something sad about seeing works of art (visual, books, games, etc) where i think i can tell what the artist was going for but it feels like they didn't quite hit the mark
particularly in the indie gaming sphere, its usually because the team is too small and doesnt have enough budget to do justice to the vision the creative lead had. it makes me a little sad because the problem isn't 'you're unskilled at this artform' its 'you physically dont have the resources to pull this off in a way that would really hit home'. and some indie game teams can pull of amazing games with such small budgets but it takes so much time and know-how, that you can't really fault the teams that release games with clunky interfaces or occasional glitching, because the alternative is slaving for years more on a game that's gonna make them pennies
anyway. sometimes i play a subpar indie game and im frustrated because if they just bothered more it could have been decent, and sometimes im sad because i can tell that what they were TRYING to do would have been cool, if they just could
#im trying to work through some of the short games on my backlog lol#I just played Adios which I got for free on Epic I think like a month ago or so?#and ultimately it's just a somber little walking sim#I think with just a little more creative vision and programming expertise it would have made me cry#now im thinking about how...#walking sims are usually just indie projects with small teams. no major design team makes walking sims do they?#lots of people look down on walking sims - even the 'genre' name is technically an insult#but. they aren't by default bad or boring#i think if a team with a lot more resources tried to make a really good walking sim they could do it#oh wait crap Firewatch is a walking sim and everyone seems to love it. technically Journey is a walking sim too#no ok so I'm right good walking sims exist. by indie design teams too. they just need access to the resources to pull their vision off
