(Archive) Animated movie of the day: The Iron Giant (1999)
Originally posted: January 2nd, 2022
What if a gun had a soul? This is the question that motivated this film's director, Brad Bird, to pursue this project. Such a particular reflection didn't come from nowhere, however. Not unlike the children's book that inspired it(called The Iron Man), it came from a place of grief. While in Ted Hughes case it came from the loss of his wife, in Bird's case it came from the lost of his sister to an act of violence from her own husband.
And this grief and contempt for violence is at the core of the film. It's exploration of loss and mortality is as tender as it is elegant, where a kid can play the role of the older brother to the child-like giant thanks to knowing said loss. It's criticism towards violence is also nuanced and detailed, raging from discussing the human consequences to showing many of it's absurd motivators. It takes the chance to make a scathing statement about America's cold war paranoia and the poison that is the "strike first" mentality for what it is: A self destructive endeavor for which innocent people pay the price.
But more importantly, there's the theme of choice. No matter the circumstances, you choose what you do with what you have. If a killer robot from outer space can assert it's own identity as a hero who values the beauty of life, so can we. A beautiful modern fairy tale using scifi and comic book imagery for it's allegory, that is as fun as it is touching, but also genuinely valuable. An underrated masterpiece that is finally getting it's due.

For anon asking about the rom com marriage trope! He's Just Not That Into You actually does this really well.
Man (Ben Affleck) doesnt want to get married because he sutbbornly hates traditions, etc. Woman (Jen Aniston) is worried especially due to social pressure from friends this indiciates lack of committment and that she'll one day be left with nothing so after 7 years give him ultimatum: marriage or they break up.
Man sees this as an attack on his very principles and thinks woman doesnt see him, trust him or appreciate him for who he really is. He is offended by ultimatum, and says no.
Woman sees this choice as man holding onto stubborn pride (with no ability to compromise) over wanting to be with her (and her fears have been encouraged by society) and proceeds to break up.
Fast forward, woman goes through some family heartache and man comes to help because they still have history obviously. During this time, its obvious to audience man actually is not a traditional man (keep in mind release date of film/movie) because he actually cleans/cooks. I think this is important because it reinforces his anti-traditional values are actually genuine and not about avoiding committment.
Woman decides to totally compromise everything and says lets get back together, I can live without marriage. This is her saying, I see you as you are. I trust you completely.
Now that man knows he is trusted and seen, only now does he also compromise and propose because he knows it is important to woman.
Further, they have a small wedding on man's boat which is obviously a further compromise on woman's part to make sure man is able to enjoy the wedding too. Which I think is super cute and very them.
So in the end they both must compromise to show they care about each other. That's the romantic trope!!
I think it's perfectly done in this movie because man's character (or whoever is anti-marriage) has to be properly anti-marriage and not actually anti-committment for it to work.
Yes! I didn't mention this film because I've never seen it whole (no idea what was happening at the beginning xD) but I remember there was Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck and that he was there for her during the hard time but didn't want to get married. You're right, it's told in a really nice way.

