an empty table, he presented her with a cheese bun which she took and began to eat with relish.
âI do love Peetaâs bunsâŚâ She winked at the man before her, cheeks full of food. âAmong other things.â
Rue rolled her eyes at them. âYou two disgust me. Go get a roomâor an alley.â
âNow why would we do that when have those awesome mirrors Johanna gifted us in the back?â Peeta said with a smirk.
âI thought you said those were there so we could all keep an eye on each other in the kitchen!â Rue exclaimed. âNow I will never be able to make anything in there!â
âSo, weâll see you tomorrow?â Katniss asked, finishing off the rest of the bun as she wrapped an arm around Peetaâs waist.
âYeahâŚbut only because I really like cake!â Rue told them as she gathered her things off the counter next to her. âAnd, Annieâs potato salad!â
In a huff, the girl marched through the revolving door going to the back of the building.
Peeta and Katniss looked to one another, identical grins on their faces. Hand in hand, they went to the front where a long communal table stood and Peeta helped Katniss step onto the adjoining bench to sit on the wood surface before joining her.
When they were settled, they turned to one another.
âHappy Anniversary,â Peeta told her.
Katniss smiled and took his hand. âHappy Anniversary.â
Together, they turned to look out the front window of the Mellark Bakery, content in the moment and with one another.
++++++
âYou wonât even tell me?â Katniss asked as she followed Peeta out of the kitchen.
âNo,â he responded firmly as he went to the buffet table. Taking the piping bag, Peeta examined the three-tier cake before going to the middle tier and adding another perfect white frosting flower. âYou also made me promise not to tell you.â
âYouâre mean!â she responded petulantly. âSee if I ever go down on you again.â
âGross.â
Annie and Finnick, along with the rest of their brood, entered the bakery. Jackânow fourâimmediately went to Peeta to show him the PokĂŠball that he had in his grasp. Sarah and Rose dispersed to run around the bakery to which Finnick managed to wrangle one of the twins.
âRose, we donât run around Uncle Peetaâs bakery!â he told the girl in his arms.
âSarah!â the one-year-old replied.
âOopsâsorry, kid,â her father replied sheepishly.
âI am so glad that we decided on that vasectomy,â Annie said as she went to hug Katniss. âAlsoâreally gross. Why were you talking about âgoing down?ââ
âPeeta wonât tell me,â Katniss informed her.
âYeah, well thatâs why weâre having this shindigââ her friend said as she placed the large bowl on the buffet table. ââso we can all find out as a family.â
âActuallyâŚâ The tips of Finnickâs ears went red. âPeeta kind of told me already.â
Annieâs brows furrowed at her husband. âWellâŚno head for you, either!â
âAre we interrupting something?â
Beetee stepped into the bakery along with Wiress, bright smiles on their faces.
âNo, just some marital corporal punishment,â Peeta told the couple. âSpeaking of whichâcongratulations on the engagement!â He placed a kiss on Wiressâ cheek before shaking Beeteeâs hand. âSantorini must have been good for you.â
âAnd, check out that rock!â Katniss said after embracing Wiress.
âBeetee knew how I felt about diamonds,â Wiress explained with a gentle smile. âSo, he came up with this lovely thingâŚand I couldnât be more thrilled.â
âIt originates from the 1920âs,â Beetee said as they stared at the ring. âThe ruby is still in great shape and that design for the settingâthey donât make them like this anymore.â
âWowâŚâ Katniss was impressed; the ring was a work of art with its intricate carvings and a setting made to look like the ruby was the center of a golden-petaled flower.
Her gaze went from the ring to meet Peeta and she found him staring at her, a strange expression in his eyes.
Katniss could usually read him like a bookâbut this look was different.
âHello! Hello!â
Everyone cheered as the celebrant entered the bakery.
Effie was glowing.
In the voluminous emerald dress, she looked like Mother Earth herself.
Well, her belly was about as round as the earth.
Haymitch followed, looking perfectly respectable in a dress shirt and slacks, his dark hair tied back.
Taking a deep breath, she looked to Peeta whose gaze went tender as he reached for her.
Together, they went to greet the soon-to-be parents.
++++++
âYou two did really well,â Daphne said to Katniss and Peeta as she looked at the buffet table approvingly.
It was a great array of food; Annieâs potato salad and fried chickenâsignatures from her restaurant, empanadas from a nearby Spanish restaurant, fresh salads created by Katnissâ mother, and Peetaâs three-tier cake with the âHey Baby!â topper made by Prim, who was a master calligrapher.
âWeâre actually going to be partnering with Annieâs restaurant to create a new lunch dish,â Peeta said, his arm around Katniss. âKatniss thought about it. My brioche buns with Annieâs fried chicken. Robin taught Katniss how to make her slaw, so theyâre pairing it with that. Should debut by the end of the month.â
âPerfect,â his mother replied. âIâll have your father update the website to announce it.â
âIâll take a picture when itâs out for our Instagram,â Katniss offered.
His mother beamed at Katniss. âYou found yourself a good partner.â
âDonât I know it,â Peeta agreed.
âOh! Thereâs your mother,â Daphne told Katniss. âWe went to Manhattan for a girlsâ night and ended up backstage at Hamilton! Can you believe it? Iâm going to see if she brought the pictures!â
With that, she rushed over to Katnissâ mother and the two hugged excitedly before they began to peruse Robinâs iPhone.
âThatâs so creepy,â Katniss said.
Peeta grinned at her. âWhat? The fact that they had a girlsâ night and are so far from that? Or that whenever they are with each other they become teenagers?â
âI donât knowâŚI didnât think that theyâd be so closeâŚafter everything,â she admitted.
Katniss looked around at the crowd of people who had come to Effie and Haymitchâs Baby Shower and Gender Revealâthe motif was a sage (and neutral) green.
A lot had changed; she was no longer at Johannaâs, instead becoming the designer for the bakery. Peeta had convinced her that it would be great for her portfolio. Together, they had come up with a cohesive design that gave the bakery its homey yet eclectic vibe. There was soft wood and greenery everywhere; there was no disposable ware, only large, thick mugs and glazed platesâvery hygge.
Eventually, Katniss had transitioned into Business Manager to do the hiring. Rue was a recent graduate from the San Francisco Culinary Institute, and she couldnât come more highly recommended as a candidate for Assistant Baker. She was creative and kind, eager to learn, and they took to her immediately. She hired a few more people for front-of-house including Finch, Rueâs roommate and Thresh, who decided to follow Peeta after he quit the coffee shop.
Johanna, who was currently chatting up one of the Haymitchâs co-workers, a tall drink of water with thick-framed glasses, encouraged her to spread her wings. Prim, bored with the East Coast and longing for adventure, took Katnissâ place at the boutique and was living in the Mission District above a bar that she occasionally bartended for.
Katnissâ gaze drifted to Effie and Haymitch. Her landlords looked jubilant; Effie caressing the bump that had surprised all of them seven months ago.
