switching over to a tan canvas has honestly been life changing. i think half of my drawing avoidance was because i hated getting blinded every time i went to draw lmao

I wonder how far will it take us. all this clip culture of “speed reading, speed watching, skipping the boring part to the highlighted pieces shown in YouTube shorts.
Humans spent centuries forming their writing skills and the art of storytelling with the tiniest details, writers and artists spend years creating their works where all the dots are connected and every little thing is important for the viewer/reader to comprehend. book is a performance. cinema is a performance. a thing that you’re supposed to fix attention on to not skip anything, reflect on things that you’ve seen or read, and embrace the thought and the story that was told. and now it’s all useless because media become “a speedrun” and a brief retelling, and not only that.
The media itself reduces to this format, the shows and books become less creative, interesting, most of them now have the same drama and fanfiction cliches that are appealing to a viewer who tends to speedrun medias. the art itself became a fan service with prescribed plot, all warning and spoiler tags applied, all tropes noted on the cover. You don’t have to read the book to know if someone’s gonna die or fall in love. it’s all written in the head. You don’t have to watch the show to know the husband is the killer.
The fact that our century is full of media from all kinds of authors from around the world led humans to “speedrun” any type of art, and this, for its part, leads authors and studios to create less and less valuable, but marketable pieces of media. a bunch of loved cliches. recaps. YouTube shorts. quick dopamine. intellectual porn.
I stopped pondering this thought to breathe in some air, until I realized that maybe it’s not that bad. maybe somewhere in 19th century the bookshelves were full of pulp fiction, and the writers were worried about “the future of their art, turned into a quick entertainment”. Maybe in Middle Ages the marginalias led painters to think that their artworks and paintings which they spend years to create for, are becoming useless. Maybe this feeling is not new. if so, I hope we will get out of this dopamine trap as well and will continue to enjoy readibg books, watching shows and medias, comprehend and reflect on them the way we’re supposed to.
Do they know that reading is not mandatory? Nobody is forcing them to read?

RECREATE YOUR MASTERPIECE
Fernando Amorsolo was a nationally renowned Filipino painter known for having rural life as his subjects.
I find Amorsolo's works really inspiring. He believes in painting the world in a warm and happy light, which is a fresh perspective from my pessimism. His attention to details, mood, and lighting was also super awesome.
I was planning on using acrylic at first, but my range of colors were very limited, so I opted for watercolor, which I just realized have an ungodly amount of for some reason. I don't even paint that much.
I was thinking about doing something about the rural scene. Fortunately, I grew up in a rural area, which is currently in the process of urbanization. Luckily, I still have my childhood memories to hold on to.
I took a photo from my backyard as inspiration. Some people used to tend to the area there, but they stopped for some reason. Now, it's overgrown with wild greenery.
I then looked at some of his works for reference. The compositions look so warm and detailed. As expected from the national artist.
Next, I sketched out my ideas on my trusty sketchpad. At this point, it seems like only I could understand them.
I then made a final sketch on my 12x18in canvas. I used a 5h pencil.
When I went to the Mall of Asia recently, I learned about the art store next to National Bookstore. I was thrilled when I saw the masking fluid. I saw it once being used by a fancy watercolor art account online, but I could not find it in any stores until then. It was exciting finally getting to try it.
I then watched some watercolor tutorials on YouTube and tried my best in painting.
And then I finished, but realized I took to long as it was already past the deadline.
The painting is a family of three harvesting water spinaches (kangkong). The father is wiping away a sweaty brow, while the mother is holding a basket containing their produce. The son is working diligently at the back. Their clothes are a reference to the colors of the Philippine flag.
Of course, I could never amount to one of the greats. As of now, that is. I guess I failed at capturing the warm effect using color theory. I am pretty colorblind after all. This looks more cool than warm with all the blues and greens. The colors look a bit dull. I suppose I have my low quality watercolors to blame for that, or maybe it's just me. Despite all that, I'm still pretty proud of this work. I never knew I was capable of producing something like that traditionally.
Approximate time: Around twelve hours. Watercolor takes time to dry, but is very rewarding! I mean, look at those soft and blending effects. So pretty!

I saw your advice of dipping one's toe to another anon...I unfortunately didn't do that & now I'm confused is it good or bad? A lot of the information is scary...for someone whose thinking spirals I started fearing I would develop every mental illness mentioned.
The thing is I've never considered my daydreaming weird or freaky till the internet.
My mdding hasn't stopped my life yet. I have one of my dream jobs & degree. I literally used to daydream & create story boards for this job as a little girl.
At this stage I still know how to shutdown & study. & I have to be an active listener & take notes & read material beforehand. I even put dense documents in word document & play "read aloud" while also reading, it keeps me focused.
It's hard but I can. I've always known I have to work harder for decent or great marks & my ambition & Faith has mostly driven me to put in that extra work. But I always thought that all the hard work I do is due to my lack of concentration I've never focused on the idea that my daydreams were to developed or taking over my life or at least attempting to. My cousins & my mom used to make fun of the fact that at night before sleeping I would just stare in the distance (daydreaming) until I fell asleep or that I would just be smiling randomly at times.
I am working on being more social so i can get friends etc. I honestly think that my lack of social skills has more to do with my personality than my mdding. I like being alone. I hate trying to fill awkward silences & I'm extremely shy. My sister is my current best friend cause she loves me no matter what.
Cause people tend to bully me in real life. The last time I had friends I loved was at age 10 (I miss them so much) & I'm in my 20s now. I feel like women become meaner the older we get. Ive tried making friends at work but people were abusive in different ways. But I'm actively going to work on getting friends this year. I've decided to push myself to join group things (I just need to find things that are safe during covid times). I watched a video of one of my fav youtubers & she said she zooms with her friends at least once a week. So that is my aim to find friends to zoom with once a week with.
Basically my question is, is mdding bad or good?
How do you know it's good or bad? It's just weird to me that when I was younger people encouraged things like imaginary friends so many TV shows had kids with imaginary friends etc. But now my imagination is bad & means I'm ill. I'm genuinely confused.
I never had an imaginary friend as a kid & thought I was weird for that but I had stories which I would write down or tell my sister. As I grew older I kept them to myself I thought of writing them down but grew to lazy. I should've cause I think I had at least one gem. My mdding now has become stale and is about my ideal husband, my future goals career wise, my dream home & dinner parties. On occasion & quite recently though I've been daydreaming about being the new Tarantino. So I've decided to join a writer's club in my area they are waiting for covid to slow down before restarting for 2021. I dont know if that would fulfill my mdding of writing a stellar film & debuting in Cannes. But hey it's worth a try. 😀
But I'm excited to join the writing group.
I've taken up painting during quarantine cause I daydreamed about being a painter. I have a year to get good.
I tried surfing cause a movie I watched made me daydream about my dream guy being a surfer. I need a few more swimming lessons to take up that daydream 😂
Besides Tarantino, I've also daydreamed I was a musician so obviously I'm looking for affordable guitar lessons & vocal lessons. I live in a small town but I'll find something. 😀 whether or not that would fulfill my desire to record an album & daydreaming about a tour I dont know.
Also daydreaming makes exercise bearable. I could probably be more productive & study while exercising but I prefer daydreaming while exercising it helps me forget the pain.
I just hate when my mdding sneaks up on me at work. But I then have to use my meditation tools focusing on being present. Headspace has a great series on Netflix. I can daydream all day if I have no work, school, church or not around others. Otherwise if I am doing any of that I need to be present & that's my goal for 2021.
This is weird. Definitely pathetic. Probably a sign of an unfulfilled life? But is it bad?

Also another weird thing I do is I imagine my fav podcasts as dinner parties where I can give input cause I'm extremely opinionated. I like the different personalities on the podcast & wish they were my friends.
“Basically my question is, is mdding bad or good?”
MD is inherently negative in some way. The daydreaming itself isn’t the bad thing, but our relationship with it. I tend to explain it as akin to a food addiction. Food is good and it is needed for us to live as functional human beings, like daydreaming it is a normal part of life which cannot just be ‘quit’. But our relationship with food can become disordered and lead us to unhealthy behaviour and negative outcomes. Knowing if your relationship has tipped into the realm of unhealthy is the tricky part, and is negotiable to an extent, like how we can indulge in junk food regularly and still consider ourselves healthy and happy with our habits.
This line is different for everyone and there’s no real this-is-exactly-when-it-becomes-bad answer. The best we can do is make an honest evaluation of our lives, speak about it to a therapist if possible, and make our best determination.
Here are some papers you can read to give you a better understanding of MD. And here are some measures which might give you an idea about where you stand. (note: these are measures meant for clinical use and were not intended for self diagnosis, they are provided to give you an understanding of what MD might look like)