Matt Gertz at MMFA:
Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance is using a right-wing media tour to clean up the firestorm over his remark that the country is run by “childless cat ladies” who “don't really have a direct stake” in its future. It isn’t going well. [...]
Mimicking Carlson’s cruel affect, weird obsessions, and unhinged misogyny helped Vance win support for his Senate campaign from the Fox star and his viewers, and he made similar comments to other right-wing audiences at the time. But the Carlson clip resurfaced after Vance became former President Donald Trump’s running mate, exposing his message to the broader public and triggering a wave of revulsion. Vance’s attempts to curtail the political damage — through even more interviews with pro-Trump pundits — are further exposing the dangers of his reliance on the right-wing bubble.
Vance’s first try at rebutting his critics, on former Fox host Megyn Kelly’s streaming show, was a debacle. He claimed to have been making a “a sarcastic comment,” joking that he has “nothing against cats,” as if that had been the real concern with his remark. And he lashed out at the actress Jennifer Aniston, who has publicly discussed her struggles with fertility and criticized Vance’s “childless cat ladies” comment, calling her response “disgusting.” Attacking celebrities plays well within the right-wing bubble, where cultural resentment makes for great content. But outside of it, politicians who don’t wish to cultivate reputations as off-putting weirdos generally try to avoid generating headlines about their feuds with a star of Friends. The Trump campaign apparently recognized that Vance’s Kelly interview had failed to stop the bleeding because he took another shot at it with a Sunday night appearance on former GOP congressman Trey Gowdy’s Fox show. But Gowdy wouldn’t defend Vance’s remark; he led into the interview by pointing out that Catholic nuns don’t have children but “love this country, living lives of service to others,” and declared that “some of the finest people I know don’t have children.”
[...] But that’s not what Vance said. He told Carlson that “the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children” and that it does not “make any sense that we've turned our country over to people who don't really have a direct stake in it.” He did not offer any rhetorical carve-outs for those who might wish to have children but struggle to find a partner, or with fertility, or with the adoption system. And he included Harris, who has two stepchildren, among the “childless cat ladies” who he claimed lack “a direct stake” in the country. Since it’s not politically viable to defend what he actually said, Vance is pretending that he was making a critique of Democrats over “anti-child” policies. But because that’s not true, he has to make up Democratic positions to get mad about.
Trump VP pick J.D. Vance is going on a right-wing media tour to clean up his disastrous “childless cat ladies” comments he made back in 2021.

do you really believe that jared is a better actor than jensen?
specially in the l few seasons?
his name is the first on the call sheet” you guys go around with this like it’s his saving grace , jennifer aniston’s name was the first but if it weren’t for characters like Monica and Chandler no one would have watched that show .
I don’t have anything against jared , but his fans are so bitter and they can’t praise him without belittling jensen, his acting, his looks, his wife, or even his a*s
body shaming him won’t make jared better.
I’m sorry you had a rough time with jensen’s bitter stans , but boy oh boy try seeing jared bitter stans talk about jensen (without engaging) with them , you could physically taste their hate
Jared is a character actor. People like to say character actors are "better actors" than personality actors, however there is a reason why character actors are usually not leads in movies or tv shows because most people actually prefer personality actors, which Jensen is good at. Jared is a character actor trapped in a leading man role.
Jared's first on the call sheet isn't a saving grace, it's facts, and it gets brought up more by Ackles Army than Jared fans. Why? Butthurts, Anon, all butthurts. You got to read this treasure. In the early days of SPN, AAs tried to downplayed first billings ....
AAs 2005: “The only reason why this Jared guy has first billing is because the ‘a’ in Jared comes before the ‘e’ in Jensen.”
AAs 2007: "Jared only got first billings because he was better known thanks to Gilmore Girls."
AAs 2008: "Jensen is the real star, this credit order business only happened because of their agents, and Jensen's agent was asleep at the wheel."
AAs 2009: "Billing order is of no importance, both Jensen and Jared have top billings."
AAs 2011 through 2017: “Jared has top billings only because the ‘a’ in Jared comes before the ‘e’ in Jensen.”
Newbie fans: "But doesn't Ackles comes before Padalecki in the alphabet?"
AAs: "Shut up Jared stans! Why do you hate Dean so much?!"
AAs 2021: "Dean was originally supposed to die by the end of the 1st season, that's the only reason why Jared's name was first".
The bitter AAs hate that the first billing t hing because it was evidence of Jared’s success at an earlier age than Jensen’s. The only reason why Jared’s fans bring up his first billing because they know how much it needles and aggravates the AAs who just won't let it go and keep bringing it up, if not more than the Jared girls do.
Jared fans stay in their lane when they're on a bash bender and don’t actively tag actors and their fans their hate. AAs (and Destiel hellers) aggressively and relentlessly tag Jared and his fans their hate. See the difference? AAs, minions, and hellers would go into Jared’s SM to send threats of violence and even death. Jared fans don't return the favor and stay out of actors' SM. Sure they’ll take screenshots to laugh about it in their own TL or blogs and tag it “anti”, but again they’re not sending their hate directly to Jensen. See the difference?
I've never body shamed Jensen what the hell are you talking about?
Whenever Anons tell me that Jared fans are just as bad as AAs and hellers, I always ask for receipts. I'm still waiting for them to pony up the receipts years later. Anon, you could be the first! I'll be right here waiting for your receipts of Jared fans sending public threats of violence and death to Jensen on twitter, intagram, and tick tock. You know your mission, now go!

