Secrets - Chapter 2: Moon calendar
Remus Lupin × Adrienne Macmillan
Tumblr media
Summary: Adrienne Macmillan is a Slytherin student in Hogwarts, who gets curious about his fellow classmate's, Remus Lupin's scars. Upon finding out their meaning, what will she do with this secret and the feelings she begins to feel towards the boy?
Word count: 1,782
Keywords: Marauders-era, Remus Lupin x Slytherin girlfriend, secret relationship
Trigger warnings: scars, "hate speech"
Author's note: To be honest, this might be the last work I post; recently I've been having a hard time and I even considered deleting my account. So we'll see how that goes. If anything happens and I disappear this story might be continued on AO3. Sorry for the ranty rant, hope you'll enjoy this next chapter!
Previous chapter: A rainy day

The very same night Adrienne returned with her friends to the dark, green-toned common room after dinner. She spread her books on the floor and settled down herself. 'Don't tell me you are going to do homework still,' Rachel sighed. 'It's this Divination crap… Don't worry, I'll be done quickly.' 'I'm curious what Professor Trelawney meant by those transits in your chart,' Chloe said as Ada flipped to the back of her book to the moon calendars of the year. 'Probably nothing,' Ada rolled her eyes. 'Remember how she predicted Anderson to be dead by the end of last semester? Seems to be in perfect health to me.' 'I was kinda hoping for it,' her strawberry blonde friend scoffed, and the three girls chuckled. Anderson was clinging constantly to Rachel's boyfriend; not that it mattered, for Rachel was a lot prettier, and, if nothing else, "exotic". 'Still,' Chloe pressed on. 'Astrology is a lot more exact branch.' 'I'll look into these moon phases then,' Ada joked and pointed one out at random. 'Oh, it says I shouldn't go to high places next week, cause Mars makes a challenging aspect to the Moon and I'm more likely to fall. I guess that rules out the ladder to Divination class.' Rachel laughed and Chloe threw a pillow to Ada's head. 'Just get your homework done quick, I want to tell you about Lucius.'
However, Ada found it difficult to focus. The murmured conversation of her friends, and the splashes against the underwater window, which were usually soothing, now annoyed her. The water reminded her of the rain that ruined her notes; she pulled it from her pocket and smoothed the parchment on the floor. She was replaying the Divination professor's words in her mind, the woman's big glasses, the heavy fumes of sage, the twinkle of her many and long necklaces. 'The 25th of February, my dear, the 25th of February,' Trelawney egged her on and Ada had to shake her head to wake from her stupor. With every word she wrote on the parchment, the same date flashed before her eyes and she couldn't figure out why - she checked on the moon calendar. It was a day after the full moon but of no importance to her. Then, she glanced at the notes next to her homework: still a blotchy mess, but almost clearly, the 25th of February was there.
Ada pulled the notes closer and ran her fingers across it. Now, under the warm light of the fireplace it was clear that, though the ink itself ran across the paper like many tiny spider legs, her writing left indentations into it. It was a terrible habit of hers, pressing the quill into the parchment with such force it carved into the page - not only did it make quill purchases more frequent, but also rendered any eraser spell ineffective for her.
Finally, it played into her hand.
February 25, the date that was nagging at her, was marked as one of the days Remus turned up to class with new scars. Half-heartedly, Ada checked the dates against the moon calendar. There were some days when he appeared sick and others when he missed class and stayed at the hospital wing. Huh, what are the chances, a boy syncing up with the Moon?
A boy syncing up with the full moon.
Blood flushed from her body. Surely it was a coincidence. They wouldn't let…
'I've gotta check something out in the library,' Ada jolted up, swiping her books and papers into her arms. 'What?' Rachel sounded like she had a very bad cold. 'It's late, the library is almost closed,' Chloe reasoned, but her friend was already out the door.
'Please,' begged the brunette later to the librarian. 'I have a very important essay tomorrow.' The librarian, although with her mouth pulled to the side, allowed her in, if she'd be quick. Ada didn't have to be told twice: she pulled a few volumes about magical creatures not to make it too obvious. On her way back, she steadied herself. After all, she couldn't be sure. Lupin was a quiet kid, nice, even. He can't be a bloodthirsty werewolf.
She snuck into an empty classroom and got to reading. Her own reassurance dissipated with every page she flipped, leaving no doubt when she finished all her books.
She pushed the last dusty volume close and stared into the dark classroom. The moon was waning, casting a pale veil of light on the desks. Ada turned her Lumos spell off without saying a word (she used it so often to read or study after her friends went to bed, she needed no incantation).
During the first month or so, she devoured every book that was available in the library about werewolves. She learned of the signs, of the condition, the history, and the remedies - she'd read how vicious and dangerous these people can be, but she couldn't help thinking how unfitting it was to her classmate.
She kept this discovery to herself, although everything afterwards proved her assumption to be right. A few days after the next full moon, Lupin finally returned to class after a few days of "being ill". He was still slimmer and his face sickly, with dark circles under his eyes. He just about fished out a niffler from Ada's hair (it was trying to steal her earrings) when she noticed, that, however healed they seemed, there were new scars on the boy's otherwise delicate hands. It puzzled her; why would he always get new scars - she couldn't tell, why, but she felt a pang in her chest.
A year had passed and Adrienne made no mention of this to anyone - although being close to Remus or seeing him left her with an uneasy feeling she couldn't quite explain. She tried to chalk it up to fear. It made sense with how her heart was racing every time the boy caught her staring at him, or how she trembled ever so slightly when they had to work together during a lesson. It did not, however, explain why she always hoped to bump into him.
Well, her wish was soon granted.
They were headed towards the Great Hall after a long session at the library. Chloe was in the midst of an animated retelling of a dragon sighting around the Hebrides as they descended the staircase, when Ada spotted the Marauders, as the four boys (James, Sirius, Peter, and Remus) liked to refer to themselves, around the end of it. She half-registered the boys being there when her friend turned to her: 'What do you think, Ada? Are there still Hebridean Blacks left in Scotland?' Adrienne felt her foot stuck - she forgot about the enchanted step and her left foot was now swallowed by it. By reflex, she tugged on it, only to then be sent flying ahead the last few steps. She tried to grab onto the handrail, but her hand slipped on the smooth marble as if to hasten her fall. She braced herself for the inevitable impact, yet she felt two hands on her waist, and her upper arms, instead of the cold, hard floor, were stopped by someone's chest.
