Soft
Lucifer entered the study and was not surprised to find Kita poring over their mountain of notes, muttering something under their breath. From the way their forefinger was repeatedly going over a line, it seemed they were intent to memorize a certain passage before turning the page.
He closed the door and kept his gaze on them as they continued to mutter, closing their eyes as their fingers began tapping on the table to help with some rhythm or other. Twice, they blew out a breath in frustration. And then they nearly swore, grabbed the book in both hands and looked for all intents and purposes, as if they were scolding it for being utterly confusing and hard to remember.
Lucifer nodded to himself. This was good.
He was pleased to see that Kita was taking the RAD midterms very seriously and he took satisfaction in knowing that they had taken his warnings of torture and hellfire, should they fail, to heart. Everyone should take his warnings to heart; it would save him all the trouble.
But as Kita carried on, Lucifer found that he was somewhat displeased all the same.
Kita had not noticed Lucifer enter study, nor did they turn their head to where he stood, continuing only to stare at the book in front of them.
Lucifer had half a mind to call out to them. How long had it been since they started studying now? Perhaps it would be best for them to pause and take a break?
But he hesitated, remaining by the door with Kita’s name and the words he wanted to say only half-formed on his tongue. Because reaching out would mean distracting Kita from what he had told them to do. He disliked the idea of pulling them away from what looked like a good flow in their work, and consequently opening himself to the possibility that he would be used as an excuse to discontinue any studying.
Besides, did he not himself disliked the idea of being interrupted whenever he was busy? Did he not go to great pains to make sure none of his brothers would make a mess when he needed to concentrate?
And yet.
It would seem that Lucifer disliked the idea of remaining unnoticed more.
So what exactly was he hesitating for? Surely, it was only a matter of calling Kita’s attention now, wasn’t it?
Lucifer took a deep breath, slightly unnerved that his thoughts would wander about before he could make a decision – but before he could even call to Kita, they had startled, turned their head, and looked at him.
“Oh, Lucifer.” Kita said, putting down the book. “I didn’t notice you there.”
“Yes.” Lucifer said, tone even, biting down the words you didn’t as he collected himself and ignored how now he was certain he very much disliked what he had just experienced and heard. But there was no sense in letting Kita know, much less any sense in allowing his mind to drag the issue further.
“I happened to pass by and saw the lights were open. You’re hard at work.”
“Yeah.” Kita repressed a sigh. “I’m in a bit of a rut, though. Hell has extensive history and I am trying very hard to memorize these names but it’s all just…” They trailed off, made a face that was almost one of distaste.
Lucifer waited for them to continue, using the silence to bridge the gap between them. When Kita only angled their head at him, Lucifer shook his in understanding.
“It bored you, didn’t it?”
“Not exactly…”
Lucifer almost snorted. “Trying to lie to a Demon, now?”
“Okay, fine.” Kita raised their hands. “But I was not bored, you know, exactly. I just felt it was all very monotonous.”
Lucifer quirked a brow.
Kita continued at his prompting. “I had thought that Hell’s rulers would have had more experiences that involved war and killing. You know, backstabbing and drama and mayhem! Instead, Hell’s history has been nothing but boring procedure and inheritance and deciding if a cousin or two could rule some lower province!”
“We are Demons.” Lucifer said. “Not uncultured savages.”
“I didn’t say that and you know I don’t mean it that way.” Kita rolled their eyes in mock exasperation, waved their hand at the book. “But this is all just so uninspiring and plain. If I wanted to know about Diavolo’s lineage and how much pedigree he has, I should be reading it from a very fancy and very elaborate Family Book. Not a book entitled History of Hell: In-depth Analysis of Important Historical Events.”
“That’s fair.” Lucifer chuckled. He’d had the same thoughts with the class then. “You better make extra effort then. I’ve heard that test is particularly tricky.”
Kita groaned into their hands.
“And you better not fail.” Lucifer reminded them.
“Sure. Your murderous pep talk last night at the House is a great motivator. Keeps replaying in my head how anything that will tarnish the name of the Great Lord Diavolo deserves only pain.” But Kita did not sound enthused.
