going back to that post about that poor soul being repeatedly mistaken for a recording on the phone at work...
i said in the tags that i get a lot of compliments for my telephone etiquette but minimal accusations of being an IVR, and at the time i put that down to the fact i answer the phone very bluntly with just "[department name], [site]" and maybe a "can i help?"
today was my first weekday back at work in 2024 (weekends don't count. we get about 5% of the phone calls) and i realised that actually probably the more important factor is that. although i have got a little better over the last two years i still have a habit of speaking at the speed of a chipmunk on amphetamines. and usually recordings are a little more laidback than that
#personol#work#considering phone work is such a big part of our role it's kinda wild how we get no telephony training. you're just allowed to wing it#like there are some points you have to stick to but there's no fixed script except for whatever you come up with for yourself#so. i answer calls like that bc 1) i work across A Lot of departments and it helps me remember which one i need to say today#2) when the desk is busy you want to deal with calls as quickly as possible bc F2F patients take priority#3) i'm of the firm belief that on a lot of phone calls 'being polite' means not wasting the other person's time#4) redundancy can be helpful for communication in some cases. but not all#anyway. i have opinions#and nobody's said i need to be more polite answering the phone soooooooooo i'm staying at it
