From what I recall in the early internet, in the days of “XYZ ate my balls”, there was a complete archive of Barney horror stories, and this wasn’t even on fanfiction.net it was either a single author or a collection of different stories.
They were written *really* well, one went so far as to contain mass brainwashing of children, body horror, tons of violence, gore, and what is now better defined as “trigger-matter” (I just came up with the term, it seems to fit, use it as a neutral-charged word for “psychologically sensitive topic”) with Barney and his dinosaur friends all being the antagonizing monsters of the stories.
As was written on the site, “concerned parent groups” (AKA parents who will do anything but supervise their children) tried to get the content taken down, and thankfully failed. I want to say one of the stories was called “Day of the Bharni”, and I remember reading all of the stories several times over the years.
Disgusting, horrifying, brutal, and just…just great shit.
But like, that happens with everything that gets stupid popular with children which is also annoying. I’m without a doubt certain there is hate-fiction of Elsa from Frozen, Elmo from Sesame Street, and most definitely TOWERS of it on Caillou, and I’d stake my left nut that it was written by the parents themselves. No one hates that nightmare of a Charlie Brown reject more than parents.
So yeah, in summary, Barney is a perfect example of “love to hate” subject matter, and it’s almost a natural reaction to do so. Plus, it was the fucking 90’s, that decade was…unhinged.
Fans of Urban Fantasy/Horror Settings:
What supernatural bullshit was behind that time in the 90s when everyone on earth unanimously decided they murderously hated Barney The Dinosaur, the fictional purple T-Rex, for no clear reason whatsoever?
Like, I was one of them, and I don't even know why it happened.
There was clearly some kind of global ritual or something happening there, right?

New pin via @firesidefiction. The lighting in this was a huge pain (enamel pins always are!) but if you can't see it, the three arrows are pen nibs. BTW, Fireside pays its artists and writers well, and you can read their stories for free online.

I found them!
Now, BE GENTLE with this link, this thing is an internet antique. Tragically the images are all broken and seemingly lost to time and digital dust, but I'll be archiving the stories immediately in the name of digital preservation. I can't tell you how many times I read these things when insomnia cursed me, hugging my knees on the office chair on my parents' computer in my bedclothes as a middle schooler, devouring the chapters until two or three in the morning. Bless you, Brian Bull, you wonderful sick fuck!