“Punishment is the best motivator.”
Kita lifted their face from their hands. “Must it always be about punishment –”
“We are literally in Hell.”
“ – can’t I simply want to be a good exchange student and make you proud?”
Lucifer raised a brow and snipped away the tendrils of warmth that threatened to wrap around what little remained of his heart. He could not help but repeat what Kita had just said in disbelief. “You want me to be proud of you?”
“Humans can be very competitive!” Kita hurriedly added as they rubbed the back of their neck. An attempt, Lucifer noted, to hide the blush they usually had on that spot. “Can’t lose to Demons – even if they are the Lords of Hell – Luke won’t let me hear the end of it if I got less marks than Mammon or Asmo.”
Right. Right, of course. It would not have anything to do with him.
And yet.
And yet.
Lucifer nodded. “Then do your best to make sure the little chihuahua won’t have anything to bark about.”
Kita averted their gaze. “Right.”
Silence lingered between them; Kita looking down at their book, hands still on their neck, Lucifer still standing and not quite knowing how to carry on with the conversation.
He should go. He should leave Kita to their studies, as was his original intention. He shouldn’t take more time than he already did from their schedule and he shouldn’t say anything further that would only prove to be distractions for the two of them. Idle conversation that would most likely lead to nothing unproductive. Besides, they would need a lot of time memorizing all the names –
“Well, then –”
“Lucifer, look – ”
They started to speak at the same time, stopped at the same time, and stared at each other waiting for the other one to start again.
“You go.” Kita then said.
“No, you continue.” Lucifer said, placing emphasis on his next words. “I insist.”
Kita seemed to recognize the tone he used as the one that brooked no argument. They took a deep breath, hesitating at first, before very slowly patting the book in front of them. “Can you help me with this?”
“What?”
“I mean – if you’re not too busy, of course.”
Lucifer stared at them as they continued to ramble, continued to explain that they knew Lucifer was also studying for exams on top of council duties but that he did tell all of them to study well – and they were trying, all the brothers have sworn off any shenanigans for two days – but they also know he’d aced this test before and Kita was, quite frankly, completely at a loss so if he could help them and maybe quiz them so they could retain the names more, that would be immensely helpful and they would be forever grateful.
“And,” Kita continued, nearly out of breath, “if you have any nuggets of wisdom now is the right opportunity to maybe share.”
Lucifer knew he could count the times when prizes had been so deliberately placed in front of him for the taking with little effort, knew he’d not even reach the count of three, knew that all he needed to do at the moment was to pluck the gem laid out before him and take it for what it was: a golden opportunity best taken advantage of while it lasted.
These moments were far and few in-between; life had never really been kind to him.
But he could not help but be a fool – a prideful fool – who distrusted anything he did not schemed for or forcibly took. “What it’s in it for me?”
“What?” Kita looked genuinely bewildered.
“What do you offer in exchange for my help?” Lucifer leaned on the table, wanting nothing more than to take back what he said and yet couldn’t. Or wouldn’t. “My help comes at a cost.”
“Cost? I’m just asking for – oh. Oh.” Kita clasped their hands together, eyes brightening.
And again, this took Lucifer by surprise. He had expected them to sulk, or retract their plea, or at least be annoyed at him. Kita had come from genuine need for results – a result he had demanded of them – and here he was demanding something from them again. If Lucifer were in Kita’s position, he would not hesitate to turn the offer down. Violently. Part of him had even prepared for the possibility that Kita would be angry.
But they were not. Far from it.
How was it so easy for them to take him by surprise?
“Of course! Because Demons will never do anything without this weird give-me- your-soul-in-exchange-for-a-wish thing, huh?” Kita laughed.
Lucifer found himself staring at them again. “Not your soul – ”
“I know, I know.” Kita waived their hand, stopping him mid-sentence. A rare thing – how many times had they interrupted him in the five minutes since this conversation started? “I’m a treasured exchange student, my soul isn’t up for grabs, blah blah blah.”
Kita looked at him with a determined glint in their eyes now, and the warmth that Lucifer had turned away earlier came back with a vengeance and with no intention of going away.
