43.113443°N, 131.600191°E Primorsky, Khasansky district, Primorsky krai, Russia photo by Andrey Dementev — The village of Monguguay was founded in 1885 by the Koryo Saram, ethnic Koreans who migrated to Russia first in search of better livelihoods and later to escape from imperial Japan, which occupied Korea in 1905 and annexed it in 1910. By 1926, hundreds of thousands of Koreans had fled to what had become the USSR, which responded by forcibly relocating them away from the Korean border, first to the far north, near Kamchatka, and then to the Kazakh SSR. In 1950, the village was renamed Primorsky and reclassified as a settlement for Russian workers.