The Abernathys were celebrating their anniversary at the time. Everyone had joined them for dinner in the apartmentâs backyard. Wine bottles were opened, some questionable things were smokedâŚand by morning, the Abernathys were found under their lemon tree, covered in a picnic blanket and wearing nothing under it.
A few weeks after that, Katniss and Peeta had their grand opening.
It had gone perfectlyâuntil Effie vomited at their front entrance.
They assured her that she was âchristeningâ their new business when, in actuality, a little peanut was currently lounging in her uterus.
It had happenedâthe long-awaited Abernathy child had come.
âI think itâs time for them to do the reveal,â Peeta said into Katnissâ ear.
She nodded in agreement. âEveryoneâs had their fill. Iâll let Rue know to grab the cake knife in the back.â
Peeta went to the couple to lead them over to the cake that would tell them their babyâs gender.
He winked at her before guiding Haymitch and Effie away.
Then, there were herself and Peeta.
Financially and in their work lives, they were doing great.
However, after their pretend nuptials, they had gone into a standstill. They were perfectly content for a while, unmarried and living in sin.
Lately, however, she had felt a longing.
And, as Katniss looked around at their family and friends, moving along in their personal lives, she realized that she wanted more.
She wanted them to be real.
Katniss wanted to get married.
++++++
âBefore our soon-to-be parents cut the cake, does anyone have guesses on the gender?â Stephen called out to the crowd.
Everyone had gathered around the cake table excitedly waiting for the cake to be cut. His mother and Robin were already taking photos on their phones of the couple as Threshâa budding photographertook a few shots on his old Canon. Prim was quietly taking bets; the pool was already in the mid-hundreds, and the bets went from how much Baby Abernathy would weigh to how long into labor would Effie finally snap at Haymitch for impregnating her.
âIâm pretty sure, girl or boy, itâs going to be a dick,â Peetaâs father responded with a smirk.
âChristopher!â Effie put her hands to the sides of her belly. âNot in front of my baby!â
Haymitch guffawed. âHeâs got a point there. No matter what gender, he or she is coming out with a set of balls and a penchant for rebellion.â
âWell, youâre as ready as youâll ever be,â Beetee assured them good-naturedly. âSo, come onâjust do it already!â
âThatâs what Effie said,â Finnick cackled.
Effie looked to Jack. âCover your eyes, sweetheart.â
The little boy followed instructions and Effie immediately flipped Finnick the bird.
âI thought you said no cursing,â Finnick retorted.
âI wasnât speaking, I was gesturing,â Effie said testily. She whipped over to her husband. âNow give me the knife.â
âNo, I think Iâll keep any weaponry for now, sweetheart,â Haymitch said.
Together, they turned to the cake, and Haymitch quickly cut into it revealing the bright blue of the delicate sponge.
There was a collective scream as everyone rushed forward to congratulate the couple.
Peeta and Katniss hung back, content to watch the jubilee by one of the posts of the bakery. His girlfriend leaned back against him and he wrapped his arms around Katnissâ waist.
âYou happy?â Peeta whispered into her ear.
âOh yeah,â Katniss mused. âHow could we not be happy about a little Haymitch in the world?â
âYou know that kid is going to be all Effie,â he responded. âShe is going to spoil the shit out of him!â
âTrue, but they deserve to,â his girlfriend said. âThey waited for so long.â
Peeta looked around; their world was changing rapidly. Almost two years ago, Katniss was just the pretty girl from a boutique who he low-key had a crush onâand fantasized about during cold San Francisco nights.
Now, they were running a business together, living together, and just falling more for each other as time wore on. Peeta couldnât even remember a time when he wasnât waking up next to her gorgeous face. He didnât want to imagine it.
He had always wanted Katniss in his lifeâand Peeta hoped that she wanted the same.
Because locked in his desk in the back was a ring.
Beetee wasnât the only one who went vintage.
++++++
âYou are stressing out, sis,â Prim remarked.
âI know, I knowâŚâ Katniss admitted as they walked around the CityTarget. âIâve been so busy with the bakery that I havenât had time to buy stuff for the apartment. We ran out of toilet paper last nightâand it was during a time when one of us was prairie dogging.â
âEgads!â They reached the aisle with the toilet paper and Prim threw in several value packs into the cart. âTake as much as you can! Geez, youâre making co-habitation real appealing.â
âYou lived with me for years,â Katniss retorted.
âWell, I was a kid for a majority of itâI didnât know any better,â Prim said with a grin. âReally though, you seem kind ofâŚnot-so-fresh looking.â
âIâve been feeling not-so-fresh.â Katniss pushed the cart towards the health aisle. The bakery needed more bandages for the first aid kit. âNow that the baby shower is over, I thought Iâd feel better, but Iâm not.â
Prim peered at her. âYou getting sick? Peeta holding out on you?â
âIâm fine,â Katniss insisted though she yawned. âAnd, Peeta never holds out, especially since Iâve been super into him lately.â
Her sister raised an interested brow. âExplain.â
âLike for the last week, Iâve been obsessed with hisâŚscent,â Katniss told her as she grabbed a value pack of bandages. âLiterally, I wanted to lick the sweat off of him.â
âYou freak nasty!â Prim bounced next to her. âIâm so proud.â
âSo, thatâs not weird?â Katniss asked, continuing down the aisle as she looked at the list on her phone.
âWell, we all have fluctuating hormones during our cycles,â Prim informed her.
âHmm.â Katniss checked off the bandages, her next destination was dental floss.
She stopped, her brain connecting every symptom she had been experiencing into one realization.
Her eyes darted to the display in front of her.
Pregnancy testsâand they were all on sale.
Prim looked to her then to the display then to her sister once more. âOhhâŚshit.â
Katniss could only agree to the sentiment.
++++++
âHow long do these things usually take?â Katniss asked as she sat on one of the couches in Johannaâs boutique.
âPretty quickly,â Johanna said as she looked at the three sticks assembled on the counter. âThey all say âPregnant.ââ
Katniss shot up and rushed over, her eyes bulging as she looked at the three identical tests. âNo.â
âThat explains the whole sweat obsession,â Prim said.
Johanna looked to Prim. âDo I want to know?â
âNot really,â she replied. Prim put a hand over Katnissâ trembling one. âSoâŚare we happy?â
Katniss took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment to just regroup.
She had always wanted children. Yes, it wasnât expected and it was pretty early in the relationship; they were practically infants when it came to the relationship game in comparison to everyone around them.
However, Katniss couldnât imagine having children with anyone but Peeta. She could see him with their child, teaching him or her to bake bread. Other images of their life with their little bun flashed in her mindâŚwalks through Golden Gate Park, picking out the best ingredients for the bakery at Farmersâ Markets, falling asleep on their cozy couch in front of the fireplace during ChristmasâŚ
Finally, Katniss opened her eyes.
âYes. Weâre happy,â she told her sister and Johanna.
Prim reached over to embrace her. âCongratulations!â
Johanna joined in, a wisp of a tear in her usually sharp eyes.