“First though, if I do pass the test than that means I won’t be suffering any tortuous punishment.” Kita said. “And you have to treat me to Devildom’s best ice cream.”
“It’s a little too late to change the terms to our first agreement but, all right.” Lucifer agreed. “As for my terms –”
Kita interrupted him for the umpteenth time. “If I score lower than Mammon, I’ll treat you to ice cream.”
“How utterly dull.” He scoffed. “If you score lower than any of my brothers, you will have to treat me to something from the human world that I have not yet tasted.”
“What?!” They gasped. “That’s impossible!”
“I think it’s only fair. Since it is in my interest that you pass this test with flying colors, it is only common sense that I put in such parameters to this new agreement. Besides, I’m the one rendering service, shouldn’t I be the one who gets to say my price?”
“Well, yeah…” Kita chewed on her lip. “But hang on, does this mean your reward is to actually see me pass the test?”
“Do not misunderstand. I expect all of my efforts to bear nothing but the best fruit and as such your passing is but the natural course. However, in the unlikely event that you do fail, then my reward is the execution of your punishment and the pleasure of something novel from the human world.”
Kita slowly nodded. “I was expecting something else, really.”
Lucifer raised both brows, curious.
But Kita only shook their head. “But more importantly, do you seriously think I can top Satan’s score?”
“Of course.” Lucifer answered, taking the empty seat beside them. “I am the one tutoring you, am I not?”
Kita grinned widely at that. “You should not let Satan hear that.”
“I have all the confidence in my skills and all the faith in yours.”
“Whatever.” Kita’s hands went to their neck again. “But all right. Deal. I can practically taste my ice cream already.”
Lucifer took out his personal pen, flipped open the book to where Kita was last reading. “Now, I want you to look at these names and tell me what stands out to you the most.”
It was only when Lucifer was sure Kita was immersed again on their textbook did Lucifer allow himself the softest of smiles. Something that he knew he never believed he could do.
Lucifer did not count how many hours passed as he and Kita went over dates, places, names that were too familiar, too weird, and too closely spelled to be any different from all the others. He did not count how much snack they both consumed or how much coffee Kita managed to guzzle in-between bathroom breaks. Nor did Lucifer count how many times he had sensed his brothers peaking at them from the door, with him bracing himself for any interruption. But none of them entered – if only in their respect for Kita and what they wanted to accomplish.
But Lucifer did count the times Kita was close enough that their arms brushed against each other, and the times Kita would lean over to where he was point at the map and he could smell their perfume. Lucifer counted the times Kita smiled triumphantly at having recalled something faster, the times they rubbed their cheeks in frustration, and the times they laughed at his comments on about Devildom history.
He counted. And each one, he tucked inside that warmth spreading in him, making him feel a lot of things he would not bother counting or saying out loud.

~~~
That night Alice was not able to sleep until very late: her thoughts were filled of blue eyes, green fins and mystical creatures. She also didn't know how to refer to him. She would have to ask him how he would like to be called. She was also very worried that he had run away for good and didn't intend staying there anymore. The next morning, she woke up very groggy, and with her usual cup of milk and coffee in hand went outside, hoping to see the merman again. She didn't even know what she would say to him, if he actually showed up, but she knew she was attracted to him and, as shy as she usually was, this time she felt confident enough to at least talk to him again. While gently blowing on her cup and sipping the hot drink, she saw a shadow in the depth of the lake swimming towards her. He resurfaced just in front of her and smiled. "It was a phone yesterday, right?" "Yes, it was my phone ringing". "Obviously..." he now looked annoyed at himself. A slight blush was forming on his cheeks as he sheepishly ran a hand on the back of his neck. Alice tried to contain her giggles, hiding her face behind the mug: "So you know what a phone is?" "The old man explained it to me, but he rarely used one". As the giggles subsided, Alice mustered up the courage to ask him about his name: "Listen, is there... is there a name I can call you? Something I can pronounce?" "Whatever you want". "How did that old man call you?" "He called me boy... please anything but that..." He looked a little affronted at that. Smiling, Alice started to think about a name but didn't come up with anything satisfying. "I'll have to think about it, if it's okay". "I never had a human name, so choose an interesting one. Something you humans