Tumblr media
She carefully looked up but forgot all about her absolute humiliation when she saw Remus' face. It was in terrible shape, with a long scar stretching across his face and his eyes were still red. 'What happened to you…?' She blurted out, but, feeling the disapproval of her friends burning her sides, she adjusted her robe and added: '…freak.' Remus' surprised expression turned to a frown, but it was Sirius who jumped between the two of them: 'What did you say?' 'Khm, what, Black, are you deaf?' Ada did not want to repeat that word. It just felt… Wrong. 'I can make you to be,' the boy aimed his wand at her without missing a beat and Adrienne pulled out hers in return. All the students around them took a step back in shock (and unconcealed anticipation). Upon this, James also joined to support his friend. 'I wouldn't go around saying things like that if I were you.' 'Hey,' Chloe stepped to Ada's side and grabbed her shoulders. 'Cut it out, you two.' 'Take it easy, Avory, or you're gonna be next,' Sirius' grey eyes were burning. If looks could kill… 'What is the meaning of this?' Came the stern, croaky voice of McGonagall from the other end of the hallway. She hurried to the scene to dispel the onlookers (unsuccessfully). 'Black, Potter! Why is it always you two? Miss Macmillan!' 'Professor she stated it!' Claimed James. 'This is unacceptable! Lower your wands, all of you! Five points from Gryffindor and Slytherin and all of you get detention.' 'What? It's not fair!' Even Pettigrew joined in the commotion of pleas: 'But she was calling Remus…' 'Professor this is outrageous!' 'Yes, she should definitely…' 'Silence!' McGonagall said gravely. 'I don't want to hear about it. Potter, Black, in my office. Miss Macmillan, go to Professor Slughorn's office, and don't try to sneak off. I will get his account after dinner.'
Adrienne felt horrible as she walked away from the scene, even more so as she caught a glimpse of Lupin. He seemed down and would never look towards her again.
Her friends waited for her when she emerged from Slughorn's office after a detention was assigned to her. 'Miss Macmillan, I'm very disappointed in you!' Slughorn had said just minutes before, and he was baffled, especially once he heard the full tale from McGonagall. He did not go easy on her - he hoped to discourage one of his finest students from ever acting out like this. Without any background knowledge, it seemed disproportionate and her friends weren't shy to point that out: 'Are you serious? Cleaning the hippogriff stables for a week?' Chloe asked angrily. 'For calling that freak what he is?' 'Sush,' Ada gestured with her hands. 'Don't make it worse.' 'Serves him right with all those scars. He looks hideous,' Rachel added with a giggle. 'Rachel!' the brunette scolded her friend. 'What? You're already converted to freaks without starting detention?' She giggled with Chloe but Adrienne did not feel like laughing. How could she tell her friends that mentioning "freak" every time caused her shame and that she did in fact think that she deserved her detention? That she did kind of find Lupin's scars cute and him avoiding her after this incident hurt more than shovelling hippogriff poop for a week?
Part of these, she learnt later, but she knew it must be another secret she kept from her friends.

PART TWO
You forced your eyes open.
Pulling yourself up from the ground you glanced at your arms in confusion. You swore you saw your own hands turn to dust before fainting. You glanced around to take in your surroundings eyes widening in shock as you saw the hundreds of Wakandan's you fought beside minutes ago appearing out of dust. You stared speechless as you watched people materialise out of thin air, the dust forming into fingers, then a whole hand and eventually becoming a person who's mirroring your exact reaction.
You felt guilty about the first thought that came across your mind.
'Is Nat okay?' You panicked while rushing to look around, ignoring how you spent the last few years loathing her to hide your heartbreak.
You were an avenger since the beginning. The two of you were on the same team during the airport fight which wasn't surprising due to your history together. Despite the slight age difference between the two of you, your personalities worked well together which is why you got along well, so well in fact that those platonic feelings you thought you had for her developed into something more and somehow you found yourself in her bed many times in her arms with your bodies pressed against one another's, struggling to catch your breath, bliss written all over your face. Your legs were intertwined with hers as you embraced the warmth radiating off her. You refused to acknowledge the unspoken tension in the atmosphere due to the fear of speaking out about your feelings and end up ruining what you had. You couldn't help but let the insecurities build up as you gently caressed her cheek, her eyes met yours back in adoration, full of what could've been love.
But you knew she once looked at him in the same way.
"I love holding you in my arms моя любовь." She muttered, as she stroked your hair gently, you hummed in response, not trusting your own voice. What you both had felt right, you didn't want to ruin it, you didn't want to label what you had together due to the job you both have. Being an avenger doesn't exactly mean stability, anything could happen.
You remember the panic you felt when Ultron took her, the chance of losing her filled you with dread, but you also had faith. You knew how strong Natasha was. Your faith gave you strength and it kept you alive, Nat admired that about you.
The two of you fit together well, whether it was on the field or outside of the field. You could predict each other's moves and although telepathy isn't either of your powers, you know what the other was thinking. You made her better. You helped her wipe out the red in her ledger and when everyone's files was exposed to the globe you were right there by her side comforting her as she feared the reaction from everyone. You were there for her when nobody was and you stood by her side no matter what. Those feelings were reciprocated, you knew Natasha would've done anything for you.
She would even sacrifice herself for the possibility of you coming back.
Then the Accords happened and Nat betrayed the Accords, ending up on the run with Steve, Sam, Wanda and Vision. You were left alone at the compound with an injured Rhodey.
"How could you do this?" You spat out, voice full of hatred as you watched Natasha let Steve and Bucky get away. Your pistol shook in the palm of your hands, pointed directly at Natasha who lowered her own onto the ground, allowing herself to be defenceless.
"It's not that easy моя любовь, you out of all people should understand that." She explained, and you scoffed in response. The pet-name which once caused a flutter in your stomach now fuelling the fire that's building up. All the insecurities you felt during your relationship suddenly turned to hatred. You should've expected this, you should've expected that after all this time she would've chosen Steve over you.
"I guess you'll never change." You responded flatly, admitting defeat. You silently walked passed her and climbed out of the rubble that was created, allowing a wall to be in between the two of you not knowing you tore a piece of her heart as you did so.
That was two years ago.
You thought you'd never have to see her for a long time. You hoped you wouldn't have to see her. Clearly things never go the way you wanted it to go as you found yourself staring back at the person who once owned your heart.
"Well, you guys look like crap." Rhodey teased, wrapping the fellow avengers in his arms as you stood to the side, awkwardly watching the scene in front of you while fidgeting with your fingers. The atmosphere in the compound was comforting, it's been a long time since you've heard so much laughter in one room despite the war that's brewing.
Natasha, who was now blonde but as gorgeous as ever, hesitantly approached you. The two of you stared at each other, waiting for the other to make the next move.
"Romanoff." You nodded, greeting her before moving away to greet the other Avengers, missing the way she muttered the now bittersweet name she specifically picked you.
"моя любовь..."
Did she really love you? Or was it just for revenge? You believed that love blinded you, you managed to convince yourself that your love wasn't enough for her and that's why she left you. Your relationship with her died. It was over. You thought you buried it all, all your feelings. But you were wrong, when your eyes met her green eyes all those feelings came back to life, flowing through your veins.
After all this time you still loved her.
But your feelings for her weren't the only thing you couldn't bury.
Within an hour of reuniting with the Avengers, the team found themselves on the quinjet travelling to Wakanda. You wouldn't have said this out loud but you had faith that everything would be okay, Nat was finally by your side after all these years.
You felt as though nothing could go wrong.
That was a couple hours ago you estimated, you glance at Wanda who appeared a couple feet away from you the tears were evident on her face.
"Where is he?" Wanda cries out, clenching her fists, you saw the scarlet red energy glowing around her. You knew she must've been talking about Vsision who should've been on the ground next to her. "Wha- why does everything look different?" You realised, noticing the damages caused by the battle has disappeared. The grass was greener as ever. The corpses of the creatures you fought were no longer on the ground.
It looked as though the battle never took place.
You ran over to Wanda, helping her up from the ground when you hear someone call your name out. "That sounds like Sam." Wanda points out as the two of you held each other up.