âHe or she is going to be the best dressed kid in San Francisco, thanks to Auntie Johanna!â
Prim pulled away to look at her sister. âSo, how are you going to tell Peeta?â
âI donât knowââ She gathered them back together. âJust keep hugging me!â
++++++
âThis is a bit of a surprise,â Robin remarked. Next to her, her husband flipped through a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle as his own father looked through an old copy of People that had been lying on their coffee table.
âI know!â his mother, who joined Robin on the lounger, added. âWe never get invited here!â
The door opened and Prim stepped in along with his brothers.
Peeta had told Katniss to expect Bran and Alex as they wanted to check out the bakery, having missed out on the grand opening.
âSorry! I get so confused at SFO!â Prim explained as she took of her coat and when to greet her parents and his own parents. âTook me forever to find the right terminal!â
Bran and Alex immediately tackled Peeta, sandwiching him before he could stop them.
âGuys!â he yelled. âYouâre here because I have something serious to talk about!â
âWe know,â Bran replied. âBut there is something important that needs to happen.â
Peeta shook his head. âNO.â
Alex smirked. âYes, little brotherâthe Mellark round-up.â
Together, Bran and Alex began to jump up and down.
âMellark! Mellark! Mellark!â
Then, if Peeta wasnât embarrassed enough, his mother and father joined in.
âMellark, Mellark, Mellark!â
His mom was getting incredible jumps despite being in the sharpest heels imaginable.
âWhat is going on here?â Effie had arrived, along with Haymitch, who was greeting Stephen and Robin. âDaphne, youâll destroy your Louboutins!â
âWhen there is a Mellark roundup, you must roundup,â his mother replied simply as she stepped away and rushed forward to hug Effie.
âAnnie and Finnick should be coming soon,â Effie told the group as she plopped down on the space that Robin made for her on the couch. Katnissâ mother helped put a pillow behind Effieâs lower back. Their landlord sighed in contentment. âYouâre a lifesaver, Robin. It takes me forever to get off our couchâŚâ
âWonât be much longer, Iâm sure,â Robin assured her.
âGood, because Iâm seriously done with this,â Effie said.
Finnick and Annie, along with Beetee, followed along a few minutes later. Wiress would be watching the Odair children who were all having their afternoon naps.
Once everyone was seated, Peeta settled himself in front of the group.
âFirst, thanks for coming,â he began. âIâve been thinking about this for a while and Iââ
âYou want to propose to Katniss,â Haymitch stated. âI mean, itâs not exactly brain science.â
The door clicked and Johanna rushed in. âSorry, Iâm late! What did I miss?â
âCaptain Obvious just stated the obvious,â Alex informed her with a wink. âOr in the simplest of terms, my baby brother is finally proposing to the woman who he was supposed to be married to a year ago.â
âOh.â Johanna looked to Prim, who shook her head. âThatâs greatâŚâ
Peeta immediately sensed something wrong in their expressions.
âWhat?â He took a gulping breath. âSheâs not ready, right? Or, maybe sheâs having second thoughts?â A sharp squeak escaped his throat. âI think Iâm might be hyperventilatingââ
âYouâre overreacting,â his mother said, interrupting his moment of panic. âIf you know Katniss like I know you do, you will know that she loves you.â
âAnd, that she wants more than anything to be with you forever,â Robin added, a tender smile on her face.
Stephen put his arm around his wife before looking to Peeta. âSo, what do you want us to do?â
âHelp me figure out how to propose to her,â he replied, his eyes going around the room. âEveryone in this room knows Katniss and me better than anybody else in the world. And, I just want this to beâŚperfect.â
âIt will be, because itâs coming from you,â Beetee said sincerely. âHowever, if weâre trying to get organized, we first have to establish when.â
âThatâs simple,â Stephen said. âKatnissâ birthday is in two weeks.â He looked around the room. âIt would be the perfect excuse if she asks why everyone is here.â
âHow about we all meet up again in like two days or something?â Annie suggested. âBefore then, letâs all come up with some ideas to talk about during the meet-up.â
Everyone agreed to her plan.
âPeeta, why donât we talk about Katnissâ likes and dislikes?â his father suggested. âMight help get everyoneâs minds going.â
âSure,â Peeta replied as he began to pace. âSheâs not big on loud functions or anything where sheâs in big crowdsâŚcanât stand artichokesâthinks theyâre wastefulâŚhates people who talk on those earbuds that arenât connected to anything.â He paused, smiling to himself. âShe loves sunsetsâŚcheese bunsâŚandââ
âYour penis?â Prim interrupted.
âPrimrose Everdeen!â Her mother scolded.
âCome on, mom,â Prim said. âWhat did you think they didâsleep side by side in spacesuits?â
âNo, but no need to be crude,â Robin admonished.
âSoâŚtwo days?â Johanna called out.
âTwo days!â everyone agreed.
+++++++
Prim grabbed Johannaâs arm as soon as they walked out of Katniss and Peetaâs apartment. Her parents and the Mellarks were already congregated at Haymitch and Effieâs for drinks before heading back to the rented home they were sharing while in the city.
âWhat the hell was that?â she asked her boss. âYou almost gave the news away!â
âIâm sorry, I didnât know I was coming into a meeting like that,â Johanna said. âI actually thought it had something to do with Katnissâ birthday.â She blew out a breath. âTheyâre going to have so much on their plate.â
âWell, itâs not our plate to worry about,â Prim told her firmly. âJust keep cool until Katniss figures out how to tell Peeta the news.â
âWhat news?â
They both jumped and turned to find Bran and Alex before them.
âNothing!â they chorused together.
âPlease.â Alex put an arm around Johanna. âHow can you resist a Mellark?â
She threw his arm off her shoulders. âVery easily.â
âCome on, sis,â Bran pleaded. âKatniss has news? Sheâs not really breaking up with him, is she?â
Prim snorted. âGet a grip, bro. My sister is so into to Peeta that she told meâjust a few days agoâshe literally wants to lick the sweat off him.â
âMore than I needed to hear,â Bran said.
âI want to hear more!â Alex responded. âJust more stuff I have on little brother.â
Prim walked towards the stairs, ignoring the Mellark brothers as they started a chorus of âPlease!â. She was never good with being pressured and had a penchant to snap.
Katniss was much more impenetrableâexcept when it came to Peeta, apparently.
âPlease leave it be! Katniss will tell Peeta about the baby when sheâs good and ready!â
Her eyes squeezed shut when she realized what she saidâSHIT!
The door of the Abernathy apartment opened slowly.
Taking a deep breath, Prim prepared herself for the onslaught of questions.
âFive, four, three, two, oneââ
Her mother responded first, tears thick in her voice. âYour sister is pregnant?â
Swiveling around, Prim saw the heads of her parents, the elder Mellarks, and the Abernathys sticking out of the apartment door. In front of her, Bran and Alex stood, their jaws hanging open to which Johanna tried to push Alexâs up.
She turned to respond to her mother.
