Unpopular Opinion: Cletus and Keenie weren’t that bad
Tumblr media
I’m not sure if this is even that much of an unpopular opinion, but but at least online every time I see fans discuss episode 4 they always go on about how selfish and terrible Cletus + Keenie were, about how they were “such self righteous jerks” who deserved what they got at the end or that "Collin was the only good Cherub!", stuff like that.
But is it just me, or whenever I saw that episode I never really saw it that way?
(Sorry for insanly long rambling below lol)
People always call Cletus and Keenie selfish jerks for not genuinely wanting to save/help the old man in the episode, but honestly… he was a rich asshole who experimented on the poor, hated orphans, and he went straight to hell anyways?
Obviously they wouldn’t want to save a guy like that, it’s just like Collin said, they were just doing the job assigned to them? I don’t know why people act like they went out of there way to do this, as the CHERUB commercial literally says it’s just like IMP where clients go to them for it, they get assigned missions, where they want to or not? (I'm not too sure, but I think Deerie might be overseeing them always too?) its almost like the reversal of Moxxie in ep 1

It's possible that whoever was their cilent for him didn't tell the full story to them or was biased since they wanted him to be saved after all.
And yeah they were putting on a cheery/holy face when they really didn't believe he was good (but if it's their job, kinda not too different from just pretending to not hate everyone at a sucky retail job just to get the job done lol), but really when you watch the ep all they were doing was just going to him showing him great things to enjoy in life, only snapped at the end when IMP kept ruining their missions each time trying to get him to kill himself (While also acting like jerks lol).
I’ve also seen people online seriously claim that the two “abused” Collin more than once (I even think the Tv Tropes page said something like that?). They really think this bc they overworked Collin/left him to the wolves in the ad, and Keenie slapped him at the end…
…Even though in the EXACT SAME EPISODE Loona literally did the exact same “Calm down pull yourself together slap joke” to Moxxie?? (Which is also in like a million TV shows)

But obviously nobody is saying they were “abusive” to Moxxie in this episode, bc this episode was obviously way more comedic than other episodes and they were just jokes? If anything it was probably done to make similarities with Moxxie, bc in-general both can be the butt-monkeys lol
The only reason I could understand would be when Keenie lost it at the end and ranted abt imps. But honestly WE the audience know that Viv’s version of hell has good hell creatures like Moxxie or Charlie, and some sinners there genuinely want to be reformed from there. But most in-universe wouldn’t know that, they would assume that hell there only has the absolute worst of humanity, so it kinda makes sense.
Plus I think in-universe Cherubs are supposed to be the Heaven equivent to imps, who are at the bottom of the social class, so they are just as at the bottom as imps are. So its really not that hard of a stretch to assume that technically, IMP + imps in-general feel the exact same way to Cherubs, or Heaven stuff, that they do.
We also barely know abt Heaven in this universe, maybe like some higher class angel ppl might spreading all that stuff abt imps to them? Idk whatever happens in Hazbin Hotel will give us more info abt all this lol
Don’t get me wrong, I never loved episode 4 tbh, and Cletus and Keenie were never really my favorites, but I always thought the people were kinda reaching about these two tbh. Am I the only one who thinks this?
