Background of Gaurav
Basic Info-
Full Name: Gaurav Michael Aryeh
Age: 21
Height/Weight: 6’8/ 270IB
Brown skin with his mane dreaded.
Quirk: Lion
- He has the attributes of a Lion, and a few physical traits of it as well. This boosts his strength, speed, durability, and all 5 senses. There’s also a sercret technique he has with his eyes he calls “Leader of the Pride”.
Let the story...Begin!
“Dad, you do bad things when you’re at work don’t you?”
Gaurav was born in Cameroon, but after his mother died a few hours after his birth, his father quickly packed everything and moved to Tokyo, Japan.
Gauravs Father was a notorious Crime Boss back in Africa. He moved to Japan to escape the heat he created back there and start a new, this time, keeping his work underground. Gaurav, at 5, along with his new born sister was oblivious to their fathers work. Including his step mother. But by 6, Gauravs quirk started to show, and he got it from his father. A lion quirk. A lion tail grew, ears, retractable claws, and the most noticeable, a black mane.
Because Gauavs quirk was exactly like his fathers, his dad decided to train Gaurav to become the next leader of his underground gang called “The Pride”. He would be forced to train after school, hunt, and use his quirk to the fullest. But Gaurav wanted different.
He read news articles about hero’s like All Might, hero’s that would go above and beyond to save people, and that’s what he wanted. But, his father refused to allow him to have anything remotely connected to hero’s. He didn’t want his legacy to die. Gaurav at this point is 14, and fully understands what he must do to please his father.
More years of training and studying to understand the way the world works, the way the streets operate around here. His fathers operation was mainly selling and distributing weapons and drugs for money. Gaurav, as much as he hated it, supported his fathers work. His younger sister inevitably found out about the operation and left to live her mother in Kyoto. And when Gaurav was 17, his father died in his sleep, leaving his legacy to Gaurav.
With Gaurav now in charge of the #69 ranked underground gang in Japan, he knew if he wanted to get more noticed, things would have to change. But the thought of being a hero never left his head. He told the gang to hold off on any major sales or operations. Gaurav then went through the entire process to become a hero as a late comer. After a year and a half passed, he took the hero name “King” and then gathered “The Pride” together.
He explained his reasoning on why he became a hero, and why they should hold off on any major sales. It was because “The Pride” wont be recognized as a small time weapom and drug sales anymore. He will send out specific crimes that will gradually increase, operation by operation. And the new hero “King” will stop them. This will give “The Pride” a better name and the hero “King” a better reputation, which involves money.
Naturally ‘The Pride’ was against this because that will give the members jail time. That’s when Gaurav introduces a new member, and friend, Kisame Kisame. With his unique quirk, snatch, he can help break out any ‘Pride’ members without setting off a single alarm.
With this new change, Gaurav carried ‘The Pride’ to the #9 spot of Gangs to watch out for, and varied the hero name “King” to the 15th ranked hero in Japan. Staging the problem and single handedly solving them. Creating an image for ‘The Pride’ that the media can’t ignore, and being a hero that everyone respects.
With this operation going on for 3 years, Gaurav and Kisame hang out in public casually and daily. This time, present day, a beautiful brown skin girl catches Gauravs attention, her name...Bliss.

Misha's popularity
CW was wondering what to do with Misha.  They used ''Goodbye Stranger'', otherwise known to logical fans as the Swan Song rip off.  It was supposed to be Misha big ''comeback'' episode.  The network was gauging his character's popularity and hinting that Misha was returning to SPN as a regular in season 9.  The next day TV Guide FB posted their Jeers and Cheers poll on Castiel's return to Supernatural.  Meanwhile, Marketing Enterprise was measuring Misha's Q score [popularity] with the general audience.
Tumblr media
80% of the fans, voted JEERS to Cas's big return and Misha's Q score dropped so far below the threshold that Marketing Enterprise hasn't surveyed Misha since then.  These were predecessors to the financial disasters Misha has caused now.
Tumblr media
Seats for the J2 panel are sold out almost immediately, whilst Misha has fewer seats but higher prices because Creation knows that everyone doesn't want to meet Misha.  So let the hellers pay more.  Even at Indycon, they had to give away tickets on the radio because they had too many left over.  Convention sales for Castiel merchandise have declined so much that they have to give away free Cas merchandise when you buy something else.  There were no ratings boosts when Cas is in an episode, and most Cas-centric episodes are lower rated on average.  That is why there haven't been many.  These are not baseball stats.  These are CWs own estimates, in other words, credible estimates.  Use your thinking cap.  If Misha is so profitable, why would they sideline him?  What stupid business would run itself like that?  Give the popular guy more to do right?  Yeah, but only if he is popular.  Since season 9, there has been nothing for Castiel to do.  He, literally, went missing for almost an entire season because of possession, and nobody cared.  Ask yourself, why doesn't Misha ''the crowd puller'' get a spin off?  I mean he ''saved Supernatural's ratings'', didn't he?  Ask yourself, who is telling you Misha is a crowd puller and a lead who saved the show.  CW?  The cast and crew?  No, the meta writers and loud mouths in the destiel camp tell a lot of over bloated lies.
So don't they just fire him?
He networks.  Misha studied social theory and was an intern at the white house.  So Misha knows, to a certain degree, how to keep close to decision makers like Robert Singer and mobilize a group of people.  Keeping close ties to decision makers and keeping his crowd loud and brutish, will ensure that the idea of dismissing him will put off TPTB.  Unless there is a marked change in the hierarchy.  But I don't think he will ever leave, unless a showrunner with backbone arrives to take the reins of Supernatural.  You can tell that other people in decision making positions are not happy.
Tumblr media
You cannot tell me they aren't throwing shade at Misha here.  Because why would they add Mark P to the conversation and tell him, that Misha did a better job with a character that Mark played for longer?  And why would they use that still when there were plenty tamer ones?  They are literally mocking him.
Tumblr media
The YAW channel mocking both Misha and his hellers, because they know what the predictable reaction is going to be.  No publicity is bad publicity.  One of Misha's relatives, apparently works for Creation.  Therefore, despite the terrible reception this guy gets, they tried their hand at a local ''destiel'' con.  Honolulu was the only local con that was going to have a cockles panel.  Before the con could even start, this happened.
Tumblr media
It flopped.  Lets see if they return, next year.  But if they do, its not going to be a Cockles panel.  Misha's relative must be working extra hard because Indycon was still planned.  If I were running operations, I would have said no.  The man is not profitable.  Despite that almost everyone accept the actual stars, were in attendance, the con failed.  I don't see any talk of one happening next year.  If there is one, I will be shocked.  Misha Collins is not popular.  Hence, Destiel wont see the light of day.  Don't get your hopes up.  Have a nice day.

