wow.
the mental gymnastics of "famous macho actor dt is playing feminine and therefore we can intuit that this production thinks femininity is weak (because femininity is weak)" is fascinating to me. and no critical queer or intersectional feminist reads were accessed on this day 😩
i will say, between this and the breakfast show lady outright saying "you look like a woman!!!" there's an interesting paper to write about the gender of richard ii in the play, david tennant's portrayal, and modern day transphobia in a microcosm
the discomfort with which some people put their lens on the production and richard ii generally (the idea that it's "opaque" or his character's emotions and motivations are hard to gauge) bubbling beneath the surface of famous actor david tennant is doing this one out of the history plays and not *doesnt spin wheel that hard* henry v who is so much more accessible?? and now he looks like a woman!
anyway: "the play in which dt was just so hot and gender transgressive it made everyone want to kill her... slut." #feministreads
lgbt hcs for dt's shakespeare roles
touchstone - genderfluid but he doesn't know what that is. doesn't particularly care abt the gender of the person he dates. though he has only been in relationships w women and also he cannot keep a relationship down for more than 2 months
antipholus of syracuse - cishet man. but this is incidental what really matters is that i think he is someone who was rejected by every girl he tried to confess his eternal and undying love towards
romeo - this is a he/him lesbian. just trust me on this one
berowne - the one disaster bi in a friend group of cishet men. someone please free him!
hamlet - trans man obviously bc this is hamlet. ace and bi as well but specifically in the sense that i feel like he hooked up with guildenstern one time and the sex was so terrible he spent a solid few years believing he was straight
benedick - the most he/they aroace bisexual you'll ever see in your life
richard ii - gay & nonbinary transfem. in fact so transfem that david tennant the actor started getting microaggressed by interviewers in real life
macbeth - nonbinary probably but he is currently plotting a whole bunch of murders and sinking himself further & further into the Blood so he doesn't have the time to think about that rn
#sry this has been briefly hijacked by ricky ii#really we need to go back and give all of them a proper going-over#my confession is that ive never seen as you like it#but dt was a lil jester so yeah i will absolutely buy what you're selling in that first one#antipholus is simply correct... sry my guy you're not that interesting on this front except for the disasters in dating#romeo has always been a he/him lesbian -- ive always seen romeo on a sliding scale towards hamlet#that is -- on the very very surface they may look similar but the former wouldve tried out testosterone and stayed firmly in lesbian sphere#(and am never sure if he'd have stuck with it or not -- hard to say when he doesnt live long. but he'd have tried it out at least)#and hamlet is one of shakespeare's most trans men and has been since at least the dawn of cinema w sarah bernhardt and asta nielsen#gosh it's a shame none of these were done by the all-female production w harriet walters for comparison#that was tempest/julius caesar/henry ivpt2#never have i seen the overlap of lesbian/genderfluid/trans man/agender/crossdresser/non-binary SO clearly#(i need to watch the maxine peak and the ruth negga hamlets i think they could save me)#anyway i digress...#benedick... i mean ive written words about benedick -- none more are needed in these tags you are simply correct#and macbeth: ok those tags about his rejection of self... macbeth needs to watch *i saw the tv glow* before he starts killing#the other question is does lady macbeth know/intuit/understand something about her spouse?#smthsmth about her -- much more famous -- genderplay also in relation to motherhood and unsex me and only give birth to boys etc.#this is why the macbeths are a perfect couple (like the inverse of benedick and beatrice) -- theyre skipping around who's wearing#the masculine gender hat#would that i were a man indeed...#and dt has a penchant for playing roles opposite female characters like this........#shakespeare#gosh i need to go to the archives clearly...
