i assure you, i did not forget about them! however while mei became mizukage, there's very little on her outside of that, and we have no idea if she worked her way up through the ranks before taking over (given how chaotic kiri has been for the past. always. wouldn't surprise me if she didn't)

as for naori, she unfortunately didn't meet the criteria for consideration to begin with due to not being a canon manga character. however, even if she had been in the manga, she still wouldn't have made the list bc she was never actually given a rank

there are several female characters who might've made the list but didn't due to simply never having officially been given a rank - most people assume kushina was a jounin, but we actually have no clue about that. we know ame has genin and chuunin but the only confirmed jounin in any naruto canon at all is a filler character named aoi, meaning that not only did konan not qualify, but pain's female chikushoudou body doesn't qualify either (nor would. any of nagato's other bodies or nagato himself if they were girls. no jounin for amegakure)

my criteria was basically this:

-female character that exists in the canon naruto manga ONLY (no anime-only, light novel-only, movie-only, sequel-only, etc. characters allowed)

-character must have, at some point in the generally understood canon timeline, been explicitly established as a jounin (only no movies for this one, except for 'the last'; promotion is permitted to be sequel-exclusive if material in question is a continuation of the main timeline as it moves forward through the sequel; side material for the sequel series that is not officially tied in with the canon timeline is not applicable)

-character must not be a medical ninja, nor can the majority of their known skillset be healing jutsu (use of a single mednin technique is not an immediate disqualifier so long as casual non-mednin usage of that technique is not exclusive to the character nor exclusively used casually by female characters; potential exceptions to be examined on a case-by-case basis)

while mei meets the first and third requirement, she doesn't meet the second, which lands her solidly in the company of characters such as kushina, yuugao, gazeru, mito, konan, and so on.

I have Gathered some Data

@skysofrey and I recently got into a discussion about names in OFMD. Specifically, how many times does Ed actually call Stede by his name in the show? We could only think of a few examples each and that didn't seem right. And because I'm insane, I decided to rewatch and note down every time a name was used, who used it, and who was being spoken to. Here are my findings!

Before you proceed, please know that this is strictly for fun and because I was curious. There are likely errors in the data (I'm sure I missed some things, I'm just one person.) but! I still think that what's been gathered is very interesting.

Here are some other fun/important/miserable things that I found in my travels:

There is one more time where Stede calls Ed “Edward,” and the only time it isn’t said to him directly. This is when Stede is addressing the petrified orange.

Of the five times that Stede is called “The Gentleman Pirate,” two of them are from Ed.

Ed calls Stede by his name only twelve times in the series. Only two of these instances are spoken to someone else. There are two others when Ed is looking for him at the pier, and therefore spoken to no one.

There are only ten instances of other characters calling Ed something other than his name or “Blackbeard.” Two of these are from Izzy, during the scene in Spanish Jackie’s bar, where he’s informing Stede that Ed would like to meet with him. During this scene, he only uses “my captain” and “my boss.” This is one of the very few times he doesn’t refer to Ed to other people as “Blackbeard” and it’s at the time that is arguably the most important. (He’s an idiot.)

Out of the twenty times that Ed refers to himself, fourteen of those are as “Blackbeard/The Kraken.” He refers to himself with names other than “Ed/Edward” 70% of the time. 50% of the times he refers to himself by his name are during the beach scene in episode nine, and there is only one instance where he uses his name that is not in Stede’s company. ("Actually, I do want to be called 'Ed' from now on.")

Izzy only refers to Ed as "Edward" to other people four times in the show. Two of those times are when he's marooning Stede's crew, and each time he uses his name in that scene, he takes on a mocking tone. Meaning that 50% of every instance he's referred to Ed as "Edward" to other people, he's been mocking his name.

Ed calls Stede "mate" as often as he calls him by his name, but he only calls him "mate" directly.

Stede calls Ed by his name only once more than Izzy does.

80% of the times Ed refers to himself by name happen in episode nine.

dandelion is indeed the worst but if he’s not present in the next book i would legitimately be sorrowful as the whole thing will become a slog . you basically cannot have the “short stories” era-of-the-timeline iteration of geralt without dandelion, it would be like eating unbuttered bread.

though it’s not like season of storms did them dirty, i wasn’t disappointed with it (… with regards to them), but since it’s literally been over 20 years since the saga was finished i’m trying to prepare for any potential reality

ah thank u! 'crime and cricket' is the fandom tag for the Raffles series by E.W. Hornung, since the character name is difficult to use as a tag lmao It's mostly short stories with one novel, all narrated by Bunny who is the old school friend turned partner and accomplice of AJ Raffles, a gentleman thief who uses his fame as an amateur cricket player as a cover for his secret life as a burglar! They were sort of based on Holmes and Watson if they were criminals instead of detectives, but there's a lot more to them than that and they're really compelling stories that i have become completely obsessed with

if you wanna read any, Raffles Redux is my go-to as its full of annotations with extra context and illustrations etc, but the books are all public domain so they're easy enough to find online copies of. I would definitely reccomend reading these in order since theyre pretty serialised - but if you're not sure, the first 'The Ides Of March' and third 'Gentlemen Vs Players' are good intro stories for getting the feel of them

Chapter 45: Queen of Hurts

As the heroes make their way back through the woods, a powerful earthquake shakes the ground, bringing trees and branches crashing around them. Oz immediately recognizes the tremor, and the feeling it causes inside him, as the same thing that had happened in Sablier.

was broken, and the Headhunter is back.