What Republicans Voted Against Tax Bill
Tumblr media
The Congressional Republican Tax Plan Is A Tax On Disability
2 California Republicans vote no on tax reform bill | ABC7
Throughout 2017, President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have continually taken aim at the health, well-being, and independence of Americans with disabilities. From repeated attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and end Medicaid as we know it to budget proposals that slash Social Security disability benefits, disability employment services, Meals on Wheels, and more, the agenda Trump and his colleagues in Congress are pursuing would be nothing short of a disaster for people with disabilities. The latest attack comes in the form of their partisan tax plan, which passed the House on November 16 and is set to be voted on in the Senate as soon as this week.
Although they have sold the plan as a Christmas present for the middle class, under the Senate bill, a staggering 87 million* middle- and working-class families would see their taxes rise by 2027. Meanwhile, the top 0.1 percent would receive an average tax cut of $208,060. Furthermore, by repealing the Affordable Care Acts individual mandate, the tax plan would also undermine the individual insurance market, driving up premiums and leaving 13 million more Americans without health insurance by 2025.
Here are seven ways that President Trump and congressional Republicans tax plan is a tax on disability.
Personal Exemption And Healthcare Mandate
The law suspended the personal exemption, which was $4,150, through 2025. The law also ended the individual mandate, a provision of the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare” that provided tax penalties for individuals who did not obtain health insurance coverage, in 2019. the taxpayer will still be exposed to a penalty for not being covered by health insurance all year.)
According to the Congressional Budget Office , repealing the measure is likely to reduce federal deficits by around $338 billion from 2018 to 2027, but lead 13 million more people to live without insurance at the end of that period, pushing premiums up by an average of around 10%. Unlike other individual tax changes, the repeal will not be reversed in 2025.
Senators Lamar Alexander and Patty Murray proposed a bill, the Bipartisan Health Care Stabilization Act, on Mar. 19, 2018, to mitigate the effects of repealing the individual mandate. The CBO estimated that this legislation would still leave 13 million more people uninsured after a decade. The bill failed to make it into the $1.3 trillion spending bill that was passed on Mar. 23, 2018. As such, the burden of providing affordable health insurance will be on states and health insurers.
Republicans Pass Historic Tax Cuts Without A Single Democratic Vote
Vice President Mike Pence walks through the Capitol to the House Chamber to watch the passage of the Republican tax bill. Photo: J. Scott Applewhite / AP
For history … 12:47 a.m.: “WASHINGTON Senate passes 1st major rewrite of US tax code in 31 years, setting stage for final House vote on Wednesday.”
Being there, per AP: “he Senate narrowly passed the legislation on a party-line 51-48 vote. Protesters interrupted with chants of ‘kill the bill, don’t kill us’ and Vice President Mike Pence repeatedly called for order. Upon passage, Republicans cheered, with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin among them.”
Just before 2:30 p.m., the House had passed the bill 227-203. But three provisions “violated Senate rules, forcing the Senate to vote to strip them out. So the massive bill was hauled back across the Capitol for the House to vote again , and Republicans have a chance to celebrate again.”
Senate: “Voting yes were 0 Democrats and 51 Republicans. Voting no were 46 Democrats, 0 Republicans and 2 independents.”
House:“Voting yes were 0 Democrats and 227 Republicans. Voting no were 191 Democrats and 12 Republicans. … There are 3 vacancies.”
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise says House Appropriations Chair Rodney Frelinghuysen should retain his position even though he voted against the GOP tax overhaul.
Differences Between The House And Senate Bills
There were important differences between the House and Senate versions of the bills, due in part to the Senate reconciliation rules, which required that the bill impact the deficit by less than $1.5 trillion over ten years and have minimal deficit impact thereafter. For example:
In final changes prior to approval of the Senate bill on December 2, additional changes were made that were reconciled with the House bill in a conference committee, prior to providing a final bill to the President for signature. The Conference Committee version was published on December 15, 2017. It had relatively minor differences compared to the Senate bill. Individual and pass-through tax cuts expire after ten years, while the corporate tax changes are permanent.
Kevin McCarthy, House Majority Leader
In the Senate, Republicans “eager for a major legislative achievement after the Affordable Care Act debacle … have generally been enthusiastic about the tax overhaul.”
A number of Republican senators who initially expressed trepidation over the bill, including Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Susan Collins of Maine, and Steve Daines of Montana, ultimately voted for the Senate bill.
Us House Set To Vote On Republican Tax Bill
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The U.S. House of Representatives will vote Tuesday on a Republican $1.5 trillion tax bill that will provide tax relief for most Americans, but benefit the wealthy the most, according to a non-partisan tax analysis group.
Following the House vote, the Senate will vote on the measure later Tuesday, according to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.  If both houses approve the measure, it will be sent to President Donald Trump for him to sign into law, completing the first extensive modification of the U.S. tax code in more than 30 years and giving Trump his first major legislative victory.
Republican lawmakers appear to have the votes to permanently cut corporate taxes from 35 to 21 percent, temporarily and modestly reduce taxes paid by wage and salary earners, and boost Americas national debt by up to $1.5 trillion.
The non-partisan Tax Policy Center concluded Monday the bill would cut taxes for 95 percent of Americans next year, but average cuts for top earners would greatly exceed reductions for people earning less.
The legislation also partially repeals former president Barack Obama’s signature health care law and is expected to add nearly $1.5 trillion to the federal debt during the next decade.
“This is going to make such a positive difference in the lives of working Americans,” House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters Tuesday on Capitol Hill.
Gop Members Most From High
House Republican leaders cheered passage of their sweeping tax overhaul Thursday, but 13 GOP lawmakers bucked their party and voted against the bill.
All but one of them hailed from New York, New Jersey and California each a high-tax state. These lawmakers largely opposed the legislation because it curtailed the state and local tax deduction, also known as SALT. The measure caps the deduction for property taxes at $10,000 while eliminating the tax break for state and local income or sales taxes.
Six of the lawmakers are in competitive races in 2018 based on ratings by Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales.  Eleven of the 13 Republicans are being targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Here are the Republicans who voted against the tax bill:
How Each House Member Voted On The Tax Bill
DEC. 19, 2017
WASHINGTON The House voted 227-203 on Tuesday to pass the Republican tax overhaul bill. The Times tracked how every representative voted, live from the House chamber.
UPDATE The Senate voted on Wednesday to pass the tax bill.
Majority needed to pass 203 2
Twelve Republicans voted no, and all but one of them were from California, New Jersey or New York. The bill was expected to pass, and now it will head to the Senate. If it passes the Senate, President Trump could then sign the legislation into law.
It would have taken 23 Republican no votes for the bill to fail, and only 13 Republicans voted against the original House version of the tax plan. Representative Tom McClintock of California was the only Republican to change his vote to yes on this bill from no on the original House bill. All Democrats were expected to vote no.
New Tax Brackets For Individuals
10% $0 $9,525
35% $400,001 $600,000
37% $600,001 or more
But remember, these changes apply for when were filing for the 2018 calendar year. These wont be used a guidance next Spring.
However, Trump declared last week that Americans will see lower taxes and bigger paychecks starting in February.
The president made the announcement while urging Congress to give him a bill to sign before the holidays.
He said: Im excited to announce that if Congress sends me a bill before Christmas the IRS this is just out, this is breaking news has just confirmed that Americans will see lower taxes and bigger paychecks beginning in February. Just two short months from now. Just got that. We just got that.
Trump continued:  This is for the people of middle income. This is for very, very special people. We are going to have a country that celebrates you again hard working, great people. Youre being celebrated again, remember that.
Someone else called me the deplorables, were proud to be the deplorables. Were going to make the American dream and thatll be the dream that you want for your children and your grandchildren.
If you make your voices heard, this moment will be forever remembered as the dawn of a great new American future.