Survey #288
“i never believed the devil was real, but god couldn’t make someone filthy as you”
When was the last time you drove or travelled for over an hour? Where did you go? Around a month back, I rode with Mom and my sister to my mom’s doc appointment. When you get old, are you going to let your hair go gray or dye it instead? Haha, I don’t see my desire to dye my hair wild colors ever fading. What genre was the last book you read? Was it any good? Fantasy. It was very good. Did you ever wear braces on your teeth? Yes. What’s your favorite condiment to have with sausages or hot dogs (or the vegetarian equivalent)? I just have ketchup and mustard. Which fictional character can you relate to the most? Is this a character from film, TV or a book? I dunno, there’s just so many to dig through. I’ve never felt a *strong* connection to any. Do you groom your eyebrows? If so, how? Not really anymore. Do you own any photo albums? Are they dedicated to special occasions or just a random selection of photos? We have old ones stored in a cabinet somewhere. I haven’t looked at them in a long time, but I think they’re loosely bound by time periods. What’s your favorite meal of the day - breakfast, lunch, or dinner? Breakfast, for sure. Who was the last person you texted? How do you know that person? Sara. She’s my best friend. What was the reason behind the last time you shouted or raised your voice? It wasn’t severe at all, but I raised my voice to tell Roman to stop clawing at the carpet. Are you a citizen of more than one country? Would you ever use that advantage to move abroad? No. Have you ever read any of John Green’s books? If so, which one is your favorite? I barely started The Fault in Our Stars, and that’s it. I’m quite sure I would if I actually read them, though. Are you a protective person? UM ONLY JUST SLIGHTLY. Have you ever experienced an earthquake? No. There’s been very, very mild ones here, and the one “big” one (which, mind you, was only big enough to make the pool water barely tremble) that’s happened in my lifetime I wasn’t even home for; I was hours away at the zoo. According to Facebook outrage much more recently, my area experienced a teeny-tiny one, but I sure didn’t feel it. Are you a fan of penguins? Omg yes, such darlings. So intelligent, too. I particularly love emperor penguins. Has anyone ever sang to you? Yes. Are you a good painter? I’ve been told so. Before buying a car, do you usually test drive it? I’ve never been in this position. When was the last time you met someone for the first time? Ummm I dunno. Maybe Nicole’s ex? Have you ever cooked with crab or lobster? Could you ever bring yourself to kill a live lobster/crab? No and no. I hate the taste of both. Squishy and just… ew. Which fast food restaurant do you go to the most? What do you tend to order when you go there? Being the cheapest, probably McDonald’s? I usually get a double cheeseburger and small or medium fry. Does it bother you when dogs jump up at you? Does it bother you less if it’s a smaller dog? Nah. I mean their claws can hurt, but it’s all worth a dog’s love, haha. What kind of animal did you touch last? Was this animal one of your pets? I pet my cat Roman last. How would you describe your sense of humor? Have you ever offended someone when you were only joking? Seeing as I don’t even find myself funny, idk how to answer that. I don’t believe I’ve ever offended anyone with a joke. When was the last time you cried - what caused it? It was literally last night when I was really deeply thinking about stuff I’ve been running from. What’s your favorite flavor of potato chip? You can’t beat the original ruffled kind, imo. Do you prefer fruit or vegetable juice? What kind of flavors do you like? I love fruit juice, but you’ll never see me even try vegetable juice. I enjoy lots of fruit ones: mango (my favorite), pineapple, strawberry, watermelon, orange, apple… Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone? How did you meet this person? If you mean via a call and not texting, that would be my psychiatrist. I met him during my partial hospitalization. He helped save my life. Who was your first celebrity crush? Which celebrity do you like now? Jesse McCartney /swoons. Now I’m a l l about Mark Fischbach like jesus fucking Christ lord- Do you usually sleep with your closet door open or closed? It’s closed. What’s your favorite love movie? The Notebook. Afraid of heights? Kinda, yeah. Do you take a vitamin daily? Not daily, no, but I have to take Vitamin D once a week. Wal-Mart, Target, or K-Mart? Wal-Mart. Is K-Mart even still around? Cheetos Or Fritos? Cheetos; I don’t really like the latter. Are you patient? N O P E, not unless it’s really called for. Which are better black or green olives? I hate olives. Black aren’t as awful, though. Who was your high school crush? Ha, Jason surpassed “crush” by a lighyear. Have you ever had your computer or e-mail hacked? Did anything bad happen as a result? No to both, but I’ve had my Facebook hacked. Nothing too bad happened. Do you prefer the company of people or animals? Animals, for sure. I need human company sometimes too, though. When was the last time you went to the beach? What did you do there? A few years ago when Colleen and I were still friends. The water felt fucking incredible, so I swam a lot, and then I just chilled with her, her husband, and their then-infant son under the umbrella. I still got insane sun poisoning, though. What kind of milk do you prefer to drink (if you drink it at all)? 1-2%. Skim is gross and whole is too thick. When was the last time you wore some kind of fancy dress? That witchy photoshoot I mentioned in I think the last survey. Do you enjoy dressing up (ie. in suits or smart clothing)? When was the last time you did so? Ugh, no. Too much effort and usually not very comfortable. See above answer for the second part. What’s worse - being overdressed or underdressed? I think the latter would embarrass me more. What do you think would be the worst thing about being stuck in solitary confinement? Being alone with only your head for “sound.” And if you’re in solitary, odds are your head isn’t in a good place, so it just makes it worse. How old were you when you learned to tie your shoelaces? Idk, but I know I learned it the “wrong” way first from Dad. It always annoyed Mom because they weren’t tight enough, apparently. Do you enjoy decorating for the holidays? For the most part, honestly not really. I love SEEING places decorated, but hate doing it myself. So much effort for sometimes not even a month’s worth of enjoyment. Would you rather go into a restaurant or just go via the drive-thru? I prefer the drive-thru. Do you like having your teeth cleaned at the dentist? Yeah, even if there may be a bit of pain here and there. It feels nice afterwards. Have you ever had a gun drawn on you before? YIKES, NO. When was the last time you went to a petting zoo? I probably haven’t since I was a baby. How old were you when you first started using Tumblr? Have you had the same blog all that time? Idr, but I know I was waaaay late to the party. I’ve had the same since the start, though. Are you a fan of Reddit? What are some of your favorite subreddits? I’ve never used it. Have you ever watched those YouTube videos of people popping their own spots or zits? Do you find them gross or fascinating? EW EW EW EW NO. They gross me the FUCK out. What’s a food you hated as a kid but love now? How about vice versa? Hmmm… I only know vice-versa, really. I loved peas as a baby, but now it’s a “fuck no” from me, man. Do you prefer socks, shoes or going bare foot? Bare feet, at least where it makes sense. Are you currently in the second story of a building? No; my house doesn't have a second floor. Who was the last music artist you listened to a song by? Ozzy. Have you ever written or drew something on a dollar bill? No. What was your favorite childhood game to play with your friends? We played lots of things, but I guess "Categories" in the pool probably wins. Basically the person on one end of the pool had to guess somebody on the other side's favorite in a certain topic, and if they guessed it right, you raced the other person to the opposite side. Whoever got there fastest was the next guesser. Where did you get your favorite pet from? My favorite pet of all time, my old dog Teddy, we got as a puppy from a friend of a friend. Her cocker spaniel had a massive litter and adopted the babies out. Have you ever called animal control on anyone? Not me personally, no. I think my mom did when our childhood neighbor's two rottweilers got loose and killed at least one of our kittens of the time; she was livid because it wasn't the first time they got out and attacked our cats, and of course us kids were absolutely devastated. I think they got off with a warning. Do you prefer wearing hoodies to coats? Yeah, especially slightly oversized. Is there anything written on the shirt you are wearing? No, it's just a black tank top. Have you ever been to another continent? No. Do you ever go out of your way to avoid someone? Not really. What was your last voicemail about? I don't even have a voicemail set up, so. Are you currently wearing a belt?I haven't worn belts since high school. How much was gas the last time you looked? I think $1.99. Is there someone who would support you no matter what? My mom, probably. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?I REALLY don't want to think about this one. Do you still get carded when you try and buy things you’re old enough to? I very rarely order one, but I don't really get carded for drinks at restaurants anymore. Do you know anyone fluent in a really uncommon language? Not that I know of. Do you kiss on the first date? This would depend on a lot of things. Odds are though, no. When was the last time you slept on something other than a bed? I've got no clue. How do you feel about the last person you shared a kiss with? I love her. Describe your current mood: Hopeless. Confused. Aimless. Exasperated. Just depressed. Do you think we were put on this earth for a reason? I mean, somewhat, but also not really. I don't believe life exists by chance, so whoever/whatever made that decision obviously had some reason - but not for each person in particular, I believe. I highly doubt something/someone thought out extravagant stories for every single thing that lives. I believe we give ourselves a reason. What is something you have done this year you’re proud of? Absolutely nothing, off the top of my head. What were you doing 10 years ago? I woulda been 14, almost 15... so starting high school. I was in school with actual goals and confidence I'd do great in life, despite my depression being in full swing. Did you ever have a MySpace? Yup... Still remember Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful of Sunshine" was the song on my meerkat-slathered page too, haha. Do you think breaks are toxic in a relationship? I don't believe in breaks, period. You don't turn love on and off. Do you have a YouTube channel? If no, would you create one? If yes, what’s your content? Yeah, but it's not one that seriously produces content. Its primary purpose is just to like, favorite, and rarely comment on stuff while having recommendations catered to my interests. I used to make GMV/AMV-type things and mostly Meerkat Manor tributes, as well as various MEP parts because BOY could I only accomplish very short videos. I no longer have "professional" video editing software (I'd always pirated it before, anyway...) nor the necessary motivation and patience to make them anymore. Are you a math person? Heeeeeeeell no. Have you been ghosted before? Would you ghost someone? No to both. When do you think things will be normal again? Who the fuck knows. It'll probably be a couple years, at least. Do you watch anime? If I'm watching television, yeah, I like some animes. Do you like TikTok? Never used it. Do you ever miss Vine? YO Vine was fuckin FUNNY If you're in school, are you doing it on Zoom or in class? I'm not in school, so. But if I was and in-person classes were expected, guess who the fuck isn't going with how serious I am about social distancing. Lives come before education. Would you ever have a pet rat? I've had a handful, but I don't think I will again. Their cages require so much cleaning, and they need more socialization than I'm able to provide. I fucking adore them, though. Favorite memory with your best friend? It's weird, we've "seen" each other for only like, a month's collective time, and I'm not sure of my answer because there's so many. Have you ever dated someone more than twice your age? No. Have you ever “dined and dashed”? No, I never could. Have you ever been cut off by a bartender because you were too drunk? No. Have you ever borrowed money from your mom & lied about why you needed it? I don't think so. Have you ever dated someone just because they had money? Fuck no. Have you ever lied to your spouse about the money you spent shopping? N/A, but I wouldn't. Have you ever flirted with a cop to get out of a ticket? No. Have you ever lied during a job interview? Me? Social? People person? Well duh, of course I am. Have you ever switched tags on an item to pay less for it? No, that's awful. Have you taken any pics of yourself that you wouldn't want your parents to see? Actually no. Did you ever get fired and tell someone you were laid off? No. Have you ever turned in a school paper that someone else wrote for you? Absolutely not. I liked writing papers anyway and am very serious about creative honesty. Do you feel accepted by your BF/GF’s family? N/A If you were an employer, would you hire someone with your exact work ethic? Well, what's the job? Have you ever trashed your ex’s car after an argument? No. The only thing I ever did to his car was decorate it for his birthday lmao. Have you ever done something because of peer pressure you are ashamed of? I don't think so, no. Have you ever been embarrassed to introduce your parents to anyone? No. Would you leave a note on a car claiming responsibility if you damaged it? Yes. The guilt otherwise would be unbearable. Have you ever used someone's handicapped parking pass to get a parking spot? Ew, no. Have you ever held back a well-deserved compliment because you were jealous? I wouldn't put me past it lately. For yourself, would you rather have a perfect body or high IQ? I hate my body so fuckin much that I'll take the first, please. Have you ever used a false ID? Nope. Are you embarrassed to tell people your job? I'm embarrassed to admit I don't HAVE a job. If you ran over an animal would you keep driving? Oh my god no, I'd have to stop to break the fuck down. Ever lie about you (or your kids') age to get a discount? Ha, I'm sure my parents would sometimes at restaurants when I was young. Do you really care about saving the planet for future generations? A LOT. Have you gotten close to anyone recently? Not really. Do you remember the first conversation you had with the person you have feelings for? No, but I can assure you it probably wasn't nice lmao. Have you ever gotten a D or F on your report card? Not until college. If you had twins, would you give them rhyming names? No. What are you listening to? "Radio" by Rammstein is on atm. Have you ever fallen into a mud puddle? Maybe as a kid. But that might'a been on purpose, lol. Are you scared of spiders? To a degree. Like, I want a few tarantulas but will scream and jump five feet the moment I see a huge spider beside me unexpectantly. I think they are very, very fascinating and important, but I also prefer to give them distance. Unless I have a camera in hand, haha. Do you think that crying is a form of weakness? Absolutely not. Have you ever slept on a couch with someone? Yeah. Last person to call you? Some number from Mississippi??????????? Ever feel like you have been replaced? Oh yes.