"Wanda!" Sam called out.
"Come on, we gotta go! They need us! The fights not over yet!" He shouts from a distance, the two of you made your way to the direction you heard his voice come from, you saw all the superheroes surrounding him and a man in a red cloak. "What about Nat? Or Rhodey?" You questioned, looking for them in the crowd. You missed the sympathetic glance the man shot you before waving his hands up in the air, creating a yellow ring in the air that transformed into a portal.
"We're going to fight beside them right now." Sam confirms before flying through the portal.
The compound was completely destroyed. Your home was crumbling apart. Thor looked completely different, Tony had grey hair and Natasha was nowhere to be seen.
You wanted to finally tell her, tell her that you loved her with all of your heart.
You fought beside hundreds of Avengers that day, but you couldn't help searching for one specific Avenger. You ran over to Clint who was on the ground struggling to fight off a bunch of creatures, saving him within moments.
"Thanks kid." He pant, out of breath from all of the fighting. You smiled at him in response, reaching your hand out for him to take which he gratefully took, lifting himself up. "Have you bumped into Nat on the battlefield yet?" You asked, hopeful. There were hundreds of people fighting so you didn't expect to find her easily. The smile on Clint's face fell.
In that moment he relieved everything that happened moments ago. Flying to Vormir with Natasha, climbing the cliff with her, reminiscing about Budapest. And the way he witnessed her body hit the ground, the crack echoing so loudly he managed to hear it more than just once. He glanced down the cliff and saw her lifeless body faced towards his.
His closest friend. The person he trusted with his entire life. The person he named his son after. The Godmother of his kids.
Gone.
Just like that.
"I need to do this for her Clint, she's моя любовь." Nat whispered to him before smiling back at the oldest friend she had, pushing away from the cliff and inevitably falling to her death.
You found out what happened to Natasha, hours after.
The Avengers won, but at the cost of the lives of the people you cared the most about, the person you'd do anything for and the person who owned your heart the minute you met them. Clint broke the news to you, he felt as though you deserved to hear it from him.
"She loved you till the very end." He finished after explaining what happened on Vormir. You felt as though you couldn't breathe, like your soul was crushed and pulled away from you.
Natasha Romanoff was dead and there was nothing you could do about it.
She never got to hear that you felt the same towards her.
"I didn't think the ending to be so soon." You struggled to hold back a sob, holding the letter Clint gave you tightly in your arms. Scott somehow found a letter on the ground while trying to save Clint, it was slightly damp and covered in mud. But it was written for you in Natasha's handwriting.
You couldn't bring yourself to read the letter even nine days after the blip. You had to live in a world without her, a world where people drag her name through the mud even though she is the reason they're still standing. You adjust to a world without Natasha Romanoff and reading a letter she wrote for you months ago wouldn't help.
You regretted everything. You regret spending those last few years in anger, you should've stayed with her, you could've told her how much she meant to you. You could've told her you loved her, you could've held her in your arms once more. You would do anything to have her in your arms once again.
Sometimes it felt as though she was still there, laughing at something she saw on the TV. You always felt her presence around you after she passed away, it felt as though she never died. It felt as though a part of her lives through you.
You sat in the passenger seat of Wanda's car, staring at the Sword logo plastered on the side of the building, you could feel the letter in your back pocket, dying to be read. Wanda made her way back to the car, face flared in anger, tears threatening to spill.
"Wanda?" You called out as she got into the car, turning on the ignition but not pulling out of the car park. She sniffled quietly, wiping her eyes before glancing back to you. "I saw him." She responded, her eyes glancing to the folded paper on the backseat of the car, she could see the faint colour of red that was in the shape of a heart. "But they're not letting him have a funeral." You realised, looking back at your friend, heartbroken. "I figured at least one of them deserved a funeral, it's not fair. It's not fair that the world can just go on like nothing happened and we don't get to mourn the people we lost." Wanda rants, pulling out of the parking lot and beginning to drive.
"They both deserve a funeral." You agreed solemnly, remembering the fact that Natasha's body is at the bottom of a cliff in space in 2014.
"Where are we going now?" You asked, wanting to distract yourself from that thought. You felt as though you and Wanda were left to mourn your loved ones alone as the rest of the avengers scattered across the country.
"To the only thing I have left of him."
The two of you sat in silence as Wanda drove, you stared at the shrubbery outside the window before closing your eyes and resting your head on the window, allowing yourself to drift off.
It felt like it was only seconds later when you felt the car turn harshly, you opened your eyes and glanced around in confusion when you saw that you pulled into a quaint town, you had only just missed the town sign plastered with the words "West View." You watched the pedestrians walking by, noticing how some of them sat on their own with no one to comfort them similarly to you and Wanda.
The two of you pulled up to a plot of land with the foundation of a house on the ground, it looked at though the house never had the chance to get completed.
"Stay in the car, I won't take long." Wanda reassured you before reaching towards the back of the car to grab the folded up sheet of paper and getting out of the car. You nodded, staring at the built house next to the plot of land.
Your mind wanders as you stare at the home. You think about Natasha. You think about the future you could've had with her, living together in a quaint home like the one in front of you. No stress about being an avenger, just the two of you and your family. You softly smile as you imagine Natasha's reaction to wanting to adopt 5 cats, knowing she was more of cat person. You imagine holding her hand while walking down the street and watching movies with her in your shared bed. You wanting to stay in for the day and watch movies to ignore the real world outside and her letting you.
You think about what could've been.
A heart wrenching scream snaps you out of your thoughts, you rush out of the car and look for Wanda but is blinded by a scarlet red light that knocks you unconscious.
Your eyes open on command.
The room you stood in was black and white. It was a nicely decorated living room with a dining room connected to it, you couldn't pinpoint which decade the interior was from, too preoccupied by the woman standing in front of you.
Although the lack of colour in them, you could recognise those eyes from anywhere, that smile that you've wished to see was right in front of you. The dress she wore matched the decade and decor of the room, her hair curled up neatly. Natasha stood in front of you, reaching her hand out towards you waiting for you to take it.
You hesitantly reach out towards her, happiness flooding your emotions. She pulls you closer to her, welcoming you into a hug. The palm of her hands are warm as they rested on your back, you could feel her heartbeat as you laid your head on her chest, melting in her arms.
"Welcome home моя любовь."

Imagine...
Tumblr media
Coming back home was nice to say the least. Twisted Wonderland had its charms and quirks for sure, but coming back was something all on its own. No one knew how, but (y/n) appeared out of the blue, and her parents couldn't have been happier. Tears were shed and cries of joy echoed throught the night as ther child came back to them, their sweet, long lost child for whom they thought was dead. For the next few days life was was pure bliss as (y/n) finally came in to contact her old friends, both online and in the real world. Summer was steadily approaching which meant that (y/n) could laze around all day long, no more tiresome work for her! No more feeding fire faries, no more dealing with dark magic or any magical shenanigans of the sorts - it was just her in her peacful room.
As relaxing as it was though, (y/n)'s thoughts couldn't help but to drift back to Twisted Wonderland all of the friends she had made. How were Ace and Deuce doing? Jack, Epel? Malleus?
....