would find cool". He ended with a bright smile sending Alice's way a wink. Alice really didn't know if he knew what he was doing, or if flirting was just his second nature. Probably the second. She tried not to entertain the thought that he might be flirty because he actually liked her the way she was starting to like him. Sighing, she was about to get up, when he rushed forward grabbing the arm with which she was holding the mug, effectively stopping her. "What?" "What is this you're drinking?" "Coffee and milk... you want to try it?" "It smells good... can I?" "Here". She handed him the mug, looking as he first looked at the drawings printed on the mug and then, holding it carefully, started to sip from it. His concentrated expression slowly turned into one of surprise: "It tastes so good!" Seeing his happiness in discovering this new drink Alice said: "You can finish it, if you want". "Thank you so much!" Alice realized then how the merman often seemed to behave like an overgrown child: every emotion he had was on display for her to read. Alice thought that this might have been the reason she felt attracted to him, regardless of his good looks: he was so easy to understand that, despite the short time she had known him for, she felt like she could trust him. She was convinced that him being a merman was not the only difference he had with a normal man: while she felt that it was very difficult to find a trustworthy man, with this merman she perceived a certain honesty and she couldn't help but to feel drawn towards it. "Listen... I now need to go to work..." said Alice. "Don't you work from home?" He said stopping to drink for a moment. Alice thought she saw a glint of sadness in his eyes. "Usually yes, but today I have a meeting with my colleagues and I have to go to the village". "Ok..." "You can leave the mug on the rocks when you're finished". "How long will you be away?" It felt like he was purposefully trying to make the conversation a little longer: "I'll be back by six, this evening". "This evening there is a full moon... You know its reflection in the lake is beautiful... I thought maybe... we could watch it together". Alice was very taken aback by his proposal and his shyness... "I'd like it very much..." Alice caught herself using a very soft voice and, before he could see her blush one again, she stood and after a very rushed goodbye, sprinted back into her house, too embarrassed to even look back. If she had, she would have seen the surprised look on his face being replaced by a warm smile. Alice readied herself to get to work. She then got into her car, not before having glimpsed toward the lake, where there was no trace of the merman, except for the mug. ~ After her meeting, she went to greet one of her colleagues and certainly the best (maybe only) friend she had in that town. "Janet! How are you?" They exchanged a hug. "I'm fine! Same old boring secretary work but at least I get to live in the village... not like some hermit we both know..." she said with a teasing glint. "Hey! You know how beautiful my house is! No need to live surrounded by people when I have that perfect paradise just around the corner!" Alice said. "Well yes it's beautiful, I’ll give you that. But I always wonder how will you ever be able to meet THE one when you spend all your time alone... Seriously you should try to come over here more often. Also, I know other people around here, you know? You could make yourself more friends if you would just let me be your guide!" Janet started counting on her fingers: "We could go to parties, we could go shopping, we could..." "Stop it right there! I get it... It's just that..." "I know, it's not your cup of tea". "Yes..." "Well anyway, what do you want to ask me?" Alice looked at her friend in puzzlement. "How did you know I was going to ask you something?!" Janet laughed and said: "If you had more friends you would understand how I did it!" "Ok, I get it. Well, I actually would really like to stop that John Hutton's project..." Janet started to look worried "... but I know that alone I don't have nor the courage nor the possibility nor the right ideas to be able to make it... so I thought I would..." "Ask me because I'm the only person you know..." ended Janet for her. "I know I'm asking a lot, but it would mean a lot for me and particularly I know it would mean a lot for many other people. I thought maybe we could create a petition to sign for everyone who doesn't want the project to go on... What do you think?" "I know many people here and I've heard enough gossip to know that most people here would agree with you. The problem is that Hutton is corrupting people with money... Many people are blinded by his offer". "I thought about this... One of his men actually asked me to sign a permission form and, after I declined, he also suggested that they would pay me to silence me up... I think that people here are not really able to understand how much power their decisions can have when all are working together. I'm not an