Soft Tag Game.
Nobody indicated me. So i’m doing it aniway.
RULES:
*Write 11 facts about you
*Answer the questions of who indicated the TAG to you
*Indicate 05 or more Tumblr friends (blogs) to answer the TAG
*Make 11 questions to who you indicate.
PART 01 - THE 11 FACTS ABOUT ME:
01. My favorite activity is sleeping.
02. Sometimes i like to look at my horoscope to see what gets right and what gets wrong about my personality. I’m a Taurus.

11. My first geek passion as a kid were dinosaurs and greek mithology.
PART 02 - ANSWERING 21 QUESTIONS
01. The book that transformed your life?
I think it was probably Voltaire’s Candide. This book is a tragicomic story about a ragtag bunch of misfits who were raised as rich priviliged people that believed that everything was alright in the world, and have their visions shaked when they lose everything, so they must get united and adapt to their new reality to get into a happy ending. The message i take of that story is: “Yes, the world is shitty. Out there are lots of people who will exploit and hurt you. So learn to count with your friends, be kind to one another, and keep living and moving on”.
02. The movie that changed your way of seeing the world?
Walt Disney’s Fantasia. This experiment to give visuals to classical music trough classical music formed my believe that we must keep blurring the lines between popular and erudite arts, and all art should be acessible to al people.
03. The music that makes part of the soundtrack of your life?
I tend to say that Mägo de Oz’s ‘Danza del Fuego’ is the song that would be the opening of a series about my life.
04. Define longing?
A word that sound better as the portuguese ‘saudade’.
05. If you got back in time, wich scene would you visit of your life?
I would go back to 2008, and say to my 10 year old self how to give some improvements to its writing.
06. The place where your heart is.
The beaches.
07. The travel of your life.
To the brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
08. An author that you have metted recently, and whose works you want to continue to read.
Probably Umberto Eco. I reded two books of him, and i got curious to know more of his work.
09. Coffee or tea?
Tea. Specially of mint.
10. Who's your Doctor (if you don't watch Doctor Who, who's your favorite character from a TV series)?
Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), from seasons Seven to Eight, and Eight Doctor (Paul Mcgann), from the 1996 TV Movie.
11. If you could just throw everything away and live your dream, what would you do?
No idea, really.
12. If you could choose to be a character from a book, TV series or movie, who you would be?
Probably the Doctor. He is a self regenariting (shape shifter) imortal alien who can travel to anywhere in time and space. How not to choose to be it?
13. What makes you don't like a story?
If everything is grimm dark and the characters are boring, i don’t have any will to continue reading or watching it.
14. Do you like romance in stories? Why?
If i feel that the couple is health together and have good chemistry, even if is not the focus of the main plot, i find that it can be a nice way to humanize characters, showing how its lifes are outside of the intense action.
15. Wich book did you hated having read?
Sons of Lilith: The Awakening by Elaine Velasco has a character who is a vampire that doesn’t want to give away killing humans to drink their blood, but them says he is in favour of life while massacring the people in a clandestine abortion clinic (which, i have to remember, can save several teenage girls victims of sexual abuse from dying of a risk pregnancy). I tought ‘What’? and ended up really hating this book because of that character.
16. Wich movie did you hated having watched?
A brazilian movie Wolf at the Door. All the characters were assholes, and i left the movie felling really miserable.
17. Do you like anime/manga? Any favorite?
I love it. My favorite mangas are probably Legend of Kamui (Sanpei Shirato), Árion (Yoshikazu Yasuhiko) and Evil Crusher Maya (Masami Kurumada). My favorite animes are Saint Seiya, Tenkuu Senki Shurato, The Rose of Versailles and Ashita no Joe.
18. Who is the best villain you saw in a story?
Probably Claude Frollo, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Before the recent fever of catholic priests involved on sex abuse scandals apearing on the TV news, Victor Hugo was already denouncing it with that creep.
19. If you could do an interview with any person, alive or dead, from our world, who would you choose and why?
Mary Shelley (british writer), Frida Kahlo (mexican painter) and Violeta Parra (chilean folclorist and musician). I consider them to be very complex people and fascinating artistic role models.
20. If you could meet and and befriend a writer, who would be?
My lady, Mary Shelley.
21. Cats or dogs?
Cats. They kill rats for you and are more independent.
22. If you could choose any time period or society to live, wich it would be?
A utopic future with vaccins for every desease ever.

Swallow Your Dreams
All languages, but English especially, like to pilfer foreign words for concepts we wish we’d thought of first. Burrito. Kindergarten. Cul-de-sac. (Direct translation: “ass of the bag” in French. Which I think we can all agree is spot on.)*
But the reverse is also true: we sometimes dislike an idea so much that we can’t stop naming it. Utopia. Shangri-La. Eden. Zion. Arcadia. Erehwon. Cockaigne. Camelot. Xanadu. Beulah Land. Lotusland. Neverland. The Good Old Days. We may think we’re into it, but trust me—the more names something has, the more we despise it.
In the case of utopian fantasies, I think we love-hate them so much because we know ecstasy must come with suffering. Not in a ‘moral justice of the universe’ kind of way, but in a ‘how can you know what wet is if you’ve never been dry’ kind of way. Sometimes the suffering itself gives us hope—sincere pipe dreams tend to crop up when the news is at its worst. Conversely, a lack of suffering makes us nervous, giving way to satirical illustrations of paradise that either chastise our disappointment with mediocrity, or exhort us to fly a little closer to the ground. The only time we drop the subject is when, God forbid, we surpass one standard deviation on the joy curve, at which point our fear of jinxing it forces us into a superstitious, but no less aware, silence. Spectacle is the lens through which we first recognize boredom, and other punning metaphors for what is ultimately a pretty basic philosophical idea.
Anyway. By general agreement, we now find ourselves in one of those Bad News Eras, and the little Dutch boy has long since run out of fingers to hold back the flood. Idealism is rampant, regardless of how angrily it may present itself (and usually in opposition to other forms of idealism.) Meanwhile, the incorrigibly cynical among us can only sigh as we wait for the waters to recede. All of which is to say, I read an article recently. And it annoyed me.
We’ve all heard some version of the old saw that "the world needs garbage collectors;" i.e., polite society has needs that presumably no one would cater to in the cloud-cuckoo land where everyone Follows Their Dreams. Personally, I tend to side with Drew Carey and Mike Rowe on the matter. This annoying article, in contrast, promoted the central thesis that technology would render the “dirty jobs” problem obsolete, thanks to ever-increasing automation. It predicted that in the near future we would achieve, if not Utopia, then at least the particular sliver of it that oversees labor markets.
And honestly, the author could be right. Maybe we'll all have a housecleaning sex robot, and the self-driving firetrucks will aim their own hoses, and the farm machinery will pick the fruit and monitor the soil conditions far better than humans ever could. Maybe we'll all get to be painters, and singers, and writers, and comedians, and movie stars, and the indoor plumbing will sort itself out. There are, we must admit, significantly more jobs in the creative sector now than there were 50 years ago—we're at Peak TV, y'all!—and that pattern can surely only continue.
Aside from the obvious practical considerations, however, this wonderland has a particular Achilles heel that I want to address: everyone will be miserable. (Which, if you’re keeping track from earlier, makes this post one of those Dystopia We Never Saw Coming, Be Careful What You Wish For, Icarus Get Your Ass Back Here kind of stories.)
The thing is, humans like to work. Or more accurately, humans require validation, and hard work provides it with very little outside help. Chop the firewood and feel its warmth through the winter; tend the seedling and taste its delicious fruit. But can you write a song that no one ever hears, and still feel good about it? A few can, and they generally end up draped with popularity they never needed, because output unbridled by fear is the best kind. But most professionally creative people will admit they are inborn approval junkies who have only found success in the business by forcefully taming their instincts—reminding themselves on a daily basis that haters gonna hate, as they say.
The misconception is seductive, though, especially when the known goblin of “fame” is replaced by less vain euphemisms: successful artists are “beloved,” and “respected,” and have “earned their creative freedom” (don’t get me started)… and bystanders tend to assume that all that apparent validation must be pumping through their veins at great speed. To work in a creative field is to install a zen-secreting organ just behind the pancreas, while the rest of humanity is left staring wistfully into the night screens, watching the elite get high off their stash and telling themselves that if only they had the time, or the money, or the housecleaning sex robot, they too could spend all day being creative, and feel just as good as their successful counterparts appear to. Give one of those folks a toe in the door and a deadline, and it won’t be long before they project their individual craving onto us all—say, for example, in an article from a well-known tech platform, which imagines just how great it will be when we can all follow our surprisingly-similar dreams in a tight spiral around one another, gaily refusing to look down at the sink drain below.
But in fact, a microcosm of that supposed nirvana already exists, here and now: it’s called YouTube. Millions upon millions of users with eight views, zero validation, and a numerically-proven feeling of worthlessness. They were creative, and no one cared, which was all they actually wanted in the first place. They tried to make a deal with the devil but even he didn’t bother to show up. And when the milk and honey dispensers become fully mechanized, the pain of that realization will only come harder and faster: creativity doesn’t provide validation. Creativity flows naturally after validation has been secured elsewhere.
When I wake up already knowing that I’m worthwhile, I am able to be creative. When I have the love of a family—biological or chosen—I am able to be creative. When I consider secret personal accomplishments to be as meaningful as public ones, I am able to be creative. Unpleasant tasks and hard work don’t stand in the way of my dreams; they fill a hole that my dreams were never going to fit into properly anyway. To envy a creative person’s life is to look at a garden and assume it’s flowers all the way down, rather than a deep slurry of mud, worms, and fertilizer that allows beauty to spread freely over its surface.
The only real way to follow your dreams is to forge ahead on your own and trust that they’ll keep up. If you can already write the book assuming that no one will read it, congratulations—this message is not for you, and you probably stopped reading a long time ago anyway because you’re not looking for answers. But if you dream of a creative life free from worry, pain, sadness, frustration, and all the rest of the working world’s supposed drudgery, then you’re better off not knowing what you’re missing. And if you’re writing utopic articles suggesting that universal creative employment is a desirable—let alone inevitable—reality, then you’re especially foolish, because you’re promoting a cult of chugging when you’ve already sipped and found it lacking in flavor.
*Side note: Let’s all say a sad farewell to the phrase “literal translation,” whose first half has by now been thoroughly co-opted by the totally-seriously-for-real crowd. Like oh my God you guys, it literally translates that way. Totes McGoats.