âYes, Katniss is. No, I donât know how long. She went to an appointment to confirm it today. I donât know anything else. Above allâno one can tell Peeta!â
There was a collective nod and everyone stepped back so Haymitch could close the door.
With a wink at her, he closed it behind him.
âYou are not good at keeping secrets,â Alex concluded with a grin.
âI knowâŚâ Her hopefully-soon-to-be brother walked over and gave her a hug. âAt least Iâll be the babyâs favorite aunt. You and Bran can fight over whoâs favorite uncle.â
He pulled away. âNot fair! Bran can actually get the kid a pony! He has a fucking pony guy!â
Johanna quirked a brow at the eldest Mellark brother. âWhy would you need a pony guy?â
âWeâll worry about that later,â Bran said. âHow about us brand new Aunts and Uncles have a drink?â
With a tired nod, Prim allowed Bran to lead her down the stairs and to the closest bar.
++++++
Katniss sighed, allowing for just one second the feeling of contentment to flow through her.
There it was, six weeks and five days old; a peanut of a thing, really.
A peanut with a heartbeat.
Stepping off the lightrail train, she walked onto the street island and headed in the direction of the bakery. It was already closed for the day and Peeta was probably in the midst of closing paperwork. He was diligent about being there everyday to make sure that everything was tip-top. She loved that about him; his constancy in all things.
Peeta had promised his parents that Mellark Bakery would be a success on the West Coast. He had achieved it, putting a new spin on his parentsâ bakery, with gluten-free pastries and vegan-accessible food that broadened their customer base.
Getting her key out, Katniss unlocked the front door of the bakery and stepped in just as Thresh walked out from the back.
âHey Katniss,â he greeted her. âPeetaâs in the office.â
âThanks, Thresh,â she replied. âHow did it go today?â
âPretty run-of-the-mill, for a weekday,â Thresh informed her. âGreat morning rush, decent lunch, and then kids coming in with their parents after school.â
âMaybe we should have discounted pastries from 3:30-5:00ââ she mused. ââfor the kids and their parents. Great time to get rid of the current dayâs batch.â
âGreat idea, boss lady.â Thresh gathered his things from the counter. âIâm off but let Peeta know that I checked and weâre still good on almond flour.â
Locking up after Thresh, Katniss headed into the kitchen. She loved the smell of it; the flour, sugarâŚeven the scent of chocolateâthat must be the babyâs doing as she was not into the cocoa bean.
Here, she felt wrapped up in this beautiful life that she and Peeta created for themselves.
Would it still be wonderful with the three of them?
Pushing her thoughts aside, Katniss went to the open doorway of their office. Peeta sat with his back to her, his shoulders hunched and deep into the spreadsheet on the screen in front of him. Next to him, his phone rested, the rough voice of Tom Petty singing about Mary Jane on its speaker.
She knocked against the doorway.
âDid I ever tell you how sexy you look with a spreadsheet in front of you?â
Peeta met her eyes, his cheeks coloring. âProbably not as sexy as you look taking counter orders.â Swiveling his seat, he patted his lap. âWeâre low on chairs.â
Katniss obliged, primly sitting on his lap and wrapping her arms around his neck. âHello.â
âHi.â Peeta pressed a kiss to her lips. âHow are you doing today? You headed out pretty early. Everything okay?â
âIâm great,â she told him. âJust had an appointment.â
Here it was, the moment when she should tell him of their impending offspring.
Peeta yawned suddenly. âSorry, Iâm just exhausted. Itâs been a very long day for me. Did Thresh tell you whether or not the almond flour was okay?â
Suddenly, now was not the time to tell him especially when he was tired and processing spreadsheetsâ
âHe said the flour was fine.â A familiar tune wafted into the air and she abruptly stood up, holding her hand out. âYou want to dance?â
Peeta nodded, taking her hand and rising from their ergonomic and expensive office chair.
âThis song always makes me feel like Iâm in a 90âs romantic comedy,â she told him as The Cure filled the room.
Peeta met her eyes, his own crinkling in laughter. âArenât we?â
She chuckled and nodded, her head going to his shoulder.
âThe good kind, like Reality Bites or 10 Things I Hate About Youâwith witty dialogue and a kickass soundtrack.â
âWell, we have the witty dialogue,â Peeta told her. âJust need that soundtrackââ He stopped for a moment and looked into her eyes. âThereâs something different about you. You lookâŚsparkly.â
Katniss rolled her eyes. âReal witty.â She pulled him closer. âJust keep dancing.â
Her birthdayâit was coming up.
She would just tell him thenâand he couldnât say anything bad because it was her day.
Somewhere in her head, Katniss swore she heard the baby call her a chicken.
++++++
Two days later, the group gathered once more sans Beetee, who would be watching the Odair kids. He had already sent Peeta an ample outline of his suggestions that included recreating he and Katnissâ first date down to the dress she wore for it.
Katniss was at the bakery for evening inventory. Rue agreed to pretend she needed help to give them ample enough time to discuss their ideas.
âOkay, Annie and Finnickâwhat do you got?â Peeta asked, a clipboard and pen ready in his hands.
âWell, we thought it might be cute if the kids helped in some way,â Annie said, looking through her own list. âLike maybe Jack could hold the ring for you or the girls can give her flowersâŚâ She looked through the rest of her notes. âSorry guys. The girls are teething and Jack is going through a phase of just waving his little Jack around, if you know what I mean. Our ideas are not so good.â
âSo, your kid likes to be naked,â Johanna replied. âEveryone goes through a naked phase.â
âWhen did you get over yours?â Prim quipped.
âI havenât,â Johanna simply replied.
Peeta jotted down Annieâs suggestions.
âNo, theyâre fine. I take everything into account.â He looked around the room, stopping on the Abernathys. âHaymitch? Effie?â
âHow about you do something in the garden?â Effie said. âI mean, I can decorateââ
âYou mean I can decorate,â Haymitch interrupted. âThere is no way in hell that Iâm letting you on a ladder.â
âBut I have all the streamers from the baby shower and Katniss loves green!â his wife protested.
âBefore this turns into a fight that Haymitch wonât winââ his mother told them. ââPeeta, just note it and letâs keep going.â
âOkay then.â Peeta wrote down the suggestion before going to his mother and father. âMom? Dad?â
âWellââ His mother turned to look at Robin, who practically bounced in her seat. âWe thought that we could blow up some pictures of you and Katniss sequencing your relationship!â
âAnd then we could do like a few them of your future,â Robin added. âLike one of you two getting married and one of you and Katniss with your babyââ
Prim, who had been drinking a glass of water, suddenly coughed.
âM-Mom!â she sputtered; her blue eyes wide with shock at the possibility of her mother revealing Katnissâ secret. âThey donât even have kids!â
âOh pish.â Robin waved her hand easily. âNothing that canât be photoshopped.â
Peeta wrote down the suggestion. âThat sounds pretty cool. I mean kids seems a little farââ
âYou donât want to have kids with my Katniss?â Stephen suddenly asked.
