hey, bird and small animal owner side of tumblr: why does the java wood perch i have smell so funky? is it possible to be allergic to java wood? it makes my nose feel weird to breathe in and ziya started sneezing after i put the new perch in... could both of us potentially be sensitive to something about the wood itself? i've used java wood for some things her entire life (like she has a tabletop stand made of it), but she's also been a bit sneezy her entire life (ok'd by the vet, clean bill of health). is an allergy to java wood even a thing, though? google is failing me. i really didn't notice a strong smell til after i washed it in hot water, but now it's just not going away. it IS also a smell i've encountered in her toys/perches before and it's only now hitting me that like........ wait, hang on, maybe the smell is 1) related to java wood specifically, and 2) maybe we're both sensitive to it.

anyway! tl;dr: is a mild java wood allergy a Thing? should i not have washed it in hot water? am i insane?