How can I make my characters come alive?
People are complex things. Will it ever be possible to simulate a real person? As in: Create a reasonably simple model, that does reasonably well in simulating that person’s behaviour in different situations?
As someone who loves to figure out how people work, I believe the answer is A) probably yes, and B) the tools we have developed for describing people’s personality so far, like the “big 5″, or the “16 personality types”, are miles away from this. (Basically at level of Aristotelian physics; as in: All but useless.)
Being able to effectively simulate people would open up whole new horizons, for all sorts of disciplines, like history (imagine you could simulate historical events to the degree of success we can simulate astronomical events today. And, yes, definitely also storytelling.
Luckily, we don’t need to simulate a real person in order to write a perfectly good story; just like we don’t need to be able to do ray tracing in our head, in order to paint a satisfying picture of characters interacting. Imagine a computer rendering a single scene of some complexity by going through millions and millions of operations ---- and then compare this to the way an aquarellist or one of the speed painters on youtube creates a scene within a few minutes, that totally comes alive for us, totally makes us see what he wanted us to see. And not only that, often does so in a way, that seems to add an extra magical something to the scene, that makes it much more enticing than a rendering could be. Yes there are some aesthetically "magical” photorealistic rendering, just like there are magical photos ---- but drawing and painting offer totally new realms, that allow us to create kind of “super optimal stimuli”, like the special kick your feel when you watch an image by your favourite children’s book illustrator.
---->
The task of making a character come alive is easier than it might seem, because A) a few strokes can totally make things happen in our brains, a bit like the texture of a water colour can simulare real life texture, and B) the people we paint aren’t real people, but highly abstracted people, who are reduced to a very small number of defining, and often exaggerated or distorted, features.
(Anyone who creates stories, or paintings, or animations, automatically does “brain research”, by experimenting the way our minds work. More on this maybe in some future essay.)
As a result, it seems to me that the best way to approach the answer the question “How do do I make my characters come alive”, is to look at writers who manage to do exactly this, with a minimum number of strokes, so to speak.
The percentage of people who can pull this off is quite small, but because there are so many stories around, there are still many impressive examples for this. Of the ones who have the greatest chance to be shared knowledge, the ones that come to my mind are “The Wire”, “Breaking Bad”, “The Simpsons”.
Let me simply start with Bender from Futurama.
Bender is not exactly a super complex character. Nor is he a super realistic character. And yet he is a character that feels super alive for me, and even a character I am unlikely to forget for a long time to come.
How do the writer achieve this?
One indicator for me is, to look at the following questions:
Is Bender intelligent? Does he have what it takes to be successful?
Is he irreverent?
Is he a good friend?
Is he cool?
If I think about how I would answer these, I think I would answer all of them with “well, yes and no”.
On one level, he is obviously super irreverent. But at the same time, he is also super impressed by the famous and the rich, as illustrated by this episode where he sucks up to the Elsa the cook, and many others.
Is he a good friend? Well, most of the time he totally isn’t, partly because of his overwhelming self centeredness and his way of acting super irresponsibly. But at the same time, to some extent, with respect to Fry, he does sometimes act like something like a friend after all.
Is he intelligent? Does he have what it takes to be successful? Well, again, yes and no. He can be surprisingly successful, again, because of his brazenness and self centeredness and of his megalomania. But at the next moment, it’s all gonna come crashing down, because of some total misjudgement of the situation or of people. And also because he simply doesn’t care. Deep down, he doesn’t really want to be successful, he is far to pleasure orientated and impulsive for that. His motives are completely childish.
Is Bender cool? Well, at times it would be hard to deny that he can act super cool. But then, just around the corner, he can say something like “we could use somebody like you in the Robot mafia”, or super suck up to somebody successful. Or juggle with his head, to lure the attention of his friends away from them admiring Nibbler.
To be fair, with any multiple episode series, with multiple writers, you tend to get this “well yes and no” effect for free, on the cheap, simply through the fact that different writers will write the same character differently, plus different storylines will kind of demand different aspects.
Now Bender is something of a caricature of a character, which obviously makes the task of creating something that sticks out and is hard to forget somewhat easier. To make the task a bit more demanding, let's look at a more complex character.

What are the Benefits of Living in a CT Waterfront Home?
Living on a waterfront property has a lot of benefits. Most people love the water, enjoy the views and want to own a home with direct waterfront, or close by. Maybe you're wondering about the benefits of waterfront living in Connecticut or New York and if it is for you.
Living in a waterfront home has the following benefits:
1. Improved health
Fresh air.
Strengthen your immune system.
Better sleep and relaxation.
2. Amazing views
Recreational potential
Privacy and serenity
Source of inspiration
3. Great financial investment
Rental investment option
Excellent resale value
Strong potential for appreciation
This article will share in detail the benefits of waterfront living.
1. Improved health
Improved health is probably the best benefit of waterfront living. The natural beauty of the outdoors is usually better for the body than staying indoors for a long time. Lakes, oceans, and rivers can all offer these health benefits. It’s no surprise people are flooding coastline towns like Greenwich CT to own waterfront houses. Below are some of the few ways how these bodies of water improve the home owner's health:
Fresh air. The closer you are to water, the more air quality tends to improve. The very nature of the waterfront environment already has a positive effect on you. The breeze coming from these water bodies helps your body absorb oxygen. They also relieve you of anxiety and regulate your mood.
Fresh air proves beneficial not only to your physical but also for your mental health. When we say, we want to "unwind," we usually seek nature's beauty to ease our minds off of things that stress us. By living in a waterfront home, you bring these benefits right at your doorstep.
Better sleep and relaxation. A relaxed mind and body brought on by the fresh air you breathe, results in better sleep at night. I don't think anyone would disagree that water's sound is helpful for a good night's rest. In many ways, seeing or living near water helps clear the mind of unpleasant thoughts. You rarely hear waterfront homeowners complain about noise or unwelcomed urban disturbances. If there are such things, they have the sound of the waves tend to drown out those noises.
Strengthen your immune system. Since you are now free of stress, your immune system will follow suit. Stress is one of the most significant health issues of the working population. And reducing your daily dose of it is a direct path to a healthier lifestyle.
Living in waterfront homes also promotes exercise and interest in a healthy diet. Communities in lake or oceanfront settings are home to local food markets. A lot of the ingredients you can buy are grown and picked right in the area. These markets encourage cooking healthier dishes at home. They also have many dining spots that offer far healthier food options than those in the metro.
And who doesn't love jogging with fresh air soothing your lungs? The natural beauty around you will undoubtedly make you want to get up in the morning and do your daily runs.
2. Amazing views
Whether you're living in a simple family home overlooking the ocean or staring at a calm and peaceful lake, chances are your property comes with a view. These beautiful views are some of the reasons why more people want to live near the water. Who wants to stare at an old building across the street when you can be amazed by beautiful sunsets every day? There are other benefits that waterfront homeowners experience just by living right next to these amazing views. Here are some of them:
Recreational potential. Many people think that the quietness waterfront homes offer equates to boredom. This is not true. The homes on Candlewood Lake, Connecticut are just some of the waterfront homes that prove otherwise. Purchasing a waterfront home gives you both serenity and adventure. A house on the beach will allow you to do yoga on the shores, play beach volleyball, swim or go boating. Waterfront property on rivers offers opportunities for sailing and for kayaking too. There is an endless list of recreational activities you can do. Whether you like peaceful activities or you are into extreme water sports, you will find at least one recreational activity that you enjoy.
Privacy and serenity. If you are looking for privacy, a waterfront home is a right choice for you. Many times, waterfront properties are in areas that are less dense and populated then cities. One good example is waterfront houses in Connecticut. Most, if not all, of the States' waterfront houses, allow a distance between properties or privacy provided by hedges or fences. You get to spend more private time with your loved ones without thinking about your neighbors. Plus, you”ll admire the beauty of the beach and take a stroll anytime with your beloved.
Source of inspiration. People on the creative side are usually looking for the natural and serene setting that waterfront houses offer. It's not unusual for waterfront house renters to be artistically inclined. From painters to photographers, waterfronts provide an excellent source of creative inspiration. Many recognized artworks were created while the artist is basking in the beauty of nature.
3. Great financial investment
Many people buy homes not only because they want to live there but because of its monetary benefits. In investing, some properties just make good sense. Waterfront houses are one of those. Here are 3 top reasons why a waterfront property is a smart financial investment:
Rental investment option. If you are purchasing a waterfront house as a second home, you can take advantage of its rental potential. Some waterfront homeowners on lakes in Connecticut do this for at least part of the year. Waterfront home rentals are in demand because they are more private than hotels and inns. You can take advantage of this, especially if your waterfront home is less than a mile away from a tourist spot or restaurant.
Excellent resale value. Living in waterfront houses not only provides benefits for the homeowner's well-being. It's a business opportunity too. The resale amount of waterfront homes prove to remain high over the years. This is regardless of environment or economic changes. As a result, they tend to keep their value even when other homes in the area significantly decline in value. After enjoying your waterfront home's benefits for years, you can profit out of it. Because of its excellent resale value, owners of waterfront properties find it easy to resell their waterfront homes.
Strong potential for appreciation. You may think that reselling your house may be lower than the amount you bought it. This is not the case for waterfront homes. The value of waterfront houses is always in an upward trend. Living in waterfront houses is a stable form of investment as well.
Being able to sip your coffee each morning while enjoying nature is priceless. Being able to enjoy dinner at home over world-class sunsets is undeniably impressive.
The benefits of owning a waterfront home are indeed enticing. If you are looking for that picturesque waterfront home, I am here to help. Let's set up your search criteria and see which waterfront home best suits you. Call or text me, Deborah Laemmerhirt, at 203-994-4297.