Peetaâs head snapped up. âOf course, I do! Itâs justââ
His father suddenly towered over him. âJust what?â
A whimper suddenly escaped his mouth.
âI just thought that I would first like Katniss to accept my proposal before actually thinking about childrenâŚâ
Bran jumped up, his hands going to both fathersâ shoulders.
âChill, Dads.â He gave them pointed looks. âI mean, let them work that out when they get to that moment.â
âAnyway, before the parents decide to hijack your proposal, Bran and I came up with something,â Alex said. âWe think that you should do something musical for her.â
Peeta shook his head vehemently. He already knew where this was going.
âNo, bros.â
Prim scoffed. âYeah, like Peeta can sing!â
âYouâd be surprised,â Bran told her. âI mean, weââ
âStop!â Peeta jumped from his seat. âIâll put it into account butâŚâ
âYou know her favorite song, right?â Alex asked.
Peeta nodded, his cheeks burning. âOf course.â
Alex put an arm around his younger brother. âThen, just think about it.â
âFine,â Peeta told him begrudgingly. âBut Iâm not making promises.â
âJust make it romantic,â Johanna told him earnestly. âBecause in the end, Katniss is just like any other person; she enjoys a good romance once in a while.â
Peeta suddenly grinned, thinking of his conversation with Katniss the previous night as they danced in their small office. âA romantic comedyâŚâ
Then, it came to him.
++++++
This was hell.
Katniss put a cool washcloth to her forehead as she sat on the floor of her bathroom. Peeta had offered to stay home with her, but she assured him that it was just âfemale issues.â There was no need for him to miss out on work and Prim would check on her in the afternoon.
The moment he left, after promising to call at lunch, she immediately rushed into the bathroom to throw up the contents of her stomachâmaybe her stomach itselfâinto their toilet.
She didnât know how long she could take doing this, keeping this misery to herself.
Peeta got her into this. He should suffer, too.
âA few more daysâŚâ she told herself.
In a few more days, it would be her birthday and she could tell Peeta about their baby.
With that thought, Katniss laid down on the cool porcelain floor and fell asleep.
++++++
âSheâs a wreckâŚâ
Katniss blearily opened her eyes hearing her sisterâs voice.
âWhat did you expect?â a deep voice asked. âSheâs carrying my brotherâs spawn.â
A washcloth was placed on her forehead.
âJust let her rest. Sheâs stressed out, keeping all of this from your brother.â
Katniss was soothed at Johannaâs words.
âShould we get her to their bed?â asked Alex. âShe looks a little peaked.â
âIâm fine,â Katniss finally grumbled, her eyes opening to find Johanna, Prim, and Bran on the floor with her. Alex leaned against the doorframe. âIf you take me to the room, Iâll just end up here, anyway.â She glared up at Johanna. âI canât believe you told them.â
Johanna gave her a mock scowl. âMe? I didnât say anything. It was your brainless sister.â
Prim gave her a pout. âSorry, Katniss. You know I canât keep secrets.â
âIt wonât be a secret much longer,â she informed them. âIâm going to tell him on my birthday next week.â
âYour birthday?â Johanna repeated. âWhen did you decide that?â
âOnce I got the confirmation that there was a little peanut-sized being inside meâalso, when I chickened out on telling Peeta that same day,â Katniss replied and sighed. âWe can never get married now.â
âWhy not?â Alex asked.
âBecause once I tell your brother, he will propose to me. Not because he wants to, but because heâll feel obligated to. I donât want to trap him like that. I mean, we can raise the baby togetherââ
Bran reached over to give her shoulder a squeeze. âOh sweetie, my brother would never marry someone just because of obligation. Every move that Peeta makes, he makes with love.â
âI know.â Katniss sniffled. âDamn hormones. I just donât want him to regret meâŚor the peanut.â
âHe would never,â Alex assured her.
Katniss suddenly shot up, twisting in the direction of the toilet before retching into it.
The four other occupants reared back before Prim gathered herself to hold her sisterâs hair up.
âLet it out,â Prim told her soothingly.
âI think I just threw up a lung,â Katniss replied miserably. âHelp me up. I feel so gross. I need to change my shirt.â
Bran, the brawniest of them all, scooped the nauseous expectant mother up easily. âI got you.â
âThanks, broâŚâ Katniss closed her eyes. âYou smell like PeetaâŚbut Iâm not even turned on.â
He guffawed. âGee, thanks.â
Everyone else followed them down the hall to the bedroom and Bran gently placed Katniss on her bed.
âLet me grab you a shirt, sis,â Prim said quickly before going into their closet and returning with an oversized white t-shirt. âDo you need anything else?â
Katniss shook her head. âI have a bottle of water by the bedside. Iâm just going to lay down for a while. Peeta said he would call soon.â
Nodding, Prim went over to kiss the top of her sisterâs head. âGet some rest, okay?â
Katniss nodded before closing her eyes. She was out before Prim even closed the door.
As soon as the door was closed, Prim turned to the other three.
âFuck the plan. Peeta needs to propose like right now,â she informed them.
âAre you kidding?â Alex said.
âNo, Iâm not. Katniss is unpredictable and moodyâŚshe might tell him right when she wakes up for all we know. We have to beat her to the punch,â Prim told the three before looking to Bran. âText all of our parents. Johanna, alert the building. Once this is all done, then we go to Peeta. Agreed?â
They all agreed quietly, not wanting to awaken Katniss, before getting to their duties.
++++++
The door of the bakery had barely closed for the day before the group barreled in. Peeta and Katnissâ parents, and wellâthe whole damn building were suddenly standing right in front of him as he was putting pastries away.
âWhatâs going on?â Peeta demanded to know.
Prim stepped forward. âYou need to proposeânow.â
He froze, a half empty tray in his hands. âWhat?â
Johanna took the tray from his grasp so she could have one for herself.
âIf you donât, thereâs a chance that Katniss might say no,â
He looked at everyoneâs anxious expressions. âBut, the planâ"
âWe figured it out,â his father told him. âItâs all set up.â
âHow did you manage that?â Peeta asked.
âKatnissââŚfemale problems knocked her out cold,â Alex offered. âAt least, thatâs what Prim told me.â
âWe worked quickly and quietly,â Beetee assured him. âIt looks great.â
âButâŚthis wasnât how it was supposed to happen,â Peeta said in disappointment.
âPeeta.â Robin lifted his drooping chin. âWhen did anything between you and Katniss ever go as planned?â
Peeta looked into her eyesâKatnissâ almond eyesâbefore giving her a kiss on the cheek. Reaching into his pocket, he handed her a set of keys.
âWill you get the ring? Itâs in the bottom-left drawer of my desk in the small petty cash box.â His gaze went to his mother, her own eyes glittering with tears. âMy mom knows the combination.â
Then, Peeta turned to the rest of the group.
âLetâs do this.â
++++++
Blinking slowly, Katniss finally opened her eyes. She was relieved to find that her stomach was no longer rumbling. She carefully sat up, her gaze going to her side table where a note in Primâs writing laid on a packet of Saltines, saying âEat meâ.