expert, but I made some research and the two main problems such a power plant could cause would be most damaging in a valley like ours: I'm talking about possible flooding and environmental pollution. If they haven't paid those people yet, and only made suggestions, we could still convince everyone to join our cause, what do you say? Can we at least try?" Janet looked very concentrated: "... I think I might have a better solution..." with a smirk Janet explained her plan: "I know a friend of mine, Ace, received the same proposal they made you because he also lives near a stream... He is the owner of a shop, which is near his house, and knows most people there. If we could use him to convince the people there to join our plan, it would make everything easier. You see, making people sign a petition might certainly have some degree of success but if a lot of money is involved, we might just not make it out of sheer willpower..." Alice was now listening very attentively to Janet's words: "We will set a trap to our dear John Hutton..." Alice interrupted her friend's evil laugh: "A trap?" "Yes! You see, when Hutton's men will target their next victims, asking them to sign and suggesting to pay them if they don't cooperate... well, we will have already talked to those people through my friend Ace. We will have already asked them to refuse just for them to make their illegal suggestion of corruption and..." "Why would they do that purposefully?" "Just let me finish! We will have them record their whole dialogue! In this way we will have proof that what they’re doing is wrong and they won't be able to continue their project!" "This might actually be the best idea you've ever had!" "Yes I know... Wait, what do you mean!?" Janet exclaimed outraged but Alice was already looking ecstatic at the prospect of stopping Hutton. "Janet you're a genius!" "I know! Now, I'll contact Ace right away and in less than a week I think we might have our results! Now, I don't think a petition is a bad idea either... We could try to write a draft together this evening. I know you rarely leave home so I want to make the most out of you while you’re here." Janet didn't even let Alice retort before she dragged her out of her office and into a bar. They dined there and then spent the evening finishing a draft.
Ectober Day 10: Exorcism - Mimicry
Ghosts aren’t that different from demons. And Danny’s got no problem fucking with a priest.
Danny’s sitting, curling his ghostly tail around, on a rooftop building when he spots him. He shows up in an arguably insanely pompous Mustang, the kind with wood side panelling. Danny tilts his head as he watches the car park, at least whoever wasn’t enough of a stick-up-the-ass to double park. The guy stepping out in head to toe black, nearly looking like he’s wearing a dress. At first, Danny figured it was some goth, but sticking his head invisibly through the hotel lobby ceiling -curious about this stranger in his town, his lair- the guy spoke like his car looked; professional but egotistical. Spotting the little white on the guys neck only makes Danny internally groan. Priests. Well, technically only one but still. Though he is a little curious, there had never been one of their types here before. Probably thought ghosts were demons or something.
For whatever reason the guy seems to intimidate Jamey the receptionist, watching as she’s clearly trying to get the guy away from her and is trying not to touch the guy. Which only seems to make priest dude suspicious, intentionally grabbing and holding onto her hand and looking like he’s searching her eyes. Danny floats down closer, invisible of course, at this, in case this guy is legit dangerous and tries to attack her or something.
Thankfully, he lets go and heads to his room with a smile. Jamey shaking herself off after a bit. Danny hangs around the lobby for a bit to make sure she’s fine and priest guy doesn’t come back.
Danny sniffs out the guys' room and promptly puts a SpookSpot, a camera that looks like a little black ghost sticker, to watch priest guys door. And heads back to proper patrolling and enjoying the late afternoon sky.
Two day’s later Danny’s pretty well forgotten about the guy. He just seems to be wandering the town, muttering to himself, and nodding at things. The only real beef Danny had with the guy was that he was creeping people out.
But apparently, the guy was just patient, or spent a lot of time plotting. As Danny comes upon him doing...something? to the Box Ghost of all ghosts. He was seemingly chanting and making erratic hand motions. While the Box Ghost just looks really confused. Eventually, the Box Ghost, seeing a lost cause, shouts, “BEWARE!!!”, and promptly flies off.
The priest looks pleased with himself for whatever reason.
The next day Danny groans at spotting the priest, with a visitors badge, wandering the halls of Casper high, hands clasped behind his back and occasionally nodding at things.
Tucker pokes Danny, “you know, your folks aren’t the weirdest people here anymore”.