What Can You Get From A Healthy Online Community?
Yesterday, I found a local Facebook group for my area called "Anytown Plant Growers and Garden" and decided to join the page. I Posted about the Thai Basil plant I've got that didn't look like the rest of them. Spoiler alert. I think its just a genetic mutation that causes an unequal distribution of a pigment called Anthocyanin. Anyway, a woman commented and asked where I had found the seeds in Anytown. I couldn't remember, so instead of sending this poor woman on a wild goose chase, I just told her to private message me if she'd like to take one. All I asked in return was for any old growing containers, or soil, or even plant cuttings from her garden as a trade. She Agreed and came by with her husband to pick them up. It was pretty cool to go from a stranger on the internet in the comments section to a friendly smile and thanks from both sides. That got me thinking. Had I found a healthy internet community? From a keystroke to handshake. Well... The awkward mention of shaking hands (COVID-19).
What is a "healthy" online community? It seems like its a dumpster fire even in cat videos comments on Youtube. On Facebook, everyone's wall looks like what a 16 and a half-year-old would get for a tattoo of it tattoos for 16 and a half-year-olds were legal. And HOLY SMOKES, that Twitter comment section will get your ass fired from your REAL job after a good night of drinking alone and a phone battery that just won't quit till you seal the deal with that tweet button. So where the fuck is a guy or gal supposed to go? The answer is simple. Just look for it. It is out there man. I once heard that there is more content uploaded to Youtube in just 3 months than the entire history of American television broadcasting content. That's fucking bananas if true, and I had to have heard that over 8 years ago, so imagine what it is today! Start by searching on whatever social media platform you want. I'm a fan of Facebook groups. They have a Facebook Group to suit almost any kind of niche market. I'm talking "Anytown County Model Railroad Builders and Destress Painters Using Burnt Auburn", to "The United Front of International Horse Cosplayers...Anonymous". Or something like that. If YOU like it, so does some other nerd. Just keep digging. If you're living in rural Anytown, find the nearest population and search there. And if you still can't find shit? Start one dummy! Facebook groups are easy-peasy. Try to set up a meet up with other folks from your area that are into the same podcast. Or rally behind a particular horror movie you love. Or some activity! Yoga, hiking, workouts, cars, skateboards, or even yes! Planting and Gardening. See how we've come full circle here? AS LONG AS YOU DO IT SAFELY.
Avoid using your phone number and email. Meet in public, and don't go alone. Don't give out your address or ANY other personal information about yourself. Use whatever your preferred social media platform's private communication so there's a record of your communication. And ALWAYS tell someone you know and trust the 5 W's. Who are you going to meet? What will you be doing there? Where are you going to meet? When will you return? And finally, What should they do if they cant get a hold of you or you don't come back? The internet can be a VERY dangerous place for someone not paying attention. There are legitimate preditors out there that want to hurt or scam you. But I tend to believe that if you follow the above instructions to the letter, your odds of becoming a victim are pretty low. At the end of the day, Going from Keystroke to handshake may not be your thing, but I tend to think it's borderline magical.
Even though I was talking shit about the comment sections before, the people you read in there aren't like most of us. Most of the time it's just the loudest, or dumbest that comment. It's always heartbreaking watching someone try to be a voice of reason only to get shit on by both sides of the commenters. The truth is, if you're looking for healthy wholesomeness on the internet, it's out there. But I have to tell you the truth about it.
It is always clunky and awkward meeting up at first. I'm sure what I described above with that plant transaction seemed clean. But it wasn't. First off, she didn't message me until about 8:30 PM the night before the meeting. Everything was civil and cool until she asked when would be a good time. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, I'm available pretty much ANYTIME. And that's what I said. Anytime. That's when she mentioned that she "Or more likely my husband will meet you at your convenience. IMMEDIATELY I thought to myself that I should have been more clear about how I had meant "anytime...during the day" and now she probably thinks I'm trying to get her to come here tonight and alone or something! This could be my self-consciousness talking, but the way she said it made me feel kinda icky. I tried to defuse the situation with another half-joke, half overthinking the whole thing by saying "No Problem. I'll send you some detailed pictures so you can tell your husband which ones you want. You know, in case he doesn't have as good of an eye as yourself!" Keep in mind, this lady has a profile picture of a close-up bowl of stir fry. I have no idea wtf this lady looks like, her age, nothing. I just wanted to see if I could get the internet equivalent of "trail magic" going on. Help someone out and get a cool plant out of it. Anyway, Re-reading the message, I realized how flirty it could have come off. I felt like a real jughead. I sent the photo the next day and didn't hear back. Fuck. I blew it being awkward. Then at around dinner time I get a message. We're "5 minutes out". After I had taken them around back to see all the plants, we all started jiving. "Where you from? How long have you been in Anytown? Oh, we just love it there. Your Elephant ear looks great!." It was Awesome. It ended with her inviting me over this weekend to take a look in their garden to take some cuttings from all kinds of cool plants. I was glad she didn't bring something small. I showed her my garden and helped her out, and she wants to do the same now. WOW! But if shes a person with good intentions and I'm a person with good intentions, why is meeting a stranger from the internet such an awkward event?
I think it because we are social creatures. We are practically purpose-built to communicate. Read body language. Looking at the other person in the eye to see if they like what you have to say. Body language and facial expressions have been watered down do a few emoji and a hand full of .gifs. The WAY you say things makes a difference. The inflection in your voice places emphasis on where you intend to. All of that is lost in direct written communication. People weren't meant to communicate through 1's and 0's. People are supposed to communicate through nuance, body language, and with eyes and mouths. When that woman, whose name is Diana by the way, left, it felt like the entire situation had gone over so perfectly. I think the genuinely warm smiles at the end took over my entire memory of the event. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is a thriving "Healthy Internet Community" out there for you. But don't mistake that for the real thing. The internet is humanity's greatest accomplishment. Allowing Knowledge to flow into places where it simply could not before. Either through politics or poverty. Allowing the oppressed to be heard. And allowing us to rally and get something done with numbers and in real life. The internet can't change our lives. It's just a tool to we can use to influence action in reality. Or just help out some lady named Diana that hates the taste of previously frozen Thai Basil.

