Unconventional Plants and Herbs in Witchcraft:
Entry No. 3
Stinging nettle (Urtica diocia)
General Information and History:
General info:
Depending on the subspecies, Urtica diocia is either classed as native or exotic in British Columbia. However, in some places in North America it is classified as invasive. Nettle can also be found in north Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Readily found in disturbed habitats (roadsides, barnyards etc). Meadows, open forests. Always in rich moist soil.
The entire plant is edible after cooking or drying
The sting comes from the small needle like hairs on the plant, when they come into contact with skin, irritating chemicals are injected (such as formic acid).
History:
Nettles have been used for hundreds of years, not only as a food source and a medicinal, but for textiles and fibres as well. It is incredibly strong when used for fabrics and holds up to the test of time.
Medicinal Information:
Note: use at your own risk. If pregnant/nursing, taking medications, or have medical conditions, contact a physician prior to use. Please be aware that medicinal herbs are meant to be used in moderation. This is NOT a guide to usage.
Possible Properties: antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, antihistamine, hypotensive, diuretic, as well as the ability to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Methods of use: edible, tea, tincture, hair rinse, etc.
Used for: painful muscles and joints, eczema, arthritis, gout, anemia, allergies, hair growth…and more!
Usage in Witchcraft:
Now, compared to my other two entries, nettle is much more common compared to the others. However, I believe it is under utilized and under appreciated. So while it might not fit under the “unconventional” aspect of these posts, I decided to write on it anyways. Below lies the most common correspondences I found.
Common Correspondences: Protection, Purification, Healing, Binding, Banishing, Boundaries, Warding, Lust, return to sender.
Other very important information
Some information is derived or cross referenced from: PLANTS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST Washington, Oregon, British Columbia & Alaska. (Paul B. Alaback). This is a SUPERB field guide if you live in the area(s) mentioned and it carries a wealth of information. I HIGHLY recommend it!
In regards to foraging:
Be safe, sustainable, and ethical when foraging. (Click the link)
ALWAYS positively identify before use. If you’re not 100% sure, don’t use it!
Be prepared for a possible negative reaction or allergy. When trying new things, try a small amount first.
Know the local area/the dangers (terrain, wild animals, incoming weather, etc) be prepared!
DO NOT take more than you need/can use. (This does not apply to invasive species)
Harvest from different locations if possible.
Do as little damage to the plant and grounds.
Use a mesh bag to collect in the case of mushrooms.
Make an effort to spread seeds from plants when harvesting if possible. (This does not apply to invasive species)
This post is not a comprehensive guide to stinging nettle and it’s usage, it is a brief and general overview of information that I have compiled, and not necessarily beginner friendly. Please treat it as such. Happy spell crafting! :)

What are the latest advancements in minimally invasive cardiac surgeries, and how do they benefit patients?
Minimally invasive cardiac surgeries have undergone significant advancements in recent years, offering patients numerous benefits over traditional open-heart procedures. These innovations aim to reduce surgical trauma, minimize complications, and promote faster recovery times. This article explores the latest developments in minimally invasive cardiac surgeries and their advantages for patients, with insights from Rhythm Heart and Critical Care.
1. Robot-Assisted Cardiac Surgery
One of the most notable advancements is the integration of robotic systems into cardiac surgery. Robot-assisted procedures allow surgeons to perform complex heart surgeries through small incisions with high precision. The robotic arms provide enhanced dexterity and stability, translating the surgeon's movements into precise actions on a micro scale. This technology reduces the invasiveness of procedures, leading to less postoperative pain, reduced risk of infection, and quicker recovery times. For instance, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi have successfully implemented robotic cardiac surgeries, enabling patients to resume normal activities within weeks.
2. Rota-Ablation for Calcified Arteries
Patients with heavily calcified coronary arteries often face challenges during traditional angioplasty due to the rigidity of the blockages. Rota-ablation, a technique employed at Rhythm Heart and Critical Care, addresses this issue by using a diamond-coated burr to drill through calcified plaques. This approach facilitates the successful placement of stents in previously untreatable arteries, improving blood flow and patient outcomes. The use of rota-ablation has been instrumental in treating elderly patients with complex coronary artery disease, offering them a viable alternative to more invasive surgeries.
3. Intravascular Imaging Technologies
Advancements in intravascular imaging, such as Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), have enhanced the precision of minimally invasive cardiac procedures. These imaging modalities provide real-time, high-resolution visuals of the interior of blood vessels, allowing for accurate assessment of plaque composition and vessel dimensions. Such detailed imaging enables tailored interventions, reducing the risk of complications and improving long-term outcomes. At Rhythm Heart and Critical Care, the implementation of IVUS has been pivotal in decision-making during angioplasties, ensuring optimal stent placement and efficacy.
4. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
For patients with severe aortic stenosis who are at high risk for open-heart surgery, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) offers a less invasive alternative. This procedure involves delivering a replacement valve via a catheter, typically inserted through the femoral artery, and implanting it within the diseased aortic valve. TAVI has been associated with shorter hospital stays, reduced mortality rates, and improved quality of life, especially in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities. Rhythm Heart and Critical Care has successfully performed TAVI procedures, demonstrating its efficacy in high-risk patient populations.
Rhythm Heart and Critical Care
5. Drug-Eluting Balloons (DEB)
Drug-Eluting Balloons represent an innovative approach for treating certain types of coronary artery disease. Unlike traditional stents, DEBs deliver antiproliferative medication directly to the vessel wall during balloon inflation, inhibiting restenosis without leaving a permanent implant. This technique is particularly beneficial for patients with small vessel disease or those at risk of stent-related complications. The use of DEBs at Rhythm Heart and Critical Care has provided effective treatment options for patients unsuitable for stenting or surgery, highlighting the versatility of minimally invasive interventions.
6. Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) Measurement
Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) is a diagnostic technique that measures pressure differences across a coronary stenosis to assess its physiological significance. By determining whether a blockage impedes blood flow sufficiently to cause ischemia, FFR guides the necessity for intervention, ensuring that only lesions warranting treatment are addressed. This approach prevents unnecessary procedures, reduces healthcare costs, and tailors treatment to individual patient needs. The availability of FFR at Rhythm Heart and Critical Care exemplifies the commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care.
Patient Benefits
The advancements in minimally invasive cardiac surgeries offer several significant benefits to patients:
Reduced Surgical Trauma: Smaller incisions and precise techniques minimize damage to surrounding tissues, leading to less pain and faster healing.
Shorter Hospital Stays: Minimally invasive procedures often result in reduced hospitalization periods, allowing patients to return home sooner.
Faster Recovery: Patients experience quicker rehabilitation and can resume daily activities more rapidly compared to traditional surgery.
Lower Risk of Complications: The precision of advanced technologies reduces the likelihood of surgical complications, such as infections or excessive bleeding.
Improved Quality of Life: Effective minimally invasive interventions alleviate symptoms and enhance overall well-being, particularly in high-risk or elderly patients.
In conclusion, the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery continues to evolve, integrating cutting-edge technologies that enhance the safety and efficacy of cardiac care. Institutions like Rhythm Heart and Critical Care are at the forefront of adopting these innovations, ensuring that patients receive the most advanced and compassionate treatment available.

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 1165: Schistosoma japonicum sja-let-7 Inhibits the Growth of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells via Cross-Species Regulation of Col1α2
Liver fibrosis, a critical precursor to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), results from chronic liver injury and significantly contributes to HCC progression. Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease, is known to cause liver fibrosis; however, this process can be modulated by schistosome-derived #miRNAs. Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that Schistosoma japonicum extracellular vesicles (EVs) deliver sja-let-7 to hepatic stellate cells, leading to the inhibition of Col1α2 expression and alleviation of liver fibrosis. Given the well-documented antifibrotic and antiproliferative properties of the let-7 #miRNA family, this study aims to preliminarily investigate the effects of the sja-let-7/Col1α2 axis on BALB/c mice and HCC cell line SNU387, providing a basis for the potential application of parasite-derived molecules in HCC therapy. In the present study, schistosome-induced fibrosis datasets were analyzed to identify the role of Col1α2 in extracellular matrix organization. Pan-#cancer analysis revealed that Col1α2 is upregulated in various #cancers, including HCC, with significant associations with immune cell infiltration and clinical parameters, highlighting its diagnostic importance. Functional assays demonstrated that transfection with sja-let-7 mimics significantly reduced Col1α2 expression, inhibited HCC cell proliferation, migration, and colony formation. These findings suggest that sja-let-7, by targeting Col1α2, has the potential to serve as a therapeutic agent in HCC treatment. This study indicates the pivotal role of Col1α2 in liver fibrosis and HCC, and the promising therapeutic application of helminth-derived #miRNAs. https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4425/15/9/1165?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Abstract
Aging is characterized by a progressive inability to maintain homeostasis, self-repair, renewal, performance, and fitness of different tissues throughout the lifespan. Senescence is occurring following enormous intracellular or extracellular stress stimuli. Cellular senescence serves as an antiproliferative process that causes permanent cell cycle arrest and restricts the lifespan. Senescent cells are characterized by terminal cell cycle arrest, enlarged lysosome, and DNA double-strand breaks as well as lipofuscin granularity, senescence-associated heterochromatin foci, and activation of DNA damage response. Curcumin, a hydrophobic polyphenol, is a bioactive chemical constituent of the rhizomes of Curcuma longa Linn (turmeric), which has been extensively used for the alleviation of various human disorders. In addition to its pleiotropic effects, curcumin has been suggested to have antiaging features. In this review, we summarized the therapeutic potential of curcumin in the prevention and delaying of the aging process.
