"Why the actual fuck is dating so goddamn hard?" You asked, falling face first on our best friend's couch of his shared apartment, comforted by the vanilla smell the cushions had thanks to the spray his roommate used every once in a while.
"Dating is not hard, Y/N, only your love life makes it look like that." Hyunjin says in a muffled tone, a donut between his teeth as he sat down on the chair
Maybe it was, yeah, maybe you were just damned to have the worst love life amongst your friends, having attended more wedding in the past two years from your friends and your older acquaintances than you'd like, not having a partner in quite a while and all of the dates you went to ending up horribly.
Like the one you had the night before, when the guy straight up acted like a jerk the whole dinner and dared to leave you at the restaurant. Still, you wanted a good love life.
"Oh? So, it's my fault now?" You say with a faux outraged tone, your eyes squinting to him, who shrugged his shoulders at your words. "Then why are you still single? Mr. Dates-are-so-easy?" You tease, body moving in a lazy manor to sit up on the couch like a decent human being.
"That's- that's because I want to be single." He clears his throat, swallowing the bite of chocolate donut. "But if I wanted to, I would actually have a girlfriend right now, or a boyfriend, if we are getting in there too." He points at you with the bitten donut, as if proving a point that wasn't actually there.
You rolled your eyes, not daring to fight him back because you could kind of grant him what he said. Hyunjin was quite handsome, and his tall frame usually dragged the attention of multiple girls and some boys every time you two hung out in between classes. And, besides that physical fact, he was really funny and nice to be around.
But still, just because he was pretty, he couldn't mean that he can just pull of a partner if he wants to. Your mind kind of upset (in a jokingly way) that he was implying you couldn't even wanting to.
It cannot be that easy, not even for him. You thought.
"Well, Mr. I-can-get-whoever-I-want, why don't you go on a date then? It's been more than six whole months from your last date with that Ryujin girl, and guess what, it ended up in nothing." You dared, a diverted tone in your voice, making him look at you quizzingly before scoffing.
"It didn't went anywhere because I couldn't see the two of us as a couple, we are even friends now!" He defended, taking a sip of his coffee before continuing eyes never leaving yours in a try not to lose the idea. "Why do you want me to date so bad? Are you so sick of my single ass being there for you when your dates go south?"
"Kinda, yeah, but that's far from what I'm saying, I'm just trying to prove a point here mister." You say, fingers moving in a manner that signaled the whole room.
"And what point is that because I'm kinda not getting it."
"That dating is not easy, even for you, and that you are single because of that." Your words were emphases at your convenience, making him raise an eyebrow in a fun gesture, finding the whole situation rather funny, just as you did.
"And how are we proving that?" He asks, voice full of a challenging tone, upper body leaning over until his elbows rest on his knees.
"Let's go on a double date, this Friday, you find someone to go on a date with and I do too, and let's see who manages to achieve a second date." You say after thinking it a bit. "But none of those fangirls of yours, someone neither of us know."
"Same to you then, but what do we gain here?"
"I'll buy you that paint we saw on the store the other day."
"The expensive ones?" He questions, amused but a bit interested.
"Those." You nod, making his eyes wide a bit under the strands of his blond hair that fell over his forehead.
"And what's in for you?"
"Besides the satisfaction of proving my point, you'll owe me a meal." You say, a playful smirk not painting your face, mirroring the one he sports as he tends his hand out for you.
"Deal."
"Perfect."
"The ate must be after 5 o'clock tho, I have a class before then." He says, taking in your nod before resuming your evening as you usually do, zapping through the channels in search of the murder investigations' one.
Was this a good idea?
Next Friday, 5:47 p.m.
This was the most stressing idea you've ever had.
You had found a cute guy that wanted to go on a date with you, Seo Changbin, but now, sat on your mattress and looking at your closet you had no idea on what to wear.