Us Senate Advances Infrastructure Bill Inches Slowly Toward Passage
Tax reform: GOP congressman votes no
David MorganMakini Brice
WASHINGTON, Aug 7 – The U.S. Senate voted to advance a $1 trillion infrastructure package on Saturday but remained on a slow path toward passage with two Republicans openly opposing behind-the-scenes efforts to wrap up work on one of President Joe Biden’s top priorities.
In a 67-27 vote demonstrating broad support, senators agreed to limit debate on the legislation, the biggest investment in decades in America’s roads, bridges, airports and waterways.
Eighteen of 50 Senate Republicans voted to move the legislation forward, with Senators John Cornyn and Deb Fischer backing the package for the first time.
But on Saturday evening, progress stalled on an agreement on amendments that could have allowed the Senate to speed up consideration of the legislation.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the Senate would convene at noon ET on Sunday to resume consideration of the infrastructure bill. “Hopefully we can come to some agreement tomorrow,” he said on the Senate floor.
Without that agreement, the Senate will hold a next procedural vote on Sunday evening, a Senate Democratic aide said.
Republican Senator Bill Hagerty took to the Senate floor to underscore his opposition to expediting the process, saying the legislation would add to the national debt and set the stage for Democrats to move forward with a separate $3.5 trillion spending package which Republicans vehemently oppose.
OVERDUE INVESTMENTS
Explaining The Trump Tax Reform Plan
The Bottom Line
For most people, tax season comes to a close on April 15 each year. In 2019, many taxpayers were surprised to find they had to pay more taxes than the previous year, while others received significantly lower refund checks from the Internal Revenue Service even though their financial circumstances didn’t change.
Many tax specialists and accountants urged their clients to update their withholdings in order to avoid a hefty bill at tax time.
But how did this happen? Let’s take a closer look at President Trump’s changes to the tax codethe largest overhaul made in the last 30 yearsand how it impacts taxpayers and business owners.
Money To State And Local Governments
The $350 billion to help cash-strapped states, cities and tribal governments confronting the pandemic has drawn ire from Republicans.
Pointing to the ballooning national debt, GOP lawmakers say the state and local aid provision is an unnecessary part of a “liberal wish list” that would disproportionately benefit blue states that were quicker than red ones to shut down their economies and suffered larger financial loses.
More:Democrats want to send $350B to cities and states with Biden’s COVID-19 relief bill, but Republicans see it as wasteful
“They want to send wheelbarrows of cash to state and local bureaucrats to bail out mismanagement from before the pandemic,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Wednesday. “They’re changing the previous bipartisan funding formula in ways that will especially bias the money toward big blue states.”
Democratic lawmakers and a bipartisan coalition of mayors support the funding due to a double whammy saddling states and local government through no fault of their own: declining tax revenues from the economic shutdown and swelling public assistance needs.
More:Do states and cities ‘need’ Biden’s $350 billion in direct COVID-19 relief? It depends where you’re asking
Can A Reconciliation Bill Increase The Budget Deficit
Yes. Although the reconciliation process originally was viewed as a way to reduce budget deficits by cutting projected spending and raising revenues, it has been used to expedite passage of tax cuts that increase budget deficits. If reconciliation is used this year to enact some version of President Bidens COVID relief bill, it will increase budget deficits.
Although a reconciliation bill can increase near-term budget deficits, there are a couple of wrinkles. A Senate rule says that a reconciliation bill cannot, under congressional scoring, increase the deficit beyond the period specified in the resolution, usually ten years. Thats why the reconciliation bills that enacted the Bush and Trump tax cuts said that some of the tax cuts expire before the tenth year.
In addition, press reports suggest that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is considering invoking an obscure provision of the Congressional Budget Act that would essentially re-use the fiscal year 2021 budget resolution to allow for a majority in the Senate to approve Bidens big infrastructure package. Never used before, Section 304 says Congress may adopt a concurrent resolution on the budget which revises or reaffirms the concurrent resolution on the budget for such fiscal year most recently agreed to.
Rep John J Faso Of New York
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Faso also opposed curtailing the SALT deduction and said the bill contained too many loopholes. He ranks third on Roll Calls list of most vulnerable House incumbents. Trump carried his 19th District but the central New York district voted twice for former President Barack Obama. A crowded Democratic field is vying to take on the freshman lawmaker, with two contenders outraising Faso in the most recent fundraising quarter. Inside Elections rates the race Tilts Republican.
Rep Elise Stefanik Of New York
She joined her New York GOP colleagues in opposing the bill due to the changes made to the SALT deduction. The second-term congresswoman is head of recruitment for the National Republican Congressional Committee. She is also a DCCC target. Trump carried her upstate New York district by 14 points in 2016, and she was re-elected by 35 points. Inside Elections rates her race Solid Republican.
An Affinity For Small Business
Passing a law that helped fuel increases in stock prices wasnt the only way Republicans enriched themselves. The new law also contained a 20 percent deduction for income from so-called pass-through businesses, a provision called the crown jewel of the act by the National Federation of Independent Businesses, a lobbying group.
Pass-throughs are single-owner businesses, partnerships, limited liability companies and special corporations called S-corps. Most real estate companies are organized as LLCs. Trump owns hundreds of them, and Public Integritys analysis found that 22 of the 47 members of the House and Senate tax-writing committees in 2017 were invested in them.
Pass-throughs can be found in any industry. They pay no corporate taxes and steer their profits as income to business owners or investors, who are taxed only once at their individual rates. Despite their favored treatment as a business vehicle, the 2017 tax act did them another favor: It allowed 20 percent to be deducted off the top of the pass-through income for tax purposes.

