charlie burning and sam asking "is that you talking or the mark?" after dean says how he's gonna find the people who did it and tear them apart

but it's not the mark- or it's not JUST the mark. everything that is dean fuels the mark. the mark and dean are one and the same. the mark cannot have any influence without all the things inside dean- the same things that were inside cain- driving it forward and giving it power

so when sam asks that and dean doesn't reply? dean doesn't know how to say that it's HIM. HE GIVES THE MARK ITS POWER. that's why it's so fucking detrimental to the one who bears it. it preys on everything that the one who wields it is inside.

dean knows that. dean knows it so deeply. and it makes him even more critical towards himself and even more abortive towards the idea of being SAVED. because he knows that without the hatred within himself the mark would have nothing.