The Best-Kept Celebrity Beauty Secrets for Ageless Skin
When it comes to flawless, ageless skin, celebrities often seem to have the magic touch. Their glowing complexions and youthful looks make many of us wonder what their secret is. The truth is, while genetics play a role, many celebrities rely on certain beauty practices to keep their skin looking youthful and radiant. In this article, we’ll unveil some of the best-kept celebrity beauty secrets for ageless skin, and you’ll see that with the right approach, you too can achieve a glowing complexion.
1. Consistent Skincare Routine
One of the most common celebrity beauty secrets is maintaining a consistent skincare routine. Celebrities know that taking care of their skin daily is key to keeping it in top shape. This routine typically includes cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen.
Cleansing: It’s crucial to cleanse the skin every morning and night to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. This helps prevent clogged pores and breakouts.
Toning: Toning helps balance the skin’s pH levels and preps it for the next steps in the routine.
Moisturizing: Moisturizing keeps the skin hydrated and prevents it from becoming dry and flaky.
Sunscreen: Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Many celebrities credit their youthful skin to daily sunscreen use, which protects against harmful UV rays that cause premature aging.
2. Hydration Is Key
Celebrities often emphasize the importance of staying hydrated, both inside and out. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day keeps the skin plump and radiant. Many stars also use hydrating face masks or serums with ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and give their skin a dewy glow.
3. Facial Massages
Facial massages are another celebrity beauty secret that helps keep the skin looking youthful. Massaging the face stimulates blood circulation, which can enhance the skin's natural glow. It also helps to relax facial muscles, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Celebrities like Meghan Markle have shared their love for facial massages, often using tools like jade rollers or gua sha stones. These tools help to depuff the face, lift the skin, and improve lymphatic drainage, resulting in a more sculpted and youthful appearance.
4. Using Natural Oils
Many celebrities swear by natural oils to keep their skin smooth and hydrated. Oils like coconut, rosehip, and argan oil are popular choices. These oils are packed with essential fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish the skin and help maintain its elasticity.
For example, Miranda Kerr is a fan of rosehip oil, which is known for its anti-aging properties. This oil is rich in vitamins A and C, which help to brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of scars and fine lines.
5. Exfoliation
Regular exfoliation is another key to achieving ageless skin. Celebrities often use gentle exfoliants to remove dead skin cells and reveal fresh, glowing skin. Exfoliating also helps to improve the effectiveness of other skincare products by allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin.
Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston have mentioned using gentle exfoliants, such as those with lactic acid or fruit enzymes, to keep their skin smooth and radiant without causing irritation.
6. Healthy Diet
A healthy diet plays a significant role in maintaining youthful skin. Many celebrities follow a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. These foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help to protect the skin from damage and promote a healthy complexion.
For example, leafy greens like spinach and kale are full of vitamins C and E, which are essential for skin health. Berries, nuts, and fatty fish like salmon are also great for keeping the skin looking youthful and radiant.
7. Adequate Sleep
Getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining ageless skin, and many celebrities make it a priority. During sleep, the skin repairs itself, and new cells are formed. Lack of sleep can lead to dull, tired-looking skin and the appearance of dark circles and puffiness.
Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow emphasize the importance of getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night to keep the skin looking fresh and rejuvenated.
8. Professional Treatments
While many celebrities rely on at-home skincare routines, they also turn to professional treatments to maintain their ageless beauty. Treatments like facials, chemical peels, and laser therapy can help to improve the texture and tone of the skin, reduce fine lines, and address any specific concerns.
For instance, many celebrities opt for regular facials that include microdermabrasion or oxygen therapy to keep their skin smooth and glowing. These treatments help to exfoliate the skin, boost collagen production, and improve overall skin health.
9. Stress Management
Stress can take a toll on the skin, leading to breakouts, dullness, and premature aging. Many celebrities practice stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to keep their minds and bodies in balance. By managing stress, they can maintain clear, glowing skin and prevent the signs of aging.
10. Positive Mindset
Finally, a positive mindset is an underrated but powerful beauty secret. Celebrities often talk about the importance of self-love and confidence in their beauty routines. When you feel good about yourself, it shows in your skin. Smiling, staying positive, and embracing your natural beauty are all part of the secret to ageless skin.
Conclusion
Achieving ageless skin doesn’t require a miracle; it’s all about adopting the right habits and sticking to them. By following these celebrity beauty secrets, you can maintain a youthful, glowing complexion for years to come. Remember, consistency is key, and taking care of your skin from the inside out will lead to lasting results.