No doubt. Johnson, with his wife, held interests that year in four real estate or manufacturing LLCs worth between $6.2 million and $30.5 million, from which they received income that year between $250,000 and $2.1 million, according to his financial disclosure form.
What Are The Main Changes
The corporate tax rate is getting slashed from 35 percent to 20 percent in 2019.
Companies can fully deduct business expenses from 2017 to 2022.
The level at which estate tax must be paid has jumped dramatically. Currently, heirs of estates valued more than $5.6 million must pay tax. The threshold has now increased to $11 million.
Child tax credit is increasing from $1,000 to $2,000 per child.
Pass-through businesses will get a 23 percent deduction.
The standard deduction for married couples is now $24,000 and $12,000 for singles.
Taxpayers will be able to deduct up to $10,000 in state property taxes.
Rep Frank A Lobiondo Of New Jersey
Petitioners ask Upton to vote against GOP tax reform bill
A member of the moderate Tuesday Group, LoBiondo opposed the tax bill because of the changes to the SALT deduction and said in a statement it would be detrimental to New Jersey residents. LoBiondo, who also opposed the GOP health care bill, recently announced he is not running for re-election, making his seat more vulnerable to a Democratic takeover. Trump carried his 2nd District by nearly 7 points in 2016. The race is rated Leans Republican.
Rep Rodney Frelinghuysen Of New Jersey
Frelinghuysens position was unknown heading into the final vote, but the House Appropriations chairman ended up opposing the bill. He is a DCCC target in 2018 and his race is rated Likely Republican. Two Democratic hopefuls have outraised him by nearly three times in the most recent fundraising quarter. Trump carried his 11th District by 1 point last fall while Frelinghusyen was winning a 12th term by 19.
Makes Research On Drugs For Rare Conditions More Expensive
Another provision buried in both the House and Senate tax bills would weaken or even eliminate altogether a tax credit that encourages pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs for so-called orphan medical conditionsrare conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Lou Gehrigs disease, and Job syndrome. This tax credit is especially important, as development of new drugs and treatments for rare conditions may not be in a pharmaceutical companys financial interest. Its elimination could mean that people with rare diseases or health conditions may never receive life-saving treatment.
Ends A Tax Credit That Spurs Investment In Struggling Communities
President Trump made saving and bringing back jobs in left-behind communities a cornerstone of his campaign. However, the House tax bill would eliminate the New Markets Tax Credit, which is dedicated to spurring investment in poor communities. Investors who qualify receive a tax credit to offset a portion of their investments in hard-hit rural or urban communities facing poverty rates of 20 percent or more. Over the years, the lions share of the funds paid out through the New Markets Tax Credit has benefited communities facing unemployment rates at least 1.5 times higher than the national average, poverty rates of at least 30 percent, or both.
Since people with disabilities face poverty rates that are nearly three times higher than the national average, as well as unemployment rates that are twice those of their nondisabled peers, they are likely to be especially hard hit by the elimination of this tax credit. What is more, high-poverty areas generally have higher rates of disability, in large part because poverty can limit access to health care and preventive services while simultaneously increasing an individuals chances of living and working in an environment that may adversely affect health.
Rep Dana Rohrabacher Of California
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rohrabacher told Roll Call before the vote that his vote would be determined by how his constituents would fare if the bill became law. He is one of the most vulnerable House members in 2018, in part because of his ties to Russia. He is a top DCCC target. Clinton carried his 48th District by 2 points in 2016 while Rohrabacher won re-election to a 15th term by 17 points. Inside Elections rates the race Tilts Republican.
Increases Income And Wealth Inequality
“Overall, the combined effect of the change in net federal revenue and spending is to decrease deficits allocated to lower-income tax filing units and to increase deficits allocated to higher-income tax filing units.–Congressional Budget Office“
The New York Times editorial board explained the tax bill as both consequence and cause of income and wealth inequality: “Most Americans know that the Republican tax bill will widen economic inequality by lavishing breaks on corporations and the wealthy while taking benefits away from the poor and the middle class. What many may not realize is that growing inequality helped create the bill in the first place. As a smaller and smaller group of people cornered an ever-larger share of the nation’s wealth, so too did they gain an ever-larger share of political power. They became, in effect, kingmakers; the tax bill is a natural consequence of their long effort to bend American politics to serve their interests.” The corporate tax rate was 48% in the 1970s and is 21% under the Act. The top individual rate was 70% in the 1970s and is 37% under the Act. Despite these large cuts, incomes for the working class have stagnated and workers now pay a larger share of the pre-tax income in payroll taxes.
In 2027, if the tax cuts are paid for by spending cuts borne evenly by all families, after-tax income would be 3.0% higher for the top 0.1%, 1.5% higher for the top 10%, -0.6% for the middle 40% and -2.0% for the bottom 50%.
The Political Power Of Business And The Donor Class
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provides a tremendous windfall for the already wealthy. The top 1 percent of earners can expect to take home, on average, an extra $51,140 each, according to the Tax Policy Centers calculations. One potential electoral effect of the TCJA, therefore, could be its impact on the political behavior of the rich, who make up the laws primary beneficiaries and who provide a growing percentage of campaign resources. The wealthy will both have more money as a result of the TCJA, andfor somemore incentive to engage in politics.
If the TCJA were to influence the campaign donation patterns of wealthy people, it would likely redound to the benefit of Republicans. First, though there are rich people in both the Democratic and Republican parties, wealthy people are more likely to be Republicans. Second, the cap on the state and local tax deduction in the TCJA was intentionally structured to provide less of a tax cut to wealthy people in high-tax blue states, where many rich Democrats reside. Finally, the wealthy are economically conservative, so the political incentive created by the legislation is more likely to motivate Republican donors to support their party, rather than to encourage Democratic donors to invest more than they otherwise would. Newsreportsconfirmthat some Republican donors did threaten to withhold their campaign support if a tax bill were not passed.
All Of The Above Is Acceptable
Republican lawmakers also boosted the value of their stock holdings when they encouraged American corporations to repatriate money they were holding overseas. The tax law decreed that future foreign profits would not be taxed at high rates, and that previously earned profits stashed abroad an estimated $2.7 trillion would be taxed one time at no more than 15.5 percent.
In 2017, Apple was sitting on $250 billion in overseas profits. In January 2018, the month after President Donald Trump signed the tax bill into law, the tech behemoth and third-largest American company said it would pay the new, lower tax and start bringing the cash home. Just four months later, Apple said it would buy back $100 billion of its stock and hike its dividend by 16 percent. Apple shares increased almost 9 percent by the weeks end. In April 2019, Apple announced $75 billion more in buybacks, a move analysts said would likely drive its stock price higher. A day after the announcement, shares increased in value nearly 5 percent. The stock continued to hit record highs late last year.

