it's kinda funny that the commentaries are very much "oh my god so much wasn't planned and was made up as they went along, how did the show end up as good as it was???" and then you learn that alex was super good at improv during school

#like yeah the other writers did a bunch of work too a bunch of the big eps was literally all the writers working on them #but my perspective was forever changed by the fact that last mabelcorn was literally written by alex in a day #due to being dissatisfied with the wendy ep they were struggling with so he just. wrote an entire ep by himself in a frenzy???#like what?????#and the fact that it ends up being such a crucial ep its so baffling that it too wasnt planned out #cos like the roadtrip ep was something they always wanted to do and settled on being the calm before the storm #so really we got dd&md which is essential for ford's characterisation and him bonding with dipper #and then stanchurian candidate which is stan's inferiority complex and is essential to w3 #(personally i think they really needed like 2 or 3 more eps before d+m vs the future)
