oh man i have Thoughts on this. here’s the part where i go off on one, so:

there is a saying in romania: “românia are doar doi vecini buni: serbia și…marea neagră”; “romania has two good neighbours: serbia and... the black sea”. that is to say, anica adores serbia. her brother-in-arms for as long as she has known them, and she considers them family; bound by all but blood. she confides her much less poised and pretty truths in them. she slurs and swears and will slouch a little more where she sits, the cigarettes droop lazily from her fingers and her eyes look even more tired. she drifts off; a great indicator of just how much she trusts them. 

she has slapped them across the face more than once and shaken their shoulders so hard it felt as if their teeth were moving. she overstays her welcome and they shout each-other down, but it comes from such a deep, unmoving love for them. a burning want to see them do well, to flourish. it should be said that after those slaps, she kisses the same cheek and profusely apologises, hiding shamed eyes in their shoulder.

she fancies herself as the big sister, once again, or maybe a twin in the faith and in this strange neighbourhood. still the older of the twins, but still. she fancied them, too! once upon a time! she will laugh sheepishly now at what once was a childhood crush and how flustered she would get hearing of a visitor arriving from beyond the western carpathians. she would listen to his confession so closely and blush furiously on his behalf. their shared faith makes this bond only stronger. she still looks him so fondly, though. her shoulders relax, as she heaves a sigh.

she crosses herself. “lead us in prayer, brother”.