Why were you even trying so much? You barely knew Changbin, having shared a class with him the prior semester in which he was the teacher assistant and apparently, those months being enough for him to be interest in you in the date type of interest after talking to him as almost friends for a while. But you never use to put too much effort in what you wear, liking how you looked on almost all of your clothing. Then again, if this was not the son of the president, why did you felt so pressured to look good?
Maybe it could've been that this date is not only- no, hell no, you were not dressing up for Hyunjin, he was your bestie, he has seen you in sweats and old paint-stained shirt more than actually dressed up, why the actual hell would you try to impress him? You should impress Changbin, not your best friend.
"Fuck it" You condemn, standing up and picking an black bomber jacket that fitted you a bit too wide but still looked good and kept you warm from the night cold, some light makeup, shoes with a tiny bit of a platform and of we go.
Don't overthink it, don't overthink it, don't overthink it, don't overthink it. You repeat to yourself as your pack your essential stuff on your purse, just before the sound of the apartment phone pulls you out of your thoughts. "Oh, oh" You said, rushing to "Hello?" You ask, pressing the phone between your shoulder and your ear as you close your purse and check all of your apartment in search of anything to fix before going away.
"Y/N? It's me, Changbin, I'm outside of your building."
"Oh sure, I'm coming, give me a minute."
"Okay, I'll wait here." He says before you hung up, gathering your keys, and turning off the light before leaving, and in a matter of three minutes you are at the lobby, greeted by the doorman and spotting Changbin smiling at you from the sidewalk.
"Hi."
"You look really pretty." He says, checking you out with a smile.
"You too look quite handsome." You smile back, liking the way he was so casual about complimenting you. "Should we get going?"
"Of course, ma'am." He says, bowing as he opened the door of the passenger side of his car. "Your carriage is here."
Maybe this won’t be a bad date.
Friday, 7:38 p.m.
You had arrived at the restaurant an hour and a half ago, almost as the same time as Hyunjin and his date had.
Hyunjin's date was a beautiful girl who held both an adorable and attractive aura around her, Minjeong, she had said to you, and damn, did she look good by your friend's side. But him, he looked different, he did not look as proud as you'd had though he could, holding a small smile against his lips as he has her arms interlocked in his, looking at you.
Now, more than halfway through the double date as your plates of food slowly get empty you have that obnoxious feeling that Hyunjin will win.
He had Minjeong wrapped around his finger and you could easily notice that by the way she looked at him and how he treated her just made the sparkles in her eyes shine a tiny bit more and her smile turn a millimeter wider, feeling a bit of some weird feeling in your belly as you looked at them, enjoying the date, realizing that Hyunjin was right, for him dates were easy, and if he wanted he could have a partner right now.
And it isn't that you aren’t enjoying the date, you are, genuinely thinking this is by far one of the most fun and easy going dates you've been in, having not thought of running away just yet. Changbin was actually a really nice man, funny, handsome, fit, and with manners, he was amazing. You could swear to anything above that on a single date with him alone you could easily get more. But as of now, the weird feeling you have is twisting your stomach in weird ways, making you almost unable to want another date with him even if it seemed like an amazing idea.
Why would this happen to you?
You were so absorbed in trying to pinpoint your emotions that you didn't notice when both Changbin and Hyunjin had paid for each half of the food, snapping out as everyone got up from their seats, Changbin kindly taking your jacket off the back of your chair and placing it in your shoulders, his warm and welcoming smile spreading out to your own face, lips mirroring it.
"I think it’s time we part ways." Hyunjin started, hands on his pockets as Minjeong stood beside him, a friendly smile on her pretty features.
"It was nice meeting you two." She says kindly.
"Same to the both of you." Changbin says, nodding to Hyunjin.
"Have a goodnight, guys." You say before they turn away, heading to Hyunjin's car just as you and Changbin do the same, walking silently to his car.
"Thank you for the date." He says from the driver seat, turning the engine of as you park in front of your department complex.
"I should thank you; it was really cute and fun-"
"I don't think we should do it again." He says, looking over at you with guilty eyes.
"Wh- what do you mean? Did I do something?"
