the character in question is Anuli, the happiness clinging, takes pleasure in self-destructive behavior, believes fae's the villain of this story, tries to get faerself possessed so fae can 'rewrite faerself', filled with painful nostalgia and too many thoughts, houseplant fairy

Anuli has such a rhetoical device filled potetic style that makes every other thought like five paragraphs but it;s fine because I'm enjoying myself

Full offense but your writing style is for you and nobody else. Use the words you want to use; play with language, experiment, use said, use adverbs, use “unrealistic” writing patterns, slap words you don’t even know are words on the page. Language is a sandbox and you, as the author, are at liberty to shape it however you wish. Build castles. Build a hovel. Build a mountain on a mountain or make a tiny cottage on a hill. Whatever it is you want to do. Write.

I present to you. The wannabe biologist's inaccurate biology

(an assignment for art class where we had to draw a skeleton for something)

Listen I wanted everything to be biologically accurate once upon a time. The most I got is that dryads are somewhat coldblooded depending on the species. (Anuli is, Kamari is... well Magnolias have an interesting way of dealing with the cold, so fae goes into a loose sleep when it gets too cold.)

Otherwise they have an exoskeleton with a thin layer of flesh and fuzzy skin on top... which mean they would also shed their flesh as they grew?? And have molting periods? ...uhh see dryad biology is hard. I wanted them to be symbiotic protists at some point. They couulllddd be. Very advanced protists. that co-evolved with every plant to exist somehow except for ferns and spore-producing plants. Yes I could worldbuild a whole biologically accurate thing but I'd lose my sanity trying to.

It'd be fun though.

In ANuli's internal world the sun is an evil entity and I love that part of faer psyche a lot. (Fae's a fiddle leaf fig that hates direct sunlight and sooo do I. Mostly fae likes shade, overcast days, and everyone likes rain because I said so)

Other parts of Anuli's design that were influenced by the tree are:

tree's new leaves came out slightly wavy, and some full grown leaves are still a little wavy, hence why Anuli's face leaves are a bit wavy.

Each new leaf comes with the remnants of the 'bud thing'(?) that's basically two wispy brown triangles, hence why Anuli's face has wispy brown triangles at the edges (right before the leaf comes out)

some of the older used to have brown spots from when I was afraid to water plants because I was stressing about doing it wrong. Those fell off when the tree was moved... but Anuli still has them (most visible on faer wings although the tree got these huge brown spots. Anuli has little ones. But now the tree also has little ones so it's okay. )

You can tell which arts are before ANuli lost faer leaves. ANd I lost the fragments I tore off so... yea anywho Anuli has broken leaves on one side.

"Draw your mood in this chart" Anuli gets sudden bursts of happiness and overall the constant guilt isn't treating faer well. Kamari refuses to acknowledge how bad being the High Protector is. And Ankh does know shit about feelings.

Anuli's pondering, and has gotten very comfortable with the idea of trying to get faerself as upset as possible.

Names. (Kamari means moon.) Alsoo nooo I don't know how languages work here. Ankh just means 'eye' so like... IDK what to tell you.

Ignore how Sitara's design looks a lot like Aisfa... I'm going to change Aisfa's design a bit.

Anywho so Sitara hangs around Anuli for another reason that I couldn't draw that well.

The siblings. (There is a height difference... I just didn't draw that. ANuli's a lot smaller than most dryads... although no one knows faer age and everyone ages differently.)

Kamari didn't think faerself one to hold grudges. Fae doesn't usually.

sobbing and crying. The only expressions I know how to do.

About the height difference of faries. Techincally if you go by trees then Ankh is a lot taller than Kamari... but techincally trees are terms for tree like things that are wildly different and at some point the fact that they are all bipedal makes no sense anyways. So... suspend your disbelief? I did at one point try to design bird-like and four-legged dryads and ended up drawing what was easiest for me. I went crazy trying to get everything scientifically accurate soooo theyyy'reee nooot. The tree society is accurate and that's about it.

Ehhhh I'm not that good at drawing anything but floating heads (and I only know how to draw arms when they're bent). But here's Kamari!

(And so all sorts of dryads will have all sorts of different body types and proportions and suchh... so basically I'm giving myself lotsss of creative liberty here)

Writing update #3

Anuli - in trying to make sense of faer world, fae turns it into a story. Lots of stories. So many stories. Which take lots of thinking, so much thinking that faer prose is 90% thoughts, with bits of dialogue and a vauge plot. Which is intentional. Anuli will never know what’s going on. Hence storytelling to find some way to understand the universe which alludes faer so.

The caveat is that Anuli puts everything into storytelling rules, and they have to follow those rules, especially faer emotions, which follow no rules and their constant mood swings torment faer constantly.

Which can and will cause issues.

Such as the guilt over the cozy little backstory fae ruined.

Kamari - genuinely believes the system that’s eroding faer morality and soul will give faer a happy ending. Never mind that fae doesn’t see other fairies as individuals anymore and finds faer songs broken and stuttered and a constant anxiety over wasted time, better utilized time, more efficient time fills faer brain. Fae will finish what fae must in order to earn faer happiness, even if fae gets no happiness before that.

Ankh - the system is the issue. It is the disease. To remove of the disease would be to create a sense of contentment and comfort for everyone. Ankh may not be able to feel emotions in the way others do - not that fae cares - but fae will not rest until the disease is gone

In the meantime, have some fiddle leaf figs:

Once you start recognizing this one, you see it EVERYWHERE. It's the 'it' plant of modern indoor plants.

And they have some... interesting quirks.

They grow in the wild on other trees, strangle these hosts with their roots, and steal their nutrients. (Baby's first murder.. yay!)

They originate from Africa and like growing in indirect life, in the understory I think... (They would grow under other trees because... you know.)

They HATE being moved. DO NOT MOVE THEM. If they like the spot they are in, consider it a miracle and do not - I repeat - do not move them.

They like being root bound! Part of the reason ANuli has curly roots are because the roots mirror that of faer tree.

(Also also, all this does play a part in Anuli's character too. Too creative and in faer head? Welp, the tree also has strong roots... which work as a brain here.

Kamari has to run away with ANuli.

And let's just say that ANuli... doesn't take it well.

I think it is very important for you all to know that despite my semi-regular turning (taking care of plants with executive dysfunction is like... 'I'm sorry little ones I'm dehydrated too we can be dehydrated together<3')

Anuli's tree is still lopsided.

It has two main 'trunks'/branches, and they used to grow at roughly the same time and now one of them is just... so ridiculously large that it covers up the TV from that angle (but moving a fiddle leaf fig is... not recommended. My mom wanted it in another corner once and the tree - and I - threw a fit)

The tree of wobbly and leans to one side and now it's warmer so it's starting to grow leaves again... ON ONE SiDE.

I don't even know what to say other than... that's Anuli's tree for sure.