Danny sighs, “yeah, guy’s super weird. I think he tried to exorcise Boxy. It was...really sad. Boxy took pity on him”.
Tucker snorts, “that is pretty sad”.
Danny’s ghost sense goes off just as they start heading to class. Danny sighs dramatically, “so much for first period”, Tucker pats him on the back as well slinks off. Never noticing the ever so slightly wide-eyed priest watching.
Danny gets up with a yawn in the morning, struggling into a sweater and ruffling up his hair before heading down for breakfast.
Danny looks around the table, slightly caught off guard. The priest guy, who Danny has figured out was named Jospeh which honestly was a stereotypical as Hell name, is just sitting at the table; letting Jack and Maddie talk ghost at him with a pleasant smile, though it felt rather fake.
Danny shrugs loosely, and goes to make his cereal, “mornin’”.
Maddie smiles, “morning sweetie. This fine man was curious about the ghosts in town, so Jack decided he could stay for tea”, looking to Jospeh, “you’re named Jospeh you said right?”.
“It is”.
Danny sits down with his bowl, nodding at the guy, “mine’s Danny. And if you wanna talk ghosts then yeah, this is the house to do it in”, Danny decides to fuck with the guy a little, “who knows, maybe my dad’ll pull out the portal photo album”.
Jack grins wide, “yes! We should!”, springing up and rushing off.
Jospeh squints ever so slightly at Danny and turns to face him more, “portal?”.
Danny leans back and puts his hands behind his head nonchalantly, “yup, ghosties come and go through it sometimes. Dad fishes trough it”, deciding to be the mild to colossal idiot that he is, “I've come and gone through it here and there”.
Maddie shakes her head, “I remember that time you stumbled out with a knife in your leg. Didn’t you trip in that time?”.
Danny chuckles, ignoring the priests staring, “yup. Dad left some stuff on the floor and you know how clumsy I am”. Maddie giggles at that before going back to drinking her coffee.
Jospeh stares at him a bit before Jack returns with the aforementioned photo album and Jospeh changes to staring at that.
Danny chuckles and fills up a large thermos with coffee and promptly leaves. Only walking for a ways before slinking into an alley, turning invisible and intangible, then going back to the house.
Danny tilts his head Jospeh seemingly convincing his parents to go out hunting extra long and letting Jospeh help house sit so that he can ‘get a feel for ghosts’. His folks were way too easy to trick sometimes. If Danny’s stuck with this stuck up religious nut then he’s gonna mess around, moving closer to make creepy breathing sounds and blow air at the guy; who shivers from the cold temperature, before looking around for the source. Danny facepalms as Jospeh subtly throws salt out in one direction, clearly thinking there’s a ‘demon’ there. Danny absolutely was going to torment this poor prick. He was creeping all his humans out, would probably grow bold enough to interrupt fights, and he was a pompous twat. The last was honestly reason enough.
Danny comes home that night and as soon as he closes the door, Jospeh is staring at him. Danny waves at him, “sup priest boy”, pointing at the guy, “you know you’re creeping out pretty well the whole town? What’s your issue?”.
“Am I now”.
“Yup”.
Joshep squints but takes a sip of tea, “good. The Fenton parents seem to be the only not under demonic influence in this infested town”, Jospeh slowly walks closer to Danny, “but of course you already know that, don’t you demon”.
Danny makes a show of looking overly offended, “me? Some powerful being from another dimension? Why I never”.
“Hell is hardly another dimension, beast”.
Danny chuckles, “well look at you, able to come up with not one but two insulting names to spit like venom”.
Joseph walks closer and pushes a large silver cross into Danny’s chest, “that’s enough from you. Give it up and release the boy who’s body you’ve stolen and this town. You should have known your time was numbered as soon as you saw me”.
Danny rolls his eyes, utterly unaffected, “of a pompous twat who’s so greatly out of his depth? Hardly”
Joshep pushes the cross in hard and glares, “you're using protections, Foul thing. No matter, there’s seals everywhere, you’re trapped”.