Things always got sour the moment she pitcured the dark faes face because when she did the face of his chaperone popped up instantly. Lilia never failed to intimidate the girl no matter how friendly his approach was. Upon meeting him she found Lilia a bit odd but he was fun, downright cute even. He was always by her side, guiding her and being her emotional support through tough times, her smooth voice always laced with sweetness that (y/n) never knew was reserved solely for her. Lilia would start appearing out of nowhere, either in front of her or even on the feeling if he felt like it. But again, (y/n) never really questioned it though, Lilia did have a rather eccentric reputation on campus so it wasn't out of character for him. Oh how she cursed herself right now, for not recognizing the red flags when she should have. Clutching the sheets beneath her she pressed her face against the soft pillow, her bitter tears staining the soft fabric. How stupid she was, falling for Lilia's words like that. She thought that she could trust him, he promised that he would never hurt her. The image of Lilia's smiling face flashed through her mind as she recalled the monstrous grin on his face. One evening he confessed, he confessed everything he had done and his true emotions and intentions. He was the one who was hurting her friends, he was the one who was silently shattering her life to bits. And as he held her in his arms, Lilia still promised to protect her and that he indeed kept his word from before.
The worst part was - he was right. Lilia had indeed kep his word, no harm came (y/n)'s way, only her loved ones were there to suffer. It was pointless to run or hide, Lilia would find her eventually. She came to terms to it but even so still refused to give up, and that is what Lilia loved the most about her. That persistence, that hot blooded stubbornness only the youth could possess, Lilia adored it. He'd let (y/n) play her game, he could always track her and bring her to back to him.
What Lilia did not predict however was the Mirror of Darkness sending (y/n) back home.
Just like that, his beloved was suddenly out of his reach as panic spread like wildfire across the school. What happened to the Perfect?! Was the Perfect okay?! These questions surrounded Lilia each and every day and every new question was like a stab in the heart to him. Silver checked up on Lilia on a daily basis but the vice dorm leader insisted that he was fine with that usual smile of his.
He was not fine.
He was never going to be fine.
Lilia is worried beyond belief and there was nothing to calm him down. He wore a mask of smiles and smirks every day to class but his close companions knew better. They knew of his late night ventures in to the woods to gather ingredients, they knew that Lilia pestered the Mirror of Darkness itself endlessly to give Lilia (y/n)'s exact location but the mirror never complied.
(y/n) had quite literally, disappeared off the face of the Earth.
But even among the helplessness and the ashes of their friendship, against all odds Lilia had prevailed.
He had tracked down (y/n), but in the most unusual way possible.
♡♡♡
The sleepless night was unkind towards (y/n) as she made her way towards the bathroom, already wanting the day to be over while it bearly just begun. Turning on the tap the washed her face diligently as she took in the calming silence around her, the peeks of the morning sun just bearly shining through the curtains.
And like a sudden tidal wave, the sense of being watched overcame (y/n) like never before.
She... She didn't know how to feel, what she was even feeling to begin with. Turning off the tap she looked around but the only sources of noise was the clock ticking outside the door. The calmness of the silence soon became unbearable as (y/n) looked at her reflection against the bathroom mirror, her sleepy gaze staring right back at her. Reaching out towards the mirror she had the strange urge to touch it, as if to confirm to what she was looking at was real. Her fingers pressed themselves gently against the glass as (y/n) let out a sigh, her tense shoulders finally relaxing. The intense feeling of being watched was nearly forgotten once (y/n) lowered her hand from the mirror.
Key word nearly.
Immediately a sudden but sharp headache followed suit as the world around (y/n) started to spin, her vision engulfed with random little black spots. It was hard to stand, let alone breathe! Pressing herself against the sink (y/n) looked at the mirror once more but the sight before her shook her to the core.
Her reflection was not her own.
She knew for a fact that she was panting, probably even red in the face as she struggled to comprehend the sight before her. Her reflection had a smirk as the mirror around it slowly shattered, slowly revealing the background behind it. The familar dark purple hallway was in sight as green flames roared in the background, her smirking reflection being replaced with the person she thought she had escaped for good.
In its place stood Lilia Vanrouge, his arms crossed and the smug grin not leaving his face. Her vision became blurry with tears as she took a few steps back, hitting the wall behind her. Nausea filled her stomach as she started to cough violently, small droplets of blood dripping out of her mouth. Collapsing on her feet to the ground she quickly lost balance as her ability to speak was seemingly taken away from her. Broken sobs echoed throught the small bathroom as shadows encircled (y/n)'s shaking form, the whispers of pure menace intruding the young girls heart.
"You thought you got away didn't you, my lamb...?"
"I am a man of my word my beloved - I promised to keep you safe from any and all harm in the universe. And that promise extends to your own as well."
The voice belonged to no one but Lilia himself. You could hear the self satisfaction in his honey laced words, a tad bit of anger just bearly recognizable. She felt a pair of cold hands wrap themselvs around her, sharp teeth nibbling on her neck as Lilia dragged her through the makeshift portal he had made. (y/n)'s body was numb with fear as she felt the flames tingling around her and the few shards of the glass that were still stuck on her mirror pricked her delicate skin. All she could do was wince in pain as Lilia's gloved hand covered her mouth in order to silence her screams. She thought she was safe, she finally got out of Hell only to be literally dragged back in to it.
Lilia really was a cruel person.
Looking back once more, Lilia closed the small portal for good as he placed (y/n) on the ground, her body twiching from the pain as he hushed her. The glint in his blood red eyes was overwhelming as his grip tightened further and further until (y/n) fell. unconscious.
There was nothing that could get in Lilia's way, not even Death itself. He was ready to overcome challenges he didn't even know existed, but that is what one does when he's in love, no?
Dedicating this to my wife, @josuke8. You are such a crackhead and a sweetheart, please don't ever change. Happy birthday, Yue! 💘💋

Two-Faced Jewel: Session 10
Connections
Tumblr media
A half-elf conwoman (and the moth tasked with keeping her out of trouble) travel the Jewel in search of, uh, whatever a fashionable accessory is pointing them at. [Campaign log]
Last time, the party arrived in Cauterdale, the heavily-fortified port city at war with nature. They arrived in search of members of the Deathseekers' Guild- the organization of professional adventurers and monster-hunters that likes to be very up-front about its mortality rate- to handle a dragon problem that they're personally a little underleveled for.
While Looseleaf had a fateful encounter with the Plot at the Temple of Andra, Saelhen and Oyobi were headed to the barracks of the city guard, to speak to "Mags", the guard on duty when the local Deathseekers were last seen leaving town. And there...
You remember Medd Cutter, right? Highly-memorable Medd Cutter, the NPC who got oneshot by a T-rex and whose life the party saved? Well, to spite Rex... whatever his last name was, the pro-patria-mori asshole guard captain guy, Saelhen has decided that she's going to start spreading the word of Medd's heroism.
Oyobi, unfortunately, is bent on spreading the word of her own extremely ill-advised heroism, and so the two are having some sort of hype-off as they make their way into the barracks and effortlessly charm their way past the guards to where their quarry is posted.
Tumblr media
These two are manning some sort of huge brass contraption, bristling with lenses and dials. One of them is a yuan-ti pureblood- which there are an unusual number of in the city guard, compared to the general population. Weird. Saelhen politely introduces herself, and Verity Truescale refers them to Magnaranth aka Mags, the loxodon who last saw the Deathseekers leave town.
