earthsea film is so boringggg I feel like I've been here 1000 years the character design is all bad which usually with an unfaithful ghibli adaption at least we have character design. I have no problem with stuff being changed in an adaptation but so much of it feels meaningless. I actually think simply combining the plots of tehanu + the farthest shore & adapting them to fit together could've been an improvement on the originals because tehanu was kind of directionless but has great characters whereas the farthest shore has a very compelling central conflict but it's the weakest character wise. instead the weird desire to be Every Earthsea Book Playing At Once is suuuuch a mess but it's sad bc im kind of imagining what I described in my head instead and i wish we had that

#tenar kind of makes no sense bc all the other characters are too pale #so she's just like one degree paler than them.it just looks like shes someone who doesn't go outside #the slaver guys are nothing to me like so tonally dissonant and it just adds nothing to add a mob of underpowered bad guys #it literally reminds me of in my own writing when i don't trust my conflict so i add some generic bad guys. and then they always end up #getting cut bc they add nothing #and like yeah arren needs a better conflict but whatever is going on w him like. im 30 minutes in and it means nothing to me #it's literally like they kept the boring parts of tehanu and tfs #instead of. cutting those parts and keeping the interesting parts #like we should've started on roke. the beginning feels sooo aimless it's like they have no idea how to bring stuff in #so they just throw everything at us and then go okay so we can do the story now
