the text is by Rainer Maria Rilke, from his novel The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, which I read in college. original German above and my (very) rough translation below. (full image description/transcription below the cut.)

I used to do a lot more writing by hand so it’s more uneven right now than it’s been in the past, and it really is an unholy mixture of printing and cursive (I cannot be consistent with how I write Ss - sometimes not even in the same word) but I like my handwriting!

Ich lerne sehen. Ich weiß nicht, woran es liegt, es geht alles tiefer in mich ein und bleibt nicht an der Stelle stehen, wo es sonst immer zu Ende war. Ich habe ein Inneres, von dem ich nicht wusste. Alles geht jetzt dorthin. Ich weiß nicht, was dort geschieht...

I am learning to see. I don't know what's causing it; everything goes deeper inside me and doesn't stay in the same place where it used to come to rest. I have an interior that I knew not of. Everything goes there now, and I don't know what happens there...