Tumblr media

Tumblr media

Tumblr media

Competitor research
I have chosen these brands because they have a lot of similarities with Oh Polly this means that I am able to compare how they work and are successful with my brand along with the competitors having some differences and to see how the differences impact Oh Polly and make it stand out compared to the competitors. All of these brands also decide to advertise and promote their business in very similar ways such as instagram and all of the social media platforms whilst working with famous influencers.
Tumblr media
House of CB
This is a company that has been around since 2010. It was founded by a 17 year old at the time called Conna Walker. The company started off as an online business just like Oh Polly. However, they have managed to build their company up over the years and succeeded into opening 5 stores in the UK and 2 in the US along with appearing in 50 Topshop stores. House of CB are known for their figure hugging tailored pieces. In 2016 they have introduced a sister brand called mistress rocks. The products House of CB produce are very similar to Oh Polly this is because they have high quality dresses and tailored pieces. The brand has also been able to expand its collection similar to Oh Polly by introducing shoes, swimwear and accessories. The customer audience for this brand is very very similar this is because they are the same age range and gender. The only thing that is different is that this brand is very high end and is more expensive therefore even though the customers are the same age range and are into similar things they have a lot more disposable income due to the fact that these garments are near enough double the amount of Oh Polly’s. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_CB)
Tumblr media
Topshop
Topshop is a multinational fashion retailer they have built the company up and now have over 500 stores of which around 300 are in the Uk and 200 are worldwide. This successful fashion retailer was founded in the 1960s and started off in a department store. By 1974 the department store started to close down and Topshop was put into the position of weather to open their own stores or not. They had started to become very successful in the first years of the company therefore they decided to take the jump and build their own stores. As you can see the company have been very successful and they have been able to build up an annual turnover of millions of pounds. The similarities that the company has with Oh Polly will be the customers this is because they target the exact same age range and the pricing of the products are very similar. However, the types of products that they sell are different Topshop sells a lot more casual and day to day products therefore the customer audience would tend to go to Topshop for their daily clothing and come to Oh Polly for evening wear and events wear. As Topshop has been around for many years now they have rebranded their company so many times and they have been able to continue with the customer audience and attract a lot more customers. (https://www.glamobserver.com/topshop-story-and-business/)
Tumblr media
Pretty Little Thing
They are a UK based fashion retailer aiming their sales at 14-24 year olds. The company is owned by the Boohoo group and have a main head office in Manchester along with other offices in Los Angeles and London. The brand was originally founded in 2012 by two brothers, they started as just an accessory brand. However, it has rapidly grown and has now become a major fast fashion brand in todays society. They sell a very wide range of garments such as some mega cheap ones that are low quality and fast to produce or some higher quality that cost a little bit more and are made with stronger fabrics. Fashion influencers such as Miley Cyrus, Michelle Keegan, Rita Ora, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj helped grown the brand when they promoted the company to their followers/ fans. The brand has now partnered with companies such as Asos and Lipsy whilst multinational brand Next sells their products on their website. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PrettyLittleThing ). I believe that this company has massively grown because of the influencers that have advertised it. Along with the way that they target their customer audience, what I mean by this is that they realise that the particular age range are either going to be students or just started careers therefore they wont have massive amounts of disposable income. The brand constantly are holding sales and limited time major discounts this boosts their sales as people see limited time and think they need to buy straight away along with helping by giving them an all year round student discount. Pretty little thing are one of the major fast fashion companies at the moment and I want to pick out what Oh Polly can do differently to this company in order to make them stand out. The packaging for Pretty Little thing is very basic and even though it is covered in their well known unicorn pattern. The material that they use for their packaging is plastic this is very bad for the environment and I would like to find a way in order to make a sustainable packaging or reusable packaging in order to make sure that Oh Polly isn't damaging the environment as much.
Tumblr media
Boohoo
Boohoo is are another popular fast fashion brand. They sell cheap and low quality clothing in order to make sure that they can keep up with the fast fashion industry they want to be able to make clothes fast and sell them fast therefore they aren’t always the best quality. It was founded in 2006 and was originally aimed at just females aged 16 - 30 however, over the years they have been able to produce a mens range called boohoo man who also provide cheap  and low quality fashion garments in order to be able to keep up with the evolving fast fashion industry. The price of the garments are overall very cheap and range between £5 - £30ish. The brand also constantly have deals and offers on which draw in the attention of customers and more sales as everyone loves a bargain buy. They sell all of their products online and have fast shipping which means that people get their garments within 2/3 days of ordering. The packaging for the brand is very similar to pretty little thing and this is plastic bags, this is because they are very cheap to buy I production and you can get a lot more for your money. I want to make sure that oh polly moves away from this as it will make the brand stand out amongst the other fast fashion brands. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boohoo.com