"Don't get me wrong, you are an amazing girl and all, and I really enjoyed our date too, but I can't get in between you and your friend like that."
"Me and my... Hyunjin? What does that even mean?"
"Yes, him, I'm not stepping there, I don't belong there." He says, with seriousness but at the same time not pressuring you, at all, and it felt nice.
"There's nothing between us tho, we are best friends." You explain, utterly confused where all of if this was coming from.
"You are sure you don't feel anything for him?" He interrogates you, not weirded out, or accusingly, his voice holding more of a knowing tone, matching the look in his eyes as his eyebrow raises.
"No I... I don't."
"What did you felt today on our date?" He asks again, a hand on the steering wheel but car still turned off.
Fuck, not even you knew, but you hated the idea of him noticing how you didn't felt like how you were supposed to, how he did.
"You didn't look like feeling quite the date, you know? Zoning out a bit much and looking at Hyunjin a bit too." He starts, a tiny smirk on his face, taking in the way you look surprised and somewhat flustered by the topic.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be, we are not together or anything, this was just a date, just trying to get each other better, not strings attached." He says, his words actually sticking in your brain, sinking in and relieving some wight you felt. "And what I learnt from you today, is that you have some denial in you, girl." The smiles he wears makes you feel at ease, quite more than you should considering the situation of your date interrogating your feelings.
"I don't know what you are talking about, Changbin."
"You are quite more discreet than Hyunjin tho, and quite distracted if I may say. But I saw the way he looks at you, Y/N, and I'm not daring to get in there, I'm not cruel." How Hyunjin looks at you? How did he looked at you that you didn't notice?
"Way more discreet? How do I look at him that makes you think this?" You can't help but ask, your mind passing through hundreds of different ideas per second.
"It’s weird to say it considering I was your date, but you looked at him like he was your world, and dude I would die for someone to look at me like that." He says calmly, the way he is talking about this so easily making your kind of concerned. "Y/N, do you love Hyunjin?"
"of course, I do, we're-"
"No, you know what I mean."
"I. I don't know, ok? We0ve been friends for so long I never questioned what I felt."
"Well, question it then." He deadpans before getting of the car, circling it to open your door, but you don't get off immediately.
What was Hyunjinto you?
He was your best friend, obviously, he has been ever since high school when you poured strawberry smoothie over the two of you in the hallway and he overreacted as the drama queen he is.
He has always been there for you, your first break up, your graduation day, when you two got into college together, when you got your first pregnancy scare, everywhere and any when, he was there for you, and you were there for him.
You loved him, just like you said, but you never thought deep on that love, always filing it as platonic. But now- now it didn't felt so platonic, the turmoil in your stomach during the dinner, the stress before the date, fuck, even the time you got a bit upset of his date with Ryujin, all of it slowly falling into place like a big puzzle.
And fucking hell, you loved loved Hyunjin, you were in love with your best friend all along.
"Shit, what am I supposed to do now?" You said, looking po at the man on your side, who smiled warmly as you stepped out the car.
"Maybe you should go for it?" He starts with some doubt, not sure on what proceeds. "It will always be up to you at the end."
"God, okay okay, thank you Changbin and... I'm so sorry, you are amazing I swear but-"
No, don't, I get it, maybe we can stay as friends? Taking advantage of how there aren’t any feeling between us right now."
"Sure! Yeah of course, I'd love to be friends." You nod quickly, a small smile on your lips as your heart still beats fast of your realization.
"Well, see y-" He starts, closing the door you just stepped out of.
"Hold on, can you make me a favor? Before letting you be."
Friday, 8:24 p.m.
The thumping of your platforms resonated through the hallways of the building, the only day you need to get to his apartment on the eleventh floor the elevator is only working to the seventh, making you run up five stores of stairs, your heart beating fast and panting.
After your sudden realization, courtesy of Changbin and his psych session, he drove you all the way to Hyunjin's building, an urge of telling him everything you realized flooding your veins and nerves.
706...
708...
710.
