think it’s important to differentiate between “I don’t understand what this film/show/novel/poem/etc. was trying to say here, but I want to try to” and “I don’t understand what this film/show/novel/poem/etc. was trying to say here, and that means it’s bad, I’m done thinking about it now”.

#just thinking about a thing a mutual said about media literacy #and the number of times I've had really great conversations with people about things we both read/watched/saw #trying to pick apart some piece of it that one or both of us were having trouble wrapping our heads around #and the number of times i've been discouraged from or frightened away from admitting i don't understand and getting other people's takes #by an attitude of 'oh my god that was so obvious how stupid do you have to be not to be able to see that'#the issue I have is less about people not understanding something that's slightly beyond the surface level #and more about people not being CURIOUS about the things that they don't understand #and that goes above and beyond media literacy tbh