Taking Double Dipping To An Art Form: Are Townsville Airport Owners QAL Asking Us To Pay TWICE for their airport upgrade?
Its a genuine question now that the Townsville Airport has somehow managed to wangle a $50million low interest loan from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund (NAIF) for the terminal upgrade. You decide if youre being had. Also this week, try and blame this on evaporation the much-ballyhooed Strand lagoon on the Strand is reported to be a dead duck. And nothing to do with the floods The Pie hears this unicorn project from a financially wobbly council was scuttled mid-last year. And seems one TCC councillor will be calling it quits at the next election. And the council offers it;s own classic Whos on first comedy routine when asked a simple question by a ratepayer. And an unmistakable message to ISIS maniacs who now want to return home. But first Why Outsiders See Some Queenslanders As Special as in safety helmet and crayons special. One moment their a dangerous pest that should be culled, and the next well The good folks of Cardwell are mourning the loss of Bismarck, the reputedly 100 year old croc that has patrolled Cardwells off-shore water front for years, keeping other more aggressive animals out of his territory. Understandably, the locals loved Bismarck albeit from a sensible distance, were outraged when some knuckle-dragging drongo used the old croc for target practice.
Tumblr media
Now, in the best tradition of what is known as recreational grief in a town where there isnt ever a lot to do, a memorial dayis plannedBismarck which may eventually result in a more tangible reminder. At least, according to Bentley.
Tumblr media
An interesting, quirky story, but not as quirky as the Astonishers usual grasp of basic maths , the numbers thingy has brought them undone again. Magpies Nest regular commenter Peewee Herman didnt miss them when he sent this in: Peewee Herman Submitted on2019/03/05 at 8:31 am Iconic crocodile? Page 7 of todays papers has a story with the headline Iconic saltie feared killed that starts THERE are fears an iconic North Queensland saltwater crocodile has been shot and killed. It then goes on to quote a police officer Sgt Gillinder said police were yet to determine if the 4.5m crocodile had been shot, died of natural causes or been killed by a rival. Okay, so its 4.5m long, weve established that quite easily thanks to the police who have also got no idea how it died. THEN we have this ripper par It is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 to take an estuarine crocodile without authority and there are greater penalties in place for the unlawful take of an iconic crocodile, defined as 5m or greater in length. The maximum penalty for the unlawful take of an iconic crocodile is $28,383.75. So hang on, weve got a 4.5m dead croc which clearly isnt iconic (because its not 5m or longer), we dont know how it died but we are subjected to more moronic garbage from the Astonisher who dont seem to have a single clue even when its spelled out in THEIR OWN STORY! As The Pie has said elsewhere, it would seem the papers continual incorrect overuse of the word iconic is now iconic of the Bulletins sloppy stupidity. What Townsville Today Can Learn From Chicago Then Back early last century, world heavyweight champ James J Corbett had to endure the downside of the fame his sport brought. Every barroom brawler in America would try to pick a fight with him, to either have a shot at being able to brag they decked the former world champ, or just boast down the years about the time Corbett decked them.
Tumblr media
Boxer James Corbett Corbett generally avoided such confrontations, more often than not with good humour. On one occasion, in a Chicago bar, one bantam weight challenger, a small, wiry guy who boasted he was faster and quicker than the champ because he had won several amateur lightweight titles, persisted in taunting Corbett, up to and including dancing up besides the big several times, and throwing real punches into his arm and body. Corbett stoically ignored the pest, but finally, beer in hand, he turned to face his tormentor, and told him If you hit me one more time Id better not find out about it, or youre in trouble. The Pie was put in mind of this when reading about a non-existent stoush between Qantas and the rapacious grasping efforts of Queensland Airports Limited to impose a ticket tax so passengers fund work that will benefit the companys bottom line.
Tumblr media
Iditor Jenna Cairney is what we kids knew in playgrounds as a promoter, a third party urging two others to have a fight. Qantas has been and remains James J Corbett in this updated scenario, imperiously swatting away would-be barroom pests like QAL boss Chris Mills, the gormless and mostly irrelevant QAL office boy in Townsville Kevin Gill and our own dear Mayor Mullet, who caused great mirth in Qantas HQ and deep embarrassment in this city by calling for a boycott because Qantas wouldnt agree to tax her citizens and visitors to her city with a ticket tax (an issue with which she as mayor had no business shit stirring about, and shouldve vehemently opposed). But her gal pal forever willing to don the jesters motley and belled cap, Jenna Cairney is again trying to talk up faux controversy in the hope of sales and good favour from the power elite. But its instructive to take a look at QALs other development in its network, the $380million expansion of its Gold Coast Airport. Theyve just signed a deal with Lendlease for the whizz bang upgrade, a very well worthwhile project for the premier tourist strip.
Tumblr media
And taking a look at crucial aspects of this project is very informative, in relation to the aspirations for their Townsville Airport. The Gold Coast operation is in a competitive arena, vying with Brisbane for passengers, and therefore needs to upgrade to boost their through-put. Townsville is not in competition with anyone, it is a monopoly in a vastly smaller market and is already subsidized to an extent by public money, in the form of a deal with the RAAF.It appears to be in QALs DNA to get any enhancement to their assets bottom line to be paid by the public, and they make no bones about it. This from a QAL question and answer release about the Goldie project: Who will pay for the project? Will Gold Coast Airport passengers pay more as a result? When Project LIFT is approved by the Australian Government and proceeds to construction, the project will be undertaken by GCAPL in its role as specialist operator. As with any major development, GCAPL as the proponent will seek to recover the costs of the development over its operational life. We will do this through revenue from commercial developments on the Airport as well as Airport charges. And, according to QAL boss Mills, this is the formula they want to apply to the vastly different case for Townsville. But allow The Magpie, no accountant he by any means, ask this: If we, as taxpayers, have already lent QAL the bulk of this money through the recently announced $50million NAIF low interest loan, why does the company think it is OK to charge US to pay back what WE have loaned THEM? As Dame Edna says, Spooky, eh, possums? Note That QAL Head Honcho Is Now On The Scene Maybe Gill Is Being Sidelined. But asking questions like this is going to have Kevin Rhymes With Gill wringing his hanky in knocked-kneed dismay. Last year, he had a public sniffle which was clearly heaping hot coals on the Magpies blameless head when he told BD Magazine: The toxic cycle of social media and those feeding off it are harming our city. Those types of people are just negative, theyre not representative of Townsville. They may look representative because its so easy and its anonymous, but we need to switch off to that. Reasonable complaints and feedback is fine, but this horrid stuff is too toxic to let in. Harming our city? Oh, Kevvy this self-serving tosh from a man who wont answer a straight question about the upgrade when faced with a list of queries n the ticket tax upgrade from former journo Doug Kingston, Gill wanted a closed door meeting to discuss them. Doug said no, he wanted the answers out in public. No meeting open or otherwise ever happened. But look, maybe The Pie should dial down the rhetoric a bit, he has been chastised by one reader for rushing to criticise Mr Gill. Perhaps a more conciliatory, philosophical approach is called for, so

A Footnote Interesting to note one of the NAIF board members is this bloke

Not surprising that Mr Rolfe is kindly disposed towards airports he is also a board member of NQ Airports, which owns Cairns and Mackay. Wonder why he has a soft spot for Townsville Airport, though, since the $55million Cairns airport upgrade currently underway will be fully funded by NQ Airports! And their PR people tell The Pie no ticket tax is even contemplated, let alone a NAIF loan. How do they do it? The Unicorn Rainbow Fart Of The Week. As we know, a mirage is an optical illusion of atmospheric conditions, especially the appearance of a sheet of water caused by the refraction of light by heated air. Water? Illusion? Hot air? No description is more fitting for the unicorn rainbow fart of a 10 hectare lagoon for the Strand.