Danny chuckles and makes it sound a bit threatening, “sure, whatever you say buddy”. Pushing past the guy to fetch himself some coffee. Pouring it but giving Joshep dramatic side-eye as the guy starts chanting at him.
“Princeps gloriosissime caelestis militiae, sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio et colluctatione, quae nobis adversus principes et potestates, adversus mundi rectores tenebrarum harum, contra spiritualia nequitiae, in caelestibus“. Danny watching as the guy flips a coin with a cross hollowed out of it and clutches at rosary beads. This guy really was going there wasn’t he? Danny chuckles and smirks, fine, Danny will give this weirdo a damn show.
Joseph continues his chant prayer, “Veni in auxilium hominum, quos Deus creavit inexterminabiles, et ad imaginem similitudinis suae fecit, et a tyrannide diaboli emit pretio magno“.
He holds up and waves around the rosary, making sure the light glints off it. While Danny starts pretending to be in agony but like he’s trying not to show it. As Joshep continues, “Proeliare hodie cum beatorum Angelorum exercitu proelia Domini, sicut pugnasti contra ducem superbiae Luciferum, et angelos eius apostaticos: et non valuerunt, neque locus inventus est eorum amplius in coelo. Sed proiectus est draco ille magnus, serpens antiquus, qui vocatur diabolus et satanas, qui seducit universum orbem; et proiectus est in terram, et angeli eius cum illo missi sunt“.
Danny’s just letting out his fangs and ears at this point, curled up on the ground and pretending to be pissed off at the priest. Who only narrows his eyes with resolute determination, “En antiquus inimicus et homicida vehementer erectus est. Transfiguratus in angelum lucis, cum tota malignorum spirituum caterva late circuit et invadit terram, ut in ea deleat nomen Dei et Christi eius, animasque ad aeternae gloriae coronam destinatas furetur, mactet ac perdat in sempiternum interitum“.
Joshep splashes a container of holy water over Danny, who has to try really hard to not laugh and break character, “Virus nequitiae suae, tamquam flumen immundissimum, draco maleficus transfundit in homines depravatos mente et corruptos corde; spiritum mendacii, impietatis et blasphemiae; halitumque mortiferum luxuriae, vitiorum omnium et iniquitatum“.
Joshep starts aggressively pointing the cross at Danny, “Ecclesiam, Agni immaculati sponsam, faverrimi hostes repleverunt amaritudinibus, inebriarunt absinthio; ad omnia desiderabilia eius impias miserunt manus“.
Danny makes a show off grabbing the guys ankle and letting Joshep shake him off. Though taking amusement in the ever so slight startled waver in his voice, “Ubi sedes beatissimi Petri et Cathedra veritatis ad lucem gentium constituta est, ibi thronum posuerunt abominationis et impietatis suae; ut percusso Pastore, et gregem disperdere valeant“.
Danny starts abortedly duplicating, only letting the duplicate start forming or splitting for seconds before snapping them back. Joshep near bellowing now, “Adesto itaque, Dux invictissime, populo Dei contra irrumpentes spirituales nequitias, et fac victoriam“.
Danny once again has to resist laugh as the guy throws salt at him again, “Te custodem et patronum sancta veneratur Ecclesia; te gloriatur defensore adversus terrestrium et infernorum nefarias potestates; tibi tradidit Dominus animas redemptorum in superna felicitate locandas“.
Danny lets a duplicate form halfway but seemingly attempting to snap back ‘into’ Danny. Catching the slight smile on the priests face, “Deprecare Deum pacis, ut conterat satanam sub pedibus nostris, ne ultra valeat captivos tenere homines, et Ecclesiae nocere“.
Danny lets the duplicate fly out of him and slam into the back wall, letting his originally body collapse and pretend to be unconscious. While Joshep stalks after the duplicate, waving the cross and slashing holy water, “Offer nostras preces in conspectu Altissimi, ut cito anticipent nos misericordiae Domini, et apprehendas draconem, serpentem antiquum, qui est diabolus et satanas, ac ligatum mittas in abyssum, ut non seducat amplius gentes“.
