01.25.24 ♡
Celebrated the parents' 25th wedding anniversary by going to the wake of my tito (papa's childhood friend) and stayed there til 11-ish pm. Super unfortunate na ngayon na nga lang uli kami nagkita-kita ng childhood friends ko, hindi sa oa pero siguro nasa 10 years ago na huling kita ko sa kanila, tapos ganung event pa kami magkikita uli. Anyways, daming chika tsaa at ganap kahapon dun sa lamay kasi nga antagal di nagkita. Bale, pupunta uli kami dun today since malapit lang naman samin yung pinagbuburulan saka kase pupunta din tonight yung rest of the gang.
Yung cheesy meat fries nila parang di naseason yung meat. Ahahaha. Okay sana kaso parang may kulang talaga, ganun.
We talked about our travel plans rin kase yun talaga ang bigger plan for their 25th year kaso di pa kami makaalis at ongoing pa ang school year, so most probably sa summer break na lang kami aalis. Di pa namin alam kung saan at kelan exactly pero ang choices nila ay Bicol, Bohol, at Cebu. Ayaw na namin mag Boracay kase gusto namin matagal na stay sana eh parang nakakasawa naman kung mag-stay lang kami sa beach or sa isang place for one week?? Di rin naman kami mahihilig lumangoy talaga. Feel ko foodtrip and sceneries talaga ang hilig namin. Ahahahaha.
Super late ko na nakauwi kagabi tapos nag-discord pa kami ng friend ko para mag-parallel play. Ahahaha. Naglalaro ako simcity tas sya naglalaro ng cabin crew simulator. Super pagod kahapon pero andami ko pang ganap this week. Sana sipagin ako magpicture para may malagay naman ako dito at sa ig ko. Ahahahaha.

I want to add the inevitable caution of "what sounds did you pick to make up your 'pretty/beautiful/normal' hero's language, and what sounds make up your 'ugly/harsh/NOT-normal' antagonist's language? Why are you portraying a language/con-lang that way?"
The Romance languages derived from Latin (Spanish, French, Italian) are often considered "beautiful/sexy" and that's where a lot of people get their inspiration, but two of those languages are from notorious colonizers, and the last one is their cousin that was, uh... part of the Axis in World War 2.
Meanwhile, I grew up hearing that my own family's language (Tagalog from the Philippines, of the Austronesian language family) was "ugly" and "weird." My parents did not teach it to me and my siblings, because they were afraid we'd grow up with accents and get targeted by racist white people like they did. And it's not just racists saying that Tagalog is "ugly"--many Filipino-Americans also believe it because COLONIZATION FUCKS WITH YOUR HEAD, BABY!
Typical vowel sounds are often seen as "nice" and it's probably because they're open and round, but how do you see diphthongs like "paksiw" (sour fish stew)? and "hikaw" (earring)?
What about digraphs that aren't in the usual places you'd see them for Western words, like in "anghang" (spicy) and "ngipin" (teeth)? My sister once heard an acting classmate (or maybe her teacher) say that the "ng/nyah" sound was "soooooo primitive" or something like that, and I was just thinking "the fuck was she on about???"
The languages and conlangs that are seen as "beautiful" or at least "neutral" are frequently a colonizer's language; the languages seen as "guttural" and "harsh" are usually the language of a colonized people.
THINK ABOUT WHY THAT IS.
Fantasy Guide to Creating Your Own Language
When writer's set out to world-build, language has a huge role in creating new cultures and lending a sense of realism to your efforts. A world and people just feel more real when language is involved. As the old Irish proverb says "tír gan teanga, tír gan anam”. A country without a language, is a country without a soul. So how can we create one?
Do Your Homework
First things off, you should start by studying languages. Nobody is asking you to get fluent but it's important to understand the basic mechanics of language. You will start to see certain tricks to language, how verbs are conjugated and how gender effects certain words. It will be easier to make up your own when you know these tricks. For example, in Irish one doesn't scold but "gives out to" - "a thabhairt amach". In German, numbers are arranged differently to the English with the smallest digit arranged before the tens for example 21 - Einsundzwanzig. By immersing yourself in an array of different languages (I recommend finding ones close to how you want your language to sound), you can gain the tools necessary for creating a believable language.