Here, now facing his apartment door, breath heavy and a hand against the door frame, your free hand up to knock on the door but stopping midtrack.
Was he even home? Has he already ended your date with Minjeong? Because that you did didn't meant he did too. Fuck, now what? What if he wasn't home? What if the date with her functioned? What were you going to do with your feelings if Changbin just read him wrong?
Your chest tightened, your anxious thought flooding your mind before the door opened before you, greeted by Hyunjin who now wore some sweats and a plain white T-shirt, his hair falling messily over his face.
"Y/N? What are you doing here? Did Changbin-"
"Shut up." You say, stepping in as he moved aside, confusion written all over your face.
"What's going on?"
"I know the reason my dates never worked out."
"Oh, you do?"
"It's you, you are the reason Hyunjin."
"M-"
"Stop interrupting. You are the reason I never get a second or third date, I... I've been so in love with you I just closed of feeling anything for anyone else. You were right here all the time and I just tried to fill in the space I unconsciously assumed you'd never want to take. Fuck, I compared everyone to you, I always hoped for someone to be like you." You ranted, spilling all of what you were feeling before he could even close the door all the way, froze in his place as his brown eyes looked into yours, finding some sort of signal you were serious.
"And I know I may be too late, but after talking to Changbin and remembering all of what I've felt and did today I come to realize Hyunjin. I love you. And I don't care if I'm late and you don’t, I wanted to take it out."
"I've waited so damn much to hear you say that..." He mutters, a sense of happiness so big inside of him he felt overwhelmed in the best way possible. "I- I'm so happy right now I could kiss you right where you are."
"Go ahead then." And that's all it took, all it took for Hyunjin to walk to you, large hands cupping your face in the sweetest way ever, kiss pressing into yours into a kiss you hadn't realized how much you needed, all your worries and weird feeling being replace by an immense love and adoration, a hand of yours flying to his blonde hair as the other cradled his jaw, trying to express all you felt for him now that you knew.
It wasn't until you were in absolute need to breathe that you separated. "God, that was so much better than I imagined."
"Wait, what about Minjeong?"
"She talked about a second date, but I cut her off, I... I just couldn’t do that to her." He says, thumb caressing your cheek as his eyes shone with so much adoration. "I couldn't date her or anyone when I'm in love with you."
"How long have you known?" You couldn't help but ask, hands still over him and taking a bit of a distance to look at his face perfectly.
"For two years at most; when I went and picked you up from that club date you had with that jerk, I realized I hated seeing you cry, and how much I wanted to be the reason of your smile." He chuckled at the end, leaning against your forehead again, enjoying the contact, hands slowly getting off your cheeks, unto cupping your jaw.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"You kept going on dates, what you expected me to do?" He said, the brightness in his pupils never leaving.
"Fuck, you're right I guess." You huff, chuckling and looking down for a seconds before looking up again."
"But I’m glad you know now, better late than never, don’t you think?" His voice was so sweet and full of love you felt like melting against his touch, all the emotions he couldn't express before hitting you like a truck, but you didn't mind.
"I can’t believe you were always here, right in front of me."
"And I’ll always be here for you, just as how I’ve always been." He says, pecking your lips with a smile plastered on his lips, a sudden fullness bursting in his heart, who was already overfilled with joy and adoration.
"I love you." You whispered, centimeters away from his face, breaths mixing together.
"Say it again." His whispers brushing over your lips, a part of his heart still not believing you, his longtime crush, and best friends, was in love with him too.
"I love you, Hyunjin."
"I love you too, so much I feel like crying." He admitted, making you both laugh in each other’s arms.
And there you stood for at least another five to ten minutes in his doorway, wrapped in each other’s embraces just taking in the way your friendship had evolved.
"So, about Changbin talking you into sense..." He starts, pulling you from your hand over to his couch.
"Don’t ruin the moment for god’s sake." His bubbly high pitched laugh resonating through the living room, putting a smile on your face almost immediately.
Yeah, you were whipped for Hyunjin.