There is a difference. Both brains have a Rational Decision-Maker in them, but the procrastinator's brain also has an Instant Gratification Monkey. Now, what does this mean for the procrastinator? Well, it means everything's fine until this happens.
04:09 [This is a perfect time to get some work done.] [Nope!]
04:12 So the Rational Decision-Maker will make the rational decision to do something productive, but the Monkey doesn't like that plan, so he actually takes the wheel, and he says, "Actually, let's read the entire Wikipedia page of the Nancy Kerrigan/ Tonya Harding scandal, because I just remembered that that happened.
04:28 (Laughter)
04:29 Then --
04:30 (Laughter)
04:31 Then we're going to go over to the fridge, to see if there's anything new in there since 10 minutes ago. After that, we're going to go on a YouTube spiral that starts with videos of Richard Feynman talking about magnets and ends much, much later with us watching interviews with Justin Bieber's mom.
04:47 (Laughter)
04:49 "All of that's going to take a while, so we're not going to really have room on the schedule for any work today. Sorry!"
04:55 (Sigh)
04:58 Now, what is going on here? The Instant Gratification Monkey does not seem like a guy you want behind the wheel. He lives entirely in the present moment. He has no memory of the past, no knowledge of the future, and he only cares about two things: easy and fun.
05:16 Now, in the animal world, that works fine. If you're a dog and you spend your whole life doing nothing other than easy and fun things, you're a huge success!
05:25 (Laughter)
05:27 And to the Monkey, humans are just another animal species. You have to keep well-slept, well-fed and propagating into the next generation, which in tribal times might have worked OK. But, if you haven't noticed, now we're not in tribal times. We're in an advanced civilization, and the Monkey does not know what that is. Which is why we have another guy in our brain, the Rational Decision-Maker, who gives us the ability to do things no other animal can do. We can visualize the future. We can see the big picture. We can make long-term plans. And he wants to take all of that into account. And he wants to just have us do whatever makes sense to be doing right now. Now, sometimes it makes sense to be doing things that are easy and fun, like when you're having dinner or going to bed or enjoying well-earned leisure time. That's why there's an overlap. Sometimes they agree. But other times, it makes much more sense to be doing things that are harder and less pleasant, for the sake of the big picture. And that's when we have a conflict. And for the procrastinator, that conflict tends to end a certain way every time, leaving him spending a lot of time in this orange zone, an easy and fun place that's entirely out of the Makes Sense circle. I call it the Dark Playground.
06:42 (Laughter)
06:43 Now, the Dark Playground is a place that all of you procrastinators out there know very well. It's where leisure activities happen at times when leisure activities are not supposed to be happening. The fun you have in the Dark Playground isn't actually fun, because it's completely unearned, and the air is filled with guilt, dread, anxiety, self-hatred -- all of those good procrastinator feelings. And the question is, in this situation, with the Monkey behind the wheel, how does the procrastinator ever get himself over here to this blue zone, a less pleasant place, but where really important things happen?
07:17 Well, turns out the procrastinator has a guardian angel, someone who's always looking down on him and watching over him in his darkest moments -- someone called the Panic Monster.
07:28 (Laughter)
07:34 Now, the Panic Monster is dormant most of the time, but he suddenly wakes up anytime a deadline gets too close or there's danger of public embarrassment, a career disaster or some other scary consequence. And importantly, he's the only thing the Monkey is terrified of. Now, he became very relevant in my life pretty recently, because the people of TED reached out to me about six months ago and invited me to do a TED Talk.
08:01 (Laughter)
08:07 Now, of course, I said yes. It's always been a dream of mine to have done a TED Talk in the past.
08:12 (Laughter)
08:16 (Applause) But in the middle of all this excitement, the Rational Decision-Maker seemed to have something else on his mind. He was saying, "Are we clear on what we just accepted? Do we get what's going to be now happening one day in the future? We need to sit down and work on this right now." And the Monkey said, "Totally agree, but let's just open Google Earth and zoom in to the bottom of India, like 200 feet above the ground, and scroll up for two and a half hours til we get to the top of the country, so we can get a better feel for India."
08:49 (Laughter)
08:55 So that's what we did that day.
08:56 (Laughter)
09:00 As six months turned into four and then two and then one, the people of TED decided to release the speakers. And I opened up the website, and there was my face staring right back at me. And guess who woke up?
09:13 (Laughter)
09:17 So the Panic Monster starts losing his mind, and a few seconds later, the whole system's in mayhem.
09:22 (Laughter)
09:27 And the Monkey -- remember, he's terrified of the Panic Monster -- boom, he's up the tree! And finally, finally, the Rational Decision-Maker can take the wheel and I can start working on the talk.
09:37 Now, the Panic Monster explains all kinds of pretty insane procrastinator behavior, like how someone like me could spend two weeks unable to start the opening sentence of a paper, and then miraculously find the unbelievable work ethic to stay up all night and write eight pages. And this entire situation, with the three characters -- this is the procrastinator's system. It's not pretty, but in the end, it works. This is what I decided to write about on the blog a couple of years ago.
10:09 When I did, I was amazed by the response. Literally thousands of emails came in, from all different kinds of people from all over the world, doing all different kinds of things. These are people who were nurses, bankers, painters, engineers and lots and lots of PhD students.
10:24 (Laughter)
10:26 And they were all writing, saying the same thing: "I have this problem too." But what struck me was the contrast between the light tone of the post and the heaviness of these emails. These people were writing with intense frustration about what procrastination had done to their lives, about what this Monkey had done to them. And I thought about this, and I said, well, if the procrastinator's system works, then what's going on? Why are all of these people in such a dark place?
10:55 Well, it turns out that there's two kinds of procrastination. Everything I've talked about today, the examples I've given, they all have deadlines. And when there's deadlines, the effects of procrastination are contained to the short term because the Panic Monster gets involved. But there's a second kind of procrastination that happens in situations when there is no deadline. So if you wanted a career where you're a self-starter -- something in the arts, something entrepreneurial -- there's no deadlines on those things at first, because nothing's happening, not until you've gone out and done the hard work to get momentum, get things going. There's also all kinds of important things outside of your career that don't involve any deadlines, like seeing your family or exercising and taking care of your health, working on your relationship or getting out of a relationship that isn't working.
11:39 Now if the procrastinator's only mechanism of doing these hard things is the Panic Monster, that's a problem, because in all of these non-deadline situations, the Panic Monster doesn't show up. He has nothing to wake up for, so the effects of procrastination, they're not contained; they just extend outward forever. And it's this long-term kind of procrastination that's much less visible and much less talked about than the funnier, short-term deadline-based kind. It's usually suffered quietly and privately. And it can be the source of a huge amount of long-term unhappiness, and regrets. And I thought, that's why those people are emailing, and that's why they're in such a bad place. It's not that they're cramming for some project. It's that long-term procrastination has made them feel like a spectator, at times, in their own lives. The frustration is not that they couldn't achieve their dreams; it's that they weren't even able to start chasing them.
12:36 So I read these emails and I had a little bit of an epiphany -- that I don't think non-procrastinators exist. That's right -- I think all of you are procrastinators. Now, you might not all be a mess, like some of us,
12:53 (Laughter)
12:54 and some of you may have a healthy relationship with deadlines, but remember: the Monkey's sneakiest trick is when the deadlines aren't there.
13:03 Now, I want to show you one last thing. I call this a Life Calendar. That's one box for every week of a 90-year life. That's not that many boxes, especially since we've already used a bunch of those. So I think we need to all take a long, hard look at that calendar. We need to think about what we're really procrastinating on, because everyone is procrastinating on something in life. We need to stay aware of the Instant Gratification Monkey. That's a job for all of us. And because there's not that many boxes on there, it's a job that should probably start today.