TIL that in AAVE, "they killed Jesus, what wouldn't they do to you?" means "Jesus was perfect but he was still betrayed and killed, what do you think the same kind of person would do to you, who is not perfect?" While for Jews, "they killed Jesus" is what synagogue shooters say.
Twitter is a trashfire rn because Jamie Foxx instagrammed this about "#fakefriends" while in hospital and Jennifer Aniston screenshotted and "condemned its antisemitism" to all 40 goddamn million of her followers. Non-Jewish Black people are very angry that Jamie Foxx had to clarify he wasn't being anti-Semitic and apologize for using AAVE, which is misappropriated by non-Black people all the time without any attempt at cross-cultural comprehension (valid), while non-Black Jewish people are mad that the necessity for such clarification is called anti-Black when it's literally an antisemitic slogan (also valid).
I think the takeaway from this should be: 1) If you're white, do not put Black people on blast*, ever, because even if they are bigoted, they will be punished not for being bigoted but being bigoted while Black,
2) Actually don't put anyone on blast if there is a possibility of them being doxxed, especially if you have a significant following, when you can privately message, block and report, or otherwise keep the consequences contained to the specific platform without real names and faces identified**,
3) Don't put your personal business on a public platform, especially if you're a public figure,
4) Acknowledge lateral oppression exists and center and protect the most vulnerable members of your community (who are in this case Black Jews who always take the brunt of this discourse).
And mostly importantly:
5) Never trust white women***
*and Indigenous and People of Colour obviously, but I wanted to keep this on topic. Whiteness is by definition the power to harm those who are non-white.
**If you say "no actually, I think bad people on the internet should suffer the consequences of every yahoo knowing their face and where they live" I cannot explain to you how much I want you to walk off the continental shelf into the sea, I can't keep arguing about mob mentality and punitive justice and the necessity of personal ethics in collective protection, I cannot do it
***people are somehow making this about Brangelina vs. Brannifer because its any port for misogyny in a shitstorm for them

She pointed out that he's become anti-IVF recently, and suggested he should think about the future impact that could have on his daughter.
Which is apparently a "disgusting attack" on his family.
Vance...shambling turd-man...bro...do you seriously think you are going to win a PR war against Jennifer Aniston, who, while virtually retired, remains one of the most popular celebrities in the United States?
There are still millions of Republican men who would eagerly maim themselves to spend one evening alone with that woman.
What is wrong with this man's brain?

tbf, who in the Republican party doesn't scare women? I can completely see Trump's logic going "fuck it, we're the misogynist party already, let's Commit"
I mean, most non-Trump Republicans don't scare women even if they're virulently anti-choice lol. Trump's VP shortlist also included Glenn Youngkin, Doug Burgum, and Marco Rubio, and they don't unnerve women the way JD Vance does. None of them would be implying Jennifer Aniston is a pedophile (???) or having to confirm they didn't have sexual relations with a sectional!