Keep it Simple
Nobody expects you to pull a Tolkien or channel the powers of David J. Peterson (hail bisa vala). You're not writing a dictionary of your con-lang. You will probably use only a handful of words in your story. Don't over complicate things. A reader will not be fluent in your con-lang and if they have to continually search for the meaning of words they will likely loose patience.
Start Small
When you're learning a language, you always start with the basics. You do the exact same when writing one. Start with introductions, the names of simple objects, simple verbs (to be, to do, to have for example) and most importantly your pronouns (you will use these more than any other word, which is why I always start with them). Simple everyday phrases should always be taken care of first. Build your foundation and work your way up, this is a marathon not a race.
Music to the Ears
If your creating a new language, you're more than likely doing it phonetically. Sound is important to language and especially a con-lang because you want to trick your reader into thinking of a real language when reading the words on the page. I suggest sitting down and actually speak your words aloud, get the feel of them on the tongue to work out the spelling. Spellings shouldn't be too complicated, as I said before the readers aren't fluent and you want to make it easier for them to try it out themselves.
Also when you're creating the con-lang, it's important to figure out how it sounds to an unsuspecting ear. If a character is walking down a street and hears a conversation in a strange language, they will likely describe to the reader what it sounds like. It might be guttural or soft, it might be bursque or flowery. It's always interesting to compare how different languages flow in the ear.
Writing in Your Language
Now that you've written your language and created some words, you will want to incoperate them into your story. The way most writers do this is by italicising them. As a reader, I generally prefer authors not to go too overboard with their con-lang. Swathes of con-lang words might intrigue a reader but it can leave them confused as well. It is better to feed con-lang to your readers bit by bit. In most published works writer's tend to use words here and there but there are few whole sentences. For example in A Game Of Thrones by George RR Martin, has actually only a handful of short sentences in Dothraki despite the language being prevalent throughout the book. Daenerys Targaryen pronounces that "Khalakka dothrae mr’anha!"/"A prince rides inside me!" and it's one of the only sentence we actually see in actual Dothraki.
There's also nothing stopping you from just saying a language has been spoken. If you're not comfortable writing out the words, then don't make yourself. A simple dialogue tag can do the trick just fine.
Know your Words
I do recommend keeping an actual record of your words. Make a dictionary if you want or a simple list of words you need. This is one of the most entertaining aspects of world building, have fun with it, go mad if you like. Also here's a short list of questions you can ask yourself about language in general which might help your juices flow.

Sisig
Paborito ko ang sisig. Kahit anong okasyon, kaya kong kumain ng sisig. Kahit ilang ulit o buong maghapon, inuulam ko ito. Lalo if I have a bad day, madalas itong nagiging comfort food ko. Pero, mapili rin ako sa klase ng sisig. Ayoko ng malasak at maraming mayonnaise. Ayoko ng hindi crunchy na sibuyas. At ayoko rin nang sobrang anghang. Kaya kahit malayo ang Darangan sa amin—isang sakay ng tricycle dinadayo ko pa ang paborito kong tindahan ng sisig.
Katulad ngayon. Paggising ko ng umaga, I knew the day would not go smoothly inside my head. Nag-doomscroll lang ako buong araw sa Instagram. Pagsapit ng hapon, nang makaramdam ng gutom, naisip kong bumili ng paborito kong sisig. Habang sakay-sakay ng tricycle, iniisip kong mapapawi na lang ng sisig ang lungkot na nararamdaman at okay na ako. After all, it's just a bad day one sisig can take away.
Ilang takbo bago makababa, napatigil ang tricycle para ibaba ang ilang pasahero. Sa kabilang kalsada, nakita ko ang mga dati kong kaklase noong high school. Papauwi sila galing university; bitbit ang mga school supplies at naglalakihang backpacks. I had the sudden urge to call them up from a distance. Matagal na rin kaming hindi nagkita. Pero, bago ko tuluyang maisigaw ang pangalan nila, a realization had blocked the words in my throat. And in that very same moment, I saw myself fading away, suddenly pulverized into an echo. Malayo na sila sa akin. Nasaan na ako? Anong punto na ng buhay ang mayroon ako? I used to be one of them. I shared the dreams they have now. I had the same trajectory of life like they had.
Umaandar na ulit ang tricycle. Hindi ko na sila natawag. Ikinubli ko na lang ang sarili. Nahihiya. Nalulungkot.