Elliot tells Gilbert that the other siblings are all pretty pissed about it, but he's happy for his adopted brother. He asks Gil what it was like to form a Contract with Raven, and we get a fun little flashback within our flashback.

After entering the total darkness of the family's Abyss Gate, Gilbert is tangled in chains that bind his arms and legs. Raven strikes him, leaving a bloody wound on his neck, as it speaks to him. Raven reminds Gilbert that he's tried, and failed, to form a Contract with it already. But he was just a child then, and had wandered into the Gate mostly out of curiosity. This time, Gilbert grabs those chains that bind him, steels his gaze, and demands to form a Contract.

This time, Raven obliges, and says that, once again, it will be bound to Gilbert's left hand. A statement that surprises Gil.

And then...

Gilbert apologizes suddenly for not letting Elliot have a chance to make the Contract as a legitimate Nightray successor. Which of course, pisses Elliot off. He says he doesn't need Raven, he will support their family in his own way. That's why, he insists, Gilbert must do his part as Raven's Contractor-- and as his big brother.

Their conversation is interrupted by frantic banging on Gilbert's door.

As Leo tells him the Headhunter has struck again, the scene changes.

Vincent and Ada Vessalius are on a date, walking through a beautiful park as they also discuss the Headhunter. Ada says she's worried about Vincent and his brothers, and Vincent cups her face and pulls her close as he tells her not to worry. It's all very rosy, there's three pages of Ada trembling and blushing.

Ada asks if that's why Elliot hates Gil so much, and Vincent explains that it's a little more complicated than that. Gilbert was worried if he was the next target, those around him would get get killed again. But Elliot convinced himself that Gil left out of fear.

He calls Elliot stupid, and Ada looks up at him with a pitying look that makes him sick.

yeah, Vince is a pretty awful guy.

over at Pandora Headquarters, Oz has locked himself in his bedroom. Gilbert finds Alice moping outside his door, and drags her away to give him some space and rest.

It's been a week since they visited that mansion. And Oz has been too depressed to get out of bed.

Alice seems confused by the question, but finally says that it would have been pointless for Oz to kill Marie back then. Gil asks what she means, and Alice thinks a moment, and finally says she doesn't really know, but it pissed her off.

Gilbert pats her on the head and thanks her anyway.

Since I promised Mr. Feast I wouldn't watch ahead of him and he's slowly catching up, I've taken a pause in my gleeful binge of 一念关山 A Journey to Love to jot down a few of the disorganized thoughts I have about my best beloved favorite girl Yang Ying in the wonderful first eighteen episodes of this drama.

MILD SPOILERS BEYOND.

I cannot wait to see little pocket sized wolf cub Princess Yang Ying do her thing in the next half of the show. Honestly feel so blessed to have this character; there’s no one else like her in cdrama or American TV for that matter!

One of the themes I enjoy in stories about royal power struggles are narrative arcs for female characters who transition from naive to knowing, usually borne out of experiencing the inescapability of their femaleness in a treacherous sexist environment and consequently the limited array of tarnished tools at their disposal and the ways these tools are then deployed. I enjoy that type of story- Book Sansa Stark, my nostalgic fave! Zhen Huan! Minglan, even, in a way. As for historical examples, Empress Matilda! Isabella of France!

But I'm also absolutely relishing this twist on the familiar theme in A Journey to Love.

Because Yang Ying is a royal woman being explicitly trained to grasp the duties and wield the power of a prince, not the oblique power of a princess. The success of the mission, and the lives/fates of the Wu emperor, her subjects, and her now beloved friends in the delegation, depend on her ability to convincingly wear the mantle of princely responsibility, power, and prerogative and to physically and mentally embody this role. And for a child who is as malleable as she is in the beginning of the show, this incredibly formative AND transformative extended roleplay will inevitably become forever entrenched in her conception of self and her sense of possibility.

The kind of limited power she might have been able to achieve as an impoverished minor princess requires a very different skillset from the one she's acquiring. It would only be a contingent and conditional power, a la her sister-in-law the Empress of Wu or the Noble Consort Chu or Chuyue, the tomboy princess from the state of An, who perfectly demonstrates how a clever, capable, wealthy, beautiful royal woman with a powerful family is still a blunted sword.

What would be fascinating to explore, beyond her triumph as Prince Li of Wu (which, to reiterate, I'm SO EXCITED FOR), is the inevitable friction of what she would feel and do after mastering and embodying princely power but then must contend with the expectations and limitations of the identity she has long outgrown but will still be expected to perform once the mission is complete.

I don't think the drama will have time to cover this- after all, she is a supporting character and it would be a thematic tangent. But I suppose that's what fic is for! Maybe I will once again be inspired to write fic, depending on how they end Yang Ying's story...

Stories and characters that reveal emotional truth through pretense will always be my jam. In addition to the unexpectedly delightful Ren Ruyi/Ning Yuanzhou, I love this show so much for giving me Yang Ying.

The irony that the English title about an elite Academy (aka Hagwon) is grammatically incorrect. It should be either "The Midnight Romance In A Hagwon/The Midnight Romance In An Academy" or "The Midnight Hagwon Romance/The Midnight Academy Romance". Interestingly, the Korean title translates to "The Graduate" or "Graduation". Though I understand why you wouldn't use "The Graduate" since it refers to a pretty infamous movie with Dustin Hoffman.