Discover the Power of Rose Water: Dermatologist-Backed Tips for Hair and Scalp Care
The beautiful scent isn’t the only perk.
by Marcio "MZA"
There's nothing we love more than multipurpose beauty products — rose water being one of them. Not only does it give Jennifer Aniston glowing skin but it also wields serious perks for both hair and scalp. And let's not forget that it smells amazing either. To learn more about rose water's rise in popularity among celebs and beauty enthusiasts alike, we spoke to a few haircare experts.
Is Rose Water Good for Your Hair?
"Rose water is amazing for the hair," says Lin Chen, co-founder of sustainable beauty brand Pink Moon. "It's hydrating, and adds moisture to damaged, dry hair 𑁋 it's especially wonderful for processed or colored hair."
Rose water is a mild astringent with anti-inflammatory properties that can also help to reduce oiliness, Dr. Marisa Garshick, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, tells us. So those with oily scalp, dandruff, or seborrheic dermatitis can definitely benefit from incorporating rose water into their haircare and scalp routine.
Does Rose Water Help Hair Growth?
Yes. Because rose water is beneficial to the overall health of the scalp, it can help establish a good foundation for hair growth and help prevent hair loss. "Rose petals are also high in vitamins A, B3, C, and E, which nourish the scalp and stimulate hair follicles, promoting hair growth," explains Chen.
What Hair Types Benefit From Using Rose Water?
You may be pleased to learn that rose water is suitable for all hair types, so there's no harm in giving it a try. In terms of which hair type will benefit most, Dr. Garshick says those with oily scalp and hair can benefit from its astringent properties, while those who have dry scalp and hair can benefit from the hydrating and moisturizing ones.
Can You Make Your Own Rose Water?
Rose water is really easy to make by simmering or by distillation. As the first step for both methods, it is important to pluck the rose petals from the stems to get rid of any residue.
"To make rose water by the simmering method, add rose petals to a pot and cover the petals with distilled water, allow the water to simmer until the petals lose their color," instructs Dr. Garshick.
"To make rose water through distillation, place a bowl in the center of a pot and put petals and distilled water in the pot," says Dr. Garshick. "Next, cover the pot with the lid upside down and place ice cubes in the lid. Bring the pot to a boil and then allow it to simmer until the petals lose their color."
How Should Rose Water be Applied To The Hair?
Rose water can be applied directly to the hair or scalp as shampoo, conditioner, an after-shampoo rinse, or as a mist. Although the application may vary depending on whether you make your rose water at home or buy a hair product infused with rose water, the results will be very similar.

Mary L. Trump at The Good in Us:
Politics 101: It is not a good thing when you are running for president and rumors persist that your running mate had sex with his couch. But for the Republican Party in 2024, that’s pretty much the least disturbing thing we’ve learned about J.D. Vance. We’ve been on this road for a long time. From the day failures in the 70s to get the Equal Rights Amendment passed to Donald’s getting elected despite bragging about assaulting women to his corrupt illegitimate super-majority on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, the GOP’s war on women and embrace of misogyny is hardly new. But the elevation of Vice President Kamala Harris to the top of the ticket has revealed a very simple and unsettling truth — Republican men are really bizarre when it comes to women.
We’re already seeing the vile innuendo and blatantly sexist attacks on Harris coming from the usual suspects at Fox. But American women are seeing with a new clarity what the Republican Party really thinks of them. And that’s because, like Donald, the Republican Party no longer thinks it has to pretend. Plus, of course, we’ve learned a lot since 2016. [...] On Thursday, actor Jennifer Aniston called out Vance for his disturbing 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson in which he attacked “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made. So, they want to make the rest of the country miserable too. And it’s just a basic fact. If you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez], the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children. And how does it make any sense that we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”
[...] Unfortunately, Vance isn’t the only Republican who expresses contempt for women who choose not to not have kids. In fact, it seems to be the attitude of the whole Party. Blake Masters, the 2022 Republican Arizona U.S. Senate nominee, wrote on Twitter Wednesday night that “political leaders should have children. Certainly they should at least be married. If you aren’t running or can’t run a household of your own, how can you relate to a constituency of families, or govern wisely with respect to future generations? Skin in the game matters.” First of all, Blake Masters was one of the worst Senate candidates in 2022—a gun fetishist and anti-abortion extremist who, thankfully, Arizona voters chose not to elect despite the massive amounts of money Peter Thiel poured into his campaign and his having, no matter how ill-advisedly, procreated.
J.D. Vance’s deranged misogyny-tinged “childless cat ladies” comments that he made on the July 29th, 2021 edition of the now-defunct FNC show Tucker Carlson Tonight are proof he is out-of-touch with society. Vance’s comments attacking childless women are part of his sexist and natalist worldview.
Americans should rise up and vote for Harris to keep this loser away from the White House!