Joshep grins wide at the duplicate, pushing the cross into his face, “I cast away any devout dismay, that child in these Christ blessed arms of mine shall never fall at the hands of hellish beasts”.
The duplicate chuckles into the cross, “he’s mine old man”.
Joshep grits his teeth, “you shall evade the one of holy youth, the blessed one of creators uncorrupted, malevolent apparition. Vade retro Satana”.
The duplicate smirks, “ah so foolish, you think you’re some great knowing thing. How much longer till your facade breaks down?”.
“Truth and God shall never waver Beast”.
Original Danny gets up and stretches. Walking over and tapping on Joshep’s shoulder, “if I may turn you away from this rather pathetic display. This child was never one to fall. And I’m only in my own hands”.
The duplicate sits up and pretty well pushes over Joshep. The duplicate roles his eyes, “dude come one. There ain’t no demons here. And do you really think shit like salt and water is going to work on a being bound to eternity?”. The duplicate simply dissipates in the air while Joshep stands up and whirls around to see Danny just standing there and picking at his nails.
Danny pats him on the shoulder, “that was fun, good acting lessons on my part. Anyway, you got that whole need to exorcise out of you system?”.
Joshep sputters, “w-what are you?”.
Danny, deciding to be a dick and really freak this guy out, let’s his transformation ring form around his forehead like a halo for a split second and makes his eyes glow icy blue.
Joshep goes slightly wide-eyed but composes himself quickly. It’s obvious he now thinks Danny’s an angel as he dips his head slightly, “Dânêl. Concede nos famulos tuos, tu pro nobis intercedere dignentur in solio mixtum commiscere divinae miserationis in praesentem necessitatem, quod tu vis quemadmodum nuntiare Mariae in mysterio incarnationis Christi, ut per tua suffragia et patrocinia sentiamus in caelis perpetuae capiamus beneficia eiusdem, et laudem Dei usque in aeternum cantabo in terra viventium“.
Danny holds his hands up and waves the guy off, “you’re freaking my humans out. Stop that. This place is in good hands”, smirking slightly, “as for the shit that just happened. I’m a trickster”.
Danny walks up and pats the guys shoulder with a chuckle, “there are so many things in this world that you’ll never understand. Do not fall to the faults of assuming you know what you do not. Nor that the truths you know are all there is to know. There are no demons here”.
Joshep looks into Danny’s eyes, seeing nothing but fierce protectiveness, twinkling of amusement, and soft kindness. “Then what be they, should you bless me with that knowledge? Could it be that this is why I am here?”.
Danny chuckles and walks to look out the window. Snickering at the seals, “in all the forms of existences there’s bound to be a few you’ve never seen, you could try to achieve it. Become one of the beings of the Infinite Realms. But most of them can never leave or it will be a long time. So I don’t really recommend”, turning to look at Joshep before Danny gestures out the window, “most of them were once living mortals. Some were not. Souls unable to move on granted powering and purpose. Some protect and guide, watching over mortals or time itself. Others try to keep order and punish those who miss-use their power. Others do what you see here in Amity. Scare. Goof around. There are very few who are what you may call evil”.
Joshep walks up next to Danny, and looks out, jerking as all the seals burn away win blue flames. Side-eyeing the chuckling Danny, “you are a well humoured one”.
Danny smirks, “very much so”, nodding his head at the window, “the ones who are dead’s. They all died in brutal fashion. So horrid that existence itself decided they deserved another chance to live free and strong. Make no mistake priest. I protect them as well”. Danny makes his eyes blue and the frost creep across the window to make his point clear.
Joshep nods and dips his head, “but of course. I did not expect my wrongs and I have much to ponder. To none will I bring hassle nor harm”.
Danny chuckles, “good. I will continue keeping an eye on you regardless”.
Joshep blinks but nods with a small smile. And while this was highly enlightening and a blessing, he had zero intentional of imposing on or hanging around an Angel. Angel’s often said ‘be not afraid’ for a reason, they were not truly pleasant creatures and this one had firmly pretended to be a demon and be in agony. So Joshep bows with clasped hands, “blessed you”, before heading out the door.
Danny chuckles, “oh I’m very blessed indeed”.
End.