Even the artists impression in the Bulletin at the time was lifted from a Cairns project. Of all the things that this town needs to be realized, this shiny beads and blankets offering to the electorates natives was perhaps the most egregious. It seemed unlikely from the outset, and now seems to have been quietly dropped from Mayor Mullets regular mewlings. Perhaps this is why. The Pie understands that a prominent citizen (a genuine leading citizen, who employs many people and invests his own money in this town) decided to put an apartment in Mariners North on the market. But in the middle of last year, he withdrew it because the Strand lagoon proposal suddenly came out of nowhere. He figured such a scheme would add considerable value to the property if he sat tight for a while. However, when he made some further high level inquiries hes the sort of bloke who has this level of access and quickly learned that the proposal was largely bullshit, he promptly put the property back on the market and sold it a month later, about August last year. So keep this timeline in mind if Mayor Mullet or any of her pack of urgers tries to tell you that the lagoon project has been delayed/abandoned because of the January flood the lagoon was long gone from the drawing board before Jenny managed to create her own temporary lagoon and canal estates out of several usually dry suburbs. Then There Were Nine
Tumblr media
Did you notice that Clr Murray Soars sounded a tad exasperated with the high-handed state governments jack-booting decision to plonk a five storey up-market flop-house for young people in the middle of Aikenvale.? Soars told the Bulletin he had delivered a letter from the mayor to the member for Brisbane who lives in Mundingburra Coralee ORort, objecting to the planned project. Neat move by the old Mullet, no dill she, because it makes it look like shes championing the locals but since she doesnt have a real say in a state matter, she chumship with Premier Alphabet will not be dented. A sorry Soars told the Astonisher: We [on Thursday] presented [Mundingburra MP] Coralee ORourke with a letter signed by the Mayor objecting to this structure in its format that theyre suggesting, he said. Essentially no councillor was advised of this program. We are a toothless tiger unfortunately, its just the way the Act is written. Not that Maurie gives much of a toss anyway, word is that he will bail before March next year, having done his bit as a desperate lasted minute inclusion drafted onto Team Mullet, when Jenny has been rebuffed by a number of other choices asked to plug the vacant team spot. But when you resign Maury, whatever you do, dont shed any tears, otherwise you will forever be get the nickname Weeping which would be most unfortunate, Mr Soars, if you get my drift. Communication Breakdown: A Conversation With The Council Regular Nest correspondent The Wulguru Wonder was indeed left wondering during the week, after trying to tease out an answer to the simplest of questions from the TCCs open and transparent media people. The WW was a bit confused by this TCC media release during the week. Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill has welcomed the announcement of $1.96 million in Federal funding for the Castle Hill Concept Plan as part of Townsville 2020 vision for our city. Id like to thank the Federal Government for their funding commitment for the Castle Hill Concept Plan, Cr Hill said. The Castle Hill Concept Plan includes a vivid-style light show installation, a caf at the summit, a zipline and a pedestrian connection to Walker Street. The Castle Hill project is a key part of the Townsville 2020 Master Plan and vision for our city, Cr Hill said. The Wulguru Wonder thought this a bit ambiguous; was the money was for the concept plan, or for the actual elements mentioned in the plan (ziplines, food trucks, a footpath to the top from CBD). He decided to make a polite inquiry of the council, and enjoyed this chat for his trouble.

laurel a If you think the Townsville Council sometimes acts like the Mafia, there is one big difference the council makes you an offer you cant understand. Speaking Of Which .. A most enlightening comment sent in today from Mark Harvey, a former pooh-bah in the councils water area. Mark wrote: The Water Supply (S&R) Act is the head of power for TCC to apply a water restriction. S41 details that the only time a restriction can be applied is: Urgent need (ie something broke); if the available water supply has fallen to such a level that unrestricted use is not in the best public interest (40% in RRD in the current policy); or if the restriction is an essential part of a comprehensive demand management strategy. This is why the 2015 restriction policy did away with the old permanent Level 1 restriction it was illegal. The intention at the time was that when restrictions were lifted we would go to Permanent Water Saving Measures simple non-mandatory ways of saving water: do not water during the heat of the day and you do not need to water more than 3 times per week. Following odds and evens is sensible if everyone waters on the same day you get a drop in water pressure, and it gives the system operators a low demand Monday during which major works are conducted. So now the dam is full and we have Water Conservation Measures which according to the Council resolution are interim until the 3 point plan is implemented. Apparently good practice has an end date! The resolution makes no reference to restrictions at all. The summary does however state that the measures allow watering over 3 days on odds and evens. It is reasonable to assume that they do not allow watering at other times, and therefore constitute a restriction. This is also supported by the language in the promotional material, which would lead the average resident to believe that these are in fact a restriction. By the wording of the resolution, I do not believe that this was intended to be a legitimate restriction under the Act. I am sure it could be legally argued however that the language makes it a restriction even if it is not badged as one, and it could therefore be alleged that it is an illegal restriction. Any legal opinion out there? Miracles Yet Remain To Cease

Craig Gore has returned to face trial on multiple fraud charges. Many folk, including The Magpie, were skeptical when last December Gore was refused to allow to leave the country one day and the next, had his passport returned by the very same judge, allowing him to skedaddle forthwith to the bosom of his tax-evading missus in Sweden. The deal was that he return after three months to face trial on charges of swindling $800,000 from self-managed fund investors in 2013-14. We all thought that was going to be the start of Skase Redux, with the taxpayer facing a hefty legal bill for extradition proceedings. But no, our man hopped off his return flight as scheduled, and he appeared in court on time last Wednesday., where the judge set a trial date of September 23, with a pre-trial hearing on May 24. But in the past, Gore has proven to be smarter than the average outhouse rodent, and may have productively used his time in Sweden to work out a family move to a non-extradition country and then wheedle his way into another conjugal visit before the trial starts. Gore is a grub of such ego that jail time certainly does not suit his lifestyle, and he certainly has plenty stashed away. Hence the cynicism. A Note On Climate Change The debate on climate change goes on, and gets more confusing every day.

