funny thing about my re-written gondolin au is that each cousin wants what the other has. idril wants to be her own knight in shining armor, she wants to fight, she wants her father to not see her as a helpless girl who must be guarded, or for her life to resort around being a wife and a mother. idril also has gender envy tm and sometimes wants to be perceived as something other than a woman. and maeglin wants to settle down, he wants to marry the tall blond prince. he wants to be seen as desirable. and even if he can fight and defend himself extremely well, he wants to be saved and not be seen as a threat to people. Since for a while they cannot talk to anyone about it and their desires, they talk to one another.
#did i say this at a point?#but trans masc idril is real - it's just before she knew#and also#in the specific vanyar- noldor customs her family follows#they are very cisheternormative#in a strange way maeg introduces some forms of OPEN queerness to gondolin#tho he is kept to himeslf#also idril very much does love tuor and earendil#but then again like she still deals with gender and sexuality#i have a whole story / au of her falling in love with a silvan elf woman before gondolin#but she ends up pushing away those feelings#and the resurface in gondolin#and lemme explain i don't think that like the noldor or vanyar of high elves are like staunch christians#i DO think however that some families and kingdoms chose to follow stricter rules#like i think that maybe finwe himself was rather heteronormative#but like miriel's customs and traditions were not#because i don't actually think she is noldor herself in a sense#but that said the line of feanor was a lot less orthodox than most noldor#and moriquendi elves and silvan elves and shit#have queerness really implemented in their specific cultures#sindar not so much#not until they start mixing with silvan and moriquendi#also turgon himself is not homophobic or whatever#it's just customs that were passed on thru his wife which was vanyar#and he tried to stay true to her culture when he made gondolin#he is actually very accepting in ways he can be
