(24-10-20) This is now illegal calling or texting on the phone whilst driving and as it distracts the driver so it should be. Draft UK legislation is now being introduced to indicate that a driver who touches their phone will be breaking the law. This means that touching the phone to change the music, or interacting with the Google Maps (Sat Nav) is illegal. But actually changing the car music or sat nav isn’t, although the latter is strongly advised against.

We change our phones, on average every 2-3 years, but drive older vehicles. The past is littered with vehicle add-ons that look old fashioned and clunky well before the vehicle is past it’s best. But using a phone as the music centre and sat nav and hands-free calls is something many drivers want. It is up to AndoridAuto to make the UI on their app much better and in accordance with the law. As for iPhones - I am sure Apple will do the same.
