Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical
A Filipino Musical that hasn't left my mind since the mid 2010s

Although the Philippines is known for its many talented singers which include many that had crossed over to Broadway such as Lea Salonga, and Rachelle Ann Go, alongside many other Filipino-American talents like Conrad Ricamora, Arielle Jacobs, George Salazar, and Darren Criss just to name a few, the musical scene in the Philippines itself isn't as popular nor as successful in the country as it really should be.
Even with Filipino-majority musicals in states like the controversial Broadway musical "Here Lies Love" which narrates the life story of Imelda Marcos, one of the most controversial figures in Filipino politics and history today, and with Filipino stars often taking in lead or secondary roles in major productions, the musical boom of the 2010s did not come with a boom for the musical industry in the local level compared to the sudden popularity of American musicals like Hamilton, Heathers, Dear Evan Hansen, or Be More Chill to name a few.
The very few musicals that did garner the spotlight did not receive the same notoriety of these foreign productions save for one of the few musical movies to have gotten major media acclaim Loy Arcena's Ang Larawan (2017) (en. The Portrait) based on the 1997 play of the same name by National Artist Nick Joaquin which became a media frenzy as being maybe one of the few if not the only original movie not based on major series or created by a large production company to be released that year for the Metro Manila Film Festival. One of the things that had skyrocketed it to media attention was the fact that most theaters did not screen it and it was only shown in very few cinemas, but that's a story for another time.
Despite the time and devotion Filipino musical fans may have for theatre, rarely do Filipino made and produced musicals ever enter the pop culture zeitgeist due to many factors like the lack of advertising, accessibility issues, and honestly the lack of cast recordings. Out of the many throughout the 2010s, one of the few I was able to watch that I still think about at times is Ricky Lee's very own rap and rock musical Kabesang Tales.

Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical) (en. Captain Tales - A Rap n' Roll Musical) is a rap and rock musical first performed in the year 2015 and was written by renowned Filipino writer and National Artist Ricky Lee. The musical was directed by Alejandro "Bong" Ramos, with music by Jeffrey Hernandez and Alfredo Ongleo, and produced by Red Lantern Production (Inquirer, 2015).

The musical stars John Arcilla as the titular character Telesforo Juan "Kabesang Tales" De Dios, famously known for his breakout role as Hen. Anotnio Luna in the historical film Heneral Luna released the same year as the musical, alongside other talents such as Dio Marco as Karyo, Kevin Posadas as Tano de Dios, Alecx Lorica as Juli De Dios among many other talented actors (Inquirer, 2015).

The play is based on Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo (en. The Filibuster) and more specifically, the character of Kabesang Tales, the head of his barangay (a sort of Filipino village) and father of Basilio's main love interest Juli, who had turned into a guerilla bandit after his family and life were ruined by the Spanish friars. He becomes the feared Matanglawin (en. Hawkeye) who terrorizes the countryside. He plays a minor but important role in the books, being the father of one of the main secondary characters as well as being one of the main allies of the primary characters as they tried to start a revolution in the country.
The play primarily focuses on his perspective throughout the whole book with some scenes focusing more on the main protagonists Simoun and Basilio as well as his daughter Juli.
Performances and Releases
The musical had limited performances throughout some parts of the CALABARZON Region or Region IV-A, with some select performances in Metro Manila as well as some other provinces like in Mindoro, sometime during the years 2015-2017 with some being done in local cultural centers and schools throughout the region with very limited promotion outside of news stories.
The only promotional material I could really find are some posts on Facebook and a trailer in the Red Lantern Production's YouTube channel which could be seen here:
youtube
Trailer uploaded by Red Lantern Production via YouTube
There are no original cast recordings that I could find of any of the songs and the only material that I could find besides this are uploads on YouTube of scattered scenes from different parts of the play:

Full Playlist uploaded by YouTube channel pheejaypi here
I was also able to find a collection of clips of Karyo, a character possibly named after Karyo from Mga Ibong Madaragit which is a continuation novel of the El Filibusterismo written by Amado Hernandez, played by Terrence Guillermo.