Mags doesn't have a huge amount to tell them- the Deathseekers, evidently, were going hunting, out east somewhere. They brought a lot of torches, so apparently they were headed somewhere dark? Underground, maybe? They were pretty cagey about what exactly they were going out to do. Still, Mags can provide the names and addresses of the Deathseekers in question.
...And Verity, checking the instruments, notices that something is wrong with the tides- apparently something large is disturbing the waters, but they can't quite pinpoint what- it's not any of the usual suspects, which include things by the name of "Darkie" or "Unnessie". Ominous!
After that, the party meets up at the local Temple of Iska, their designated rendezvous point. They catch each other up on their gains, and decide... well, the Deathseekers are going to be back within a couple days, so they'll just wait for them in town and get going with them, to make sure things in Barley and Wheat go smoothly.
Of course, the question then is "where do we stay?"
Options aren't great- Cauterdale is crowded, and the B&B market is incredibly shitty. The best lodging is on Eman's Knee, the island just off the coast of Cauterdale, but getting the ferry over there is expensive, and resort lodging on a tropical island is also expensive.
Tumblr media
That- you can't just- I mean, just because- I'm- I'm allowed to be predictable, okay???
(And anyway, it's Corolos where I ended up doing a murder mystery.)
So, Looseleaf gets a 24 investigating the town's B&B market, and finds a pretty good place! It's a weapons shop Saelhen noticed earlier, which is renting out rooms. The place has a huge fence topped with spikes, so they probably won't even get robbed!
Aria of War, as it happens, is run by an elderly yet ripped-as-hell tabaxi man, who Saelhen... vaguely recognizes.
Tumblr media
Benedict I. (GM): So, this shopkeeper's coat is familiar to you. It's definitely not the same person, but you once knew a girl in Timber Towers named Toothbrush, with almost the exact same coat. Could be a relative! Saelhen du Fishercrown: Yeah, tabaxi have a lot of coat variation; it's not a safe bet that they're related, but Saelhen is willing to go out on a limb with him. "Good evening, sir, and I'm sorry to bother you, but I felt I had to ask..." Fish Especially: "No discounts." Saelhen du Fishercrown: "Do you have any relation to a..." Was Toothbrush her real name? Benedict I. (GM): As far as you know! Tabaxi have weird names. Saelhen du Fishercrown: "Toothbrush?" Fish Especially: He looks surprised. "Hold on, you know Toothbrush?" Saelhen du Fishercrown: "...I knew I knew that speckle pattern." Saelhen smiles widely and without guile. "I met her in Timber Towers a while back. She played the violin." "More specifically, she couldn't play the violin, but she always failed very effectively." Fish Especially: "I'll be! Her theatre troupe doing all right for itself, then?" "Even with the noise of that awful thing?" "I never know what to think when she writes those letters..." Saelhen du Fishercrown: "Last I saw of them, they were doing pretty well for themselves! To be honest, I did a stint with them for a bit, they wanted advice on a traditional elven piece..." Saelhen leans in on her elbows. "Oh, she mangled it, but she compensated with charm and that one face. Her confident face, you know the one, where you think she's so confident that maybe it's supposed to sound like that?" Fish Especially: He laughs. "You do know my girl!" "She hasn't written in- I think a year, now. How's she been?" Saelhen du Fishercrown: "Oh, it's been so long, I'm barely an authority by now -- but I remember she was talking about taking classes in -- what was it..." "...oh, where are my manners -- I'm Saelhen du Fishercrown, it's a pleasure." Saelhen reaches out for a very unelven handshake.
That she says this is notable for one big reason: this is the first time she's used her real name, and not "Lady Noeru de la Surplus". Nobody else in the party has heard this before!
It's also notable because according to Fish Especially, Toothbrush thought Saelhen was dead- and he's going to let her know otherwise.
Anyway, the deal for rooms goes through without incident, and the night also goes without incident! As is entirely normal, they hear Vayen in the halls making some sort of attempt to sneak into Saelhen's room in the night... and this time, sighing and going "never mind" without even attempting to pick the lock for some reason.
In the morning... Looseleaf grills Saelhen on the name thing, and she confesses the truth of the matter to the whole party- who take it fairly well.
Tumblr media
After team bonding, the party heads to the Temple of Andra to check in and see if the Deathseekers have showed up. And by the stablehand's account, they have- or at least, a bunch of weird old people showed up to meet with Gabbro.
Gabbro seems surprised to see them- he was under the impression that they'd leave the matter to them. The further involvement of the party should be unnecessary, right...?
Looseleaf: "Oh, yeah, I was going to let you know we were staying in town and ask for you to let us know when the deathseekers showed up, but, uh, judging by that meeting we interrupted, they're already back and right here." Gabbro: "That is correct," he says, as the stablehand leaves. "I was just briefing them on the mission, you see." "The situation is well in hand, so you needn't concern yourselves with it any longer." "That pesky dragon shouldn't be an issue." Looseleaf: "W-well, uh. I was, uh, we were, kiiiinda hoping to travel with you back to the dragon's tower." "I mean, it's our quest, so, it'd be nice to, for us to see it happening so we can be sure of it, y'know?" Gabbro: He looks somewhat taken aback. "That... seems... risky, don't you think?" "To bring along... certain... people?" Looseleaf: "We're going to stay very very far away from the action! We're not that dumb!" Saelhen du Fishercrown: "...I assure you that we have no intention of fighting the dragon ourselves, sir." Gabbro: "Ah, yes, of course not..." "However..." He gives Looseleaf a pleading look. Saelhen du Fishercrown: "And there are... certain persons in the nearby town, whose safety I would like to check up on. Personally." Looseleaf: He doesn't seem to want people witnessing the fight? It could be explicable through just, him being worried we'll get hurt. But it could also be, 'their deathseekers fight with methods that Orluthe in particular should not be allowed to witness.' Gabbro: "Ah, well, if that's the case... if you don't mean to get involved with the Deathseekers and their work..." Looseleaf: "We're not going to- we don't want any claim to the loot in the tower either, if that's a problem! Everything in the tower is you and your group's prerogative to deal with however we like."
Gabbro seems... put slightly more at ease, and decides to introduce the group to the ones who'll be their traveling companions shortly- the Cauterdale Deathseekers.
Tumblr media
In order:
Doon Softbreeze, half-halfling rogue and all-around Grunkle Stan-type, friendliest with the party.
Kevin Softbreeze, Doon's soft-spoken herbalist husband and that's it, probably, just a gardener.
John Human, an extremely decrepit extremely human man who seems to make weird buzzing sounds when he speaks, as if with mouthparts instead of human lips.
Ryuusatsu Takuma, totally silent elf (not present at this meeting with Gabbro) who probably just doesn't like talking, is all.
Lady Fidelia Greatholder, heavily-armored and heavily-everything human noblewoman (also not present at this meeting), who- well, she shows up next session.
Gabbro makes a point of making clear to those present that Orluthe, who they'll be traveling with, is a cleric of Diamode- apparently they need to know this for some reason!
Doon's pretty friendly with the party, and offers to take on their job pro-bono- on the basis that, c'mon, if they could actually afford them, they wouldn't be knocking on their door for help. So it looks like they've enlisted some highly-capable dragonslayers with no ulterior motives! Fantastic.