Katniss opened the packet quickly and scarfed down the crackers while texting Prim to thank her. She was surprised to find that she had slept late into the afternoon.
Her phone dinged with a response. âAre you okay?â
She typed back, âIâm feeling much better.â
The next message came quickly: âJohanna and I are downstairs in the lobby. Come down and meet us! Also, can you wear that dress that you wore on your first date with Peeta? Effie was telling us about it the other day and Johanna is thinking of having it recreated exclusively for the boutique.â
Katniss swore that she had worn it at some point in front of Johanna but typed back in agreement, letting Prim know that she would be down in a few minutes.
Going to her closet, she pulled out the rust dress that she wore that first date. Without that date, she may have never run into Gale and he wouldnât have texted his mother like a little bitch.
However, if he didnât, then maybe her and Peeta might have still been living that lie.
In some ways, she should be thanking Galeâright after punching him in the nads.
Quickly, Katniss threw the dress on. She still fit in it nicely, her boobs filling the top a little better, but their little bun was still well hidden. After making sure that she didnât reek of vomit, Katniss made her way out of the apartment and down the stairs.
Stepping onto the main floor, she found Prim and Johanna missingâbut the door leading to the backyard was open. It wasnât uncommon to find a group of them congregating for a glass of wine or just to talk about their day.
She loved this about their building; it was a communityâa family.
As Katniss stepped into the backyard, her mouth fell open.
She didnât see Prim or Johanna but found something entirely different.
To both sides of the door were easels with blown-up photos of herself and Peeta. She continued down seeing that first photo at their City Hall âweddingâ to a photo of themselves in front of the Mellark Bakery on its grand opening. It was easy to piece together that they were all set up to show the sequence of their relationship.
However, the last two before the archway of the garden showed two images of what was supposed to be their future.
One was an actual wedding, their faces photoshoppedâmasterfullyâon a bride and groom in front of beautiful rose archway. The guests all happened to have the faces of their families and friends.
Then, there was the last one; the one of herselfâwith a very nice rack she might addâholding a baby in her arms. Photoshopped Peeta stood behind her, gazing adoringly at their little one.
Her hand reached to the little oneâs face and with a sigh, Katniss wondered who their actual little one would look like.
She moved forward, entering through the thick archway where she was greeted by Beetee and the Odair girls.
In front of her, a large white curtain going from one side of the yard to the other had been drawn up, keeping her from seeing what was behind it.
Katniss looked to her neighbor. âHey Beetee, whatâs going on?â
He smiled at her before reaching behind him and presenting her with a delicate daisy crown.
âThe girlsââ Beetee looked to Sarah and Rose, who giggled and bounced excitedly. ââand I were in charge of this lovely crown.â He placed it carefully on her head. âThe girls chose the flowers.â
Katniss looked to each twin. âThank you, Sarah. Thank you, Rose.â
Beetee held out his arm. âShall we?â
Tentatively, she took it. âIâm a little scared of what I might find behind that curtain.â
The man next to her chuckled as the little girls ran ahead.
âNow when has that ever stopped you from leaping forward?â he asked her, a softness in his dark eyes. They stood in front of the curtain and Beetee parted it with just enough space for her to walk through. âGo ahead.â
Taking a deep breath, Katniss stepped in.
The beginning strains of her favorite song came on and she let out a breath of shock at the sight.
Her family along with the Mellarks were there, all gathered to one side as the Abernathys, Odairs, as well as Beetee and Wiress stood to the other side. She walked down an aisle of rose petals gazing up at the streamers creating a beautiful sage-green big top.
Then, her eyes went to the stage in front of her. âHoly shitâŚâ
âI don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday, I don't care about you
It's Friday I'm in loveâŚâ
It was PeetaâŚon stageâŚsinging into the micâand why did she not know that he could sing?
Katniss felt her lips turn up in a grin when Peeta winked at her, his mouth against the mic.
 âSaturday, wait
And Sunday, always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...â
And, was that Bran on the drums behind himâŚand Alex on bass?
âI donât know if Peeta ever mentioned that he and his brothers had a band,â Daphne said suddenly next to her, blue eyes bright with mirth. âThey were quite the thing in our neighborhood.â
âI can imagine why,â she replied breathlessly, watching as Prim and Johanna sang back-up to Peetaâs lead vocals. âHeâs good.â
Daphne gave her a kiss on the cheek. âHe stopped singing for a long whileâuntil you came along. Now, he would only do this again for you.â She moved Katniss forward gently. âGo on, listen to his song.â
 âAlways take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday
I'm in loveâŚâ
Katniss didnât know if it was the baby or just her, but she could feel the butterflies flutter in her stomach as she walked towards to the stage.
Oh shitâher stomach lurched; it was neither her or the baby.
It was her stomach.
Katniss could feel the bile rushing up and she lifted her skirt with one hand and used the other hand to cover her mouth before rushing to the left side of the garden. The music stopped abruptly in a jangled mess as she reached the end and let the vomit erupt from her mouth.
She was barely aware as someone gathered her hair up as she continued to throw up into what looked like a set of begonias.
âOh GodâŚwhose flowers were these?â she choked out through tears and vomit.
âDonât worry about it,â Haymitch said off-handedly behind her. âThose tenants were huge douches.â
A cool hand went to her forehead. âAre you okay?â It was Peeta. She realized as she leaned back against his chest that he had been holding her hair. âI didnât think that it was humanly possible for someone to vomit that much in such a short span of time.â
Katniss closed her eyes, feeling the relief of being in his arms after such a trying day.
âI didnât know you had such good voice,â she breathed into his chest, exhaustion taking over.
âJust one of my many talents,â Peeta told her and she could hear the smile in his voice. âYou wanted romantic comedy, right? Donât all good romantic comedies come with a kickass soundtrack?â
She laughed wetly. âThey do, but they donât usually come with vomit.â
Peeta chuckled, his chest contracting as he let out a shaky breath.
âNo, they donât. Some of them do come with one of theseââ Peeta pressed his mouth to her ear and her skin tingled at the warmth of his breath against her ear. âKatniss Everdeen, will you marry meâfor real this time?â
Her eyes opened and Katniss sat up, her gray ones suddenly watering at his words.
âAre you only asking me because Iâm pregnant?â she managed to blurt out.
His eyes suddenly widened to a degree that could break world recordsâor cause a major headache.
âYouâre pregnant?â
âUncle Peeta?â Jack suddenly stood in front of them holding out a tiny red box. âYour mommy told me to give this to you.â
âThanks, Jack.â Peeta ruffled his unruly locks before the little boy went to join his family. He turned back to Katniss. âTake a look.â
Shakily, Katniss took the box and opened it. There laying inside was a beautiful pearl ring surrounded by small diamonds on a thin band.
There was no way in hell, with a ring like this, that he did not plan this proposal.
âThis is real.â She met Peetaâs eyes. âAre you okayâŚabout the baby?â
Katniss felt her chest swell as tears lined his deep-blue eyes and his mouth split into a grin.