Video uploaded by YouTube channel pinoy music maestro here
I remember some time in the 2010s seeing uploads of members of the cast singing in interviews I believe but I could no longer find any of these videos.
As of now, it is unknown if the production will ever come back with the last post on the Facebook page having been in 2021 with a post prior to posted on July 2019 calling for auditions in August 2019, possibly hinting that there was a planned 2020 tour for the musical before the pandemic hit.

The Plot (mostly from memory)
As there's barely any material of the live musical, I'll do my best to recollect what I could remember with the aide of the actual books to guide me. Of course, spoilers for Rizal's books Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo if you haven't read them.
The plot follows the events of El Filibusterismo but mainly from the perspective of the titular character Kabesang Tales. It begins with an extremely happy and optimistic scene with him, his family, and barangay as well as the visit of Basilio, Tales's daughter's lover to their house. I remember that there was an extremely cheesy song here between the two that a lot of people squealed over.
Tumblr media
Photo of the mentioned musical number between Basilio and Juli posted by Jayson Pascua
The perspective switches over to Basilio and his visit to his mother's grave where he is shocked to see a man there who is revealed to be the thought to be dead fugitive Crisostomo Ibarra who now goes by Simoun, a jewelry merchant from the United States. The two have a bit of an argument where Simoun tries to convince Basilio to join him and his rebellion and I don't recall exactly if there was a song, but it seems likely.
Perspective switches back to Tales as tragedy strikes as his entire family gets struck with malaria resulting in the death of his wife. I don't remember all the details here or if there was a song, but I remember a sort of depressing atmosphere for the rest of this part.

Photo showing all of the actors playing the De Dios Family posted by Jayson Pascua
The family struggles with money and friars come over to cause even more problems for them. There's a rap battle here between Tales and a friar. Here starts his downward spiral as he struggles to make ends meet as well as handle the friars that had been trying to gain his land. I don't recall if it's shown that he has to pay for a lot of lawyers, but he starts paying more and more for legal fees because of the legal drama with the friars and the government.
My sister tells me that there's a song about how good the friars are before they get properly introduced and I have a hazy memory of three friars wearing varied outfits typically associated with friars posing for the stage as people sing songs of praise and goodwill. My sister tells me that Basilio was in the ensemble here.
His son, Tano, gets drafted to the Guardia Civil (en. Civil Guard) and sent to the Caroline Islands because Tales could not pay money to prevent his draft due to their financial struggles. This is shown as a heart wrenching scene in the play where the rest of the family is left distraught.
He starts guarding his property in fear of bandits possibly taking his fields and taking whatever he has left.
Tales then gets taken by these bandits who demand ransom money for his return. There he meets Karyo, one of its leaders who tells him about the struggles of the working class and why he and the others had resorted to being bandits in the first place (?). I don't actually remember if this is the first they meet or what since I do remember that the two have a philosophical discussion about violence later and that Karyo is definitely a member of the bandits but there are scenes where he acts as the emcee during Tales's rap battle with the friar.
The bandits later lets him go back to his family where he finds that he has no one left.
Juli, in order to help with her family's financial struggles as well as pay for her father's ransom, leaves home and asks for loans and find work.
If I'm not mistaken, his father Tandang Selo goes mute with the grief of the continuous tragedies that had struck the family as well. It's hard for me to remember if this was shown in the musical.
When Tales returns, he finds himself at a loss for what has happened to his family. He is left with his daughter forced to work and his father mute. He is then met with Simoun, who comes to him as a jeweler. Simoun tempts him with some ideas of radicalization against the friars and he refuses at first before spiraling further and joining Karyo and his bandits, becoming the feared Matanglawin.
I genuinely don't remember if his meeting with Simoun was also in the musical or not but it's important context for the story.
The musical then switches perspective to Basilio, who gets implicated with a conspiracy against the government and gets arrested. A heartbroken Juli goes to Padre Camorra, a creepy priest that's been trying to corner her, to beg for his help since she saw no one else that could help her. This leads into a rather intense scene acted in shadows and lights where it is heavily implied that Juli gets assaulted.
After this, Juli sings a song about her assault where she contemplates getting revenge or retaliating but instead chooses to jump off to end her life.
The scene switches back to Tales who, unlike in the books, meet with his son again who has returned to the Philippines. This one, I know had a song in it since I remembered the extreme daddy issues punk rock vibes the scene gave off. He sang about how he no longer respected his father and that it's too late to repair things if I recall as he's now a bandit and he's a member of the Guardia Civil.