Next time: The road back to Barley, and the tying up of a few loose ends in town. Saelhen needs to get her kimono back!

In Port Charles, New York, there was never a large amount of time without someone having a near death experience, death, or traumatic event.
Michael and Willow had been pretty fortunate, ever since they got married the only bad thing that had happened was Wiley being kidnapped and they had all recovered from that, mainly. Granted, they still checked on him twice a night, but it didn't matter. Everyone was healing and the pair were trying desperately to tell each other what they felt without actually saying the words.
So it seemed it was time for them to deal with a traumatic event, according to whatever controls what happens with people in this town.
Whatever controls these people's lives decides to make them get caught up in a gunfight, where Willow was about to get shot. She had been kidnapped hours before and was being used as a pawn in a scam Cyrus had concocted against Sonny. He knew Sonny cared about Michael's family, but that he couldn't get Michael himself or he'd be killed.
When Jason and Sonny fired their guns at Cyrus and his guys, they'd fired back at a tied up, scared Willow. Michael jumped in front of them, his own gun firing as he was shot in the chest. The bullet just grazed Willow, and though she was in intense pain, the worst she'd ever felt, her first concern was Michael. He needed medical attention immediately, or else he'd die.
That brings us to the present, where Willow got shot in the shoulder and Michael's still in surgery to try and save his life. When they'd had her sign something earlier for it, a medical form she didn't know quite the details of, it had really set in. Michael could be dead because he was trying to save her life. Willow's bullet had been a through and through wound; they were able to get her all taken care of quickly. She's bandaged and traumatized, but fine. Michael, on the other hand, could be bleeding out on an operating table for all she knows. He got shot in the chest and the doctors think it's in an artery.
There are no words to describe how she felt, finding out that her husband had a large chance of death. Cyrus, stupid Cyrus and his mob games he had to play with Sonny. Stupid, stupid Sonny. If he wasn't in the damn mob, Willow never would've been kidnapped and Michael never would've been shot. He wouldn't be fighting for his life on an operating table right now, trying not to die. This was Sonny's fault as much as it was Cyrus's.
Sonny enters her room cautiously. "Willow, I'm so sorry you got caught up in all this. You never should have been involved in this situation in the first place and I have no clue why you were even on Cyrus's radar in the first place."
"I think that you should know damn well why I was shot, Sonny! The same reason Michael was, because you're in some territory fight with him. You're lucky Carly didn't get shot or another innocent bystander in your fight with him. Your mob war is fine, but I don't want anything to do with it. I married Michael, and I knew that it meant I was marrying into a mob family with you being his dad and all, but I didn't expect this! Your son is fighting for his life on an operating table right now because of you! I got shot because of you! My son could be in danger or on the radar of a known mobster right now because of you and your actions!" Willow angrily shouts at him.
The mobster is confused before he responds, "Don't you think I know that, Willow? Don't you think I feel terrible about my son having to fight for his life because of me again? I'm not a monster, despite you apparently seeing me as one. This life- it's not what I ever thought my life would be. In some ways, it's so much better, but in others, it's terrible. I don't know how you got to be involved in this, or if Wiley's on their radar, but my guys will take care of it."
"Take care of it meaning you're going to put us on house arrest like you did your entire family because you can't control the mob wars you start? Or maybe we'll have a guard following us everywhere we go like Joss. I'm sure I could get some pointers from her about how to live your life with a guard following you," she fires back, heart racing and angry.
"My family means everything to me. I-I would never do something that I thought could put my family in danger. I'm having one of my guys check right now and see if Wiley's on their radar. They're gone, the bad guys. No one is hurting any of you because you're all good people. Michael's the former head of ELQ and lives at the Quartermaine mansion, so I don't know if he was on their radar because of his last name, but I also don't know why you're the one they took. If they wanted to kidnap someone, Michael probably would've been easier to than you were," Sonny ponders, clearly apologetic about his actions.
Thinking for a moment, Willow breathes deeply, wincing slightly. "I'm sorry I blew up, but I'm anxious right now. I mean, my husband is on the operating table. Not exactly a great thing for me, or Wiley. I also got shot, which isn't exactly a fun experience. Add in the kidnapping, I'm pretty sure that there's such a high amount of adrenaline in my system right now I could be having a panic attack."
Jason enters the room with Sam and Dante. "How you holding up?"
"Shot, kidnapped, angry, scared, traumatized. I'm wondering, why did they pick to come after me? Sure, Cyrus and all them know I'm married to Michael, that's not old news, but if they wanted to get mad at Sonny, why not take one of his kids?" Willow asks, trying to distract herself from the fact that her husband could be bleeding out right now and that she's in a hospital bed with a gun wound.
"Well, Michael and I are adults. We've dealt with this stuff before, it'd be harder to just kidnap us. Avery is at Ava's, and they don't want to mess with Julian or Nikolas. Donna's got so much security around her, it'd be near impossible to, and Kristina would make an absolutely terrible hostage. Joss has a guard following her, and would also be a bad hostage. All of us wouldn't be good targets to kidnap, and so there could be the argument he could have taken one of Jason's kids, but they're all innocent in everything and Jason would go ballistic. It just wouldn't make sense. You, however, are new to this life, married to a Corinthos, have a child with one, and don't really seem like you've been kidnapped before," Dante explains.
"So I was the easiest target for them to take, pretty much?" Willow asks and they nod.
Sam speaks up now, "It makes sense that if they wanted Michael, they'd take you. Wiley's a bad target, considering that there's so much energy put into making sure he's okay at all times. You're his wife and he loves you, so they want to lure him in, they take you. Tell him exactly where to find you, exactly what to do to get you back. Only thing is, they didn't count on Sonny and Jason being there too. So they saw them and got scared. Shot at you since you were still tied up and Michael, being Michael, saved you. They wanted to hurt Sonny and the best way to do that is by hurting his family. You were the easiest target and collateral damage."
Willow sighs, angry and hurt. "So in an effort to hurt Sonny and Jason, they wanted to hurt Michael. They knew that they couldn't take him, so they take me instead and make him come get me and try to kill us both?"
"These people run off of trying to find a soft spot. This one matched for both of them. Carly was probably their second choice, except she's an absolutely terrible hostage and they know it would've been too obvious. If they could kill you and Michael, Sonny lets down his guard because he's grieving and probably raising Wiley. I'm grieving, everyone involved in the business is grieving. They can take over Port Charles. It's unfair and cruel, but true," Jason summarizes to her.
Portia comes into the room then, looking somber. "Is he okay? What-what's happening with Michael?" Willow asks immediately, frantic for news on her husband.
"Willow, the bullet that hit Michael was in one of his arteries. We were able to remove the bullet, but we don't know if he'll survive. The surgery was intense, and the damage he took to his heart was as well. His body, like yours, has faced a huge trauma, but since his was to his heart, we're not comfortable yet with anything," the doctor tells her and the brunette bursts into tears. It's like her heart is slowly cracking and they're dragging out what's happening.
"Portia, just tell it to us straight: What are the odds?" Jason asks, face emotionless.