âWeâre going to have baby,â he said thickly.
Peeta kissed her soundly, despite what Katniss was sure was the most rancid-flavored kiss.
But if that wasnât love, then she didnât know what was.
When they pulled apart, Katniss beamed at him.
âWeâre having a babyâŚand getting married as soon as I brush my teeth.â
Peeta helped her up and she adjusted her skirt, brushing bits of grass off.
âSweetheart, I donât think thatâs possible,â Peeta said. âWeâd have to wait until tomorrowââ
âActuallyââ Beetee approached them and handed Katniss a piece of paper. âSigned by the mayor herself.â
It was a marriage license, their names already on it with todayâs date as their official wedding date.
They both looked to Beetee and he shrugged. âI came prepared.â
++++++
Many months laterâŚ
âCome on, little mama.â Peeta rubbed the small of her back. âJust a bit longer.â
Katniss groaned as she trudged forward. âI am so sick of being pregnant.â
âReally?â He gave her a smile. âI couldnât even tell.â
âWhy did I marry you?â she asked, grinning at him.
âBecause Iâm adorably irresistible,â Peeta told her as they reached the front. âAnd, I have a hugeââ
âEgo,â Katniss finished for him. She pressed a kiss to his lips. âAnd your penis is not so bad.â
âBetter curb your tongue,â he warned. âOur daughter might come out with a sailorâs mouth.â
âHelp me up.â Holding Peetaâs hand, Katniss carefully stepped onto the bench and onto the flat surface of the table. The table creaked as she settled. âOh, that doesnât sound good.â
Peeta joined her quickly, pulling her close.
âWe canât stay here for too long. Haymitch and Effie are expecting us. Itâll be their first date night since Luke was born,â Peeta told her.
âI know. Effie told me sheâs been âachingâ for Haymitch.â Katniss blanched. âWhen she is really tired, she has no filter.â
âThat was more than I needed to hear,â Peeta replied. âI guess itâs better than hearing about Alex and Johanna.â His brother had finally worn down Katnissâ friend and was now happily shackled after being married by an Elvis Presley impersonator in Las Vegas. âI donât think my parents have forgiven them for eloping.â
âWell, theyâll forget once this one is born,â Katniss assured him, her hand on her swollen belly. She looked to Peeta. âDo you regret that we didnât have a big wedding either?â
âHell no!â he exclaimed. âI married you at sunset in front of our friends and family and it was actually officialââ
âAfter I vomited in the middle of your performance.â Katniss leaned back against him. âI canât believe I married the Nick Jonas of the Mellark brothers.â
He groaned. âPlease stop with the Jonas references.â
âOkayâŚbut when our daughter is sixteen, you can bet your ass that Iâm playing the recording for her,â she responded.
âDeal.â
They sat back, looking out the window of the Mellark Bakery, content in the silence of the moment.
The silence didnât last very long.
âOh crap.â Katniss turned to her husband. âHelp me up.â
He looked to her, used to her frequent trips to the bathroom and sudden need for pastries. âWhy?â
âBecause my water broke all over this table and it will cause water stains!â she burst out. âWe just finished paying it off!â
Peeta jumped off it immediately, almost breaking that perfect Grecian nose in the process.
âItâs time?â
Katniss nodded, a bright smile on her face. âItâs time.â
 ______________
I hope this sated your appetite. I wish I could go into each character and tell you what happened to each but that would be likeâŚten more pages. Iâd by happy to tell you via message on Tumblr.
For now, just know that Katniss delivered a healthy baby girlâand Peetaâs nose ended being broken, anyway. Next baby, heâll be sure to not suggest that Katniss hold off on the drugs eleven hours in.
Theyâre still deciding on a name having vetoed Primrose the Second and Johanna the Great.
Suggestions for names are appreciated as well as presents for the newest tenant of the building.
Just a few other notes:
-A kouign-amann is actually a really flaky cake but here in San Francisco, theyâre sold in a donut size so I think of them like cronut. Whatever it is, itâs flippinâ delicious.
-We have CityTargets in San Francisco, which are smaller versions of Target, and theyâre basically made for urbanites or if youâre by the one next to San Francisco State University, college students.
-The current mayor of San Francisco is London Breed, I figure sheâs still mayor in this timeline of the story.

Thank you for sticking around and reading!

Influenced by Stephen King and Rod Serling, Sean Seebach has written three books: A Looking in View, Autumn Dark and Our Monsters Are Real: The Pig Man. When Sean isnât writing or managing a wonderful barbecue joint with amazing people, he enjoys reading, cooking, and listening to rock nâ roll. He currently lives in Ohio with his wife, daughter, and son.
Please help me welcome Sean Seebach to Roadie NotesâŚâŚ..
 1. How old were you when you first wrote your first story? I was probably in elementary school. I created a comic book with some âcool dudeâ who just did âcool thingsâ. Cool things being riding a skateboard and hitting home runs, things like that. The first story was one called Blue Collar Diesel which I later named The Lake Shimmers. Itâs terrible. I wrote that when I was 34. So I took the title Blue Collar Diesel and wrote a novella that better suited the title. Itâs in my collection A Looking In View.
2. How many books have you written? I have written three books: Our Monster Are Real: The Pig Man, Autumn Dark, and A Looking In View.
3. Anything you wonât write about? Probably not. I tend to stick to what is called Quiet Horror. Nothing too graphic or obscene. Thatâs not really by choice. The story is the boss. I just try to transcribe whatâs happening in my head the best I can.
4. Tell me about you. Age (if you donât mind answering), married, kids, do you have another job etc⌠I was born in Lancaster, PA in 1980, moved to Columbus, OH around â82. It wasnât the best part of town, so I wasnât allowed to leave the yard. At the time it was a bummer. Later on I realized being confined to just the front and back yard forced me to use my imagination. I could do (and be) whatever I wanted: a spy, a ninja, a jungle warrior, whatever. Then in 1988 I moved to Lithopolis, Ohio, population around 600 people. There, I could explore the woods and creeks, ride my bike, and go to The Wagnalls Memorial Library, which still stands and became the cornerstone for my development as a reader. I did my first book signing there in May of this year. It was surreal. I am married to a wonderful wife who supports me in every aspect of life. We have a baby girl and a son who just turned 2. I work as a restaurant manager by day/night, depending on my work schedule. Next to writing, cooking and working with fun people is one of my favorite things to do. Iâm a very fortunate man.
5. Whatâs your favorite book you have written? I should probably say Autumn Dark. That book has gotten the best response from readers. But, in truth, because The Pig Man was the first it will always be special to me. I love the story, but it isnât written as well as the others. Which to me is a good thing because it shows that Iâm improving.