What Grocery Stores Won’t Tell You About Plastic
Huge companies like Walmart could slash single-use plastics if they really wanted to.
It’s next to impossible to be a plastic-free grocery shopper. Unless you live near a boutique store that offers goods naked, you likely don’t have much choice about buying food wrapped in plastic netting or transparent film.
Walk into any of the biggest grocery chains in the United States, and you’ll see row upon row of items in containers and bags that are designed to be used once and trashed. Americans produced 14.7 million tons of such waste in 2015, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Of that, only 14.6% was recycled.
Plastic is necessary for boosting the shelf life of perishable foods, without adding much to the sticker price. Getting rid of it entirely isn’t realistic. But there is a growing consensus that companies responsible for creating this packaging overuse plastics and could easily cut down on the amount sold to consumers.
Shoppers can petition and tweet all they want about reducing packaging waste, but grocery store chains have a far bigger voice that could be put to use. And none would be louder than mega-grocers like Walmart. These massive companies have started taking small steps to address plastic use, though advocates say they could be doing more ― if they really wanted to.
“They are the interface and broker between the makers of plastic consumer goods and the individuals buying those goods,” Nicholas Mallos, director of the Trash Free Seas Alliance at the Ocean Conservancy, told HuffPost. That role gives retailers “great power” in the fight against plastic waste, he said.
Walmart probably has the greatest influence of any grocer in the country. Around 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart, and most locations offer groceries at cut-rate prices. The company sold $184 billion worth of food in the United States last year, easily outstripping its next biggest rival, Kroger, with $121 billion in sales.
“No other corporation in history has ever amassed this degree of control over the U.S. food system,” according to a June report by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance on Walmart’s dominance of local grocery businesses.
Walmart is also the world’s largest retailer overall, with hundreds of billions of dollars in annual purchasing power.
“Walmart has the ability to influence the supply chain, not just for its own-brand products but with large consumer goods companies,” David Pinsky, a researcher at Greenpeace, told HuffPost.
By and large, he said, major retailers haven’t done much with their considerable influence to crack down on plastic. Though most of these large retailers including Walmart have made some kind of public commitment to reduce packaging waste, their pledges fall far short of what’s needed to stem the tide of plastics that end up in landfills or incinerators, escape into the environment and contribute to climate change.
Walmart did not respond to HuffPost’s repeated requests for comment. However, the company has made previous public statements about its attempts to limit plastic waste like recycling, for example. Walmart, along with several other retailers, participates in the How2Recycle labeling program, which helps people navigate America’s confusing recycling requirements by printing simple instructions right on product packages that explain how to properly dispose of them.
But helping people become better recyclers don’t fix a major problem with recycling facilities themselves: Most of them can’t process the packaging we try to recycle, so they have to send it to a landfill. In addition, recyclables in the United States are often shipped to developing nations, where they might end up being dumped or burned illegally.
“No amount of labeling will solve broken recycling systems,” Pinsky and co-author James Mitchell wrote in a June report by Greenpeace assessing U.S. retailers’ efforts to address plastic pollution.
On the other hand, major retailers could achieve much more by forcing suppliers to use a minimum amount of post-consumer recycled content in their packaging, Mallos said. While that’s still a recycling-focused strategy, it creates demand for existing recyclable plastic that has nowhere to go. It also supports the construction of better recycling infrastructure. A handful of major producers, including Unilever North America, are already moving aggressively in this direction. Walmart has made a more modest commitment: By 2025, the retail chain wants its proprietary brands to come packaged in 20% post-consumer recycled materials. (This figure is “painfully inadequate,” Pinsky wrote in the Greenpeace report.)
Walmart has not even pledged to stop handing out plastic shopping bags, one of the easiest nonessential plastics to cut. Top retailers like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have already nixed plastic shopping bags from their stores. Last year, Kroger announced that it would follow suit by 2025. In comparison, Walmart said it will train employees to use fewer plastic bags at checkout.
Although Walmart said it also wants to promote more environmentally friendly packaging, existing efforts at other grocers are controversial. Whole Foods, for example, offers compostable containers in its prepared foods departments, but this doesn’t make much of a difference if there aren’t local industrial composting facilities available, Mallos said.
Walmart and a number of other major companies have also signed on to join multiple efforts that bring together business leaders, government officials, environmental activists and scientists to study plastic pollution and search for solutions. But Walmart is also a member of the Plastics Industry Association, a lobbying group that has spent millions fighting plastic bag bans, according to The Intercept.
While many of the country’s biggest grocers dither, smaller stores are actually getting their suppliers to cut out more plastic. So-called “zero waste” shops are popping up all around the world, eschewing plastic packaging and encouraging the use of reusable containers.
Kate Marnach, who co-opened the Minneapolis-based Tare Market in April, said she thinks it’s the responsibility of retailers to challenge the system. “Sometimes, it’s just a matter of asking your vendors, ‘Can this be done a different way?’ rather than just accepting the way it’s been done,” she said.
Her store doesn’t offer to produce, but she said businesses often bag fruits and veggies simply for the convenience of using a barcode on multiple items at once. Selling produce without packaging should be simple, she said.
Things are trickier for perishables. Meats, for instance, need some kind of packaging to keep them fresh. Still, there might be less single-use trash if stores let people provide their own reusable packages. Metro, one of Canada’s biggest grocers, started a pilot program in Quebec earlier this year that allows consumers to bring their own containers and resealable plastic bags to buy meat, seafood, deli items, prepared foods, and pastries.
In the United States, however, guidelines on containers that are brought from home differ from state to state, so large grocers tend to discourage it. Pinsky thinks retailers should instead work with regulators to find common ground on plastic waste.
Zero waste retailers have become increasingly more outspoken about packaging requirements. Lyndsey Manderson, a co-founder of ZERO Market in Boulder, Colorado, said she thinks many of the state’s food container rules are unnecessary. She wants to start selling food at her waste-free store, but she doesn’t want her customers to take it home in single-use packaging. Other states are more flexible about shoppers bringing containers from home, and Manderson is trying to get her local legislators to consider different rules. She is also considering a deposit system, in which consumers could pay a small fee for containers that are later returned, sterilized and reused just like the returnable bottles of the early 20th century.
As for consumers navigating the minefield of single-use plastic at grocery stores, Pinsky and Mallos recommend speaking to store managers, voicing concerns about plastic waste, and perhaps requesting unwrapped produce, shelf-stable foods in bulk, or permission to use their own containers from home.
“It may seem insignificant, one single request,” Mallos said. But if decision-makers at retailers keep hearing the same asks, he said, it is a “very strong signal” that consumers want change.