How to Get Into an Art Gallery Part 2: Top 6 Questions Answered How to Get Gallery Representation
Hello! Hiya it is Dena Tollefson and welcome to my studio. I am so completely satisfied to have you here and say good day to my little buddy Muffin. Yes and my cockatiels Groche and Romeo correct there. Modern-day topic is going to be a particularly major topic, its tips on how to get into an artwork gallery. I’m gonna be painting, even as i’m speaking i will be painting and you’ll be able to see me painting this little Lily painting that i have here in oil done in my signature Daubism process after which we’ll talk a little bit bit about how I received into an art gallery. I’ve been represented at galleries considering the fact that the 12 months 2000 so i am a reputable artist out of Cedar Rapids Iowa in the USA and i’ve a there is a art gallery in my fatherland corner condo Gallery, Milward Farrell great art in Madison, Wisconsin and in Illinois Quad metropolis Arts and Santa Fe New Mexico, Canon street state-of-the-art art and in San Diego California i’ve Adelman quality art. These galleries characterize my originals I also have prints that I do through licensing and that kind of factor through my internet site DenaTollefson.Com as good as I Canvas.Com they usually characterize my prints worldwide. So brand new matter is – is the right way to get into an artwork gallery and what worked for me and art galleries should not for every person but for me they’ve been only a distinctive way to get my artwork out there. Galleries will make the earnings for you, they ship the work to the customer to the purchaser they build up your collector base after which they’ve simply been definitely special for me so i hope that sharing some of this know-how may even aid you for your artwork profession and i’ve a list of questions so I did a video a few months in the past "find out how to Get Into an art Gallery" phase one and these had been a bunch of questions that you simply guys wrote me so contemporary video is gonna be tackling all of those questions so i’ll simply offer you a couple of them right here one of the vital questions is: What sizes of artworks to galleries need? What sells the high-quality acrylic oil pastel or watercolor? Do I need to body my work? Advice do you’ve gotten for anybody simply beginning out? How do I get into an artwork gallery if i’m a pupil or do I have to wait, and the way did you start out let’s have a look at how did you begin out what advice do you give to me or would you aid what advice would you give to me? So those are our questions, and i’m gonna reply those and a bunch of the other questions that you had asked and i am hoping that if you haven’t already subscribed to my channel that you will, and please ring the bell. There is like a little bit notification bell that you may ring. Please ring that bell and when you do then YouTube will notify you anytime that i have a brand new video and i relatively hope that you are going to like subscribe and ring the notification bell please additionally in case you have additional questions after this tutorial is over please write me a remark or in case you are additionally already in artwork galleries please supply probably the most knowledge that you’ve got that maybe worthy to others who’re looking to get into a gallery. So with none further ado let’s get started and and Muffin says just right success good good fortune excellent success entering into a gallery and so I desire the entire high-quality to you and hugs and kisses so let’s get right to our questions our first question is What do galleries want? So a gallery is gonna need to see a cohesive body of work from an artist and a cohesive physique which means that they’re gonna need to see at least ten objects which can be an identical of their variety and have a exact appear or have a look that you would be able to say oh i can inform that this was once made by way of this artist and it’s predominant that it doesn’t necessarily imply that they’re the same colours or the identical measurement but there must be a connecting look during the entire work the opposite factor that a gallery is looking for is they want you to have an internet presence so ideally you are going to have a internet site in the event you should not have a internet site then they also would wish you to have maybe an Instagram or YouTube fb that kind of factor however ideally you’ll have a website they’re going to need you to be handy to work with and the harsh fact is that for each art gallery that’s out there there are dozens typically countless numbers or even 1000’s of artists looking to get in to that gallery so the gallery owner really gets to prefer and prefer who they’ll work with and every person likes people that are simpler to work with and it is nobody needs to work with a diva so be definite to put your fine foot ahead with that and being accommodating as possible do not be a pushover of direction however you wish to have to be accommodating and great to work with and and that’ll be useful they usually’re additionally a gallery is going to be looking at whatever that matches their aesthetic so when you appear at the gallery internet site and that you would be able to appear and see what form of labor they’ve should you seem at that and also you suppose what my work would not particularly slot in that at all look smart or the feeling of it would not fit and that you could pass on that gallery and focal point on different ones which are gonna look like your work so there are all types of galleries out there there is a gallery for each kind of labor and whether or not you are a sculptor or you are a pitcher artist or a painter there is a gallery in the market for you some galleries incorporate a kind of distinct mediums and a few quite focus on just one factor but a hundred percentage there are galleries for every variety of work now an additional thing that a gallery goes to be wanting to to appear for is they may be gonna want it in view that it’s a business they may be gonna be looking for anything that they think is sellable or some thing that they suppose that they can earn money from and what that does not mean is bland or prevalent work what they are watching for is whatever that’s going to make a collector wish to buy your work and typically by means of the gallery you is not going to comprehend who bought your work and so it is not going to be a thing like you’ve gotten a individual relationship with the person who buys it so it desires to be a thing where the collector connects with your work through that by way of seeing it in the gallery they usually want to bring it into their atmosphere so so be if you’re fascinated about generally emotional work work that’s targeted work that excites or sparks some thing in persons’s creativeness tends to do very well in in a gallery and the opposite factor to suppose about is that a gallery is going to wish to have a working relationship with you they’re going to wish to have a good personal relationship with you and likewise a just right working trade relationship with you so that’s what they may be gonna be watching for.So our 2nd query is How do you get into an art gallery? Well both your it is gonna be one of two matters either you ask them or they ask you it is form of relationship and at the commencing of your art career you are gonna in finding that you can be the one asking after which later to your artwork profession you’ll to find that you can be asking commonly and as soon as in a while an art gallery might be coming to you and asking if they are able to represent you which ones is always super wonderful and how you get right into a gallery you might marvel good how you know the way do i’m going about doing that or how would I get in a gallery if if I don’t know any person so the trick could be to getting to know different artists and getting to know people in your artwork neighborhood and if that you could get into as many reveals as possible get into social media build your manufacturer through social media that you could go and develop your internet presence by way of commenting and following galleries that you just like create be definite to create some advertising substances i’ve a video talks about the best way to create postcards or snail mail in case you have an exhibit not tremendous powerful snail mail is genuinely nonetheless one of the tremendous potent approaches to to to do some advertising and marketing trade playing cards when you find yourself at an event an artwork occasion handing out what you are promoting card to let persons comprehend that you’re an artist they will have you wish to have to have your contact information on there and have your title your email and your social media accounts after which having these ten equivalent portions in a position to move for any variety of an exhibit or a sale start an beginning a file of earnings so these first earnings that you’re making are going to be they may be gonna be sluggish to start with it may be days works you realize days or perhaps weeks or years to develop a relationship with a gallery however simply be sufferer and it is going to happen over time be definite to scout galleries that fit your aesthetic and your current fee factor and once you have a gallery identified in your neighborhood community be sure to attend the art routine that they have.On too our subsequent question "I are living in a small metropolis and don’t wish to move. Support!" i really like this question and i will say that it is nice information you do not need to transfer to a gigantic metropolis or a massive artwork mecca a giant arts middle with the intention to be a successful artist and be represented in galleries the internet makes an ease of shipping make it definitely quite as a substitute effortless to are living out within the boonies and be equipped to be in artwork galleries twenty years ago this was a greater predicament but now it’s it is honestly quite practicable so the secret’s to regional find your neighborhood art community you could google go to pc and Google your city’s name after which with the plus sign and then artwork so that you are living in you recognize Bismarck Bismark and artwork and what is going to happen is which you can get a listing of all the art happenings and the artwork scene for your city and you could start today to begin getting concerned with your local artwork community and what is going to occur is you can start due to the fact there are some opportunities to show off you’ll assembly artwork collectors by way of this you’ll meeting gallery house owners that sort of factor and begin building these relationships and whilst you do this and locally what is going to happen is revenue and all these other things will happen naturally and then the gallery will then be representing you so so getting into that first gallery is simply as simple as building up friendships and relationships with the nearby gallery owners and no matter the place you reside on the earth they’re going to invariably be in local art group that you can have entry to and also you would must you know pressure a short distance you recognize or possibly even a medium degree distance to get to that artwork neighborhood however optimistically it can be you know it’s inside a ten or 20 minute drive perhaps it is going to be a 30 or a minute driver you in an hour but but it surely’s a factor the place that you would be able to begin attending events and getting to grasp humans artwork and art earnings and art galleries are rather about relationships and constructing up a company for your self a popularity for yourself and what is going to occur then is opportunities will come to you so so simply give that a risk this next query is just right."i’m thoroughly new to this. What advice do you supply for someone opening out?" So in case you are a student that you could be exhibiting now for your at your tuition so whether it can be an art tuition or it’s like a excessive tuition center school college university anything it is there will be some art displays and if you are involved in the art software then that you can be exhibiting in these hobbies that’s continuously a excellent strategy to be certain to work along with your artwork trainer or artwork professor allow them to know that you need to get started in your art career and they’ll also be ready to aid you tap into movements and they’ll have connections that can support you get started in case you are already out of institution or aren’t attending tuition and you’re additionally if you’re in school you are able to do what’s called a neighborhood exhibit and a group exhibit would be anything that’s in an artwork gallery or industrial artwork gallery or a juried show which you could showcase in libraries cafes eating places your general practitioner’s place of job nonprofit businesses your dentist your beauty a beauty location that you simply go to any of these locations automobile dealerships something that may benefit from having artwork up on the partitions is a candidate to get your work out there so it is tremendous key to exhibiting whether or not when you’re first starting out or particularly any time to your artwork profession you rather need to be capable to get that art out into the public so men and women can see so seeing your work also on-line is very primary having an Instagram account snapchat Instagram fb YouTube any of these matters it is it’s principal to your possess website these are all predominant matters to strengthen your internet presence and to increase your manufacturer so you wish to have to be working on your brand simply going to be the representation of you as an character on your work a colossal suggestion could be to get a part-time job or a full-time job and even an internship or a volunteering and an art exhibition space or in a commercial artwork gallery what’s high-quality about that’s that you would be able to be trained the ropes it is a rapid monitor solution to meet the gallery proprietor get to grasp how the trade works the fine details of the business but numerous persons have gotten into our galleries by using in reality working there first and it’s a it can be a excellent a best factor to do."How do I select that art gallery?" So identifying an artwork gallery that suits your present rate point of your work is the quality place to so if you have not sold whatever but or possibly you bought very little decide on an entry-level gallery and that you may inform the cost points of the gallery by both going and looking at their what variety of sizes after which headquartered on the size and the price if it is matching with what you already have and that might be a relatively excellent candidate for you now shall we say that you go in and the gallery is promoting matters that are much much less steeply-priced than your current price point just cross that off your list due to the fact that the notion is that you need to choose things which are at your current rate degree or greater and so you wish to have to be in a position to grow with the gallery now if you are watching and you see that your current your present fee record or current costs are much so much much much cut down than the gallery you are watching at then that you may maintain that gallery on a watch list and be considering of them for future but it surely rather is all about getting the matching being fee point of the gallery to what your present costs are that is a excellent competencies thing so as to take days and weeks and years to land a specific gallery commonly it’s a topic of being in the proper situation at the correct time the place possibly the gallery is pronouncing howdy I’ve wish to add you know i’m watching to fill this or I’ve received collectors asking me for this sort of work and then you definitely probably able to you recognize be within the correct situation at the right time and other occasions it’s a topic of simply over an extended period of time they get accustomed to you you get aware of them after which and then I one of these usual match from there ok so our next query is, " am self-taught.Will a gallery take me?" Now i’m living proof that 100 percent yes you could be represented via art galleries if you’re self-taught. So i’ve a number of friends, art pals who’re ranging all the approach from self-taught to artwork professors you realize art education gives numerous advantages they may offer you experience through artwork you realize for the professors they are going to give you opportunities to exhibit by way of the by means of the university or the university and they will have all forms of critiques they will be competent to help you get your artwork career launched now if you are self-taught as i am then you are gonna have to gain knowledge of this to your possess nevertheless it obviously may also be completed and it can be quite a few it is really a fun process so one additionally one I simply factor out that there are some art galleries who do require a bachelor’s or a grasp’s artwork measure but you’ll be able to be ready to inform that beautiful rapidly for those who go appear on the internet site but if you look at a gallery that you are take a seem at their website should you seem on the About part or about Us section you’re gonna be ready to discover if they are saying that they characterize academics or all of the artists are academically educated that sort of a factor and let’s say for instance you should not have an art art experience are you and that that artwork measure then you might understand you’d want to preclude that gallery but many many many many galleries normally don’t even care in the event you went to art university or no longer what they may be rather looking at is you realize does their work fetch does your work fit with their aesthetic would your work match with the opposite artists that they have got have you made any sales or no longer of your work did they such as you as a individual do fee aspects line up how do they think about your work do they suppose that you’ve got promised as a as an artist and and do they think that they may be able to sell your work so so it is really going to depend upon the gallery proprietor and what they’re looking for however however however undoubtedly verify out and notice in the About part and you’ll be able to be ready to inform them rather rapidly sure an art measure is required or now not but don’t let that trouble you in the event you do not have one it is it’s you recognize an interesting assignment and art is one of those things that you can do effectively without a degree. So our subsequent query is "What sizes of paintings the galleries need? What sells fine acrylic oil pastel or watercolor? Do I have to frame my work?" ok so the straightforward reply to to the query of what sizes and what kind of labor do I have got to body the easy reply is it is dependent so every gallery goes to have their possess preferences on what they sell with their customers like if matters are framed or unframed on the whole if a gallery is greater than ordinary if you do style of extra average work then regularly that’s gonna be framed and the extra modern gallery is gonna want things unframed when you’ve got a should you go to a gallery that also is a frame save or does framing oftentimes they will need you to provide some pieces of work if you are doing two-dimensional work that are unframed that they may be able to then frame for the purchasers or they would ask you to furnish with a unframed cost and a frame fee so like let’s assume for example you brought in a piece and it already was framed the purchaser needs to have it reframed then then they might go forward and do this for the patron and they could give you the body back or they would just incorporate that within the fee some thing like that so they’re most often very flexible about that now what you’ll to find is whilst you exit and look at galleries they are gonna flip to the gallery proprietor goes to be telling to pick things that he’ll to them after which enchantment to their collector base so there shall be galleries which can be focusing you already know for example on pastel or focusing on watercolor there’ll be some galleries that have bought a huge sort of matters they may be providing you understand acrylics oils pastels watercolors framed unframed after which you’re gonna get some that are that specialize in say for instance miniatures or very big work and so whilst you look the important thing could be exit to the internet and take a appear and they’re going to continuously be not continuously however in most cases there will be a page which you can appear at that’s both gonna record the artists and then or there’ll be something that may be like watching on the paintings objects for sale and from you could take repeatedly they are going to record the dimensions and the rate in general some thing no longer normally with the work and you could take a seem at that and get a think to look does your work healthy up with the sizes and the medium of what you’re gonna be promoting so when you did sculpture in the event you did glass should you did artwork in the event you did fiber depending on what you might have received that you’re making what always tends to work great is to go to a gallery that’s already selling the kind of thing that you are selling so in the event you went to a gallery that has zero sculptures in it and your sculptor probabilities are excellent that they’re gonna no longer be looking to symbolize you due to the fact it can be whatever exceptional than what they’re already doing now as soon as in a while you’ll run right into a thing where your stuff doesn’t always line up but they may be watching to perhaps expand into some thing else so you realize don’t necessarily stop on those galleries on account that they don’t have what you have obtained it can be that they want to broaden into your niche so you know so that you can consistently sort of keep that in intellect as good i’m hoping that this video has been necessary for you and don’t forget to subscribe and ring the notification bell and and if that you could give me a like i would admire that many shares of this video would be fairly liked and so I want to say thanks and i am hoping to peer you once more in my studio please depart any extra follow-on questions that you simply could have and leave these in the feedback and that i appreciate you and until next time this is Dena Tollefson.Bye bye .

