“You were right, Antsy,” he said. “I’m the tree.” “What?” “The tree. The one that falls in the forest. The one that no one’s there to hear.”

#the schwa was here#neal shusterman#this book is probably my fav of neal shusterman's (yes that means above unwind) and as i'm thinking about it#it may be one of my fav kids books period. i read and reread and reread it so much so that the spine of my copy is weak#i always wondered how you could draw someone who is described as 'functionally invisible' or 'observationally challenged'#so i decided to go the route of lineless art for the schwa and keeping his colors similar to the background#and then making antsy's colors much more bold in comparision#so he's there but he's deliberately blending in#but yeah this story about a boy who first befriends this cryptid invisible-man kid as a joke#but then slowly turns into a mission to shine a light on said invisible kid and solve the mystery of his existence?#idk why but that really got to me as a middle schooler and it's for sure a book that'll always have a place in my heart#antsy bonano#calvin schwa#my art#(hopefully any other fans of this book notice the 'eyes the same color as the sky' detail!#i wasn't sure what quote to use but the lines from the billboard scene always make me feel sad. so.
