#the other time that he shouts out other musicals in one of his musicals is Merrily#where the characters say that their musical will be as big as Funny Girl Hello Dolly and Fiddler on the Roof combined (all 1964 musicals)#at first i didn't catch the lyric and assumed Sondheim was shouting out his own works#alas not. then i thought he was shouting out his friends which is true enough#(Jule Styne worked on Funny Girl and worked with Sondheim on Gypsy)#but really the reason is those were the hits in 1964 while Sondheim's 1964 show 'anyone can whistle' was a jumbo flop#(at the time#obviously it's seen new life and appreciation as the world wakes up to the fact that sondheim is the goat)#(merrily was also a then-flop)#anyway I'm glad it only took a decade after Merrily to get another reasonable instance for him to shout out his own work#he deserves it#he's the goat