Desolate and distraught at the loss of his family, Tales gets visited by a diwata (a forest spirit/fairy) and this part was extremely out of left field and absolutely not in the books.
Here, the diwata shows Tales visions of the future (???) and directly tells him, without any sort of subtlety, that the working class, and especially farmers like him, will continue to struggle in his country in the future. He is then shown a scene of farmers in a protest who were then taken down by police in what I remember as riot gear. He contemplates the future and is further given resolve to continue his rebellion.

I need to cut in and say that this was so on the nose and is by far the weirdest and personally maybe the worst part of the show. I'm not even against the message, it just ruined my immersion and just left a weird taste in my mouth. I think the play was doing a plenty good job driving that point across already without the time travel diwata scene but maybe that's just me.
The scene cuts back to the climax of the story where Basilio, distraught over then death of Juli, finally joins Ibarra as they plant a bomb in a wedding reception that the Governor-General of the Philippines was attending. The scene plays out like it was in the books where the lamp gets tossed out by Isagani and the revolution doesn't start.
It goes back to a scene of Tales and his men trying to fight the Guardia Civil where he is shot and killed in action, by the gun of his own son. Tano realizes what he has done and is horrified. This leads to a song which later leads to a finale that sings about Tales as the cast come together for the curtains to close.

The musical ends and the cast is called on to the stage one by one, with the loudest applause going to Basilio who a lot of the girls found hot, and of course, the man himself, Kabesang Tales.

After the play and final thoughts
Ricky Lee actually attended the performance I watched and I remember so many people crowding around the actors to get their autographs. My sister bought one of Ricky Lee's book, his script writing guide "Trip to Quiapo" and had it signed but she genuinely can't find it anymore sadly. My sister also got the autograph of some of the actors and the director on that same book so I'm a little miffed that we can't find it.
I would discuss more things and even show off my old ticket but I'm pretty sure that I would end up doxxing myself if I speak any more details.
That's all I remember from it and I would love to say more or even discuss the songs but as you can see, I could barely remember them, with only maybe a solid grasp in about maybe four songs.
It's a shame that it doesn't have as much of an established release and media presence because despite that one glaring issue I had with the weird diwata scene, I quite enjoyed the musical and it remains one of the few that I actually got to experience live.
It isn't Les Miserables or Hamilton, but it's still a musical I'll probably fondly remember especially since El Filibusterismo is one of my favorite books of all time with the character of Kabesang Tales being one of the most interesting — a man of honor and virtue who slowly descends into extremist violence because society had failed him. It's sad to see this musical barely recognized and very little talked about today and I do hope that it will one day return to the stage.

September 11, 2024 l Late night Grind.
1. It’s hard to keep up: Sad truth is, mahirap pagsabayin ang pag aaral at trabaho.