6. Who or what inspired you to write? I donât really know who or what inspired me to write. I think it chose me. I had a desire to write in my mid-20âs but I didnât have the courage to do it. I thought you were either hand-picked by God or were chosen by teachers at a young age. Maybe it was writer, director, screen writer, producer, and occasional actor Brian Koppelman. I found him on Twitter shortly after I gave up drinking three years ago. He had posted a series of Vines on his account. Vine was a service that featured 6 second video loops. Brian was giving people permission to create in the videos he made. I looked him up, saw his credentials (Rounders, Oceanâs 13, Solitary Man, among many others) and thought âNow, hereâs someone whoâs done amazing things and is telling people to go out and do it!â There are many videos and books out there that will say you must be some sort of special intellectual to be an artist. Those people are wrong and most are full of themselves, are bitter, and most havenât accomplished much. Brian had. Following him then led me to The Artistâs Way by Julia Cameron and The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. I was fortunate enough to have support in the beginning. Stephen King tweeted that he had a new story called A Death in The New Yorker and asked folks to comment on it. It was on their site and free to read. I thought, âOh boy, who has the balls to critique it?â So I scrolled through the Twitter comments. There I found someone shamelessly self-promoting herself with a story she wrote called Alive. I read it and loved it. That person was Meagan Smith who then wrote as M.J. Pack. I reached out to her and we became fast friends. Shortly after she was hired on at Thought Catalog, an online publishing magazine. She asked to read my stuff. I sent her a cannibalistic story called The Best I Ever Had. She liked it and wanted to publish it. That gave me the confidence to crank out more stories. Iâve been writing regularly ever since. I owe her a great deal. She was kind of enough to write the Foreword for Autumn Dark which Iâm very proud of. Iâd like to collaborate with her one day. Sheâs a fierce talent. Also, during that time, author Tom Callahan befriended me. I reached out to him after reading his wonderful story called The Soldier, The Dancer, and All That Glitters from Dark City Lights, an anthology put together by the great American crime fiction author Lawrence Block. Tom and I emailed back and forth a lot. He read my stuff and encouraged me to write, write, write! He gave me advice and recommended a slew of books about writing to read. I owe him a great deal. And I continue to find support to this day. Author Lincoln Cole and I have become close over the years and heâs helped me in many ways. From creating a website to building a mailing list to formatting my books for self-publishing to finding cover artist (and author) M.N. Arzu to promotional tactics. Heâs a good man and I also owe him a great deal. Just recently I did an interview with author Armand Rosamilia , also owner of Project Entertainment Network, for the Armcast Podcast. I also was invited in a flash fiction contest along with authors Stephen Kozeniewski, Gabino Iglesias, and Justin Bienvenue. Three big names in the horror community. Book reviewer David Spell has been in my corner since day one and I had the fortunate opportunity to meet him in Naperville, IL during Stephen and Owen Kingâs tour stop for Sleeping Beauties. And, now, this interview. Thank you, Becky! Iâd also like to mention that since Iâve begun listening (and advertising) on The Horror Show with Brian Keene, a podcast dedicated to the genre, Iâve met all kinds of great people: readers and authors alike. Itâs opened the door to many authors I was ignorant to before. Itâs also highly entertaining. But none of this would be happening without the support of my wife. Sheâs my first reader, my Annie Wilkes, and I still like to make her laugh and cringe, and when I do, I know I have something worth publishing.
7. What do you like to do for fun? Watch movies. This year has been great for them. IT, Geraldâs Game, The Dark Tower, Baby Driver, 68 Kill. Iâm really looking forward to seeing Iâm Dreaming of a White Doomsday by writer/director Mike Lombardo. The World Premiere is happening in Columbus, OH on October 20th at 2p.m. at Nightmares Film Festival. I also recently went on a hike with a close friend. No internet, no social media. Just us and nature. It was awesome to not only spend time with him, but to also disconnect from the world for a few hours. Itâs something weâll be doing regularly, weather permitting. I run on a regular basis. It keeps the head clear and helps me cope with stress. I also like to cook, try new recipes, and eat. All with balance. Dessert is okay if itâs not for breakfast. Sometimes. The most fun I truly have is building blanket forts, going to the park, and reading to my son. He likes flip books and monsters and dinosaurs. We read Harold and The Purple Crayon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Little Blue Truck⌠Watching him develop has been the ultimate high for me. I recently bought a stack of books off Mike Lombardo. YA horror, Goosebumps, Eerie Indiana, that sort of thing, for my kids when they get older. Maybe theyâll dig them like I did.
8. Any traditions you do when you finish a book? I go to Starbucks inside of the Barnes and Noble in the town over from me and get a piece of Red Velvet Cheesecake (they sell Cheesecake Factory cheesecake) and a coffee. Then I daydream that thousands of people will rejoice in being so entertained by something I created! Then I get nervous and think my writing is garbage then I publish it anyway and buy ad space on the Horror Show.
9. Where do you write? Quite or music? I write in my office in our basement at a desk. I used to write everywhere but I found in approaching writing like a part-time job its best for me to have a designated place to work. Like, Iâm clocking in for the day! Time to go downstairs and get busy. I do write to music. I have a writing playlist on Spotify with four composers: Chad Lawson (who creates music for the Lore podcast), Lena Natalia, Danny Elfman, and most recently, Jon Hopkins. Most of it is classical. I get too distracted when I write to music with lyrics. Thereâs a Twin Peaks playlist on Spotify that I sometimes put on as well.
10. Anything you would change about your writing? The only thing I would change about my writing is improving it. Early next year Iâll be attending the Borderlands Press Writerâs Bootcamp in Maryland. Iâm also reading How To Write Short by Roy Peter Clark. Once Iâm finished with The Dark Tower Series, Iâm going to start reading all the authors Iâve discovered from The Horror Show. One, for entertainment and, two, I think itâs good to read books by authors from different backgrounds. It gives the mind a new perspective on the world and offers a different voice, a different way to tell a story.
11. What is your dream? Famous writer? From a writing perspective, my dream is to become a full-time writer. As Brian Keene describes it, the main source of income. Now that Iâm 37, the dream is to live long days upon the Earth (Dark Tower reference) with my wife and for us to raise our children to be loving, caring, responsible adults who follow their passion. Famous writer? No. Keep the fame. But Iâll gladly accept huge royalty checks!
12. Where do you live? A small town in Ohio. Surprise!
13. Pets? One dog, Chloe. Sheâs a German Shepherd. We took her in after my mother-in-law passed on. Sheâs great with the kids and patient with us.
14. Whatâs your favorite thing about writing? Thereâs a moment when I transcend into a story. The more I write, the more that happens. Iâll go back and polish what I wrote the previous day, sometimes not remembering certain lines that I had written. Sometimes I find myself next to the characters, oblivious to my surroundings. Sounds crazy (maybe it is) but itâs true. Writing makes me feel alive, as clichĂŠ as that sounds. It enriches my life. Also, one of the most rewarding things about it is when someone reaches out to tell you much they appreciated something youâve created. Thatâs special. It doesnât happen often, but when it does, itâs very touching.
15. What is coming next for you? A book called An American Monster. I wonât get into details because itâs not finished. Iâm superstitious and if youâve read anything Iâve ever wrote then youâll know that I need all the luck I can get.