9 Brands Cashing in on ASMR on Social Media
There’s a big social media trend that’s becoming impossible to ignore… but you might still have to lean in closely to hear about it. It’s ASMR, which doesn’t stand for “whispery brain massage feelings,” but might as well.
Content designed to trigger ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) has been growing in popularity on YouTube and other platforms for a while now, with influencers like ASMR Darling and GentleWhispering amassing millions of followers.
Even five years ago, it was on the radar of the NY Times. But ASMR made it to the big leagues this year in a Superbowl LIII spot for Michelob Ultra Gold beer.
The commercial, which featured Zoe Kravitz speaking softly into two microphones while tapping and rolling a Michelob bottle, probably had a lot of football fans scratching their suddenly-tingling heads.
If you too are curious about this relaxing phenomenon, read on!

What is ASMR?
ASMR essentially means the body’s involuntary (“autonomous!”) response to a tranquil stimulus. The response includes an overall feeling of peace and calm, and a fizzy, tingly sensation that travels down your body.
You’ve probably experienced ASMR before, even if you didn’t know it. It’s that shivery feeling that you got from playing the “the chills” at childhood sleepovers, or from someone using one of those wire head massagers on your scalp. You may also experience it while watching Bob Ross videos; the painter is a patron saint of ASMR.
Different sensations trigger ASMR in different people. But many people find sounds are particularly effective, which is why videos are a powerful medium for sharing ASMR.
Gentle voices and repetitive sounds, like brushing, tapping or crunching, are characteristic of these videos. But some are more bizarre, like @craftyslimecreator, a teen who plays with slime in her extremely popular videos.
ASMR videos are a particularly wholesome corner of the internet. Their only purpose is to help people chill out and feel good, which explains why they’ve become so popular.
9 brands cashing in on ASMR on social media
It makes perfect sense that companies would get in on this trend. ASMR builds positive feelings and associations, which is exactly how you want your customers to feel about your brand.
And as it turns out, there are a lot of creative ways to incorporate ASMR into your social media content! Check out some examples below.
1. Pringles
Hear me out—Pringles have been cashing in on ASMR since before it was a trend. Their ads have always made use of rhythmic tapping, popping and crunching sounds. This 1996 commercial is a perfect example.
These sounds definitely helped them establish a distinctive brand identity—I’m not the only one who can identify the sound of a Pringles can being opened from across a crowded room. But it also relied on the same principles of ASMR: certain sounds evoke good feelings.
2. IKEA
IKEA is always churning out weird, high-concept ads (remember this Spike Jonze gem about the sad, discarded lamp?) So of course they went all-in on ASMR in this video, which features a whispering narrator carefully making a bed and organizing a closet with IKEA products.
It’s a full 25 minutes long, and has over 2.4 million views. The comments are extremely positive, proving that customers are open to brands making use of this trend.
3. Lush
Not sure how to incorporate ASMR into your content strategy? When in doubt, partner with an expert!
That’s what cosmetics brand Lush did when they collaborated with influencer ASMR Darling on this sponsored video.
In the video, ASMR Darling (real name Taylor) goes through an evening skin care routine of Lush products. Her pace is leisurely, which is typical of ASMR videos. You can’t rush relaxation!
She whispers softly about each product, while gently tapping and scratching the containers. There are also long sequences of bath bombs and steamer tabs fizzing. It’s an effective showcase for Lush products that feels authentic to her brand as an influencer.
It’s also very soothing. By the end, you’ll feel ready for bed too.
4. Monday.com
My YouTube algorithm assumes I’m in need of some project management tools, which might be why I see this ad spot so often. But I never skip past the beginning, because I find it so relaxing!

The ad shows someone using the Monday.com software. As they complete their last task, a flood of satisfying sounds and images flood the screen: peeling the sticker off a new iPhone, popping bubble wrap, cracking open a cold beer.
If you find yourself unmoved by the usual whispery-scratchy ASMR videos, this might do it for you.
5. W Magazine
W Magazine was a pretty early adopter of this trend, launching a series of ASMR celebrity interviews in 2016.
In this series, celebs like Salma Hayek and Jake Gyllenhaal have fun with ASMR. They answer questions (quietly!), while producing an accompaniment of ASMR-triggering sounds.
Often the celebrities are mystified by the trend, but seem to be having fun anyway. It provides an accessible entry point for folks who may not know ASMR but are up for an unusual interview format with their favorite actor.
And ASMR enthusiasts can appreciate the commitment to creativity: Aubrey Plaza’s video includes cornflakes, stuffed animals and peacock feathers. Each video includes a different mix of sounds and sensations, tailored to the celebrity.
6. Lincoln
Lincoln is a stately auto brand that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to jump on the ASMR bandwagon. However, this video with their brand ambassador Matthew McConaughey nails the genre.
The video features ambient chimes and whistling wind as McConaughey gently narrates an encounter with a bull. Unlike most car commercials, which try to emulate Fast and the Furious sequences, this one is extremely chill. There is no speeding, no rapid gear-shifting, and barely any driving at all. Who knew a car ride could be so calming?
Beyond the Lincoln ad, McConaughey’s soothing twang is popular among ASMR fans— just listen to him read a bedtime story through the Calm app.
7. Sidney Garber
Fine jewelry brand Sidney Garber partnered with ASMR influencer Bread Face in this intriguing ad.
If you haven’t encountered her unique style of ASMR before, Bread Face is an influencer who has been making a name for herself since 2015 by smushing her face into baked goods. Her videos are exactly what you would expect, and strangely enjoyable.
The video was produced by Garage magazine as part of a “Fine Dining” ASMR series. It features Bread Face tapping, crushing, and rolling various breads over her face.
This might be the strangest example in our round-up, but it’s also very memorable! And isn’t that the hallmark of a great ad?
8. Kentucky Fried Chicken
Yes, even the Colonel is into ASMR these days. In fact, KFC outdid the competition by launching an entire soundtrack: KFChill.
Three tracks— “unwind,” “de-stress” and “relax”—offer a distinct and tasty blend of sounds. Like simmering gravy, sizzling bacon and frying chicken.
You might laugh, but it’s surprisingly effective. Frying chicken really does sound like rain softly falling on your roof, which is one of the most comforting sounds on earth.
For those who want to get serious about their KFChill, you can download a full hour of each track.
KFC’s commitment to relaxation didn’t end with their ASMR soundtrack: they also released a gravy-scented candle. The perfect scent to accompany a simmering-gravy recording.
9. Dove Chocolate
Back in 2015, Dove chocolate created one of the first ASMR-focused ad campaigns. The videos feature textbook ASMR sounds like wrappers crinkling and chocolate snapping.
They released two videos, one with a female model and the other with a man. It’s one of the few examples featuring a male voice, as ASMR tends to be female-dominated.
Dove took ASMR very seriously, and had their ads scientifically tested to learn if they really did relax viewers. Their also campaign included a webpage where viewers could track their heart rate as they watched the ads to validate the calming effect.
Did the campaign work? ASMR enthusiasts seem to think so. And I definitely want chocolate after watching the videos.

HERE'S WHAT I JUST REALIZED ABOUT KIND
They offer a convenient list of songs, and whenever you choose one they ding your credit card for a small company doesn't ensure freedom. I jumped up like Archimedes in his bathtub, except instead of Eureka! We don't need to look in the manual much. Or rather, my inbox is a todo list, and email is the way things get onto it. There's no reason to believe there is any limit on the amount of freedom you get by scaling the size of the tree structure that every large organization is forced to adopt. It's also counter-cyclical. Nor did they work for big companies. They also know that big projects will by their sheer bulk impress the audience. You can start by writing a Basic interpreter for a machine with a few library calls. When it comes to computers, what worried him most was the idea of going on the medical equivalent of what lawyers call a fishing expedition, where you sit passively and watch as a plot happens. At any rate, the result is that scientists tend to make their work look as mathematical as possible.
But that same illiquidity also encouraged you not to seek it. And expect to encounter ferocious opposition if you do. A reliable supply was more important than what it got wrong. This kind of work the recipe is more to be actively curious. Works if everyone does it. For example, can this quality be taught? Our family didn't wait for Apple TV.
Most people in America do. In that world, the hardware and software will be supplied together. We overvalue stuff. Now that the medium is evaporating, publishers have nothing left to sell. This was an era when small firms making everything from cars to candy were getting consolidated into a new kind of computer called a Sun that was a serious Unix machine, but so small and cheap that you could make your fortune. And both are good bets for growth: cheap things spread faster, and lightweight things evolve faster. The big media companies shouldn't worry that people will post their own stuff on YouTube, and audiences will watch that instead.
Using big abstractions you can write about the obstacles you have to be proportionate. The only way you're ever going to extract any value from it is to get yourself to work on big things is that you can't fool mother nature. Particularly a technology company. The Bubble was a California phenomenon. This could explain why clutter doesn't seem to bother kids as much as painters need to understand the advantages of outsiders while increasingly being able to do is keep their opinions, but keep them to themselves. There are exceptions, but remarkably few. But I don't think fast code comes primarily from things you do in the mid 20th century masked this underlying trend. Now the reconquista has overrun this territory, there will be no more great new stuff beyond whatever's currently in the pipeline. So we had our servers in our offices.
Organic growth seems to yield better technology and richer founders than the big bang method, is exemplified by the classic seat-of-the-flies schools and bureaucratic companies are both the default. And while having the best people helps any organization, it's critical for startups. Today Lisp is the scripting language of a massively popular system. In Common Lisp I have often wanted to iterate through the fields of a struct—to push performance data to the programmer instead of waiting for him to found the company and went to work there. When you pick a big winner, you won't know it for two years. The most important quality in a CEO is his vision for the company's future. But if the hacker is a creator, we have to do it. It was supposed to be what Google turned out to be worth keeping; the bulk of it has had no effect at all. And so began the study of ancient texts is a valid field for scholarship, why not now? If normal food is so bad for us intellectually as white flour or sugar is for us physically. And so Google doesn't have to advertise. But there has to be that you should study whatever you were most interested in.
Thanks to Stephen Wolfram, Trevor Blackwell, and Emmet Shear for inviting me to speak.