UPIS holds first BSP & GSP investiture since pandemic
The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) recently held its first investiture and camp since the pandemic, officially ushering in new members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) and Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP). The BSP held their investiture in the 3-6 Bulwagan on March 1, while the GSP had theirs in the 7-12 Gym on March 8.
Boy Scouts from Grades 3-6 and Senior Scouts from Grades 7-10, along with their club advisers, selected faculty, and former Senior Scouts, organized the BSP investiture and camp. The investiture ceremony included the acceptance of the new members of the BSP, oath-taking, and the Paglagay ng Alampay where the scouting neckerchief is worn to symbolize their official recognition as Boy Scouts. A message was also delivered by the second-in-command of the Quezon City BSP Council, Asst. Chief Scout Executive Amado Dela Cruz. After the investiture, a bonfire was also done.
According to Mr. Joseph Guiao, adviser of the Senior Scouts, adjustments were made in the scouts’ schedule due to the pandemic, and the investiture was pushed back to the second semester as the organization needed to familiarize itself first with the procedures and preparations necessary for their activities.
“Due to the pandemic, the Phoenix in UPIS didn't have a proper “passing of the torch”.. We, current Phoenixes were lucky we got to go to the World Scout Jamboree in Korea to make up for our lack of experience. In relation to that, we didn't really have much experience in planning an event such as the investiture, but the investiture was still a success thanks to kuya Raymond (former Senior Scout) guiding us through the formalities,” said Troy Dela Torre, one of the six leaders or Phoenixes of the club.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the other hand, it is the first time the Junior and Senior Scouts of GSP held a joint investiture with the Star Scouts from Grade 3. This was due to the PUV transport strike last December 2023 which delayed the original date of both the Star and Senior Scouts’ investiture, moving it to March this year.
The GSP investiture program was organized by the advisers and co-advisers of the Star, Junior, and Senior Scouts. The program was executed as follows: recitation of the Law and Promise of the Star Scouts, appointment of the new Junior and Senior GSP, including the Cadets and Troop leaders, followed by the donning of pins and the alampay by the Troop Leaders and parents, respectively. After the investiture, a one-day camp was held. This included the Bravery Test (Senior Scouts only), Base Method, Flag Making and Presentation, Awarding Ceremony, and many more.
Prof. Portia Dimabuyu, on the challenges in the change of the program due the joint investiture.
“We had 2-3 days of practice in the gym. Since we didn't have enough time to practice and plan, the Star Scouts were included in the investiture of the Senior Scouts so the flow of the program was longer and kind of messy,” added Corinne Juliette Hernandez, the head Cadet.
Prior to the pandemic, participation in the GSP was not mandatory for Grades 11 and 12 as clubs were typically limited up to Grade 10. However, there arose a necessity for experienced Senior Cadets to assist and guide the newly enrolled Scouts and Cadets.
Tumblr media
Both the BSP and GSP investiture and camp required careful preparation, from arranging the venue and getting the necessary camping permits. Prior to the event, the Scouts were registered with the Quezon City Council. Briefings and practices were also conducted to ensure the smooth flow of the program.
The pandemic greatly impacted the BSP and GSP, resulting in a lack of experience among members and leader scouts. Nonetheless, the investiture and camp were still a success, thanks to the guidance of advisers and former Senior Scouts who made sure to help the new Scouts become official members of the UPIS BSP and GSP.

after 17 years here is my review of the School's Out - Forever soundtrack
1. "Death Said" - The Summer Obsession this song is fine. it's okay. kind of 2006.mp3 here, but in a way that's hard to quantify. i probably would've liked this song in 2006.
2. "What I Wouldn't Give" - Holly Brook this song is also fine. i've known about it for years (because it was mentioned by Max on the blog) but had never listened to it and. it's way softer in vibe than i expected from Max, more in line with the later-books version of her.
3. "Shaky" - Cipes And The People i did not like this song. i wouldn't leave a place if it came on the radio, but i was thinking "lmfao this dude played Beast Boy" the entire time.
4. "Underneath My Skin" - Brian Steen this is the kind of song i would have downloaded free off of last.fm in the 2000s. here is a sample of the lyrics: "please forgive me if I'm somewhat crabby / you know I like it when you call me Daddy / you're so damn catty". i do not care for these rhymes.
5. "Disappear" - The Summer Obsession i would've liked this song in 2006. it's OK. a very "man these lyrics would've been catnip to teenage me" kind of song.
6. "Wanted" - Holly Brook this song's fine. i don't know if i would have liked it in 2006, but it's okay. but at the same time... i am starting to hit the age where songs i vibed to as a teenager get played in the grocery store, and, uh, this one would at least be more appropriate for that vibe than "Untitled" by Simple Plan.
7. "The Way I Do" - Marcos Hernandez this song is fine, but not to my personal taste. i wouldn't turn the radio off if it came on.
8. "Where Do We Go From Here" - Cooper i would've liked this song in, like, 2008. unfortunate that this was, like, the one band on this album where i have had no luck in tracking down anything else they ever did.
9. "Golden Days" - Kelly Dalton this song was not to my taste. i might've liked it in 2006 but it doesn't do anything for me in 2023.
10. "Take It From Me" - The Weepies i'm pretty sure i've heard this song before now, because while i wouldn't describe myself as a serious fan of this band, i have yet to hear a song by them that i didn't like. anyway this one is good, and if you're not familiar with the band, i recommend "Nobody Knows Me At All" (which i super fucked with in 2007) and "I Was Made For Sunny Days".
11. The Angel Experiment special excerpt just in case you're not sure what book you're listening to, this file starts with a red-tailed hawk screech and a brief musical sting. but i can also reveal that this recording was... kinda featured on the website in late 2005. this version has some added audio effects -- the hawk screech and opening music; the tape-recorder "clunk", ongoing staticky hum, and ending music are in both versions -- but the text is the same. so to hear this on the old website, go to the following address -- https://web.archive.org/web/20051103120534/http://www.maximumride.com/ -- and click "Take a Listen and Take Flight". (it's not highlighted there, but the reader for this text is Evan Rachel Wood, and apparently she was in Westworld if you've seen that series)
12. School's Out - Forever special excerpt this excerpt is read by Valentina de Angelis -- more info if you go here, but there's nothing much there https://web.archive.org/web/20060420191035/http://www.maximumride.com/home.php?content=AudioCD . i should've mentioned this above, but i am not an audiobook person and therefore cannot review this track on those merits.