"Michael has a 50% chance of survival," Portia admits. "The next 24 to 48 hours are going to be crucial to getting more exact odds. Right now, he's not allowed any visitors, but we will be changing that in a few hours. I'm so sorry I don't have better news."
Those are the words it takes for everyone to be crying. Jason, in a rare showing of emotion, looks like he's going to break down. Sam's face says it all: She's heartbroken. Michael's practically a son to the both of them, especially Jason. But Sonny, his face is the truly heartbreaking one. He breaks down right then and there, sitting on the floor of the room and crying. Dante looks shocked, like he's not processing this. "What the hell?" He asks. "Dad, what the hell is it with you and killing my brothers? First Morgan, now Michael?"
"Dante, your brother is still alive. He is in critical condition, but alive. The odds of survival will likely increase after I go to check on him in a few hours," Portia calmly explains as Carly runs into the room, crying.
Carly runs to the space in between Jason and Sonny and asks, "What's wrong with my baby? Why won't they let me see him? Is he alive?"
"Yes, Michael is alive. He was shot in the chest and it got in an artery. The surgical team was able to save him, though he is in critical condition with what I'm predicting is a 50% chance of survival. He will be allowed visitors in a few hours," Portia spiels, everyone understanding it more now and the room more tearful than before. "Carly, if you want, Joss and Dev are more than welcome to stay with Trina and I for the next few days, since I know you and Sonny will be here, and I presume Jax will be as well."
"Thank you, Portia. That would be great if it's not too much trouble," Carly thanks her, tears still streaming down her face.
"Of course," Portia smiles before leaving the room. "Jason, that offer extends to Danny and Scout too."
"That's nice, but they're gonna be staying with Elizabeth and her boys. Thank you for offering," he says solemnly, tears building up in his eyes.
The room has an aura of sadness as everyone processes the information they've been given. Michael has a 50% chance of dying, and a 50% chance of surviving. All because of Sonny's stupid fight with Cyrus. Despite what she may have said, Willow is still beyond upset with Sonny, as is Dante.
"Sonny, you caused this. Not Cyrus, you. By starting that stupid fight with him, you put all of our lives on the line. Now, Michael's fighting for his life in a hospital bed and Willow's been shot too! The only reason we're in this situation is you and your stupid mob war. You're lucky I'm not PCPD anymore, or I'd arrest you for all of your illegal activities and put you behind bars because none of us deserve to have this be our lives!" Dante shouts at his father, angry and needing someone to blame but truthful.
"I know that, Dante! I know that I'm the reason my son could die. I'm the reason Morgan did too, I know. I'm so sorry, Willow, that you got caught up in this because they wanted Michael," Sonny tearfully tells his oldest son.
Willow takes a deep breath, calming her sobs. "I am angry at you, but I know that it's Cyrus's fault I got kidnapped and that Michael and I got shot. Why I was kidnapped, I still don't fully understand, but I can see how badly you feel about this. So I accept your apology, but I can't forgive you for this yet."
Dante breathes, trying to calm himself, as he says, "They took you because Michael loves you and they wanted him to get to Sonny. It's stupid and rude, but the truth."
Love? That four letter word hadn't been said by either of them yet; they were getting annulled for God's sakes!
That would probably be getting put off indefinitely while Willow and him were recovering from their gun shot wounds. It would be easier on everyone because Monica would be there if something bad happened to either of them and Wiley wouldn't have to move around or anything.
Noticing her silence, Sam asks, "You didn't know that?"
"Is it that obvious?" Willow asks, noting that the pain of the wound is starting to go down.
"Yeah," Dante laughs. "It's really obvious. Stupidly obvious, to be honest. You two, I presume, have been in love with each other for at least a few months by now. It's just that neither one of you wants to say it because you're scared you'll ruin your friendship somehow or whatever."
There's a quiet laughter in the room for a few moments before the air turns somber again and tears come back full force. It's evident that all of them are in pain, emotionally and, for Willow, physically.
Several hours later, Willow's entire hospital room is full of people. Maxie, Spinelli, Anna, Finn, Monica, Bobbie, Brook Lynn, Ned, Jax, Joss, Dev, Cam, Elizabeth, Franco, Nina, Lulu, Lucy, even Sasha and Chase are there. A lot of people know Michael, and a lot of them care a lot about him. It warms Willow's heart to see that, to know that the man she loves has so many people who love him and care about him.
Portia comes in the crowded room with Trina, who envelopes Joss in a hug. "Michael can have guests now," Portia tells them, "but only one at a time. He may still be a bit woozy from the anesthesia, if he's even awake. He will likely be confused somewhat and drifting in and out of sleep. Don't talk about anything serious with him, or he'll get more confused."
As she leaves the room, Joss says, "I think Willow should go first. If there's anyone Michael would want to see first, I think it would be her."
Everyone nods their agreement and Elizabeth goes to get Willow a wheelchair. Sitting in the chair is fine, standing and walking isn't. She already hates how much this is slowing her down, considering that she's always been so quick to go and do things. This is pretty much just a shitty situation.
Elizabeth comes back, wheelchair in tow, and Willow moves to get in it, wincing in pain but ignoring that. She's got a husband to see. "You know," she jokes, "Michael and I never had a honeymoon. I guess this is the closest we'll get before our annulment."
"If I hear one more word about that annulment," Carly threatens and Monica agrees.
"I'm not letting you two make this decision, no annulment!" Dante smiles and everyone laughs for a minute except Chase and Sasha, but it's obvious that they mean it.
"Our fans grow," Willow chuckles as Elizabeth wheels her into Michael's room, which isn't far from her own.
"For what it's worth, and not that my opinion has anything to do with your marriage to Michael because it doesn't, you two do make a very good couple in a way I don't think we've seen around here in a while. Again, not my spot, but still, I think you two have some talking to do before you agree to end your marriage," Elizabeth tells her. "Count me as a fan."
Chuckling, the pair go into Michael's room, where the energy is instantly changed to more of a sad, somber energy. After all, he is in a hospital bed, hooked up to a lot of tubes and machines. Willow was lucky, her IV could go with her. Michael's setup is much more complicated.
Willow's wheeled up to his bed before Elizabeth leaves, telling her to just text someone when she needs to get wheeled away again. It's evident Elizabeth can't stand to be in the room much longer.
When she leaves, tears start streaming down Willow's face. This is more difficult than she thought it would be, though she was trying to joke her way through it. Her heart aches seeing him like this, the man she married fighting for his life in a hospital bed. It's heartbreaking, knowing that she's got a chance of him not making it, that he'll die on her. She knows he'll fight like hell to stop it, but at the end of the day, you can't always get what you want.
It's this thought that makes her want to say what she's been feeling, confess like she's in some movie or something. The words have been on her mind for weeks, but she couldn't bring herself to say them because there was a chance he didn't feel the same.
