caleb was very gracious with the way he treated essek when he found out about him being the traitor — and by all means he had all the right to just punch him in the face, having found this out in the worst time possible. but what i enjoy so much is how untrusting caleb is of him during the time after the peace treaty was signed:

he gave him a chance, the same chance to fix things or at least do something good with the power and time as he gave himself, but didn't ultimately trust. because caleb doesn't trust himself to be completely forgiven until he does enough all the while knowing there will never be enough. and yet, he doesn't let himself slack on things he can do to reach a semblance of peace. that being said, he knows essek is in the same place he once had been and he gives him space and opportunity, that he initialy didn't have up until he met m9, to prove not all is lost regarding him. while also reinforcing the trust must be earned.

and holy fuck, it's so good to see essek in visible shame when he meets the mighty nein in aeor and him not being able to look caleb in the eye out of all of them. there's a change, palpable progress that manifests inself in feeling something more than just self centered need. and caleb is someone whom he knows understands him and that is keeping him in check and tortures him simultaneously. which is good.

idk how to explain it really well, but what makes me obsessed with teenji and generally what sets apart lan wangji from the usual cold, stoic and inexpressive hot character is the reveal, early on, that he is just a little guy