"Tekken 7 is one of the most popular competitive fighting games in the world especially in asia over 200 million player in asia alone and everyone dreams of becoming the best"
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
ang pangalawang pinaka mababang rank which most of the player base ay hirap namakamit ang ranggong ito kaya biglaan lang ako dumirederetcho sa ranking ladder ng diko namamalayan at nagkakaroon ako ng mga sobrang habang winstreak
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Huling hiyaw ng 7-12,  Aplaya: battle of the bands 2024
AJ Macapagal at Natalie Cuervo Mayo 29, 2024
To be honest, di ko masyado na appreciate yung bands before us dahil sa kaba lol. While performing, I realized na hindi gaanong kaganda yung tech this year compared to last (audio system, stage, etc). Despite this, pansin ko na talagang nag improve yung bands from last year, talagang nagpakita sila ng bagong sound and more confidence from the last BOTB." bilang isa siya sa mga manonood ng programa nung nakaraang taon. Most memorable part was definitely fangirling over the performances from Hey June and HSK. Sobrang idol talaga namin sila bilang banda, and they definitely delivered this year. Lalo na yung HSK, ‘matik yan na mag-momoshpit yung crowd kapag set na nila, and their songs this year were definitely the right pick."
Ika ni Francine, "Para sa akin, especially as a senior na part din ng council last year, I think this year's BOTB was really a success. The last time we had a non-alumni guest performer was in 2020 with Shirebound and Busking, so having Hey June! perform was a nice end to my term as a PKA member. Overall, I think that this year's botb was really solid, and I hope next school year, I can enjoy it more as an audience."