Opening her mouth to speak, Willow notes that only a sob comes out. It's not a pretty sound by any means, if anything it's an ugly one, but it's okay because Michael's still alive. "This, what I feel for you, it's hard to put into words but I'm going to give it my best shot. I fell for you because you're you. That makes no sense, I know, but that's why I fell for you. I fell for you because you're so unapologetically yourself, even when it's causing an issue. I fell for you because I want the whole thing, the stupid little fights and the joking, the love that's always there. I fell for you because when I look into your eyes, I stop thinking. I fell for you because that look you give me, that keeps me up at night trying to figure out what it means. When we kissed, I can still feel it when I go to sleep at night. You, without my knowledge, walked into my heart and just decided to get comfy. Falling in love with you was beyond my control, but I'm okay with it. This- falling for you has been the scariest thing in my life because I'm giving you the power to destroy me. You're destroying me, not knowing if you'll make it or not. It breaks my heart, knowing you could die because of me. I couldn't deal with it if you die. So hang on long enough for us to watch movies while eating a pizza we just bought in a Walmart. Hang on long enough to have stupid pillow fights with me in bed at three am because Wiley's starting school tomorrow and we can't fall asleep. Do it for me, do it for him. Do that for us. I love you, Michael, and I don't see that ending so please, just wake up."
By the end of her beautiful proclamation, Willow's full on crying. Tears are streaming down her cheeks and her heart is broken. Even though he's not dead, Willow just spilled her heart to him. It could be the last thing she ever says to him when he's alive, that she loves him. That thought terrifies her, that he could die and never fully know if he knows she loves him.
"I don't know what it is, but somehow, you can always make me smile even when I'm feeling the worst I've ever felt in my life. Without me even thinking, I can see a future with you. A future full of a couple more kids and happiness. Don't get me wrong, I know romance isn't always happily ever after. But still, I know loving someone the way I love you is so uncommon, especially so quickly. I love you, and I'm going to tell you that because it's true. You deserve to know the truth, and simply put, that's the truth. Those three words that terrified me have been so common in my brain thinking of you. And telling you, it makes me feel relieved. Because you deserve to know these things. At the end of the day, you deserve to know I love you," Willow tearfully tells him. "So you can't die on me, okay? I love you and we haven't even started our story yet, so you've got to survive so we can have our happy ending."
No response from Michael, nothing. His vitals are the same and he looks the exact same too, still great but wounded. He looks frail, lying in that hospital bed.
Maybe her words can't save him. Maybe he's already gone, already left her. It's sad to think about and makes her breakdown, sobs coming from her mouth with tears so plentiful she can't even see anything. She takes his hand, holding it in hers. This, this is the moment in all those movies where he would squeeze her hand, wake up.
Life isn't a move though, she realizes, as she continues speaking. "I get it if you're already gone and your heart's still beating, but selfishly, I want you to wake up. I want you to wake up and we can stop the annulment, fall even more in love. Selfishly, I want a huge love story where we're together for so long that people ask if we're still together and wonder how we are because we've been together so long."
"And so you have to be okay, you have to wake up from this, you have to. I get it if you don't know entirely, or if you don't fully want to, but Wiley and I need you to. Everyone here, and everyone in the waiting room, everyone crowded in my room needs you to wake up. I love you," Willow tearfully reminds him.
She pulls out her phone and texts Elizabeth she's okay to leave the room, that someone else can come in, and within a minute, Carly's in there, staring at her son, equally as heartbroken, if not more, as Willow is. Carly's been through this before; Michael was in a coma for a year and a half at one point. That doesn't mean it's less heartbreaking or easier; if anything, the opposite is true.
"I'm so sorry this is happening to you," Willow says to Carly. "I can't even imagine what you're going through."
"Thank you. I know exactly what you're going through, Willow. Sonny and Jason have been through this enough, I know just how bad it hurts and how worried you are. But Michael's strong, he'll survive this. I have faith he will survive long enough for you both to have a happy family and me to have more grandbabies. Don't even try to say that I'm wrong, because he loves you as well," Carly smiles sadly at her, tears still streaming down her face.
Willow can't help the smile on her face when she hears that. "It's good to know someone's sure of that, because I'm sure as hell not."
Carly laughs, incredulous. "How do you not see it, Willow? He's told me, flat out, that he loves you. It's so obvious that you two love each other that the fact you're both denying it or not thinking about your love for each other is getting annoying."
"I don't know. I guess I just didn't think he loved me back, but I'm going to wait for Elizabeth."
Elizabeth walks in and wheels a teary eyed Willow back to her room. "I take it that he's not up yet?"
"Nope, he's still not up. I spilled my guts to him and he's still asleep or whatever he's doing," Willow explains to her, showing off her lack of medical knowledge.
"Well, I'm sure he'll be up in a few hours, Willow. This is Michael we're talking about, he'll pull through. He always does."
When she says that, the pair have reached the room, which is still crowded with people. Willow gets herself back in bed, despite the pain that causes. After all, it's not like she's going to die getting in bed.
More time passes, and everyone goes into Michael's room until everyone's visited and he's still unconscious. It's heartbreaking, knowing that the longer he takes to wake up, the lower his chances of survival are. Medical odds are terrible sometimes.
Jason goes back into Michael's room, noting that his phone was left there on accident. Willow nods her head, pretending she heard what he said.
When he comes back, there's a huge smile on his face very unlike what you have happen when you find your phone. "Michael's awake," he says.
Tears of sadness are replaced with tears of joy as the room gets a much happier energy. "Can I go see him?" Willow asks, already getting out of bed and into the wheelchair that has been left at her bedside.
"He's asking for you," Jason says, hugging Sam tight to him.
Willow smiles widely as Dante pushes her down the hall. "Please let this make you two say how you feel about each other," he smirks.
"I already have, but I don't know if he heard it," Willow smiles at him.
"Well, sister in law and cousin in law in a completely unconvoluted way, I think he did and know he feels the same so if you two aren't together by the end of this, I will be very upset," Dante jests as they reach Michael's room.
He steers her up to his bedside, as close as she can get, and then leaves the room.
"Willow," Michael says, voice quiet. It's probably because he's just speaking again after major heart surgery.
"I'm right here," Willow smiles, grabbing his hand gently.
She watches as a smile comes across his face and he looks at her with the look he always gives her. "Good. I don't want you leaving me alone in here. This room is kinda creepy and very boring, but you make it happier. You make everything happier. I heard what you said earlier. Well, parts of it. It was beautiful and if I wasn't coming out of an anesthetic because I got shot, I'd probably be able to say something much more beautiful than I'm about to, but I love you. So please stay married to me."
"I would love nothing more than to stay married to you, Michael," Willow tells her husband truthfully. "You scared me for a while there, I was so worried that you'd die on me before we could have our love story."
"Hey, I'm not that bad. I would never die on you and Wiley. But our love story has already begun, because it's been brewing since we met. Now, it's just turning romantic officially," he smiles at his wife. "If you think of it, us getting shot was kind of a great thing because now we're telling each other what we otherwise wouldn't be."
"Thank you for showing up when you did," she thanks him, "and for saving me. I would've died had it not been for your bravery."
"I wasn't being brave, I was so pissed I wanted to kill those bastards but I needed to keep you safe. So I took a bullet to the chest, but it's worth it," Michael explains. "If you died, I would have never forgiven myself. So thank you for being a good hostage to them so that no one actively wanted to kill you until I got there with my dad and Jason."
They both let out a chuckle, though Michael winces in pain a few times. "That wheelchair can't be comfortable for your back, do you want to come up here? There's plenty of room."
"I don't know if Portia would allow that," Willow smirks at him, "but I doubt she'd object too harshly."
Several minutes later, Willow's in the hospital bed next to Michael and they're both fast asleep.