Insights from a Gen Z Working Student: Discover Why McDonald's is Valuable to Her Development and Gratitude
Sheila May Azul has been with McDonald’s Philippines for more than six years now. She is one of the predominantly Gen Z crew working right now at the quick service restaurant.
Tumblr media
My family, including my aunt and uncle have also worked at McDonald’s. My uncle is now in Australia working for McDonald’s),” Azul shared.
A working student, she balances work and school with determination, hoping that she could one day become a McDonald’s manager like her former trainer at work who has been recently promoted to a higher position.
What I learned in working at McDonald’s is to be always ready and enjoy your work. Enjoying your shift allows you to give a better service to customers),” Azul said.
Making customers happy is something that she and her fellow crew work to achieve every day.
Kahit ganun kasimple lang, natutuwa po kami (When customers have an enjoyable experience, they would come back to the store repeatedly. This gives us a nice feeling, especially when they remember our name and thank us. Something as simple as that makes us happy),” Azul said.
Engaging the Gen Z Workforce
This practice of gratitude and empowerment is something that McDonald’s Philippines strongly believes in. This is why in November last year, it launched its “Salamuch Crew” initiative that promoted being thankful from various perspectives.
Customers were encouraged to express their appreciation for the hard work and service provided by crew members through the Salamuch Wall, where they can post their thank you notes; Salamuch Box, where they can drop messages for the crew; and Salamuch Crew Virtual Wall, a digital wall where they can post their Salamuch stories.“Majority of our crew are Gen Z and there is a different way now in engaging these members of the workforce effectively. It has to be an experience for them and we needed to be creative in how we connect with them,” shared Adi Hernandez, Assistant Vice President for Corporate Relations at McDonald’s Philippines.
As of 2023, McDonald’s Philippines has 740+ stores across the country, with close to 60,000 crew, 95% of which are Gen Z.
Opportunities for Growth
“There’s no better time to be part of the McDonald’s Philippines family because we are in a period of aggressive growth. In 2023, we opened 50 stores and this 2024, we’re aiming to open at least 60 new stores and that will continue for the coming years. With more stores that are opening means there are more people needed to run them, therefore we’re opening more employment opportunities for young Filipinos,” Hernandez shared.
“With our aggressive growth means a bigger workforce and a responsibility for us to improve the employee experience. There are a lot of ways to engage the workforce and one of them is through recognition like Salamuch Crew,” she further said.
Last April 17, the Salamuch Crew program had its culminating activities in over 380 McDonald’s Philippines stores all over the country. One of the branches that hosted the festivities was McDonald’s Quezon Avenue-Ligaya in Quezon City.
“We believe if we recognize our crew and give them a better experience, they would do the same for our customers. We believe that if we do employee experience well, our customer experience would also follow,” said Ben Marasigan, VP of Human Capital Group at McDonald’s Philippines.

Lola of Irony
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a person who lived through two identities and through the word of God and his book, the same book who made her sacrifice her life’s greatest gift, her lover.
Teodoro Ilogan in the morning and Dory Hernandez in the night, a one hundred and one year old gay man who is now called as “Lola Dory” or “Lola Doring”. Her faith in God was admirable, it was as fierce as a lion and as sturdy as the Kavach. Though she lived as a gay man, a preference that is being pushed away by the bible and by its followers, that did not stop Lola Dory to not only embrace herself, but also to live a life where she did not regret anything.
Moreover, in a picture where it was only black and white, and brown and torn, there lived Lola Dory who fell in love with a man named Tony Hernandez.
He was a man who loved Lola Dory genuinely and passionately, passionately so that Tony does not like it whenever Lola Dory tried to search for another man. This man was not only her love but her soulmate. Soulmate who was driven away, a soulmate whose soul did not have any mate anymore. All because of Lola Dory’s belief.
Those words became a line, a line in which for Lola Dory became her saving grace, but for Tony, it became a rope which pulled his soulmate away from him. Lola Dory could still remember it as clear as a day. Her used to be Tony, slept with her on his first wedding night. However, Lola Dory pushed him away.
Although Lola Dory did that, it was not out of hatred nor envy, but love. She loved Tony so much that she wants her soulmate to have a good life and to have a family. Thus, even if making a sacrifice and sadness in her own story, she pushed Tony in a cliff to let a woman catch him.
Lola Dory’s story was full of sorrow and irony. She lived with her sister, her nephews and nieces lives near her, she said she is not lonely because of them. But she lived a life where she needs to fend for herself, despite living in a plcae full of her own flesh and blood.
Furthermore, she used to live a life full of gold and luxury where she owned four parlor shops, but because she had a stroke, she needed to sell them. Not only that, her twenty-five beauticians already left this story and left Lola Dory alone in this wide and merciless world. Because of this, Lola Dory sometimes wondered why her? Why was she left alive in this lonely world? And the conclusion she made was:
Lola Dory might live a life where people found pitiful, colorless, or full of regrets but for Lola Dory. It was a life where she did not regret anything despite being full of irony.
